2021 ACC Rankings: Pre-Spring

ACC Atlantic Division

1. Clemson Tigers

Why To Be Happy: At the moment, the defense gets all 11 starters back after leading the ACC in total and scoring D. This was a young group up front, and now all the stars return. Linebackers James Skalski and Baylon Spector announced they’re returning for another year, corner Derion Kendrick is back, and on and on and on. Oh yeah … the offense did this last year without a few key receivers who’ll be back.

What To Work On: Turnovers were a bit of a problem – especially fumbling – and the running game wasn’t its normal killer self. Travis Etienne is done, but the veteran O line has to be better at pounding away.

Bottom Line: It’s Clemson. It lost a transcendent NFL QB prospect in Trevor Lawrence, the most productive ACC running back ever in Etienne, and it’s going to be even better.

2. NC State Wolfpack

Why To Be Happy: The defense loses the main man Asim McNeill from the middle of the line, but everyone else of note appears to be back. Throw in a few key transfers – especially at safety – and the Pack should be nasty on that side of the ball.

What To Work On: Most of the offensive skill parts are back – helped by the return of leading receiver Emeka Emezie – but the production has to come. The O was fine, but it wasn’t explosive enough and there were too many turnovers.

Bottom Line: NC State was great at beating the teams it was supposed to, and the experience will be there to repeat the decent level of success of 2020, but big-time playmakers have to emerge.

3. Boston College Eagles

Why To Be Happy: It was a strong first season under head coach Jeff Hafley, and he gets the pieces back for the offense to be even more dangerous. The backfield of QB Phil Jurkovec and RB David Bailey will be great if …

What To Work On: The running game has to start working again. It wasn’t a function of the offensive style, but with all five offensive linemen expected to return to pave the way for Bailey, there’s no excuse for being 118th in the nation in rushing again.

Bottom Line: Just about everyone returns on offense, and the defense that needs a little reworking needs to start getting behind the line more. The Eagles will be stronger.

4. Florida State Seminoles

Why To Be Happy: There needs to be a whole lot of work and a whole lot more production, but almost all of the entire starting offensive 11 from the end of last season is expected to be back. The defensive side loses several key parts, but instant help appears to be on the way from the transfer portal.

What To Work On: Yeah, the offense. The defensive side has to generate some semblance of a pass rush, but the O has to be more efficient throwing the ball and has to figure out how to move the chains.

Bottom Line: 2020 couldn’t have been any worse for head coach Mike Norvell and the national title-level program. There’s experience, there’s a reset mindset, and … there’s a lot of work to do.

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Why To Be Happy: The offense should be even more explosive and more dangerous. The offensive line returns almost intact, the receiving corps is loaded, and Sam Hartman – bowl meltdown against Wisconsin aside – is a terrific triggerman to run it all. There’s more than enough talent back on D to be fine, but …

What To Work On: Losing star end Carlos Basham matters. The pass rush was a problem for the Demon Deacons with him, and now it’s going to take a whole lot of work to get even more out of the D that has to work to hold serve.

Bottom Line: It’ll be more of the same. Dangerous, fun, explosive offense that should be able to keep up with just about everyone, but questionable defense that should have enough issues to make every game a shootout.

6. Louisville Cardinals

Why To Be Happy: The offense is going to be interesting with Georgia Southern option wizard QB Shai Werts transferring in to add another option. Expect more consistency and production from a team that should be able to keep up with just about everyone.

What To Work On: The receiving corps loses Dez Fitzpatrick and Tutu Atwell to the next level, and the linebacking corps has to replace almost all the starting linebackers along with nose tackle Jared Goldwire.

Bottom Line: Coming off a 4-7 season, the Cardinals have to bounce back quickly despite a slew of key departures compared to the rest of the Atlantic Division. Improvement on the O line and limiting the turnovers are a must.

7. Syracuse Orange

Why To Be Happy: The Orange have almost everyone back on offense and on the defensive front seven, and the arrival of Garrett Shrader from Mississippi State should help the quarterback room. The experience is there on both sides of the ball, but …

What To Work On: The secondary loses its top playmakers, and losing receiver and return man Nykeim Johnson to Kent State hurts, and … offensive line, offensive line, offensive line. The Orange have GOT to figure out how to block after not doing enough of it over the last few years.

Bottom Line: We know it’s possible for Syracuse to win – we all saw it a few years ago – but after a lost year with horrible play on both lines, the program has to get the infrastructure right.

CFN Prediction: NC State 27, Kentucky 23

5. This TaxSlayer Gator Bowl has become a solidly under-appreciated bowl

It always seemed to get lost on New Year’s Day, and it’s always been a bit of a land of misfit teams, but the last two Gator Bowls have been decided by a grand total of three points.

Now, the games aren’t always pretty – more on that in a moment – but they’ve finished strong, including last year’s wild Tennessee finish over Indiana.

NC State got ripped up by Texas A&M in the 2018 version, but that’s three of the last four and six of the last nine decided by a touchdown or less. Now the ACC has to start winning these.

It’s been a disastrous bowl season in every way for the ACC with Miami’s D’Eriq King suffering a torn ACL, Clemson and Notre Dame getting trucked, and Wake Forest getting picked off again and again by Wisconsin.

This was one the conference could’ve had, but with the NC State loss, that makes it three loss in the last three appearances since Georgia Tech beat Kentucky in 2016.

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl

Sometimes bowl games are just bowl games, and sometimes they’re season-definers. It’s the latter for these two but for completely different reasons.

Kentucky had a disappointing losing campaign, but it’s in the bowl it likely would’ve been in had the schedule been normal – assume it would’ve had a few non-conference wins to build up the record. For a team that relies on a rock-steady style of play, it’s been a flaky year with a whole slew of blowouts for both good and bad. Winning this would make the season. On the flip side …

NC State had a strong record, it was the only team to beat Liberty, and it comes in this on a four-game winning streak. It’s not the most scintillating of teams, but it finds ways to get wins. It’s the sixth bowl game under head coach Dave Doeren after going 3-2 with the Wolfpack, while Kentucky’s Mark Stoops has won two in a row with this his fifth straight bowl appearance.

The SEC has owned this bowl over the last several seasons, going 5-1 – including a Texas A&M blowout over NC State in 2018, and with the lone loss a Kentucky gaffe to Georgia Tech in 2016 – but last year it took an epic finish for Tennessee to slip past Indiana. This matchup might not be that, but it should be close.

NC State (7-3) vs Georgia Tech (3-5) Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The run defense is playing well … at least lately.

It helps when your last three games are Florida State, Liberty, and Syracuse, but NC State is doing what it was supposed to and beating the mediocre teams on the slate. It hasn’t been easy, but this year, a win is a win is a win.

The defensive front hasn’t allowed more than 190 rushing yards in over a month, and it only had problems against North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Stop the Georgia Tech ground game, and you stop Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets were able to roll by Duke last week with five takeaways. NC State turns the ball over a bit, but not enough to be too big a problem, but …

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

NC State does turn the ball over.

There were issues over a two game stretch with seven combined against Duke and North Carolina, and it gave up at least once in every game so far. Georgia Tech needs the mistakes, and it needs to capitalize on all of them.

The NC State run defense might be doing a great job over the last few weeks, but it got ripped to shreds against the teams that can actually run. Georgia Tech might not be North Carolina or a fully-functioning Virginia Tech with its ground game, but it tore off 377 yards against Duke last week and should average close to five yards per carry.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech will make this interesting, but NC State will do a much, much better job on third downs on both sides of the ball, and it’ll finally be able to control the clock and the tempo on someone.

The Yellow Jackets aren’t going to get enough from the defensive line to pull this off, and they’re not going to get the five takeaways Duke gave up last week.

NC State (6-3) vs Syracuse (1-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why NC State Will Win

Syracuse has hit a wall very, very hard.

Injuries, opt-outs, no luck, it’s all been bad, and it’s been getting worse, bottoming out with a brutal 30-0 loss to Louisville last week with just 137 yards of total offense.

The Orange offense can’t move the ball a lick, it’s last in the ACC in scoring offense, total offense, run defense, rushing offense, passing offense, time of possession, third down conversions …

But other than that, things are going well.

NC State isn’t doing anything all that well, but the defense has been strong against the run – it stuffed the Liberty ground attack last week – overall the team is good on third downs on both sides of the ball, and all it should take is 21 points. Get there, and the Pack might have this.

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange are still fighting the good fight.

They’re not very good, they might be missing several key parts, and they’re not having any luck, but they’re forcing takeaways. They lead the nation with 20 so far including three last week against Louisville to at least keep the game from becoming even uglier.

Where are the positives? Freshman Sean Tucker is a nice-looking running back – he hit Louisville for 93 yards with a few big dashes – the young receiving corps is getting some work in, and the special teams are sound enough to be okay.

This is a hit-or-miss NC State team. It gets hit with too many penalties, it struggles to run the ball, and it doesn’t control the clock.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

This is a more dangerous game for NC State than it might seem.

Syracuse isn’t playing well, but ALWAYS be afraid of a home finale. Last year, the Orange shocked Wake Forest in a thrilling final game. Can it get that same energy and big play ability to pull this off?

The Orange lines are struggling too much and the offense isn’t good enough. This won’t be a total wipeout, but when the chances are there, Syracuse won’t be able to take advantage of them.

Liberty (7-0) vs NC State (4-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Liberty Will Win

The offense has been fantastically consistent no matter who it’s playing against.

The Flames have rushed for 180 yards or more against everyone, including 338 against Syracuse and 249 against Virginia Tech. It might have sputtered a bit in the easy win over North Alabama, but the O hit 400 yards or more against everyone else.

It starts with QB Malik Willis, who’s been a total offense machine, throwing for over 300 yards in two of the last three games with 12 touchdown passes and close to 300 yards on the ground in the last three.

The offensive balance has allowed the Flames to dominate in the time of possession battle – keeping the ball for well over 33 minutes per game – and NC State can’t seem to go on enough long marches.

Liberty will hold on to the ball for at least five minutes more than the Wolfpack.

Why NC State Will Win

The NC State defense has the ability to get Willis and company off the field.

This isn’t a rock of a D, and it gives up way too many points, but it’s outstanding on third downs with the run defense able to hold down everyone but Virginia Tech and North Carolina.

This game, though, for the Wolfpack will be about the passing game. For all of the great things Liberty has done so far, it hasn’t had to deal with a dangerous air attack. Even so, it was hit for over 200 yards through the air against Syracuse and Virginia Tech, and even Southern Miss was able to show offensive balance.

Bailey Hockman has found his groove, throwing for well over 500 yards in the last three games while becoming more and more accurate.

CFN Experts Picks, Predictions: Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

NC State certainly won’t be looking past Liberty.

The Flames are ranked, they’re 2-0 on the road against the ACC, and NC State has lost two of its last three games.

How much can the Wolfpack lines dominate? Willis and the Liberty running game will keep on pressing, but NC State has the passing game to do just enough to hang punch for punch.

This will go down to the wire – just like Liberty’s game against Virginia Tech – but NC State will survive with two late key stops.
