At least the Blue Devils are scoring.

The wheels haven’t totally come off, but they’re wobbling. Duke has lost three in a row and six of the last eight, but the team is shooting well from inside and out. There’s no defense, but that’s okay – NC State doesn’t shoot all that well and it doesn’t do enough from three to matter.

They’re shooting relatively well, too.

The Pack might not be doing enough defensively, but they’re not all that bad from the field and they were hitting from three in the win over Boston College and loss to Syracuse.

They’re going to hit from everywhere against this Duke defense.

The Blue Devils have been awful at stopping teams from getting good looks from the outside and the last three opponents have combined to hit 53% from the field.

What’s Going To Happen

The Pack will win the rebounding battle, and that will be enough.

Duke is the better team – barely – but the defense has gone bye-bye. NC State will get to the line just a few times more down the stretch to pull out an entertaining win.

Both teams are equally mediocre enough to make this fun.

Why Duke Will Win

For the love of Krzyzewski, stop turning the ball over and everything will be fine.

The pass rush has been terrific, the passing game is uneven but it puts up yards, and the scoring is there, but a nation-high 19 turnovers and a -11 turnover margin screw up everything else.

It’s a bit of a reach to suggest that the record would be night-and-day without the mistakes – besides the turnovers, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? – but Duke would probably be 3-2 right now if it wasn’t so quick to give it up.

Fortunately, NC State doesn’t take away the ball in bunches. If has five takeaways so far, and it generates pressure, but if Duke can just settle down and not force things, it has a shot to pull this off.

Why NC State Will Win

Turnovers.

Yeah, they’re a thing with Duke, and they don’t appear to be stopping. It managed to beat Syracuse last week despite the four give-ups because the Orange offensive line is really, really bad at blocking, but NC State doesn’t need any extra help.

Very, very quietly, the Wolfpack have been good enough. The secondary will give up yards and every game is a fight, but Devin Leary has settled in at quarterback, the rushing attack is good enough, and the team seems to have figured out how to win.

What’s Going To Happen

It took a really, really, really bad game from Syracuse for Duke to win last week. There’s enough talent in place to be better than it has been, but NC State is playing well despite all the flaws.

Best of all, now NC State is back at home after surviving a three-game road trip going 2-1. It’ll be another shootout fr the Wolfpack, and Duke will have its chances, but three turnovers will be the difference.

Why Duke Will Win

NC State has lost four of its last six games with problems on the boards, struggles scoring, and without anything happening from three for long stretches.

Duke has gotten hot at the right time with a seven-game winning streak to take control of the ACC race, and it’s doing it by shooting really, really well.

There have been a few brutally cold moments from three, but overall the O has been on, making half of its shots or more in 12 of the last 19 games. Make this a shootout, and it favors the road team. but …

Why NC State Will Win

The Wolfpack can shoot well, too.

To keep up, they have to connect on at least 45% from the field, and they can do that. They can’t make this a rough game on the inside, and they can’t start bombing away from three, but they can move the ball around well and they’re great at forcing mistakes.

Duke isn’t above turning it over a whole lot – giving it away 21 times in the win over Florida State last week – and State has to take advantage of every opportunity.

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s the problem – NC State hasn’t been all that great at home lately.

It’s coming off a three-game road run an hasn’t been home since the first of the month, but it lost its last two home games and hasn’t been nearly consistent enough. Duke won’t be perfect, but it’ll win the battle on the boards and it’ll keep playing well enough when it has to in spurts to keep the great run going.
