James Harden is shooting more free throws than anyone since Wilt

Houston Rockets superstar James Harden has redefined basketball based on the way he is able to draw contact from his defenders on the court.

Houston Rockets superstar James Harden has redefined basketball based on the way he can draw contact from his defenders on the court.

This has been an increasing trend for the 2018 NBA MVP, who has been able to get to the free-throw line more often than any other player in the league. It has defined his style as a basketball player and has recently forced officials to change the way that his games are called by referees.

Harden has taken 14.5 free throws per game for the Rockets so far this season. That is the most since Wilt Chamberlain (17.0) during his 1961-62 campaign.

On a recent podcast, The Hoop Collective’s Brian Windhorst noted that Harden is averaging four additional free-throws per game since last season (via ESPN):

“He is also on pace for one of the highest free throw seasons in the modern era. Now, free throws are a lot different than they used to be … The modern player with the most free throws ever was Dwight Howard in the 2010-11 season. Other than that, you are going back to Chamberlain. But he certainly could end up with the most free throws ever in the modern era.”

According to Cleaning the Glass, Harden has been fouled on 18.3 percent of his shooting attempts. He currently leads the league with 123 personal fouls drawn so far this season, which is good for 8.8 per game.

After 14 games, Harden has been awarded free throws on 18.6 percent of the offensive possessions he has finished this season. Among all players with at least 200 possessions finished, that is the second-highest rate in the NBA.

Perhaps most surprising is that the guard has also drawn a foul on a career-best 3.7 percent of non-shooting fouls per team play. He has drawn 1.47 non-shooting fouls per 36 minutes, per PBP Stats, significantly more than any of his previous campaigns.

As noted by Ben Cohen, it has become the most efficient way of scoring for Harden (via The Wall Street Journal):

“His statistics over the last six years help explain why free throws are such a priority for him. Harden’s shots around the basket are worth 1.22 points, and his 3-pointers return 1.09 points per shot. They’re both fabulously profitable shots. But they’re not as valuable as when he goes to the line for two shots (1.73 points) or three shots (2.59 points). Harden’s free throws are just about the best shots in basketball.”

The fact he has been able to get to the line even without taking field goal attempts has been a remarkably effective way for him to add points to his overall scoring distribution.

Overall, especially considering he is a much better free-throw shooter than Chamberlain, he may be able to shatter his own career-best points per game despite the addition of Russell Westbrook.

LeBron James tells a ref he’s playing defense this year … and he’s right

A great moment captured on video.

LeBron James wants the world to know he’s playing defense this year for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Well, actually, not totally. He wanted an official during Tuesday night’s Los Angeles Lakers win over the Oklahoma City Thunder — in which he got a record-setting triple-double — to know that he’s playing defense this year. It’s just that a fan sitting courtside captured what James said, and now it’s going viral.

It’s a great little inside NBA moment, but it’s also a reminder that James IS actually playing really good defense this year, along with his teammates.

Here’s the video with the exchange:

“I know you’ve been reading and saying I haven’t been playing defense the last couple of years, but it’s a new year!”

I don’t know what prompted that, but this seems like a good a time as any to confirm it — it is a new year, and James is playing some really good defense.

He had a defensive rating of 107.6 last year, and that’s improved to 96.4 early on. The Lakers as a whole are tied for the fewest points allowed per game, and it probably helps that Anthony Davis is also there.

I think what James is referring to is talk about how he had to take on more offensive responsibility with the Cavaliers in his final year in Cleveland and with the Lakers last season, and that cost him on the defensive end.

But now he has a balanced team — he has Davis’s help on both ends, some lane-clogging centers in JaVale McGee and a rejuvenated Dwight Howard, a bench scorer in Kyle Kuzma … so maybe he has the energy to put in more work on the defensive end.

So, yes. It’s a new year.

Prediction

Bulls 106, Pistons 103

Moneyline (ML)

The -115 line for the BULLS is not a hard one to take even without the presence of Porter inside.

This may be one of Chicago’s best chances to its losing streak. Detroit is 3-7 in its last 10 games and losers of four straight contests.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Bulls to win outright returns a profit of $8.70.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The value play for this game is taking the BULLS with the -1.5 points at -106 odds. A Chicago cover (win by two or more points) returns a greater profit of $9.43.

Chicago is only 3-4 against the spread at home but Detroit is worse on the road. Detroit is 1-5-1 away from home ATS.

Over/Under (O/U)

Lean slightly to the UNDER 220.5 (-115). Chicago plays a little more stout on defense and slows down a bit at home. It may be just enough to keep Detroit from scoring 110 points and makes the Under an easier proposition.

Prediction

Clippers 118, Celtics 111

Moneyline (ML)

As long as Leonard is able to play in this game, I fully expect the Clippers (-238) to win this game. SF Paul George is back and doing the things the team expected him to do when he was added via trade in the offseason. The Celtics (+195) are a great play if Kawhi sits, although the number is likely to change dramatically if he is officially ruled out.

New to sports betting? Every $1 wagered on a Clippers win profits $0.42 if they win outright. (Ex: Bet $10 to win $4.20, $20 to win $8.40)

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Roll with the CLIPPERS (-6.5, +100), again, as long as Kawhi is officially able to play.

The Celtics (+6.5, -120) are just 1-6 against the spread in the past seven meetings in this series. In addition, the C’s are just 1-5 ATS in the past six games against teams with a winning percentage over .600. L.A. has cashed in six of the past seven overall, and it’s 5-2 ATS in the past seven against clubs with a winning percentage over .600.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 218.5 (-105) once again hinges on Kawhi’s health. The over is 4-0-1 in the past five meetings in this series. The over is 3-0-1 in Boston’s past four against teams with a winning overall mark, and the over is 13-5 for L.A. in the past 18 home games against a team with a winning road record.

Spurs-Wizards odds: San Antonio a slight road favorite

Previewing Wednesday’s San Antonio Spurs at Washington Wizards sports betting odds and lines, with NBA matchup analysis, picks and tips.

  • SG Jordan McRae (illness) questionable

Spurs at Wizards: Odds, lines, picks, and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Wizards 107, Spurs 104

Moneyline (ML)

The +115 line for the WIZARDS is intriguing as they can keep games close and San Antonio appears to not be able to close games out in the fourth quarter.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Wizards to win outright returns a profit of only $11.50.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

An equally good play would be backing the WIZARDS on the spread of +1.5 points with +105 odds. A Washington cover here (lose by one point or win outright) returns a $10.50 profit.

Washington is only 2-2 against the spread at home and is nearly six points below projections, but San Antonio just cannot close out games. This should help out the cover for the home side.

Over/Under (O/U)

Our pick is the UNDER 237.5 (-115). Watch the number a little bit but this is a solid bet. Few would be surprised if this was a bit more of a defensive struggle than most think. If the number slips to -110, that is even better.

10-year-old fan wows the Lakers with incredible performance in a shooting contest

Someone give him a 10-day contract.

Who could forget the classic 2002 film, Like Mike? In that totally realistic movie, a young Calvin Cambridge — aided by magic sneakers — schooled his favorite basketball player in a halftime one-on-one promotion and ended up scoring an NBA contract with the fictional Los Angeles Knights.

Well, 10-year-old Lakers fan, Maxx, is ready to star in the sequel.

During a timeout of the Lakers’ Tuesday win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers invited the 10-year-old to try to score as many points as he could in a 30-second span. That included shots from the NBA three-point line, and Maxx’s game was so impressive that he caught the attention of the Lakers players.

The kid’s shot is absolute money.

But really, keep an eye on the Lakers’ bench. As the contest unfolded, you could see the players actually turn to watch Maxx shoot. When the contest was over, JaVale McGee came over to give Maxx a high-five.

Maxx can expect that 10-day contract any day now. He deserves it.

The HoopsHype Daily: LeBron James continues to make history, setting records we didn’t even know existed

Just when we thought we had seen it all, Lakers forward LeBron James set another record on Tuesday night, and it’s one of his craziest yet.

RIDICULOUS: After dropping 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against the Oklahoma City Thunder, LeBron James is now the first player in NBA history with a triple-double recorded against every single NBA team. The most hilarious part is that LeBron admitted after the game that he didn’t even know he had just earned that insane distinction, and instead thought that when head coach Frank Vogel singled him out in the locker room after the game, that he was about to be called out on his seven turnovers against Oklahoma City.

The other players trailing James in regards to this record are Russell Westbrook, who has triple-doubles against 29 teams (he also faces the Thunder this year with a shot to tie LeBron’s new record), and Jason Kidd, who got triple-doubles against 28 teams.

🏆 LeBron is currently No. 2 in our MVP rankings behind Giannis Antetokounmpo. Only Michael Jordan and Karl Malone have won the MVP award in their Age 35 season. Could LBJ be third?

PREDICTABLY RUSTY: Carmelo Anthony started, missed 10 of 14 shots and turned the ball over five times in his first game with the Blazers, a loss vs. New Orleans. Here we broke down how good of a fit he’s with Portland.

💰 If he stays with the team for the rest of the season, Melo will make $2.1 million. That’s not even one percent of his career earnings.

DINWIDDIE VS. THE NBA: The standoff between Spencer Dinwiddie and the NBA on whether he can convert his contract into digital coin continues, and doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon.

KING’S RANSOM: An executive stole $13 million from the Sacramento Kings. This is how he did it.

RILEY SPEAKS: Miami Heat team president Pat Riley talks about Miami’s early success this year and whether or not he’s eyeing a big move down the line. Considering the Heat currently sit at 9-3, rank in the Top-5 in net rating and have an elite young core on cheap deals surrounding All-Star Jimmy Butler, they might be wise to stand pat (no pun intended), at least for the time being.

FROM AFRICA TO THE NBA: Joel Embiid, Hakeem Olajuwon and Dikembe Mutombo join The Athletic to discuss legacies, basketball in Africa, Embiid’s future – and much more.

DEFENDING AIN’T EASY: Lonzo Ball opens up about the five players he’s faced who were the most difficult to guard.

NOT ON THE HOT SEAT? Knicks owner James Dolan continues to give head coach David Fizdale his vote of confidence.

FREE AGENCY NEWS: Sneaker king PJ Tucker is close to signing a deal with Nike.

LAMELO’S LIFE: Bleacher Report on 2020 draft prospect LaMelo Ball and his life in Australia.

Watch Rob Gronkowski and Venus Williams dance with the Laker girls

Rob Gronkowski put on a show at halftime of the Lakers game.

Patriots fans have been anxiously waiting for retired tight end Rob Gronkowski to announce his return to football with the team ahead of the playoffs, but Gronk announced this week that he has other plans. Instead of potentially suiting up for Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Gronkowski will be hosting a music festival on South Beach. He told ESPN on Tuesday that he’s still not ruling out an eventual return to football, but taking one or two years off “could possibly be the case.”

On Tuesday night, Gronk was in Los Angeles for the Thunder-Lakers game, and the joined tennis icon Venus Williams and James Corden for a halftime performance with the Laker girls.

Charles Barkley reportedly says ‘I don’t hit women but if I did I would hit you’ to female reporter

There is an unfortunate pattern of behavior for Barkley here, though he insists his comments were made as a joke.

On Tuesday night, Axios reporter Alexi McCammond tweeted out that former NBA star Charles Barkley told her that “I don’t hit women but if I did I would hit you.”

McCammond said Barkley’s comments came after she asked about clarification for which candidate he was supporting in the 2020 Democratic primary.

She says Barkley spoke glowingly about Deval Patrick, but then a member of Pete Buttigieg’s campaign approached the group. When Barkley then said he was a fan of Buttigieg, McCammond pointed out that he had just voiced his support for Patrick. He then made the comment to her.

McCammond also said the comments had been made off the record, an agreement she would normally respect were it not for the nature of those comments.

UPDATE: Barkley has apologized for the comment.

As many online pundits pointed out, Barkley has a troubling history of comments made about violence toward women. Most were couched as jokes, but it’s still a worrying thing that he hasn’t seemed to learn a lesson about this.

McCammond concluded by saying she didn’t like being a part of the story.

“It’s not about me or my feelings,” she tweeted. “But it’s about refusing to allow this culture to perpetuate because of silence on these issues. It’s easier and less awkward to be silent, but that helps NO ONE but the perpetrator.”

LeBron James had a funny reaction to learning about his NBA triple-double record

James made history on Tuesday.

A cool thing happened on Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Lakers took down the Oklahoma City Thunder 112-107 to win their NBA-leading 12th game of the season: LeBron James notched a triple-double with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

That made NBA history. James became the first player ever to get a triple-double against every team (as ESPN pointed out, Russell Westbrook just needs to get one against his former team, the Thunder, to match James).

But when he was informed of the fact that he had accomplished that feat by Frank Vogel, he thought the Lakers head coach was being funny (at about the 3:45 mark here):

“I had no idea. Coach Vogel came in here and said, ‘Congratulations.’ I was like, I thought he was joking about my seven turnovers because I’ve been taking care of the ball so much and he said, first player in NBA history to have a triple-double versus 30 teams, every team. So I was like, ‘Okay. That is pretty cool.'”

He also said he heard it from assistant coach Jason Kidd regarding those seven turnovers. So maybe it’s good for the Lakers that he’s thinking about keeping his turnovers down and not about his counting stats.
