LAST NIGHT IN THE ASSOCIATION: Wednesday night was headlined by Kawhi making his Toronto return, but a few other noteworthy moments occurred.

💍 Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers made their yearly trip to Toronto last night, with this season’s matchup having the added drama of it being Leonard’s first game against the Raptors since leaving the team last summer. Prior to tip-off, Kyle Lowry presented Kawhi with his championship ring as the Toronto crowd serenaded their former player with applause. For more on the Raptors’ championship rings, ESPN broke them down in this great piece. Anyway, Los Angeles won the game 112-92 behind 23 points and five rebounds from Leonard. Toronto has now dropped four of their last five games.

🔥 James Harden dropped 55 points (10 three-pointers) on the Cavs, and (for the Harden haters) he only needed five free-throws to reach that mark. Meanwhile, Hornets guard Devonte’ Graham exploded against the Nets, going off for 40 points on 21 field-goal attempts and 7-of-12 shooting from three. Graham, a Most Improved Player candidate, is now averaging 20 points and 7.6 assists per game on the year.

👑 The Lakers and Bucks, the league’s No. 1 and No. 2 teams in net rating, continue to roll, the latter without their best player, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Both squads now sit at 22-3 on the season. We’re only one week away from the two teams facing off for the first time this season, which should be a fantastic showdown.

BLAZERS STAYING QUIET? There’s been some scuttle lately connecting Kevin Love to the Blazers, but according to general manager Neil Olshey, Portland is going to remain disciplined even as the trade market league-wide starts to heat up. By that he means the team won’t ship away long-term assets or add a huge long-term contract just to make a shortsighted addition now.

🤑 That certainly seems to rule out the Blazers as a potential Love landing spot, considering his enormous four-year, $120.4 million deal.

ONE PORTLAND OPTION: Just because the Blazers don’t want to add long-term salary to their books doesn’t mean they’re going to be totally silent on the trade market. One solid option for Portland could be Thunder swingman Danilo Gallinari, who is on the last year of his contract. We broke down the potential fit here.

KAWHI TALKS FREE AGENCY: Kawhi Leonard says he heavily considered re-signing with Toronto last summer, and that the decision to eventually leave was a very difficult one to make.

FAVORS BEING MONITORED: Teams are keeping an eye on the Pelicans, who are struggling mighty this season, in hopes of getting a shot at trading for veteran big man Derrick Favors. Between injury and the untimely passing of his mother, Favors is having a quiet campaign, averaging just 8.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, but there’s no doubt he can help out playoff-caliber teams when he’s performing at peak capacity.

DAR OPENS UP: The Athletic got Warriors guard D’Angelo Russell to open up about his past, touching on a variety of topics, including his hectic time with the Lakers, how he bounced back with the Nets and what his future may hold.

🤔 For the trade-scuttle fiends, the common belief is that Russell is a likely candidate to get dealt by the trade deadline, but Russell mentions in the piece that he hopes to earn a long-term spot with Golden State. We’ll see if the Warriors feel the same way.

ON ANOTHER KNICKS FAIL: Woj and Ramona Shelburne go behind the scenes on the latest batch of Knicks failures, from the Kristaps Porzingis trade to the David Fizdale tenure to all the free-agent misses in the summer of 2019. If you’re a Knicks fan, shield your eyes.

KNICKS’ NEW MASTERPLAN? According to Stephen A. Smith, the Knicks want to hire Lakers assistant Jason Kidd as their head coach in order to lure Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign with them in free agency. Regardless of who their head coach is, recruiting Giannis, who is on one of the two best teams in the league this season, will be extremely difficult for New York, but it’s worth a shot.

ALL-STAR DOWN AGAIN: Gordon Hayward had to exit Wednesday night’s game against the Pacers with another injury, this time to his head. Luckily, he doesn’t think this one will force him to miss much, if any, time.

TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS: Dwight Howard is hopeful that Magic fans will be able to get over his ugly departure at some point. On his end, he says he’s already forgiven them for the way they treated him when he first departed them for Los Angeles.

DUNK OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE: Ja Morant absolutely obliterated Aron Baynes with this dunk yesterday. The dude jumped off two feet and switched the ball from his left hand to his right while already in the air. That’s scary stuff.

FIGHT! (SORT OF): The Lakers and Magic got into a little scuffle last night, one that led to the ejections of Jared Dudley and Wes Iwundu. It may seem like nothing, but these days, that’s what passes for a fight in the NBA. The Bad Boys Pistons are laughing somewhere.

12 NBA players who could on the trading block

A look at some names to watch ahead of NBA trade season.

The date Dec. 15 may not be significant to NBA fans initially, but it should be.

That’s the day in which players who signed new contracts this summer will be eligible to be traded, which is the unofficial start of NBA trade season, one of the most fun seasons in all of sports.

So as we get set for all the reports, rumors, speculation and trips to the Trade Machine, here is a list we put together of some of the big names who could be on the move after Dec. 15 now that teams have more of an ability to deal.

1. Kevin Love, Cleveland Cavaliers

He just got a big contract recently, so he’s set to be paid through 2022-23. And although the veteran power forward is past his prime, he’s still an asset to a team who has the ability to acquire that contract — he scores, he rebounds and stretches the floor. Assuming the rebuilding Cavs make him available, he’s arguably the biggest name who could be on the market.

2. Andre Iguodala, Memphis Grizzlies

He could be an X-factor for a contender, and there’s no way the Grizzlies will let him stay home the entire season without getting something back for the former Warriors great.

3. Danilo Gallinari, Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have A LOT of draft picks in the future. So what’s wrong with adding a few more for the expiring deal of an underrated star who’s doing his usual mix of scoring and hitting from deep? It’s clear someone is going to pay him in the offseason and it might not be the rebuilding Thunder who do it. Might as well get something back for him.

4. Tristan Thompson, Cleveland Cavaliers

Another expiring contract … but he’s come basically out of nowhere and looks like a completely different player. Cleveland might want to capitalize on a the breakout now.

5. D’Angelo Russell, Golden State Warriors

We’ve seen his name thrown around a bit, but I kind of doubt a deal happens after he signed a deal that pays him through 2023.

6. LaMarcus Aldridge, San Antonio Spurs

I’ve written that the Spurs need to blow it all up, so maybe someone wants the veteran forward, whose contract runs through next year.

7. DeMar DeRozan, San Antonio Spurs

See above.

8. Rudy Gay, San Antonio Spurs

See above, although if I was betting on which player was the most likely to be dealt, I’d go with Gay.

9. Davis Bertans, Washington Wizards

We’re getting to a verrrry interesting moment here with Bertans, who continues to hit threes at an incredible rate. His contract expires this summer and he’s going to get a raise. Do the Wizards then find a way to keep him despite the fact that they have absurd amounts of money tied up in John Wall and Bradley Beal? Or do they get assets back for the sharpshooter?

10. Marcus Morris, New York Knicks

He signed a one-year deal with the franchise and is now putting up career numbers. Some contending team is going to see lots of value there.

11. Bogdan Bogdanovic, Sacramento Kings

How do you trade a player who is super valuable to a young, growing roster? It’s simple: he’s a restricted free agent after this year and the Kings have a lot of money committed to Harrison Barnes, Buddy Hield, Marvin Bagley and Dewayne Dedmon.

12. Chandler Parsons, Atlanta Hawks

Can you believe that giant contract he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies is about to expire?

Trail Blazers at Nuggets: Key injuries

Trail Blazers: SG/SF Rodney Hood (Achilles) suffered a ruptured Achilles’ tendon during a game on Friday and he is done for the season, a tough blow for a team already shorthanded in the frontcourt with PF Zach Collins (shoulder) out until March and C Jusuf Nurkic (leg) still months away from a return.

Nuggets: SG/SF Jamal Murray (trunk contusion) is expected to be able to play, while PF Paul Millsap (foot) isn’t as much of a certainty.

Prediction

Nuggets 118, Trail Blazers 107

Moneyline (ML)

The Nuggets (-250) come with a steep price on the moneyline, and they’re not worth the risk with only a $4 return on a $10 bet to win outright.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The NUGGETS (-6.5, -105) are nearly even money if you’re willing to lay the points, and you should. The last time these teams met in Portland Oct. 23, it was Denver coming away with a 108-100 win.

Fast forward to Thursday … the Blazers are just 3-7 ATS in their past 10 road games and 1-4 ATS in the past five as underdogs. While the Nuggets are 1-4-1 ATS in their past six overall, they’re 4-1 ATS in the past five against losing sides. The boys from Rip City are just 4-10-1 ATS in the past 15 meetings with the Nuggs, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 213.5 (-115) has cashed in nine of the past 12 meetings, but go lightly until it is determined whether or not the Blue Arrow (a.k.a. Murray) is able to play.

Ja Morant’s unbelievable poster dunk against the Suns in 3 stunning photos

This clutch dunk in the final minute was ridiculous.

Memphis Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant threw down one of the dunks of the year on Wednesday night against the Suns, which doubled as one of the most athletic fourth-quarter daggers you’ll ever see.

With the Grizzlies leading 109-105 on the road in the final minute, Morant pulled 6-foot-10 Suns center Aron Baynes out to the 3-point line, then flashed past the big man with a crossover move. Baynes tried to recover and contest the shot, but Morant took flight and threw down a right-handed dunk over Baynes’ outstretched arm as he was falling away from the basket. The bucket put the Grizzlies up by 6 with 43.4 seconds left to play, and they held on to win the game.

Aron Baynes never had a chance.

76ers at Celtics: Key injuries

  • SG Marcus Smart (eye, illness) questionable

76ers at Celtics: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

76ers 106, Celtics 97

Moneyline (ML)

The 76ERS (+105) are the play as they enter on a three-game winning streak and a day off Wednesday. The Celtics had a four-game win streak snapped with a 122-117 road loss against the Indiana Pacers Wednesday, and now Hayward’s availability is questionable once again.

The Celtics and Sixers are both four games back of the Eastern Conference-leading Milwaukee Bucks. Boston remains perfect at 10-0 on home court while Philly is just 5-7 on the road. The 76ers won the first meeting of the season between the two 107-93 in the 2019 opener at home. Take the value with the road dogs as the healthier, and rested team.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the 76ers to win outright returns a profit of $10.50.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Stick with the moneyline rather than taking a lesser payout while backing the 76ers (+1.5, -110) to stay within a single point in the event of a loss or to win outright. It illustrates the value of the straight-up victory for the visitors. If you like the Celtics to win, the -110 odds to cover -1.5 and win by at least 2 points would be the better value than the -125 odds on the moneyline.

Boston is 14-7-2 against the spread overall and 7-2-1 ATS at home. Philly is 11-12-2 ATS overall and 4-7-1 on the road, but it will upset a tired and wounded opponent and win outright.

Over/Under (O/U)

Lean to the UNDER 210.5 (-105) with the Celtics on the second half of the back-to-back. The two sides played to a total of 200 points in their first meeting of the season. Hayward led the way for the Celtics with 25 points, while Smart had a team-high 8 assists. The two teams combine to average 220.5 points per game while allowing a combined total of 207.1.

There’s a very good reason why Kawhi Leonard’s Raptors ring has a middle finger emoji on it

Still funny, though.

No, this is not the Toronto Raptors throwing a bunch of shade at Kawhi Leonard for bolting the franchise he helped for one year and joining the Los Angeles Clippers.

But yes, there is a middle finger printed on Leonard’s 2018-19 championship ring that he received from the Raps on Wednesday night, in which die-hards in the North showed him nothing but class in his return.

So here’s the reason why that’s on there: it’s a reminder to Leonard to wear the ring on his middle finger. Simple! But Leonard, as you may know, is a self-proclaimed “fun guy.” So he described the emoji as an “Eff you” symbol:

It would be way funnier if it was the other reason, but alas.

Raptors fans chanted MVP! at Kawhi Leonard in classy moment before his first game back

All class in Toronto upon Kawhi Leonard’s return.

Kawhi Leonard is making his first trip back to Toronto tonight since he led the Raptors to a NBA title last June.

And the fans were really happy to see him, which is pretty cool.

Leonard, of course, left town in the offseason to join the Los Angeles Clippers. But nobody can take his one year with the Raptors away from him as he led the city on a heck of a run last spring/summer that ended with a lot of parties after they beat the Warriors in the NBA Finals.

Leonard got his championship ring before Wednesday’s tip and fans showed their love for him with MVP champs and signs saying thanks:

How awesome is that?

This was just as awesome:

And here’s the video tribute they played for him:

All class in Toronto.

Josh Richardson returns from injury for Sixers

Josh Richardson returns from injury for Sixers.

PHILADELPHIA — Former University of Tennessee basketball player Josh Richardson was having a solid campaign in his first season with the Philadelphia 76ers before he was bitten by the injury bug recently.

Richardson, who missed six games with hamstring stiffness, returned to the Philadelphia lineup Tuesday night when the 76ers outlasted the Denver Nuggets, 97-92, Tuesday at Wells Fargo Center.

The former Vol played just 19 minutes against the Nuggets. He started, but scored just three points while pulling down one rebound for the 76ers (18-7). Richardson formerly played with the Miami Heat, but was traded to Philadelphia on Draft Night in a deal that sent Jimmy Butler to South Beach.

Richardson is one of two former Volunteers hoopsters starting in the City of Brotherly Love. Forward Tobias Harris is in the midst of a solid season.

He scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists against Denver on Tuesday. He played 36 minutes.

Pelicans at Bucks: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Bucks 136, Pelicans 108

Moneyline (ML)

The Bucks (-1250) are coming off a 110-101 win over the Orlando Magic on Monday. The Eastern Conference leaders are 11-1 at home for the season and outscore the opposition by a league-high 13.3 points per game in all locales. The Pelicans are on a nine-game losing streak and are 2-9 on the road for the season. They’re outscored by an average of 6.7 PPG.

The Bucks win this easily, but make it a more exciting and more profitable wager by playing the spread. A $10 bet for the simple outright victory returns a profit of just $0.80.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The BUCKS (-12.5, -115) is the largest spread on Wednesday’s slate. Milwaukee is 12-12 ATS overall and 6-6 on home court. New Orleans is 9-15 ATS overall and 3-8 on the road. Seven of Milwaukee’s last 15 wins were by margins of at least 13 points and three of New Orleans’ last nine losses were by at least 13 points.

These teams aren’t in the same class, and the Bucks have the home-court advantage to boot.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams have hit the Over just 11 times through 24 games, but the Bucks top the projections by an average of 1.7 points per game and the Pelicans top the number by 0.9 PPG. The two teams combine to score 233.3 PPG and allow 226.7. The line will be tight, but take the OVER 235.5 (-110). The Pelicans allowed at least 130 points three times during their losing streak.
