The HoopsHype Daily: The NBA is proposing major schedule changes for 2021-22, including an in-season tournament

The NBA is proposing schedule changes, including a shorter regular season, playoff play-in games and an all new in-season tournament.

SCHEDULE CHANGE SUGGESTIONS: The NBA finally made official the schedule changes they’re proposing, and they’re pretty interesting. For starters, the regular-season schedule would get cut from 82 games to 78, which would allow for an in-season tournament. As a reward for winning the in-season tournament, aside from a trophy, players on the championship team would earn $1 million while coaches would get $1.5 million. Aside from that, the NBA is also proposing a play-in tournament for the seventh and eighth playoff seeds in each conference, as well as for the four last teams remaining in the playoffs to reseed in the playoffs based on their regular-season records.

Of all these suggested changes, the play-in tournament is the most appealing, because we saw what a play-in game looked like just a few years ago, when the Nuggets and Timberwolves faced off on the last day of the season for a shot at the playoffs. The game went to overtime and had playoff intensity throughout. Considering the end of the regular season is usually pretty boring, a play-in tournament could be a good way to spice things up.

TRADE SCUTTLE: The Hawks need to find Trae Young some help, particularly in the frontcourt. John Collins’ return from suspension will help, but Atlanta will need more if they want to make a playoff push. Well, according to reports, the Hawks are trying to do just that; Atlanta is being associated with Thunder big man Steven Adams as someone the team is targeting for a potential trade. Adams is averaging 11.1 points and 9.6 rebounds this season.

LEBRON GOES DOWN: For the first time this season, LeBron James missed a game due to injury when the Lakers faced off with the Nuggets last night. Though some thought this could be a case of subtle load management by L.A. prior to the team’s Christmas-Day game against the Clippers, Brian Windhorst said James’ pulled rib muscle is a “significant issue”, and that the four-time league MVP is also dealing with a nagging groin injury.

😨 Let’s not forget: A groin injury is what forced James to miss over a month of action last season, so the Lakers would be wise to act cautiously with LeBron’s return from this current injury.

IT SUSPENDED: The craziest story of the weekend came when Isaiah Thomas thought it prudent to walk into the stands during a Wizards game at Philadelphia to tell a fan to cool it with the vitriol. Here’s footage of the interaction between Thomas and the fan, and though the former All-Star should be commended for keeping his calm, he just can’t walk into the stands, pretty much under any circumstances. The funniest part of this whole saga was that the fan explained the reason for his anger towards Thomas, and it was because the point guard made a free throw that had he missed it, would have given Sixers fans free Wendy’s Frostys. No, seriously.

💰 The fan was banned from the Wells Fargo Center for a year while Thomas was suspended for two games, which will cost him $32,000.

WIZARDS MAKE SIGNING: Washington is reportedly close to signing Gary Payton II over the weekend, who has been lighting it up for the Lakers’ G League team. Payton averaged 21.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists over 16 games in the NBA’s minor league.

FORMER FIRST-ROUNDER INJURED: The Sixers might actually be cursed when it comes to their top draft picks getting injured as rookies. The latest piece of evidence we have is Matisse Thybulle suffering a knee sprain, which will keep him out for at least two weeks of action.

AIR DONCIC? After what was a heated recruiting battle, Luka Doncic is reportedly ready to choose his exclusive sneaker brand, and it’ll be Jordan Brand. Doncic will sign a five-year deal with the sneaker giant, and though he won’t get a signature shoe right away, he could if and when he wins MVP or Finals MVP. Doncic joins Zion Williamson as Jordan Brand’s two latest signings… that’s a decent duo to build around.

SPECTACULAR HARDEN: James Harden is starting to make the extraordinary look ordinary. His latest 40-plus point game against Phoenix on Saturday was the 89th of his career, which put him in sole possession of fourth place among all players, trailing just Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

UNBOTHERED: Kawhi Leonard played a game in San Antonio on Saturday, and though he was showered with boos throughout the contest, the reigning Finals MVP didn’t give that reaction a second though, stating that the boos are fans really showing him love.

BROTHERLY LOVE: ESPN goes in-depth on the Lopez twins, interviewing the duo on a variety of topics, including their love of Star Wars, as well as their love of trolling each other. Fun read.

SOME FROM THE PORTERS TOO: Michael Porter Jr. talks about living with his siblings, including NBA prospect Jontay Porter, and how they help keep him grounded through the ups-and-downs of the NBA season.

DRAFT WATCH: Once LaMelo Ball went down with a foot injury, many thought his time in the NBL (Australian basketball league) was over, since he has probably done enough to warrant getting drafted highly in 2020. However, LaVar Ball says if his son is healthy and feeling 100 percent, he will return to action later this season.

🤔 We’ll see if the Balls actually go through with that, but as of now, our aggregate mock draft has LaMelo as the projected No. 2 pick of the 2020 draft.

DIFFICULT TO FORECAST: Speaking of Ball, between him going down, James Wiseman leaving Memphis and injuries to Cole Anthony and RJ Hampton, the 2020 NBA Draft is becoming awfully difficult to predict. As of now, four out of the projected Top 10 picks are inactive, while a fifth, Deni Avdija, isn’t getting much playing time at his top club in Europe.

HOLIDAY MOVES: There was a slew of news over the weekend regarding real estate moves made by current or former NBA players/executives, including Kawhi Leonard purchasing a new penthouse, Russell Westbrook putting a home up for sale and Chandler Parsons purchasing a pricey new place.

The Lakers are sputtering, and they need to answer a big question regarding LeBron and AD

The Lakers look unstoppable when LeBron James and AD are on the floor, but when either sits, they look very beatable. The Nuggets proved that.

The Los Angeles Lakers lost their third straight on Sunday night, falling to the Nuggets 128 – 104.

With LeBron James out, Anthony Davis went off for 32 points, 11 points, and four blocks, but it wasn’t enough as Denver cruised to an easy victory. The Nuggets got scoring from just about everyone, with six players contributing with double-digit points.

This is the big question for the Lakers right now, and one that needs to be answered: How can this team win games when one of their stars is out?

What’s interesting about this Lakers team is that L.A. also doesn’t have much (or any) success when LeBron James is out (understandable), but they also can’t seem to perform when Davis is out, too.

I wrote about it last week after the Pacers beat an AD-less Lakers team — without Davis on the floor to space things on offense and defend the rim on defense, the Lakers have to go to Dwight Howard, who can’t space anything.

With Howard clogging the paint, LeBron has no room to work, and the entire Lakers offense comes sputtering to a halt.

When James is out, the Lakers have different problems. Now, their brain is gone. The team goes from having a genius Swiss Army Knife running the offense to Rajon Rondo and AD running a pick-and-roll without enough good shooters around them.

Rondo can’t shoot, so defenders can go under on the pick, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Avery Bradley aren’t good enough shooters to keep defenders honest, so teams can double AD.

Davis is still so good he’s going to get his points, even doubled, but the rest of the team? Yikes. You could watch as Frank Vogel threw just about everything at the Nuggets, trying to find something that would work.

Alex Caruso played 22 minutes. Kyle Kuzma got 22. Quinn Cook had 17 minutes. Dwight Howard split time with JaVale McGee. Troy Daniels got 10 minutes. Nothing seemed to work.

What’s more concerning for the Lakers is how bad they are defensively. The defensive talent is there, they just don’t have the intensity right now. AD was furious after the game. “With or without [LeBron], we suck defensively,” he said after the loss.

Playing Nikola Jokic is tough, but it’s not like the Nuggets came in with a surprising game plan. They got Jokic the ball in the high post, and players cut off him. The Lakers didn’t stay with the cutters. The Nuggets had a lot of easy buckets.

Lakers fans can chalk this all up and just say “well we’re good when our two stars are on the floor, who cares?” But championship teams have answers when lineups get wonky. Even in the playoffs, things happen. Guys get knocks. LeBron and AD are two strong guys, but they’re human.

If they really want to win a title, the Lakers need to figure out how to play when one of their stars is missing. When James and AD are on the floor, the Lakers are just about impossible to defend, and when locked in defensively, they can get stops when they need them.

But Frank Vogel isn’t going to have James and AD on the floor for 82 games, and he needs to figure out a way for his team to be competitive when one (or both) is missing if the Lakers want to find the success they expect this year.

Hawks’ Chandler Parsons: ‘I’m dying to play but it’s out of my control’

NBA veteran Chandler Parsons opened up to HoopsHype about the strange circumstances surrounding the most recent few years of his pro career.

NBA veteran Chandler Parsons opened up to HoopsHype about the strange circumstances surrounding the most recent few years of his pro career.

Parsons, 31, is currently on the active roster for the Atlanta Hawks and is in the final season of a maximum contract. That means next summer, the 6-foot-10 forward will become a free agent for the first time since the summer of 2016. As such, the market will be able to correct itself with a new deal for Parsons – who is eager to prove he still has plenty of gas left in the tank.

We spoke to the former SEC Player of the Year about the Hawks as well as his new home in Los Angeles, advice on training and more.

What are some of your general takeaways the Atlanta Hawks? What are some of the things that you’ve noticed about the locker room of such a young team and being a part of it as a veteran?

Chandler Parsons: It’s cool just being a veteran on a young team like this that has a lot of talent and a lot of room to grow. Obviously, we’re not winning as many games as we’d like to. But I think this season has pretty much been dedicated to developing these young guys, getting them more experience and just for them to continue to grow in a positive way and not get accustomed and get used to losing, but to learn from it and get the experience, get the exposure and continue to grow and get better. For me, I’ve just been a veteran, good locker room guy trying to lead these guys off the court and just waiting for my opportunity to play.

When you hear those terms like “good locker room guy” and the like, what are some of the things that you’ve picked up along the way to become?

CP: Yeah. Just being there for them, answering questions, leading by example in practice and shootaround and film sessions and just helping out any way I can. Some of these guys like Cameron Reddish are 20 years old and for some of these guys, it’s all so new for them and it’s a long season. They’re pretty much at the length of their college season now, they basically have two more. It’s long. There’s still a lot of basketball to play and these guys are going to continue to get better. Just doing really anything they need, being another coach out there, things like that.

Would coaching be something that you’d consider after your playing career is over?

CP: No chance! Never. I’d rather own the team. I’d rather own the team than coach the team. I don’t know if I have the patience enough to coach. I guess I wouldn’t count it out.

Speaking about owners, how’s your relationship with Mark Cuban these days?

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

CP: Me and Cuban and cool, man. I spent some time with him this summer. I’m happy for him and the way Dallas is playing. Luka Doncic has really taken his game to the next level. He’s one of the best players in our league. Kristaps Porzingis is balling, Tim Hardaway Jr. is balling. They’ve got a lot of pieces that know their roles and they play hard so I’m happy for him.

How often do you pitch Cuban with an idea for Shark Tank? If I had his number, I’d probably get him one or two a week.

CP: It’s crazy. I don’t, but it’s crazy how many people around me are like, “Hey, you’re still in touch with him. Can you ask him about this?” My mom hit me up the other day about some weight loss stuff that she heard about and how it’s crazy and I hit him up and he was like, “Yeah, That’s not mine. It’s not real. Don’t do it.” Something like that I’ll still talk to him about, but I’m not really inventing things and pitching it to him.

It sounds like you’ve got a good real estate mind, though. How is the new property? I saw some photos and I know it’s from the creator of CSI.

CP: Yeah, the house is sick. I was spending a lot of time in Malibu last summer and just like the vibe out there and I found a good house. It pretty much will be my main residence going forward. It’s an hour away from the city.

Will this be your first time really living in L.A. or have you lived there before?

CP: I’ve like that last six years, so I just kept migrating West. I started in West Hollywood and then went to Beverly Hills and went to Bel Air and now just keep going closer to the water.

Are you a surfer? Are you a big water guy?

CP: I like being on the beach, I like being on the water. I like paddleboarding and being out on a boat and stuff like that. I think it’s really my vibe during the summer, beach workouts and things like that. Malibu, it’s a whole nother world.

Who do you train with when you are in Los Angeles?

CP: So it depends. I’ll mix it up between Noah LaRoche basketball-wise and Drew Hanlen. I was with Rob McClanaghan. I mix it up. I don’t think guys should train with just one trainer. I think if you can learn something from Chris Brickley when you’re out here in New York or if you can learn from Rob McClanaghan and take away from everything. Ronnie Taylor when you’re in Miami. I think there are so many good trainers out there that you should try and expand on your game from anybody that you can. That’s what I do and then just have a whole training regimen with different rehab guys, different strength guys, cardio guys, just things like that and mix it up.

Is that one of the things you tell younger players? What are some of the other tidbits you give them?

CP: I think it’s good for them and just to experience everything. I think if any of the rookies are in L.A. this summer, hit me up and stay with me for a week and do a day in the life of a vet or something like that and see step by step what to do. I guess everyone has their own place where they live in the summer, but everyone pretty much lands around at some point be in L.A. I think it’s important just to try everybody and see what you like, see who you don’t like and go from there.

Who are some of the guys that took you under when you came into the league?

(Photo by Brian Sevald/NBAE via Getty Images)

CP: I was always cool with Blake Griffin. He was in the league before me. Even this past summer I hired his entire strength team and we trained together accordingly. Joakim Noah was one of the guys I trained with every day in the summer. That’s pretty much our group and then we’ll go to different workouts, different pickups like UCLA or pickups at West L.A. College and have our team already.

Do you know how Noah is doing these days? I know that he had some serious injury that kept him sidelined for a bit.

CP: He’s good. You can tell he’s been working out. He’s the type of guy that works so hard that he’ll be, during the deadline and during the buyout season, somebody will pick him up. He’ll be a key part for, hopefully, a contender.

You’ve played with some incredible guards in the past like James Harden, Kyle Lowry and Mike Conley. What are some of your thoughts when you look at Trae Young?

CP: Trae is a lot better than I thought. I thought that he was just this guard that jacked up a lot of shots and had some range and could hit buckets, but he’s unbelievable. He’s one of the top point guards in the league. He can handle it, he can shoot from anywhere, he can get in the paint and can get to his floater when he wants. When he wants to pass the ball, he can average 15 assists per night. He’s really, really good and just continues to work hard and continues to be one of the best players in the league.

What about some of the rookies that Atlanta drafted in 2019? They have an interesting class of players.

CP: They’re really good. You see De’Andre Hunter over there and he’s just so solid. He doesn’t play like a rookie. He’s like Harrison Barnes, quiet. He’s methodical. He gets to his spots. He’s under control. He’s never going to take a bad shot and Cameron Reddish is the same. He’s a little looser and a little more swaggy when you see him play, but just the potential. The sky’s the limit for both of them and they’re so advanced. It’s almost like the game is so easy to them in a way, it hurts them because they’ve just got to continue to work, continue to work on their craft, keeping being good guys. Like when Reddish struggled the first month, he was still defending and was probably our best defender, which is good. A lot of young guys, when their shot’s not falling, they’ll shut down. He stuck with it and he found ways to impact a game without scoring really or not being effective or efficient on the offensive end. But he stuck with it and now he’s having some big games. You can tell he’s getting more comfortable every single game. And then there is Bruno Fernando too. He’s a big body. He can step out and shoot the ball. He’s a mismatch down low on the post. The future here is crazy. Before the season, obviously, it’s not going the way we thought. But those three rookies and Trae and Kevin Huerter and John Collins? I don’t know a younger core that’s that good.

But on that same note, unfortunately: How hard is it for you to not get that playing time even with knowing how important it is for Atlanta to develop their young core?

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

CP: It sucks. It really sucks. Obviously, I want to play. I want to help. I’m healthy and I’m in a contract year so I want to show the team that I’m healthy and I can play and I can definitely help this team win. But at the same time, I understand the objective here and I understand the operation and knowing that development, so I’m just staying ready. Like I said, I’m being like being a leader and being a good locker room guy whenever he wants to play me, I’ll be ready.

What do you perceive for the future of your playing career? What are some things that you think you can provide a team moving forward?

CP: Yeah. I know that in today’s NBA I can definitely be a stretch forward. And I feel like, with these lineups, I can also even play the five. Also: twos and threes are the same positions so I can play two through five. And I can bring the ball up, I can shoot the ball and I’m 6-foot-10. There’s not a lot of people that can move like me who are this height. I’m tall, man. It’s always been about health with me and I’m the most healthy I’ve been in a long time. I’ve just got to sustain that and keep managing it. My knees feel great, my body feels great. Hopefully, it’s just a blessing in disguise that I’m not playing now and I’ll be ready. It sucks, but at the same time preserving my body and like I said… I’m dying to play but it’s out of my control.

Do you think that there were misconceptions about you and the way everything went down with your contract situation and how everything went down with your finish in Memphis?

CP: I think anybody with a brain in my situation would have taken the contract. It’s funny. People that are hating on it, if they were in my shoes or if their son was in my shoes, they would have told them to do the same thing. Right? Should I have predicted that I was going to be hurt and took less or took half the money? That’s psychotic. Now the contract is what it was and obviously, I didn’t live up to it. I think if I was healthy, I fully would have done that and I think it was on the path of being a really good player in this league and people are judged off of their salary and I understand that and that’s how it goes. It was out of my control as far as injuries go and not being able to play as much as I wanted to in Memphis sucked. But it’s silly when people hate on it. Anybody in their right mind would’ve done the same thing.

Now that your contract (and so many others around the league that had big deals that summer) is coming to an end, are you almost excited for a new chapter?

Photo by Cato Cataldo/NBAE via Getty Images

CP: I am excited. I went from my rookie deal the first three years to a max contract over the last six years. So I’ve had a lot of expectations, a lot of pressure. And I haven’t been the healthiest player in the league. I think just to get on a team next year, on a financial friendly deal, it changes the whole look of you to the fans as well as you to the media and just you to everything. You see a lot of guys that do that. Dwight Howard on a max deal was awful. Dwight on an interim deal is phenomenal. Someone like Andre Iguodala, when he goes to say, the Lakers for minimum, he’s going to be this huge value and people are going to love him. That’s just how it goes. I have no complaints. I’ve played basketball in the NBA. I set up my future here. I still think there is still time to just show I can still play. I just turned 31. It’s still young and technically I should be in my prime. I’m not worried about it. I just want to play. People probably don’t think I’m healthy just because I’m sitting over here and not playing. But I’m practicing every day. I’m doing every shootaround. I’m doing every lift. I’m doing everything that the team is doing besides playing in the game.

I don’t think that a lot of people know that you are actually healthy and active.

CP: I think people to see that and they see that I’m not playing. That’s what I’m saying, they think it’s my choice and I don’t want to. Basketball is my whole life. It’s been my whole life. Obviously, I was really good about it to get the contracts. I’m really good at it to get the contracts I did. No one just gave me those contracts. But yes, I always say: “Take something away that you love the most in the world and not be able to do it for the last basically three years.” Nobody will enjoy that. I think I haven’t really done media. This is the first time I’ve talked to media since I’ve been in Atlanta. I did a media day in Atlanta, but that’s really the only time I’ve ever talked about anything the last couple of years.

How to Watch Nuggets vs. Lakers, NBA Live Stream, Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time

Watch Nuggets vs. Lakers Live Online.

After a horrid road trip that saw them lose two games and the league’s best record, the Los Angeles Lakers return home to take on the Denver Nuggets. In their final game before a headline showdown with the Clippers on Christmas Day, the Lake Show needs to get back to its winning ways.

Nuggets vs. Lakers

When: Sunday, December 22

Time: 9:30 p.m. ET

TV: NBA TV

Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Anthony Davis’ health is a concern for the Lakers. The All-Star forward missed the team’s loss against the Indiana Pacers earlier in the week before returning against the Milwaukee Bucks. A sprained ankle has the big man hobbled during a crucial stretch of games. Despite being slowed a bit, Davis still put up 36 points and 10 rebounds over 43 minutes in a 111-104 loss to the Bucks.

With such an important game on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if Davis is given the green light to play against the Nuggets. The same can be said for LeBron James. However, with this being a home game against another quality opponent, the likelihood of them both playing seems pretty high.

Denver (18-8) is not a team to be taken lightly. The Nuggets are currently the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. While Nikola Jokic has continued to perform at a very high standard, fourth-year point guard Jamal Murray has developed into a nice complementary piece. The 22-year-old is coming off of a 33-point performance in a win over the Orlando Magic and is averaging 17.5 points a game.

Updated 2019-20 NBA Championship odds, picks and best bets

Looking at the 2019-20 NBA Championship odds, with NBA futures betting picks, tips and best bets.

The first quarter of the 2019-20 NBA season is in the books and we’re looking at the updated NBA Championship futures odds at BetMGM. We make our revised picks for who’ll be lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy in early June.

2019-20 NBA Championship Favorites

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. ET.

Los Angeles Lakers (+325)

The Lakers, who were +550 favorites in the summer following the acquisition of PF Anthony Davis, have dropped even lower as they’ve raced out to a 24-5 start. They’re scoring 112.6 points per game while allowing just 104.1 and showing little sign of weakness. But, as we’ve seen with the Golden State Warriors this season and last, injuries can happen. I don’t like going all-in on one team this early and a $100 bet returns a profit of just $325. There’s too much season left.

Boston Celtics (+1800)

The Celtics have been battling injuries early to PGs Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart and SF Gordon Hayward, and they’re still 19-7 and second in the Eastern Conference. They’re the top defensive team in the East with just 103.6 PPG allowed and they lost just one of their first 12 home games. They offer better than four times the odds of the conference-leading Milwaukee Bucks (+350) and are a much better play on the early futures odds.

2019-20 NBA Championship Longshots

Dallas Mavericks (+2800)

The Mavericks were one of my picks in the summer at +4200 odds. A 19-9 start to the season in which they’re scoring 117.6 PPG with 108.8 PPG allowed, has dropped those odds considerably. SF Luka Doncic is an MVP frontrunner, but the team has stayed above water during his absence due to an ankle injury. Get these odds soon, as they’ll likely drop even lower upon his return.

Portland Trail Blazers (+6000)

Fifteen teams have higher odds than the Blazers to win the championship, but they’re as deep as I’m looking. Western Conference finalists a year ago, they’ve started 14-16, but still hold the eighth seed in the conference in late December. PF Carmelo Anthony has resurrected his career as the third piece of the offense behind Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. C Zach Collins and C Jusuf Nurkic will return from injury in the second half of the season and bolster the frontcourt for a potential playoff run.

While the NBA is controlled by the perennial favorites, the Trail Blazers are a nice lottery ticket with their odds only going down for the remainder of the season.

Prediction

Celtics 119, Hornets 101

Moneyline (ML)

Even as the more shorthanded team, the Celtics (-1112), second in the Eastern Conference, will win handily over the ninth-seeded Hornets (+650). The Celtics are 11-1 on home court for the season and have won back-to-back games coming into Sunday. They dropped the Detroit Pistons 114-93 on home court last time out. The Hornets are 6-10 on the road and have lost two straight games, the most recent a 114-107 defeat at home at the hands of the Utah Jazz on Saturday.

There’s no play to be made here with a $10 bet on the Celtics to win outright returning a profit of just $0.90. It’s far too much chalk to swallow, and we’re looking to make dollars not cents. Make this a more competitive and more worthwhile wager by laying the points on the spread.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The CELTICS (-13.5, -106) win this one comfortably, by at least 14 points. They have the rest and home advantages on their side, and they’re the all-around better team, even if Hayward needs to sit. Boston is 16-8 against the spread overall and 8-3 at home. Charlotte is 17-15 ATS overall and 9-7 on the road.

The Hornets have lost by at least 14 points eight times this season, including a 22-point loss to the Indiana Pacers a week ago today. The Celtics have won by 14 or more points six times, including Friday’s game against the Pistons.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Celtics to win by at least 14 returns a profit of $9.43.

Over/Under (O/U)

The juice is on the OVER 209.5 (-115) but that is just fine. It’s an easy pick on a slightly low projection. The second-half situation for Charlotte will help open scoring for Boston, while the Celtics’ injuries — particular to Smart and Hayward — make for easier paths to the hoop for the Hornets.

Esten’s NBA betting record: 110-77

Prediction

Nuggets 107, Lakers 103

Moneyline (ML)

The Lakers (-167) remain home favorites after losing back-to-back games for the first time all season. The NUGGETS (+140) are a great value play with plus-money amid a five-game winning streak. Neither team is at full health, but it’s the Lakers being hit harder with each of their top-three scorers battling some form of injury.

Bettors will want to see Millsap cleared before going too heavily on the Nuggets, but they’re worth at least a small wager at +140. A $10 bet for Denver to upset LA and win outright would return a profit of $14.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The moneyline is a better play for those backing the Nuggets (+3.5, -115) in what’s projected as a one-possession game. The Lakers (-3.5, -106) are 16-13 ATS overall and 8-4 ATS at home, while the Nuggets are 11-13-3 ATS overall and 4-5-2 ATS on the road. The more profitable play is on the true upset, and that’s where my money will be going Sunday. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 209.5 (+105). Even with impactful injuries on both sides, this total is low. The two teams combine to score 219.5 points per game and allow 205.8 PPG. It’s tough to see either team being held below 100 points.

Isaiah Thomas details confrontation with 76ers fan in stands

The fan yelled swear words and put up both middle fingers.

Guard Isaiah Thomas brought context to his ejection in the fourth quarter of the Washington Wizards’ 125-108 loss to 76ers on Saturday in Philadelphia.

Thomas told reporters the Sixers fan stuck up both of his middle fingers up and swore repeatedly at the Washington guard. Thomas then went into to the stands to confront the fan when the Wizards called a timeout with three minutes left in the game. Thomas was ejected soon after.

“I’m never going to be disrespected in any way. It doesn’t matter where I am, that’s not going to happen,” he said after the game on Saturday. “So when I missed the first three throw and made the second, I’m running back and a fan has both of his middle fingers up and said, ‘(Expletive) you, (expletive),’ three times.

“Then the timeout goes and I go in the stands and confront him. I say, ‘Don’t be disrespectful. I’m a man before anything and be a fan.’

“His response was, ‘I’m sorry I just wanted a Frosty.’ Because if you miss two free throws, I guess the fans get a Frosty.

“So that’s what happened and I walked back and told my security who it was, so he can get kicked out the game because in no shape or form should that be allowed at all.”

He added: “That crossed the line, I’ve got kids, I’ve got a family, that is not okay at all, so I just went to go and tell him that.”

Here’s a look at the interaction.

Thomas clearly had no regrets from the incident. The NBA may review the situation to see if Thomas deserves further punishment.

Prediction

Clippers 124, Thunder 118

Moneyline (ML)

The CLIPPERS (-133) are a solid play if you don’t want to lay the bucket on the spread. The Thunder (+110) are 10-5 straight up this season at home, so it won’t be an easy trip.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Clippers to win outright returns a profit of $7.70.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The CLIPPERS (-2.5, +105) offer play-money on the spread where they’ll need to win by just 3 points. LA is 5-1 ATS in its past six on the road, and 6-2 ATS in the past eight games overall. A $10 bet on LA to win by at least 3 returns a profit of $10.50.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 219.5 (-125) is the play, going 4-0 in the past four for OKC, including 4-0 in the past four at home, too. The Over is 4-1 in the past five overall for the Clippers, while going 4-1 in the past five as a favorite, too. Look for plenty of points.

Prediction

76ers 126, Wizards 109

The 76ers (-1000) are heavy favorites, and there is no way you can possibly risk more 10 times your money for such a small return. The Wizards are +625.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the 76ers to win outright returns a profit of just $1

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The 76ERS (-12.5, -115) are 0-3-2 ATS in the past five as a favorite, 0-2-2 ATS in the past four at home and 0-3-1 ATS in the past four overall. So why bet them? Well, the Wizards (+12.5, -100) are just 1-6 ATS in the past seven trips to the City of Brotherly Love.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 230.5 (-106) is where it’s at. The Over is 5-1 in the past six meetings in Philly, while also going 9-4-1 in Washington’s past 14 on the road and 4-0 in their past four as an underdog. The Over is 4-1-1 in Philly’s past six at home, and 4-1 in their past five overall.
