San Diego State Aztecs College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Even under the new coaching staff the offense was able to run well – averaging close to 200 yards per game – but the passing attack just couldn’t click. There wasn’t much happening down the field and there were too many stalls against the better teams on the back half of the schedule. That’s why …

Finding a quarterback is Job One in fall camp. Georgia Tech transfer Lucas Johnson was okay in his limited work, and Jordon Brookshire was a bit better when he got his chances, but Carson Baker led the team with 617 passing yards and three scores – and now he’s in the transfer portal. In comes Jalen Mayden from Mississippi State to make it a three-way race for the gig.

Also coming over from Mississippi State is Tyrell Shavers, a 6-6 super-recruit receiver for Alabama who left to play for Mike Leach and the Bulldogs. He joins a deep group with the top seven wide receivers returning, including 21-catch tight end Daniel Bellinger coming off an all-star season.

The offensive line might need the most shuffling around and work. There’s size and enough overall experience to be okay around Zachary Thomas at one tackle spot, but no matter how this puzzle gets put together, the group has to be far stronger at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

The running game will get production from the quarterback, but the companion of Greg Bell and Chance Bell are back and should combine to average at least five yards per carry. The ground attack improved by over a full yard per carry – that will continue.

Wyoming Cowboys College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The Wyoming offense does what the Wyoming offense does – sort of. It ran well and did a decent job of controlling the clock, but it struggled on third downs, struggled in pass protection, and the passing game wasn’t good enough. With ten starters expected to be back, the production should be stronger.

The quarterback situation should be a fight through fall camp. Levi Williams failed to hit 50% of his passes with just one touchdown pass and three picks – and he was the only one to come up with a scoring throw.

He’ll have to push past Sean Chambers, the starter two years ago who’s having a rough time staying healthy – he was only able to play one game last year after suffering a knee injury the year before. Everyone is okay, and now it’s about who can rise up and take the gig.

The top three targets are back, and they can make big plays deep – the Cowboys led the Mountain West in yards per completion. However Ayden Eberhardt led the team with just 16 catches and 252 yards, and Isaiah Neyor averaged 31 yards per catch on his eight grabs.

The passing game might be questionable, but …

The ground game should be a killer. The quarterbacks might struggle to throw, but they can run. The 1-2 running back punch of Xazavian Valladay and Trey Smith was good for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns with over 5.5 yards per carry.

These two will put up all-star caliber numbers behind a solid line with all five starters expected back – guard Logan Haris and center Keegan Cryder are the best of the bunch.

Nevada Wolf Pack College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense was fun, it was explosive, and it finished second in the Mountain West averaging 441 yards and 31 points per game. It was very, very good – now it has to be unstoppable with all 11 starters expected back and a whole lot of talent ready to mature into something special, and it starts with …

Carson Strong. The Wolf Pack have a rising pro prospect who started out his career trying to bail out the defense with lots of yards and big plays, but last season he was sharp throwing 27 touchdown passes and just four picks. The reigning Mountain West Player of the Year has the top targets back to keep it all going.

Romeo Doubs was unstoppable early last year and finished with over 1,000 yards, averaging over 17 yards per catch. He’s back along with field-stretching tight end Cole Turner – who finished second on the team in receiving and caught nine touchdown passes – and all of the young wideouts are back, too.

If that wasn’t enough, Elijah Cooks is back after leading the 2019 team with 76 catches for 926 yards and eight scores – but he missed last year. And …

Again, everyone is expected to be back, and that includes the offensive line that didn’t have to do much for the ground game and was good enough for the passing attack. It’s a decent-sized front around 6-5, 310-pound all-star tackle Aaron Frost.

Toa Taua only seems like he’s been around since the Chris Ault era. The team’s top rusher over the last three seasons combines with 235-pound Devonte Lee to give the Wolf Pack a strong 1-2 punch that averaged over five yards per pop. Taua can catch, too.

UNLV Rebels College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The Rebels were going to need a total redo no matter what, but the hope was for head coach Marcus Arroyo to be able to do a whole lot more with the offense in his first season. The O averaged just 331 yards and 17 points per game, there weren’t many downfield pass plays, and the ground game struggled. It all starts with an improvement on …

The offensive line. The Rebels had good size, but now that bulk is being transformed a bit with a load of massive 300+ pounders who should be stronger and more of a force. Now the group has to do something to keep the quarterback from getting popped. At least the experience is there with three starters back to bang away for a good-looking backfield.

Getting Jayvaun Wilson from Oregon is big, but having Charles Williams back for a super-senior season is the biggest positive. He’s a tough, quick back along with the speedy Courtney Reese.

QB Max Gilliam is done, but 6-4, 220-pound former TCU transfer Justin Rogers is a big, mobile passer who wasn’t used enough. He’ll have to battle with 6-5, 215-pound sophomore Doug Brumfield to try speeding up the offense a bit. The receivers are there to make it happen.

Kyle Williams is a good No. 1 target who stepped in and led the way with 35 catches for 426 yards and two scores, and 6-2, 190-pound Zyell Griffin adds more size. The tight end situation is deep enough to utilize more, starting with super-senior Giovanni Fauolo coming off an 11-catch, 108-yard season.

Air Force Falcons College Football Preview 2021: Offense

It’s Air Force, so you know how this works. The team needs to run well to win, it has to control the clock, and it has to be able to overwhelm teams with its style.

The offense led the nation with 306 rushing yards per game, and the defense was relatively decent, but it was still just a 3-3 season because the O didn’t do quite enough low-scoring losses to San Jose State and Army. And now there’s a whole lot of work to do.

Air Force is always rebuilding – that’s sort of how the service academy teams operate – but this year it’s really going to be a problem. It’s one thing when the Falcons have to replace eight starters, and it’s another to have to do it when so many teams get so much experience back in a super-senior season.

At least the backfield should be fine. Leading rusher Brad Roberts hammered out 461 yards and five scores as fullback, but he could move around where needed.

The offense is missing the top tailbacks, but QB Haaziq Daniels returns as a strong runner and good enough passer. Daniels and Roberts will bright the 1-2 punch, but the offense has to unearth more flash for the outside along with Brandon Lewis, who averaged nine yards per crack.

The entire starting offensive line is starting over, but that’s nothing new. Again, Air Force is used to grooming pavers to be ready to go as upperclassmen, but again, this isn’t the year to need a wholesale overhaul at one unit that was so effective.

As always, it’s the job of the receivers to 1) block, 2) catch a few deep passes per game, 3) block more. TE Kyle Patterson led the team with 12 catches for 205 yards and two scores, but if Lewis is used more as a runner than a receiver, the corps is all but starting over.

Utah State College Football Preview 2021: Offense

It was a rough, rough run for a Utah State offense that’s been on a steady decline over the last few years. The Aggies had one of the nation’s least efficient passing games, the ground game was just okay, and overall the O managed to average just 276 yards and 15.5 points per game. New head coach Blake Anderson cranked up the offensive production at Arkansas State, and he’s bringing in former UCF offensive coordinator Anthony Tucker to get the passing game going again. Get ready for the offense to go fast, fast, fast.

The first step is finding the right quarterback. Jason Shelley is gone, and former Arkansas State playmaker Logan Bonner is coming in. Bonner isn’t huge, but he knows how to do what Anderson wants. However, he’s got a broken foot, leaving the job open with Andrew Peasley and Cooper Legas each getting their shots. Peasley threw for 391 yards and four scores with three picks and finished as the second-leading runner, but this should be Bonner’s gig when he’s healthy.

– The Aggies caught a nice break when top receiver Deven Thompkins decided to stick around. He was initially in the transfer portal, but he’s back after catching 20 passes for 214 yards and a score.  Thanks to the super-senior rule for this year, the top six pass archers are back, helped by 6-6 junior Justin McGriff adding more size along with Thompkins.

The offensive line was a plus, and now it’s expected to get everyone back. It was a young line last year, and with 320-pound super-senior Demytrick Ali’fua returning at center, this should be a strength. Leading rusher Jaylen Warren is gone to Oklahoma State, but 5-8, 195-pound senior Devonta’e Henry-Cole, 220-pound junior Pilate Makakona and Oregon State transfer Calvin Tyler should be solid.

How much fun did the 130 colleges that play both football and men’s basketball provide in this craziest of years?

Every year we take all the 130 teams and rank them based on a which ones had the best combination of seasons in the two major revenue producing sports. Here are the relatively loose ground rules …

– Football is bigger. It just is. Of course some schools care a whole lot more about the hoops side – that’s factored into all of this – but for the most part, football is what drives athletic departments.

– What did you win? Did you win a conference championship, a bowl game, a few games in the NCAA Tournament? Did you make the final four in either sport? That’s the real fun for the fans.

– Schools that had winning seasons in both sports get extra credit. Maybe there wasn’t a championship, but come up with winning campaigns in both sports is terrific.

Boston College Eagles

There’s a lot to like in Year Two under Jeff Hafley, the pass-heavy team should be stronger, and there’s a nice three game tune-up to get ready for the start of the real season that should under with one big thud. The Eagles will win one they shouldn’t lose one they shouldn’t, and go bowling with at least six wins.

Clemson Tigers

It’s all up to the opener against Georgia. That’s the one realistic shot at a loss with a relatively easy-looking ACC slate with no North Carolina or Miami. With a polite nod to Alabama, this should be the best team in college football with nothing more than the annual way-too-close-call brain cramp – maybe at Louisville or Pitt – to worry about.

Florida State Seminoles

It’s Florida State – at some point it has to be good again. It’s not like the ACC is anything killer this year – the Noles will drop the road games to the strong Clemson and North Carolina teams – and there won’t be a win over Florida or Notre Dame. Start with those four losses and hope to push for six wins with few home blips and a win in one of the 50/50 road dates against Wake Forest or Boston College.

Louisville Cardinals

Considering Clemson is a home date, there isn’t a game on the slate the Cardinals can’t win. However, there are more than enough tough battles that could go either way to be concerned. There has to be a win over UCF, Virginia or Kentucky at home, or against Ole Miss in Atlanta to kick things off.

NC State Wolfpack

There are enough winnable games to assume a bowl season, but can the Pack beat Mississippi State? Can they come off of their off week to beat Boston College on the road? It’ll take a big run late to go bowling, but they’ll get there.

Syracuse Orange

Can the Orange block anyone? The O line has to come together fast. The season should come down to two home games – Rutgers and Liberty. There will be a few ACC wins, but the difference between a solid season or another dud will come down to the early September games. Go at least 3-1 to start, or there’s going to be a problem even with a relatively okay slate.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

You know exactly how this works under Dave Clawson. The Demon Deacons will overachieve and win a few ACC games in fun shootouts, they won’t have enough in a few of the bigger road games, and they’ll somehow work their way to six-to-eight wins on the way to a bowl game. However, there’s one big concern – North Carolina. It’s technically a non-conference game instead of playing some cream-puff to boost up the record.

Duke Blue Devils

There’s a base of three wins built into the cake – Charlotte, North Carolina A&T and Kansas – but where else are the Blue Devils going to make any noise without a massive overall improvement? There will be one win somewhere – like against Georgia Tech – and there will probably be an upset or two along the way, but they’ll be double-digit dogs for most of the ACC season.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Have things started to turn under Geoff Collins? The Yellow Jackets should have more pieces in place, but it’s going to take a few upsets to push for a winning season. Playing Clemson, Notre Dame and Georgia are three losses and going to Miami and Virginia doesn’t help. At least North Carolina and Virginia Tech are at home.

Miami Hurricanes

Start with a loss to Alabama to kick things off, and be afraid of Appalachian State and Michigan State to follow. However, if this is going to be a great season, the Canes need to beat the Mountaineers and Spartans in Hard Rock. There’s no Clemson on the slate, going to Florida State shouldn’t be too tough, and there’s a week off before dealing with North Carolina.

North Carolina Tar Heels

It’s a weird-tough slate for the loaded Tar Heels. There isn’t anyone on the schedule they can’t beat – they don’t have to play Clemson – but Georgia State is the only non-ACCish non-conference game with the date at Notre Dame and home game against Wake Forest both not counting in the ACC standings.

Pitt Panthers

It’s going to be another dangerous Pitt team that will be just good enough to shock someone along the way, and just off enough to not be 100% certain of anything special. It should come down to road games at Tennessee and Virginia Tech and home dates with Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina. The Panthers have to win at least two of those.

Virginia Cavaliers

It’s a dangerous schedule for a good team that’s going to have a hard time pushing for anything special. Win at home against William & Mary, Illinois, Wake Forest, Duke and Georgia Tech, and it’ll easily be a winning season. However, going to BYU won’t be a breeze, but there are only two road games after October 9th.

Virginia Tech Hokies

It’s the Xiest of X factor teams with so many new parts and so much uncertainty. Starting the season with North Carolina doesn’t help and going to West Virginia is a problem, but it’s not that bad an ACC slate even with four of the last five games on the road.
