2021 Preseason CFN Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year

RB Mohamed Ibrahim, Sr. Minnesota

There isn’t a ton of flash, and he might not be at the hype level of a star quarterback, but Ibrahim is a tough, steady producer going into his fourth season as one of the nation’s best running backs.

Minnesota didn’t have the passing game of the 2019 team, and there wasn’t the running back rotation of the 2018 version, but Ibrahim still battled with 20 or more carries in every game. He ran the ball over 200 times in the seven game season for 1,076 yards and 15 scores. He’ll once again be a 100-yard machine.

Keeping with the theme of steady-over-sensational for the Big Ten preseason top players …

2021 Preseason CFN Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

LB Olakunie Fatukasi, Sr. Rutgers

Who’s Olakunie Fatukasi? No, he’s not an elite NFL prospect like some of the other Big Ten defensive talents, and he doesn’t play for Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin or Penn State. Also, Tyshon Fogg might be the longtime main man for the Rutgers defense, but the 6-1, 234-pound senior is a tough all-around defender. All he did was lead the Big Ten in tackles in 2020.

He wasn’t new to the mix. A bit smaller but still tough, he came up with 85 tackles as a junior, but under the new coaching staff he followed it up by doing just about everything with 101 stops with three sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

Minnesota Golden Gophers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– Minnesota has become an interesting mix of offensive styles and talents under PJ Fleck and offensive coordinators Mike Sanford and Matt Simon. The running game is there to be great, the receivers have been fantastic, and the efficiency is usually fine with a strong, balanced attack. If the 2021 version isn’t going to be as strong as the 2019 O, it at least has to be more consistent than 2020.

Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields. Those were the three quarterbacks more efficient than Tanner Morgan in 2019. Not Trevor Lawrence. Not Justin Herbert. Not Kyle Trask. Morgan got dogged for not being at that level in 2020, but he was still decent in the strange seven-game season. Now he has to get his completion level back up over 60% and hit more deep throws along the way.

The receiving corps is still fantastic even with Rashod Bateman off to the Baltimore Ravens. Chris Autman-Bell isn’t exactly the next in the line of great NFL prospects under Fleck, but he’s a fantastic deep threat averaging close to 20 yards per grab last year.

Daniel Jackson is a rising playmaker, and Dylan Wright is an interesting 6-3, 215-pound option coming in from Texas A&M.

This should be the best offensive line by far of the five-year Fleck era. It’s big, it’s experienced, and it just got a whole lot bigger and more experienced with the return of 6-9, 400-pound Daniel Faalele to right tackle after he opted out last season.

The other four starters should in some form around right guard Conner Olson and with Blaise Andries playing where needed now that Faalele is back. Both earned All-Big Ten honors, and Sam Schlueter is a good one at left tackle. This group is going to bash for the fabulous backs returning.

Mohamed Ibrahim is one of the nation’s toughest backs, handling the ball over 200 yards in seven games, and now he’s back along with Cam Riley and Treyson Potts, two 200-pound backs who each averaged over six yards per carry.

Why Minnesota Will Win

Hopefully you lead a rich, fulfilling life and had something better to do than watch the Minnesota 51-46 win over Northwestern. It was ugly, sloppy, and it made the world a sadder place, but it was also a gut-check win for after almost letting it slip away.

The banged up Gophers struggled, but it got to the free throw line – that’s what they do – enough to make them in bulk. They were miserable on the line, but Northwestern was just as bad – Minnesota had more attempts.

That has to happen against the Buckeyes.

This isn’t the game Gopher team that whacked the Buckeyes 77-60 back in early January, but it can still force mistakes, it can still get on the offensive glass, and it – again – can still get to the free throw line.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Minnesota still can’t shoot.

It didn’t hit 40% from the field in any of the last four games, and that continued against Northwestern making just 37%. That’s not going to fly against the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State D isn’t a rock, and it’s not great at stopping the three, but that’s okay – Minnesota can’t shoot from the outside.

The Buckeyes don’t make enough mistakes to give the Gophers easy points, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State commits a TON of fouls.

The Gophers shot 29 free throws in the first meeting, and they’re going to get to the line that much again to stay alive. But Ohio State is better at shooting free throws, and it’s better at shooting, period.

Minnesota is playing with house money at this point, but it’s about to give it all back with one big Buckeye scoring run – and a LONG Gopher drought – to put this away.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Minnesota (13-14) vs Northwestern (9-14) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Minnesota Will Win

Minnesota used to be beautiful.

It beat Michigan back in mid-January, it won a thriller over Purdue, and ….

Boom. The team crashed and burned over the last month, losing seven games including a total clunker to Northwestern. The fight is still there at times, but there simply hasn’t been any luck from the outside and the defense has slipped into the abyss.

So what’s the positive? The Gophers are still solid inside, they don’t screw up and turn the ball over all that often, and no team in America has made more free throws.

And Northwestern is bad.

The Wildcats can’t rebound, they don’t get to the free throw line, and …

Why Northwestern Will Win

Minnesota is awful at the moment.

The rebounding has gone bye-bye, the defense from three has been a disaster, and this is one of the nation’s worst shooting teams. The Wildcats were able to beat the Gophers by simply playing decent defense.

Minnesota hit just 4-of-27 from the field in the 67-59 win, and that’s been a theme. The team hasn’t hit 40% from the field in any of the last four games and hasn’t hit double-digit threes since January.

On the flip side, Northwestern has been shooting better, it’s moving the ball around well, and slow and steady might just win the race. Don’t turn the ball over a tone, and the Cats might have this.

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is too good to keep playing this poorly, but there hasn’t been any signs of life.

The shooting just isn’t good enough, but can Northwestern stay as hot from three as it’s been over the last few games? No, but Minnesota’s defense simply isn’t doing enough.

However, Minnesota will force a few more turnovers, it’ll keep attacking the rim, and it’ll make more free throws in an ugly, ugly win.

Illinois (15-5) vs Minnesota (13-9) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Illinois Will Win

Minnesota got annihilated by the Illini in the first meeting back in mid-December after getting destroyed on the boards.

Illinois came up with 49 rebounds, Minnesota couldn’t shoot, and the result was a 92-65 win – but that’s Illinois. It’s great at owning the rebounding margin, the offense is hitting from the outside on a consistent basis, and the team is moving the ball around as well as anyone in the Big Ten.

Minnesota is dead last in the Big Ten in rebounding margin, it’s not consistent enough from the outside, and it’s not making what it’s taking – the Gophers have been under 30% from three in each of the last four games and eight of the last ten.

However …

Why Minnesota Will Win

Illinois might be gettable on the road.

The team is fantastic, and it’s on a six-game winning streak, but the good road win is against …

Indiana in overtime? The Illini are 5-3 away from Champaign, and it took overtime to get past a bad Nebraska as well as IU. Beating Northwestern in Evanston is no big whoop, and taking down Duke this year doesn’t matter.

So what’s the issue? For whatever reason, Illinois isn’t missing lately at home, and it’s not quite at the same level on the road. It’s not just shooting background – it’s okay from three no matter where it is – but it just hasn’t been as sharp.

On the flip side, in general, Minnesota’s problems are on the road – going 0-8 this year – but it’s been able to own The Barn, and that includes a win over Michigan.

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota will hit the free throws that Illinois won’t.

Illinois is the far better team, but the Gophers will get a bit of a groove back after losing two straight on the road in a fun, tight game that will come down to the final moments.

Minnesota (13-8) vs Indiana (11-9) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Minnesota Will Win

Here come the threes.

Minnesota has an interesting mix of things happening with a whole lot of threes leading to a whole lot of rebounds leading to a whole lot of free throws.

Get the Gophers to the line, and they hammer away with a Big Ten-most made free throws, and Indiana will be more than happy to oblige with a ton of fouls. However …

Why Indiana Will Win

Minnesota might shoot a ton of threes, but it’s also the worst in the Big Ten at making them.

Indiana doesn’t rebound like the Gophers do, but it hasn’t been bad at holding its own on the glass over the last few games.

The Hoosiers don’t do much of anything at a high level, but they’re better on the free throw line than the Gophers are and they’ve been strong lately at stopping the three.

Be careful of the fouls, get on the offensive boards, and keep the Minnesota offense from generating that extra pass to get the easy baskets. And …

What’s Going To Happen

Expect Minnesota to keep struggling on the road.

The Gophers have the right mix of positives to beat a mediocre IU team, but they’re 0-7 on the road this season and 13-1 at home. More than that, they’re just flat away from Williams Arena – they’re getting whacked badly because all of those missed threes are a problem.

They haven’t hit 30% on three in nine of their last 11 games. Indiana will do enough on the boards to make those misses matter.

Purdue (13-7) vs Minnesota (12-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Purdue Will Win

It wasn’t all that hard a few weeks ago.

The Boilermakers rocked the Gophers in an 81-62 win at the end of January when everything was falling from three and the other side just couldn’t keep up.

Minnesota has been leaking oil over the second half of the season five losses in the last seven games because 1) it’s not shooting well, 2) it’s not shooting well from the outside, and 3) no, really, Minnesota can’t shoot at all from three.

Purdue does a whole lot of things wrong, but it’s a steady rock form the field hitting 40% or better over the last month in every game but the loss to Michigan. Minnesota has hit more than 40% of its shots twice in the last seven games, but …

Why Minnesota Will Win

There’s a big problem defensively forcing mistakes, and the offense turns it over just enough to be a problem. And then there’s the bigger issue …

Purdue is shooting well, but it doesn’t score a whole lot.

It can get hot once in a while and get rolling, but it’s an inconsistent offensive team that hasn’t been able to get to 70 points five times in the last nine games.  Minnesota can’t shoot, but it can rebound and it can force mistakes. It’ll have to manufacture points in this on the move.

What’s Going To Happen

This will be one of those Minnesota energy games it’s able to bring every now and then at home. It’s only the fourth game in The Barn since very early January, and while that doesn’t mean too much crowd-wise, expect. good all-around performance. The Gophers will win on the boards and will hit – wait for it – a real, live three-point shot once in a while.

Here are five things about the 2021 Big Ten football schedule that matter including who misses the big teams from the other division, the non-conference analysis, the one big difference in this year’s slate, the winners and losers, and starting out with …

5.  Who gets the rested teams?

The Big Ten does a terrific job of not letting any one team’s schedule get loaded up with games against teams that get a break. If possible, everyone would love to have an extra week to rest and prepare for Ohio State, Wisconsin, or Penn State, but that doesn’t happen.

Ask Alabama over in the SEC what it’s been like over the years to seemingly get everyone with fresh legs.

Every team gets at least one week off, and every team has at least one total layup against an FCS team or against a lightweight FBSer. What teams then get hit with the relaxed opponents?

Again, the Big Ten does a good job of this. It’s relatively fair.
