Michigan vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Just keep the machine going.

Michigan hasn’t been anything too spectacular, but that’s not its style. It’s going to pound away with the offensive line and the running game, it all starts to break through in the second half, and the defense holds up and takes care of the rest.

It might make life a little bit nervous for the fans, but eventually the dam breaks.

There aren’t going to be enough turnovers to give Rutgers any help – just five giveaways all year – the defense should stuff everything on third downs, and …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Rutgers Will Win

Can Rutgers finally come up with one of those games when the defense rises up and rocks?

It’s going to take a ton of takeaways – and a sloppy effort from Michigan – to make this happen, and the defense has showed at times it can force enough mistakes to at least keep things close.

The defense is getting the job done. It’s only allowing 295 yards per game overall, the run D is among the best in the country, and the special teams are just strong enough to tilt the field to the other side. However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, overall the Rutgers defense is getting the job done, but it just got run over by Minnesota to 253 yards and four scores.

Yeah, the style slows the game down and keeps most games from getting too far out of hand, but the offense isn’t there to take advantage of the opportunities.

As always, Michigan won’t be able to pull away in the first half and the base will feel a tad worried, and it’ll all break through in the second half.

Michigan State vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Spartans – particularly head coach Mel Tucker – have a strange mind grip over Jim Harbaugh and Michigan.

The Wolverines rolled through the Big Ten last year, beat Ohio State, blasted Iowa in the conference championship, and … lost to Michigan State.

The 2020 Spartan team was awful in a 2-5 season. It lost to Rutgers, couldn’t score against Indiana, and … beat Michigan.

The Spartans might have bailed out their season with the overtime win over Wisconsin two weeks ago – the passing game clicked – helped by two takeaways. They have to throw well and force mistakes, which wouldn’t be against the normal against that team from Ann Arbor.

How did they beat Michigan last year? Kenneth Walker went crazy, but the offense was balanced, the defense held up against the run, and the two takeaways helped.

Under Tucker, MSU has won its last eight games when coming up with multiple takeaways. Michigan has lost the ball two or more times twice this year, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan State is 0-4 this year when not forcing multiple takeaways. Michigan has only turned it over four times and haven’t given it up more than once against anyone.

Everyone but Wisconsin has been able to throw at will on the Spartan secondary, and Michigan will give it a shot. Of course the idea is to stop the running game first, but JJ McCarthy has been sharp – he threw for over 300 yards in the win over Indiana and hits over 70% of his passes – and then everything else bust through from there.

Michigan’s offensive line has been fantastic. It’s going to pound away on a Spartan defensive front that was beaten up by Minnesota and Ohio State, and gave up five yards per pop to Maryland.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Will this be another one of those Michigan State performances against Michigan that defies all logic and reason?

You don’t win the last two meetings and three of the last five against your rival without knowing how to troll, tweak, and control the situation.

The Michigan secondary can be thrown on, and it’s up Payton Thorne and the strong receiving corps to bomb away from the start and keep the pressure on, but can the Spartan D hold up?

Not really.

The Spartans will be hot early on the way to a first quarter lead. Michigan will sputter, cough, and make too many mistakes – penalties will be a problem – and then midway through the third quarter the O line will take over.

There won’t be the avalanche like the Wolverines came up with in the second half of the 41-17 win over Penn State, but they’ll grab the momentum with the ground game and MSU won’t be able to get it back.

Penn State vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

The offense has found a nice groove.

Amazingly balanced, the offense has a good combination of dangerous running backs, QB Sean Clifford, and a line that’s doing a solid job of keeping defenses out of the backfield. The attack might not be a thrill a minute, but it’s extremely effective.

Forget the sloppy, rain-soaked win over Northwestern when no one could hang on to the ball – Penn State gave it up five times in the 17-7 uggo – the offense doesn’t have a turnover issue. As long as the offense can keep the mistakes to a bare minimum, the other side should take over.

The Penn State run defense has been a brick wall allowing fewer than 80 yards per game. Stop Michigan from running, pressure JJ McCarthy, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Michigan Will Win

Yeah, the Penn State run defense has been great. That’s what happens when you don’t face anyone who can run.

Auburn has good backs, but the offense isn’t working against anyone. Ohio is throwing it a gajillion times per game, and Purdue chooses to travel by air. Of course Penn State has talent up front to hold up, but it hasn’t dealt with anyone who can pound away.

Blake Corum and the rushing attack should be able to grind – even if the explosive runs aren’t there – and McCarthy is settling in hitting 76% of his throws over the last two games.

The Michigan defense has been better than Penn State’s, the pass rush has been stronger, and the offense is much, much stronger on third downs. For all of the good things Penn State does, it’s only 34% on third down conversions.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

How do you know Michigan is good? It was awful against Indiana – ten penalties, a turnover, struggles in key moments early – and still won 31-10.

It might have been tough to put away Maryland, and the Indiana win was tougher than it should’ve been, but it’s been building to this.

Penn State has a ton of talent, athleticism, and parts to make this a fight throughout. Michigan will stall too often after the Nittany Lions get up early, but slow and steady will win the race.

The Penn State attack will struggle late, McCarthy will come up with one terrific drive to finally give the home side the lead, and Clifford’s last two passes will misfire to close out a tense thriller.

Michigan vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Ooooooh, Iowa scored 27 points for two weeks in a row.

The defense continues to be great, but the passing game has yet to push past 175 yards and everything is still a struggle.

Third down conversions are a rumor, the ground game hasn’t been anything great, and overall, even with the two wins, Iowa is still dead last in the nation in total offense.

Yes, the defense makes up for it – it’s No. 1 in the country in scoring D – and takeaways are a concern, but there’s no ability whatsoever to mount any semblance of a comeback if the Wolverines can get up fast.

With some due respect to Iowa State – animals were walking two by two on the field in the 10-7 Iowa win in the rain – the Hawkeye D has yet to face anyone who can pound away.

The Michigan offensive front is killing everyone, Blake Corum is the hottest running back in college football, and overall there’s a great consistency to what the offense can do.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Iowa Will Win

Can the Iowa defense and overall style be enough to stuff the Michigan offense?

Yeah, Iowa hasn’t exactly dealt with the Buffalo Bills so far, but Michigan has yet to face a defense that can put up even the slightest resistance.

On the one side, the Wolverines had three tune-ups and then passed the test against Maryland. The Iowa defense attacks more, does a better job of taking the ball away with seven forced turnovers in the last three games, and it’s going to generate pressure on JJ McCarthy.

The Michigan quarterback was more than fine in the win over the Terps, but he wasn’t able to do much with his legs and the explosiveness wasn’t quite there with the passing game.

This game might be all about who’ll blink. Iowa hasn’t turned the ball over in the last two games, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan hasn’t given away a thing.

One interception against Hawaii, one fumble against Maryland. That’s been in for the turnovers. The team has been flagged a ridiculously low nine times, and it’s been able to get through any slight adversity by being methodical.

This is the game for the Michigan defense.

The offense will sputter and cough, and Corum will be bottled up, but it’ll be a slow and steady drum beat with just enough points to get by. The Wolverine D will hold up well with a great day against the non-existent Iowa passing attack.
