MSU Basketball listed surprisingly low in initial NET rankings

The initial NET rankings were released on Monday, and Michigan State basketball was surprisingly low

The initial NET rankings were released on Monday, and Michigan State basketball was surprisingly low.

Michigan State came in at No. 41 in the first batch of rankings released on Monday. That is surprisingly low for a team that is just outside the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 and just inside at No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

The NET rankings — which stands for NCAA Evaluation Tool — is used as the contemporary sorting tool to measure a team’s quality and help evaluate team resumes for selection and seeding in the NCAA tournament. This is simply another tool similar to KenPom or other similar power rankings systems.

Michigan State is 6-2 overall and 1-2 in Quad 1 games this year. The Spartans’ rankings is most likely lower than expected due to narrow wins over Bowling Green and Samford — who are not highly-rated teams.

The Spartans will get the opportunity to boost their NET ranking in a pair of conference games this week. Michigan State first heads to Minnesota on Wednesday before hosting Nebraska on Saturday.

MSU G Jase Richardson set to return at Minnesota on Wednesday

Michigan State basketball is set to get back one of its top scorers for Wednesday’s Big Ten opener against Minnesota

Michigan State basketball is set to get back one of its top scorers for Wednesday’s Big Ten opener against Minnesota.

Spartans freshman guard Jase Richardson is “good to go” for Wednesday’s road game against Minnesota. Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press reported the notable injury news on Monday evening.

Richardson sat out the final game of the Maui Invitational due to concussion protocol. Michigan State was able to win that game against North Carolina despite Richardson being out.

Through seven games this year, Richardson is averaging 10.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2 assists per game. He ranks third on the Spartans in scoring.

Tipoff from Minnesota is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Watch MSU beat reporter, columnist break down Spartans’ loss vs. Rutgers

Hear what Graham Couch and Chris Solari had to say following the Spartans’ loss vs. Rutgers

Michigan State football fell flat on its face in a must-win game. And, that performance ended their season.

The Spartans hosted Rutgers as a slight favorite on Saturday afternoon, but it was the Scarlet Knights that took care of business. Michigan State lost by the final score of 41-14.

Michigan State came into this game needing a victory over Rutgers to clinch a bowl berth. However, the blowout loss ended that, and clinched a third straight year without a bowl berth. Michigan State ends the 2024 season with a 5-7 overall record and 3-6 mark in conference play.

Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal and Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press are back for one final recap video on a Spartans’ football game this year. Click here to see the complete recap video of the Spartans’ loss from Solari and Couch.
