LOOK: MSU basketball moves up in NET rankings despite loss to Purdue

The Spartans have lost three straight games but their NET ranking has remained relatively high during the skid

The Spartans have lost three straight games but their NET ranking has remained relatively high during the skid.

Michigan State came up short in a tough battle at Purdue on Saturday night, which dropped them to 17-12 overall and 9-9 in Big Ten play. That loss, however, didn’t hurt the Spartans in the NET rankings but actually boosted them two spots. Michigan State now sits at No. 22 overall in the NET rankings.

The NET rankings are a metric used to help determine who will make the NCAA Tournament. Michigan State’s record suggests they are in trouble of missing of the big dance, but the NET rankings points to them having a good chance at still making it.

Michigan State will look to snap its three-game losing streak in their next game against Northwestern on Wednesday. After that, Michigan State will head to Indiana to finish up the regular season on Sunday. The Spartans could use a pair of wins to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and at a minimum must win at least one of those games.

MSU basketball listed as one of top Big Ten teams in latest NET rankings

See where MSU lands in the latest batch of NET rankings

Michigan State isn’t near the top of the standings in the Big Ten right now, but they are considered one of the league’s best teams by NET standards.

An updated batch of NET rankings were released on Wednesday, which had the Spartans listed as one of the top teams from the Big Ten. Michigan State comes in at No. 27 nationally, which is behind only Purdue (No. 3), Illinois (No. 9) and Wisconsin (No. 16) in the Big Ten.

The NET rankings system is utilized by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee for the 2024 field. Michigan State is currently 9-6 overall this year, but despite a poor record, appears to be still in a great position to reach the tournament.

MSU basketball rises in updated NET rankings after Baylor win

Michigan State basketball looked dominant against Baylor on Saturday.

Michigan State basketball looked dominant against Baylor on Saturday, and because of that they were rewarded in Sunday’s updated batch of NET rankings.

The Spartans shot up 34 spots in Sunday’s updated batch of NET rankings to land at No. 45 nationally. Michigan State was previously sitting at No. 79.

The NET rankings metric is used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee as a tool to help determine which teams end up in the big dance. So moving up this many spots following the marquee win over Baylor is very significant for Michigan State. They’ll need to keep winning in order to continue to move up but this was certainly a great start for the Spartans after a brutal opening month to the season.

MSU basketball gets big boost in NET, KenPom rankings after win over OSU

Michigan State’s win over Ohio State could go a long way in continuing the Spartans’ NCAA Tournament streak

Michigan State’s win over Ohio State may just go a long way in returning to the NCAA Tournament.

While the Buckeyes have been struggling as of late — losers in 11 of their last 12 games — they still are ranked high in the NET and KenPom rankings. So the Spartans’ convincing road win over Ohio State on Sunday meant Michigan State saw a big boost in each ranking.

According to Kyle Austin of MLive, Michigan State moved up nine spots in the NET rankings to No. 32 and 11 spots in KenPom to No. 30. That is a very sizable jump in both rankings from just one game’s result.

Michigan State will return to the floor on Wednesday in a home game against Minnesota. Tip-off from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
