With reports that Michigan State has found their head coach, Oregon State now joins the carousel.
It felt like the worst-kept secret in college football once Football Scoop broke the news that Michigan State wanted Jonathan Smith as the Spartans’ next head coach.
On Saturday, reports surfaced that Smith would indeed become the next head coach in East Lansing. The news comes not even 24 hours after Smith’s Oregon State Beavers fell to in-state rival Oregon 31-7 in the regular season finale. Oregon State will have to name an interim head coach to lead the program in their upcoming bowl game.
For Smith, his next steps will involve putting together a coaching staff and hitting the recruiting trails. Michigan State made it official on Saturday.
A new era of Spartan Football is here!
Please welcome Jonathan Smith as the 26th Head Coach in program history.
Smith finishes with a record of 34-35 at his alma mater where he played quarterback from 1998 to 2001. Since 2021, the Beavers are 25-13 with a bowl win last season over Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl.
It will remain to be seen how quickly Smith can turn around a Michigan State program, that just finished a 4-8 season. Stay tuned to Spartans Wire for more on Michigan State and Jonathan Smith.
For Oregon State, they will join the coaching carousel. It is a tough sell for a school that doesn’t have a conference home after the season with 10 of the 12 members leaving ahead of 2024.
The Buckeyes offense had one of their best games of the year so far as they scored touchdowns on five of their first six drives to take a 35-3 lead heading into the halftime break.
Kyle McCord looked the best he’s looked all season as he threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns. Marvin Harrison Jr. saw his Heisman odds surge as he scored the Buckeyes first three touchdowns and finished with 168 total yards.
In this article we break down McCord, Harrison Jr. and the rest of the offense’s performance using Pro Football Focus grades for each player. Though not the ultimate measuring stick, PFF is a good tool because it grades every player on every play.

Ohio State moved to 10-0 with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball in a 38-3 win over Michigan State in the Buckeyes only home night game of the season.
The Buckeyes’ defense has established itself as one of the best in all of college football and this performance further cemented that. After allowing three points to Michigan State, Ohio State has allowed 99 in 10 games (9.9 allowed per game).

What thoughts do you still have following the Buckeyes win over Michigan State?
It’s been just about 24 hours since [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] soundly defeated Michigan State at home, 38-3, but Buckeye thoughts still are going through my head.
There was plenty to like about what the Buckeyes were able to accomplish on Saturday evening, most notably winning the game, improving to 10-0 and still having every single major goal within reach.
Ohio State didn’t see any movement in either major poll, but it was ranked No. 1 in the only one that matters, the College Football Playoff rankings. That might change this coming week, but as I do every Sunday, here are my final thoughts on the Buckeyes win over the Spartans.
The Buckeyes took care of business early in this matchup as they scored touchdown on five of their six first half possessions to build a 35-3 lead headed into the halftime break.
Marvin Harrison Jr. was once again the star of the show as he scored the Buckeyes’ first three touchdowns and finished with 168 total yards.
This was the seventh time this season Harrison Jr. has gone over 100 yards in a game and gives him 1,063 receiving yards and 13 total touchdowns through three games this season.
Kyle McCord had one his best performances of the season, throwing for 335 yards and three touchdowns, most of which came in the first half.
On the other side of the ball the defense put together yet another dominant performance, holding Spartans to just 182 yards and three points on the scoreboard.
Points allowed by Ohio State's defense through 10 games the last 3 seasons.
In the first half, the Buckeyes started fast and furious thanks to Marvin Harrison Jr. and Kyle McCord. The second half produced a better effort from the Spartans, but that was more or less when the Scarlet and Gray foot came off the gas pedal once the outcome was no longer in doubt.
MSU interim head coach Harlon Barnett met with the media after the game and talked about what he saw from his team but also used Ohio State as an example of the gap between where his program is and where it wants to go.
We had one of our writers on hand to grab some video of Barnett’s postgame press conference and we have it for you to digest what he said about the Buckeyes. Watch and listen to Barnett talk about how good Ohio State is, the play of Marvin Harrison Jr., and more.
Now that Michigan State is headed back to East Lansing, the Buckeyes will begin preparations to host Minnesota next Saturday. We will, of course, have coverage leading up to the game on Saturday so come back often this week for plenty of analysis and opinion.

Watch and listen to everything Ryan Day said after the win over Michigan State. #GoBucks
Well, that was more like it. We finally got to sit back and watch an Ohio State football game without too much teeth gnashing and handwringing with the Buckeyes’ public flogging of Michigan State, 38-3.
Honestly, the score wasn’t indicative of how dominant the Buckeyes were, and it might be the most complete game OSU has played, right at the time of the year when you want everything to start coming together.
Head coach Ryan Day met with the media after the game to discuss what he saw from his team. Here is the complete press conference thanks to the Ohio State Buckeyes YouTube channel. Day discussed the play of Kyle McCord, the timing of getting some of key players back on offense, how the offense is starting to come around and much more.
The first three minutes of the press conference is missing sound, but the rest of Day’s comments are loud and clear so hang in there.
Ohio State will now prepare to host Minnesota next week in the penultimate matchup before the big one we all know is coming at Michigan in two weeks.

Five things we took from Ohio State’s win over Michigan State. #GoBucks
Well, it’s been awhile since we’ve been able to sit back and relax in a low-stress type of football game for Ohio State, but that’s what we got on Saturday with the Buckeyes racing out to a commanding, early lead thanks to a bushel of touchdowns from receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and quarterback Kyle McCord’s most polished game of the year.
And so, OSU kept its record undefeated, improving to 10-0 on the season with a 38-3 win over Michigan State to keep things between the guardrails on the road towards a massive clash with Michigan on November 25.
After each game, we like to look at the action on the field and look as some things we can take away as lessons we think we learned from the Buckeyes’ performance on the field.
Here are five things we think we learned after OSU’s dominance over the Spartans on Saturday night.
Ohio State football vs Michigan State: Five observations halftime review
Welcome to halftime of the Ohio State football game, where the Buckeyes are moving fast and furiously through the Michigan State defense. As we enter halftime, the Buckeyes are leading the Spartans to the tune of 35-3.
With the odds close to five touchdowns, Ohio State is actually exceeding expectations and there is not too much to complain about, which is a good thing.
I know the Spartans aren’t the toughest opponent, but the Buckeyes have come out slow against the lowest of lowly opponents and some of the things we are seeing are impressive no matter who is on the opposite sideline.
These are the five most interesting things from the first half we took out as observations.
