Florida State vs Miami Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

Forget for a moment that Miami might have its main man back at quarterback – there’s a bigger issue in play for the Canes.

The run defense hasn’t seen anything like this.

The stats are good, the Miami defensive front is great at getting into the backfield, and yet it’s about to deal with a ground attack that’s been able to work against good teams and bad.

Even in the three game losing streak before the win over Georgia Tech, the Noles were able to get their guys in space to tear off big run after big run against Clemson and NC State, cranking up over 200 rushing yards in each game.

Combine the ACC’s best ground attack with the ACC’s best downfield passing game – the Noles average over 14 yards per completion – and the Miami defense that dealt with the North Carolina offense, and that’s about it, will be under siege.

But …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Miami Will Win

QB Tyler Van Dyke should be back from his shoulder injury.

All indications are that he’ll give it a go, and that’s a must for a Miami offense without a ground game to rely on. The passing attack has to work for the run-less offense to move, and it will.

The Florida State defense has been solid. The pass rush is good, but that shouldn’t bother Van Dyke. He’ll be able to spread it around to get to at least 200 yards with a few scores, but the team will need a few breaks.

The Noles aren’t horrible when it comes to turnovers, but they’re getting walloped by penalties with ten or more in their last three games. Miami is good enough on third downs on both sides of the ball to take advantage of every flag to keep things moving.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State will have too much offensive balance.

It’ll start with the ground game that will generate gashing runs, and it’ll continue with an efficient passing attack that will should be able to keep pace with whatever Van Dyke can produce.

Turnovers will mean everything. Miami has turned it over 14 times in the four losses and twice in the four wins. FSU doesn’t come up with a ton of takeaways, but it’ll get two in this.

Miami vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

Virginia’s offense isn’t going to run away with this.

The team might be coming off a win over Georgia Tech to keep bowl dreams alive, but the offense is still sputtering and the Miami defense is just good enough to keep the struggles going.

It starts with the sacks and overall pressure that should bother everyone in the backfield enough to generate a slew of negative plays. Do that, and the offense that’s happy to give the ball away multiple times – it has done that in every game so far – will help the Hurricane offense.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers are 3-0 when coming up with over 320 yards and 0-4 when they don’t. Miami’s defense is solid, but allows 345 yards per game and over 320 in three of the last four games – all losses.

That matters, and why? The Hurricane offense isn’t all that good at scoring, and there are plenty of question marks this week with banged up QB Tyler Van Dyke still not 100% and Jake Garcia the likely starter.

No, the Hurricanes aren’t going to turn it over eight times again like they did in the loss to Duke last week, and they’re not going to get flagged 17 times like they did two weeks ago against Virginia Tech, but they seem to find ways not to score, so …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This should be kept in the 20s on both sides – each team will have its chances.

Both teams are incredibly shaky, and both have major problems. Miami does a few more things right, and as long as it doesn’t royally screw this up – hardly a given – it’ll slink on by.

Miami won’t royally screw up, but it’ll turn it over just enough for Virginia to get out with a tough win.

Miami vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devils might have lost three of their last four, but they’re playing well.

The last two losses were by three points each, the offense picked it back up with a good balance against North Carolina, and the passing game continues to be effective.

The team doesn’t beat itself. There aren’t a ton of penalties, the four turnovers have been spread out, and the special teams are good enough to not be a problem.

Meanwhile, Miami is sputtering along.

Oh sure, it stopped a three-game losing slide with a win over Virginia Tech, but it was hardly dominant – even though the two touchdowns allowed in the 20-14 win came late.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Miami Will Win

Can Miami bomb its way to a win?

The secondary will give up at least 250 yards, but it’s possible to hit the Blue Devil pass defense that struggled against North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Jalon Daniels of Kansas.

QB Tyler Van Dyke doesn’t have to take a ton of chances. He has to hit at least 65% of his throws and keep everything moving against the ACC’s worst defense on third downs.

Yes, Duke hasn’t been bad in the losses over the last month, but the passing production hasn’t been consistent and the run defense has been a bit spotty.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Miami doesn’t do anything easy.

Scoring is like pulling teeth at times, but the passing game is good enough to pile up the yards and respond better than Duke will.

Both teams will keep it close in a back-and-forth fight, but it’ll all come down to whether or not the Hurricanes can keep the turnovers to a minimum.

Duke will have its chances late – the running game will take over at times in the second half – but Miami will hold on for dear life.

Miami vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

The Hurricanes can fix this.

It’s been a rough three game losing streak, but the offense threw well against North Carolina – okay, so that’s hardly difficult to do – and the ground game worked against Texas A&M.

The pass rush is great, the special teams are solid, and the team is good at controlling the time of possession battle.

So what’s the problem? Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

The Hurricanes aren’t able to overcome adversity in any way over the last three games. Penalties aren’t an issue, but the seven giveaways have been a killer.

That’s where Virginia Tech’s defense comes in – it doesn’t take the ball away. It forced two fumbles in the loss to Old Dominion in the opener, and it came up with just three takeaways over the next five games.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies can fix this.

It’s been a rough three game losing streak, but the turnovers have slowed since the disastrous opener against ODU and the defense is the best in the ACC at coming up with third down stops.

So what’s the problem? The little things – like scoring.

Penalties were a killer against West Virginia, the inability to take the ball away has been a huge problem and – for this program – the special teams haven’t been good enough.

More than anything else the offense is having a hard time converting drives into points. Miami’s secondary can be thrown on, it’s not picking off passes, and in this it’s up to Grant Wells to come up with a brilliant performance at home to pull this off.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like these two teams don’t know how to put the puzzle together.

The two new head coaches are going to need a little while. Brent Pry’s Hokies don’t have any one thing they can do well, but it feels like one big win might be able to flip a switch.

It’s not happening this week.

Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes are way overdue to come up with something big.

The defense will keep the Hokies from running, Wells won’t be able to do enough to keep the attack moving late, and the slide will stop.
