Why Miami Will Win

Virginia’s offense isn’t going to run away with this.

The team might be coming off a win over Georgia Tech to keep bowl dreams alive, but the offense is still sputtering and the Miami defense is just good enough to keep the struggles going.

It starts with the sacks and overall pressure that should bother everyone in the backfield enough to generate a slew of negative plays. Do that, and the offense that’s happy to give the ball away multiple times – it has done that in every game so far – will help the Hurricane offense.

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers are 3-0 when coming up with over 320 yards and 0-4 when they don’t. Miami’s defense is solid, but allows 345 yards per game and over 320 in three of the last four games – all losses.

That matters, and why? The Hurricane offense isn’t all that good at scoring, and there are plenty of question marks this week with banged up QB Tyler Van Dyke still not 100% and Jake Garcia the likely starter.

Both teams are incredibly shaky, and both have major problems. Miami does a few more things right, and as long as it doesn’t royally screw this up – hardly a given – it’ll slink on by.

Why Miami Will Win

For all of Miami’s problems and issues, it’s been strong on the boards, excellent at getting to the free throw line, and it’s been just good enough from the field at times to stay in games.

It was able to push Virginia Tech into overtime after hitting more than 40% from the field, and it beat Duke after hitting 53% of its shots. Virginia will be more than happy to bog things down times and keep this about control, but the Canes have to make everything.

The Cavalier defense has hit the skids over the last three games allowing FSU, Duke and NC State to combine to hit almost half of their shots. Miami has to jump on that momentum.

Why Virginia Will Win

Eventually, Virginia will be Virginia again.

It isn’t shooting well enough, it’s not doing enough to stop teams from hitting from the outside, and it’s just not playing like the team that was rolling through the season without any big blips.

The shooting is still fine, there isn’t a problem at getting to the free throw line, and there aren’t any major glitches other than the defense that’s being hit with haymakers.

Miami doesn’t shoot well enough on a consistent basis to do what the last three teams have been able to do agains the Cavs.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia will finally snap out of its defensive funk.

Miami won’t hit the threes like Florida State did, it’s not going to make 51% of its shots to keep up like Duke was able to do.

The Canes haven’t been all that close against anyone on the road since beating NC State back in early January.

Can Virginia somehow get its defensive groove back?

As it turns out, Miami fattened up on a few mediocre teams before getting flattened by Clemson. Last week it caught a break by not facing Pitt starting quarterback Kenny Pickett, and it was still a fight to get the 31-19 win.

This might be a much stronger Hurricane team that the 2019 version, but it’s been a slight disappointment at controlling the clock and allowing teams to get into the backfield, and it’s getting penalized left and right.

Virginia has struggled from the start, but the defensive experience and talent are there to start doing more. It’s rested – the Cavaliers lead the ACC in time of possession – and the offensive line is doing a decent job, but …

Why Miami Will Win

Virginia’s offense is working, and it’s still not bringing the wins.

The rushing attack was great against Wake Forest – almost perfectly balancing out the offense – and it was a loss.

The passing game rocked against NC State – and it was a loss.

The Virginia offense failed to hit the 400-yard mark six times in the first eight games last year, and it got there in all four games this season – and the team is 1-3.

However, the O is awful on third downs, and it’s not doing enough to push the ball down the field.

Miami has to get back to grinding out the running game. It was hammering away in the first three games, couldn’t do anything against Clemson, and had to deal with the Pitt defensive front last week. This is the game for the Cane offense to get tough again.

Can Miami cut into the Virginia time of possession advantage? The Cavalier defense has to hold up when it gets its chances, and it won’t.

D’Eriq King might have thrown four touchdown passes against Pitt, but he gave away two picks in each of the last two games and and hasn’t been accurate enough. That changes this week.
