Memphis vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves weren’t that bad in the loss to Ohio State.

They couldn’t run the ball, but the defense held up relatively well in the 45-12 loss. Now they get a Memphis defense that’s been awful on this downs, couldn’t handle the Mississippi State passing game, dealt with the Navy ground attack, and isn’t get enough out of its own offense.

Seth Henigan and the passing attack went off against Navy, and there were a few good runs from the O against Miss State, but Arkansas State should be able to control the game and the clock and keep the Tiger O off the field.

For all of the issues early on, the Red Wolves have kept the ball for close to 37 minutes. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Memphis Will Win

The Arkansas State offensive line has been mediocre in pass protection and should have a rough day keeping the Tigers out of the backfield.

Memphis hasn’t cranked up the pass rushing production so far, but it should bring the head from several sides and keep pressuring the backfield.

The Red Wolves have enough offensive playmakers to keep up, but they’re not necessarily built to keep up in a shootout. as long as Henigan can find a groove early, Memphis has the parts to be more consistent.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas State is slowly getting better under Butch Jones.

The defense can get behind the line, and the offense isn’t turning it over and creating a slew of problems. This isn’t going to be a pushover team like it’s been over the last few years.

Memphis will have just a little more offense in the second half, the running game that wasn’t there against Navy will work, and it’ll be an interesting fight that will still be competitive into the fourth quarter.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Memphis (1-0) vs Arkansas State (1-0) Game Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

The defense might have been a tad iffy against Nicholls in the 42-17 win, but the offense showed it could move on from the Brady White days.

New starting QB Seth Henigan wasn’t razor sharp, but he hit enough downfield plays to be fine. The running game took care of the rest with over 300 yards, and there really wasn’t any drama even though the D gave up some yards.

Arkansas State might have a good defensive front, but the Tigers should be able to run the ball just enough to keep on hammering away. Slow and steady isn’t how the Tiger O works, but in this case, the trickle could lead to a waterfall – the big plays will be there as the game goes on.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas State Will Win

Butch Jones got his first win as the Arkansas State head coach with a 40-21 day against Central Arkansas, and it helps that he has his quarterbacks to carry the load.

While former part-of-the-puzzle QB Logan Bonner left with Blake Anderson to Utah State, former Florida State starter James Blackman stepped up and showed he’ll be just fine under the new coaching staff. Layne Hatcher was even better, making all 12 of his throws for 150 yards and four scores.

The Red Wolves have the lines to hold up against the Tigers, the defense is going to be improved under Jones as the season goes on, and there might just be the right mix to pull this off it the D can keep the big gashes to a minimum.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be fun.

With all the positives and good things happening in the Sun Belt, it’s almost like Arkansas State has been forgotten about. Jones has the pieces in place to make a whole lot of noise, and pulling off a win over the Tigers would be massive.

It’ll be a back-and-forth game with the Arkansas State quarterbacks playing a bit stronger than Henigan, but Memphis will come up with a few more big plays to get out alive.

In a season full of low scoring battles so far, hope for this one to go back-and-forth for a full four quarters.

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Arkansas State offense has the chops to keep up with whatever the Memphis attack puts on the board.

It won’t matter if it’s Logan Bonner or Layne Hatcher at quarterback, the Red Wolves will crank up a passing game with the firepower to put up 300 yards through the air and score in bunches.

The Memphis defense should be a bit better as the season goes on under new defensive coordinator Mike McIntyre, but it’s not going to be a brick wall right away. ASU will come up with just enough of a ground game to take some of the pressure off of the rest of the offense.

The Red Wolves get a wee bit of a break defensively with Memphis star RB Kenneth Gainwell choosing to opt out on the 2020 season, but …

CFN 2020 Arkansas State Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

The Arkansas State defense is going to be in for a long, long day.

Again, the offense should be strong enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but the defensive side that was 124th in the nation last year has to replace a whole slew of big producers from last year’s group.

On the other side, the ASU offensive line might get back a ton of experience, but it was but a soft breeze against most decent pass rushes last year. Now it has to go against a Tiger pass rush that gets back Joseph Dorceus and a whole slew of other active playmakers.

No, the Memphis defense won’t shut down the ASU offense to a dead stop, but it’ll hold its own just enough in key moments to turn good drives into field goal attempts.

CFN 2020 Memphis Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Be upset is there aren’t a whole lot of fireworks.

Even without Gainwell, Memphis and new head coach Ryan Silverfield – in his first regular season game as the main man – will be more than fine. The offense should be able to keep the big plays from last season going against a mediocre ASU defense.

The Red Wolves will do their part to make Memphis keep pressing. They won’t go away, but they won’t be able to keep up in the fourth quarter.

In a new era, look for the Tigers to make a statement, at least offensively.
