Michigan State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Okay … what’s up?

This is a good team. There’s talent, Mel Tucker and staff didn’t suddenly forget how to coach, and it’s quite possible that Washington and Minnesota are just that good.

But yeah, it’s been a rough two weeks in blowout losses – even with a decent 39-28 final score against the Huskies.

The passing game is still playing okay. The midrange throws are there, the defensive front was fine until Minnesota had other ideas, and overall the fundamentals are still strong.

So how does this flip back around? It starts with getting a little positive momentum, and that starts with takeaways.

Maryland has come up with multiple turnovers in just one of the top four games, and the offense has given it up five times in the last two outings, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Maryland Will Win

Michigan State was exposed.

That might seem harsh, but the pass defense that was so bad last year was a disaster against the Huskies and Gophers, and the running game that lost Kenneth Walker didn’t generate any semblance of a push in either game.

There’s a great pass rush, but the D can’t come up with a third down stop and now it has to deal with the Maryland passing attack that’s going to keep on coming.

Michigan might have run over the Terps, but Taulia Tagovailoa will spread the ball around – six different targets have ten or more catches so far – and hit his share of deep shots.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Michigan State control the game and the clock – that’s been a big issue so far – by getting the ground game going again?

SMU ran well on the Terps, Michigan ripped off over six yards per carry, and now the Spartans will do their part in an enough-is-enough sort of way after the last two weeks.

The turnover battle will swing back MSU’s way.

Michigan vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

The Terp passing game is clicking, and it’s by far the toughest attack Michigan has seen so far.

Taulia Tagovailoa has been in total command, hitting 77% of his passes for 895 yards and six touchdowns with two picks. The receiving combination of Rakim Jarrett, Jeshaun Jones, and TE Corey Dyches has been fantastic, the running game is averaging over six yards per carry, and there aren’t any misfires when the O gets its shot at scoring.

The defense is just okay, but it finally started taking the ball away with three turnovers forced in the 34-27 win over SMU, and the pressure is going to be on the Michigan offensive side now because …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Michigan Will Win

You wanted to see JJ McCarthy as the main man, Michigan fans, and now you got him.

With Cade McNamara getting hurt in the win over UConn, now the star No. 1B gets to run the attack. He’ll have to prove he can do the job full-time without making a slew of mistakes, but he’ll run better, he’s been fantastic so far when he’s had his chances – hitting 88% of his throws for 473 yards and three touchdowns with no picks – and he doesn’t have to do it all.

The Michigan offensive line is even better than the 2021 version, with the running game ripping defenses to shreds, the pass protection has been fine, and there’s no real worry against a Maryland defense that doesn’t get into the backfield enough and hasn’t been a rock against the run.

Yeah, Michigan has been great so far against three very, very, very bad teams, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Michigan hasn’t seen anything like the Maryland offense, but on the other side, Maryland hasn’t dealt with anything like the power that’s about to come from the Michigan ground game.

The Wolverines have been building toward this, building and reworking over the first three games in what amounted to glorified scrimmages. Tagovailoa will be good, and Maryland will have its moments, but the Wolverines will ground and pound their way to a good win.

Maryland vs SMU Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

The Rhett Lashlee era has jumped out to a great start with the passing game working without a problem and the offense as a whole fully tuned up after wins over North Texas and Lamar.

The Terps haven’t faced a passer like Tanner Mordecai yet, they just gave up close to 300 passing yards to Charlotte – granted, it was in desperation mode – and they haven’t faced any sort of stress yet.

Defensively, Maryland has been more than fine, but it has yet to force a takeaway. On the flip side, SMU’s defense has forced five turnovers in the first two games, the defense hasn’t been a problem, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Maryland Will Win

The Terps are about to bomb away.

Yes, the SMU defense has been great so far – the pass D only allowed North Texas and Lamar to combine to hit 43% of their passes – and the offense has rolled at will, but the five turnovers are concerning. Fumbles were an issue against North Texas, and the two picks against Lamar weren’t a plus.

Charlotte might be awful and Buffalo is struggling, but Maryland did what it had to do. The ground game found its groove, the passing attack opened it up last week, and this should be when the SMU defense starts to struggle a bit.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Taulia Tagovailoa is averaging close to 11 yards per attempt – he’s going to stretch the field and push the Mustang secondary.

It’s not all going to be easy. SMU will get its shots in and keep up offensively to make this a full four quarter game, but the Terps will get the two defensive stops needed to get out alive.

Maryland vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

Charlotte has been awful.

The defense couldn’t do anything to slow down Florida Atlantic in a blowout loss in the Week 0 opener, and it was even worse in the ugly 41-24 loss to William & Mary allowing over 300 rushing yards and three scores.

Maryland was able to hit Buffalo with ease through the air for close to 300 passing yards and got a big dash to crank up the rushing production. It wasn’t always smooth, so this is the game to get the offensive line in a lather.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Charlotte Will Win

So what’s going right so far for the 49ers?

The passing game hasn’t been all that bad – even if it hasn’t always been accurate – the defense is generating a little bit of pressure behind the line, and maybe this is the game when the line holds up better.

Again, Maryland had one big run against Buffalo, but other than that the ground attack stalled a bit too much. Charlotte QB Xavier Williams is dangerous on the move – he could get the call if starter Chris Reynolds is still hurt with an arm injury and if James Foster can’t get anything going.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Charlotte defense hasn’t even been close in any phase. The run defense has been bad, the secondary worse, and Maryland should take advantage of all of it on the road.

It might not kick in right away – the 49ers will come up with a strong first quarter – and then the floodgates will open.

Maryland vs Buffalo Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The UB defense has the upside to be much stronger right away, especially on the line.

The Bulls have depth, experience, and the interior pass rushing should be there at times against the Terp ground game. James Patterson is one of the best linebackers Maryland will deal with all season, the secondary got help from the transfer portal, and overall there’s just enough in place to keep the high-powered Terp O from going off.

On the other side, the Bull running game will good enough to control the clock at times, but …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Maryland Will Win

The Maryland offense should strike quickly and with a whole lot of big plays.

It starts with the best offensive line the program has had in years with all five starters back to pave the way for a few tough, quick backs.

Buffalo has to prove its run defense can hold up, but it’ll be the Maryland passing game that will set the tempo. Buffalo might be steady offensively, but it’s not going to bring the downfield passing pop to keep up if the Terps get out to a hot start.

The line will give Taulia Tagovailoa time to work, the NFL-caliber receivers should be able to shine right away, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

The Maryland defense will come up with a good day.

The offense will take center stage, and the defensive front will get shoved around a little too much at times, but overall the D will do a decent job of getting off the field when Buffalo has to come up with big third down throws.

It’ll be a great start for the Terps, Buffalo will push back with a few scores, but there won’t be a whole lot of sweating.

Big Ten Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Big Ten preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

You want the predictions for the 2022 Big Ten football season? It’s not all that hard …

Ohio State is going to be fantastic, and now it’s mad.

We got the Michigan curveball last year. It’s rebuilding, but it’s still going to be strong. Michigan State and Penn State are good, Wisconsin is really good, Iowa is Iowa, and others like Maryland and Nebraska should rise up and have good seasons.

Who can catch the Buckeyes?

More interesting will be a few strange twists and turns. Most of the solid teams can hang with or beat anyone else in the conference, and on the right day an Illinois or Northwestern or Rutgers should have the formula to pull off something fun.

There are two more years before USC and UCLA come aboard. That’s all anyone will be talking about, but until then, this season should be entertaining – at least outside of what OSU will probably do.
