Bank on these 3 March Madness Round 1 upsets

Previewing Round 1 of the 2021 March Madness tournament, with picks and predictions for the best upsets to bet.

The 2021 March Madness NCAA Tournament is back, and the field of 64 tips off Friday afternoon in Indiana. Below, we analyze three Round 1 upsets to target on the odds and lines, with March Madness picks and predictions.

It won’t be the same as previous years, but it’s better than the alternative like we saw last year when the tournament was canceled.

Part of the allure for bettors and casual fans alike is the potential for upsets. While I personally do not fill out brackets, I love to bet the games and I’m always looking to mine those money-line gems.

Let’s start small.

11 Utah State (+155) vs. 6 Texas Tech (Friday at 1:45 p.m. ET)

The Aggies racked up 20 victories this season and they head into the NCAA Tournament with six wins over their past seven outings. They came up just short in a 68-57 loss to San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference Final, but they’re a dangerous team with two wins this season against the Aztecs, a fellow MWC team in the NCAA Tournament.

PLAY: USA TODAY March Madness Bracket Game

What makes the Aggies special is their defense. They allowed just 62.9 points per game to rank 24th in the nation, and they were 18th in defensive field-goal percentage at 39.6. If they have an Achilles’ heel, it’s their inability to prevent the 3-pointer, giving up triples at a 34.4% clip to rank 233rd in the country.

Texas Tech wasn’t a good team from behind the arc, so Utah State won’t need to worry too much about that part of the game from the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech was the national runner-up in 2019, falling in overtime in Minneapolis in the last NCAA Tournament game played as Virginia cut down the nets. This version of the team struggles from the floor and is not a good free-throw shooting team. That makes the Aggies a rather attractive play straight up.

13 Liberty (+280) vs. 4 Oklahoma State (Friday at 6:25 p.m. ET)

It has been a great year for Liberty athletics. The football team enjoyed its first-ever national ranking at one point, and the basketball team is dancing. It could get even better.

The Flames ranked ninth with a 3-point percentage of 38.8 to tie fellow NCAA Tournament combatant Oral Roberts in that department. Liberty enters on a 12-game win streak starting Jan. 16 at Stetson. Liberty picked up victories on a neutral floor against Mississippi State and South Carolina this season, so it won’t be fazed by the big stage.

The Cowboys of Oklahoma State were so-so defending the three, allowing 32.2% from behind the arc to rank 94th. If Liberty starts canning shots from long distance and OSU tries to keep up, that could be a problem, too. They ranked just 179th in the nation during the regular season on 3-point shooting, and they were just 71.1% from the free-throw line. It doesn’t bode well for Oklahoma State in a close game.

14 Colgate (+333) vs. 3 Arkansas (Friday at 12:45 p.m. ET)

Fans “brushing up” on Colgate will discover it shot lights out from behind the 3-point line. OK, no more toothpaste jokes, I promise.

The Raiders were second in the nation with 85.7 PPG, they were 11th in field-goal shooting at 49.8% and they hit 38.4% from behind the 3-point line to rank 17th. They’re also a good free-throw shooting team at 75.2% in case it’s a close one.

Defensively, the Raiders allowed just 67.8 PPG, they were 27th in defensive field-goal percentage and they ranked first in the country in allowing just 26.3% from behind the arc. Not since the days of Adonal Foyle have the Raiders entered the NCAA Tournament with such high expectations, even if they are just a 14-seed.

Arkansas resembles the Nolan Richardson days of “40 Minutes of Hell”, as it can run up and down with the best of them, but they’ll have their work cut out trying to solve a strong Colgate interior defense. If Colgate starts hitting long-distance shots, the Razorbacks could be in for a long afternoon.

March Madness: Appalachian State vs. Norfolk State odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Appalachian State vs. Norfolk State odds and lines, with March Madness Round X picks and predictions.

The Norfolk State Spartans (16-7) take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers (17-11) in a West Region First Four game Thursday night. Tip-off will be at 8:40 p.m. ET at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. Below, we analyze the Norfolk State-Appalachian State odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Norfolk State carries a six-game win streak into its first tournament game since 2012. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion struggles in shooting the ball inside the perimeter, but the Spartans knock down 3-pointers at a hefty 36.8% clip and get to the free-throw line with great frequency. The triples and singles add up: NSU ranked second in MEAC scoring at 75.2 points per game.

Appalachian State turned around a late-season slide to win four straight games in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Mountaineers scored two overtime wins in that tourney. The winner of Thursday’s NSU-ASU game will advance to take on No. 1 Gonzaga Saturday night.

Appalachian State vs. Norfolk State: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Norfolk State 65, Appalachian State 62

Money line (ML)

The Mountaineers have played the tougher schedule this season and they endured a five-game losing streak from Jan. 29-Feb. 23. Since then, ASU has won five of six games; three of those wins were of the OT variety.

The Spartans are much the better 3-point shooting squad and perimeter defense is a blind spot for Appy State. NSU is on a solid momentum swing.

TAKE NORFOLK STATE (+135).

Play our new, free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

NSU is 8-1 ATS since Jan. 30. That includes a six-game ATS win streak.

TAKE NORFOLK STATE +3 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Spartans have played tremendous defense of late in holding opponents to a 37.8% mark from the floor and forcing 17.0 turnovers per game in six games since Feb. 13. Norfolk has come up with a respectable (and improved) 3.7 blocks per game over that same span. The Under is 4-1 on their last five games with a projected total.

Add in Appalachian State’s slow tempo, and there is value to be leveraged on the UNDER 133.5 (-110).

March Madness: Mount St. Mary’s vs. Texas Southern odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Mount St. Mary’s vs. Texas Southern odds and lines, with March Madness Round 1 picks and predictions.

The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (12-10) take on the Texas Southern Tigers (16-8) in the First Four round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday evening. The Mountaineers and Tigers will tip off at 5:10 p.m. ET at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. Below, we analyze the Mount St. Mary’s-Texas Southern odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Mount St. Mary’s advanced to the tournament by winning the Northeast Conference Tournament, and the Mountaineers head into Thursday’s game on a four-game win streak. MSMU sports a solid defense, one that has allowed just 62.3 points per game (17th NCAA-I). The Mountaineers are seeking a program-first NCAA tourney win.

Texas Southern is in the tournament for a fifth time since 2015, but the Tigers are making their first trip under HC Johnny Jones. The champions of the Southwest Athletic Conference play a fast-tempo brand of basketball. The Tigers hit the boards hard on the offensive end, frequently get to the foul line, and average a robust 74.8 points per game.

Mount St. Mary’s vs. Texas Southern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Mount St. Mary’s 70, Texas Southern 65

Money line (ML)

PASS on the flat-footed pick ’em tags. Mount St. Mary’s is a solid play for the outright win, but take the point as an insurance bonus.

Against the spread (ATS)

This is a tortoise-and-the-hare match-up with MSMU (slow) and Texas Southern (fast) being near the far ends of the tempo continuum. The Tigers come out of a fast-pace SWAC and haven’t had much experience against the slowdown game. The Mountaineers have had games against teams that force a lot of possessions, and they’ve fared well in those games.

Look for Mount St. Mary’s rebounding and distance shooting edges to put the Mountaineers over the top.

BACK MOUNT ST. MARY’S +1 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams tote Over trends into this contest. But this tag looks accurate. Peg a slight lean on the Over (133, -110), but that’s about it.

Texas vs. Abilene Christian odds: Longhorns favored in March Madness Round 1

Previewing Saturday’s Texas vs. Abilene Christian odds and lines for their March Madness Round 1 matchup.

The Abilene Christian Wildcats (23-4) take on the Texas Longhorns (19-7) in an NCAA East Region First Round game Saturday night with a 9:50 p.m. ET tip-off at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Below, we look at the early March Madness Round 1 Texas-Abilene Christian odds and lines. Will one of these teams end up as this year’s National Champion? Don’t forget to check out all of the teams’ March Madness odds.

Abilene Christian — the No. 14 seed in the East — won 12 of its last 13 games and enters the national tournament as champions of the Southland Conference. The Wildcat starting lineup features three players under 6-foot-1, but ACU makes up for its lack of size with a tenacious defense.

The Wildcats have held opponents to just 60.5 points per game (seventh NCAA-I). ACU is adept at turning steals into breakaway buckets at the other end.

The Wildcats gave South Region sixth-seeded Texas Tech nearly everything it could handle in a Dec. 9 game in Lubbock, Texas. Abilene Christian led that game by one point with under 10 minutes remaining before falling 51-44.

The third-seeded Longhorns won the Big 12 Tournament after going 11-6 in conference play. Texas has come on lately after enduring some shooting woes in February. UT is 5-0 since March 2; all five games were on the road or on neutral courts. Texas is 5-0 at neutral sites this season.

Texas hasn’t won a first-round game since 2015. Six-foot-10 F Jericho Sims scored 21 points in UT’s last game, a 91-86 win over Oklahoma State. Sims is one of six Longhorns averaging more than 8 points per game.

Texas vs. Abilene Christian: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Texas -450 (bet $450 to win $100) | Abilene Christian +333 (bet $100 to win $333)

Eastern Washington vs. Kansas odds: Jayhawks favored in March Madness Round 1

Previewing Saturday’s Eastern Washington Eagles vs. Kansas Jayhawks odds and lines during their March Madness Round 1 matchup.

The Eastern Washington Eagles (16-7) meet the Kansas Jayhawks (20-8) in an NCAA West Region First Round Game on Saturday afternoon (1:45 p.m. ET) at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.

Below, we look at the early March Madness Round 1 matchup Eastern Washington-Kansas odds and lines. Will one of these teams end up as this year’s National Champion? Don’t forget to check out all of the teams’ March Madness odds.

Eastern Washington — the No. 14 seed in the West Region — won the Big Sky Tournament, holding foes to a 37.8% shooting performance in three games. And the Eagles are a fast-tempo five better known for their offensive prowess. EWU heads into its first NCAA Tournament since 2015 averaging a robust 78.0 points per game.

The Eagles are 13-1 since Jan. 23. Ten of those wins have been by double-digit margins.

PLAY in the USA TODAY Sports’ bracket sweepstakes! Printable brackets. Private groups. Prizes. And mobile users can play USA TODAY Sports’ Couchketball virtual hoops challenge – the interactive basketball game where your skills determine the outcome!

The third-seeded Jayhawks went 12-6 to place second in the Big 12. Kansas struggled in January, going 3-5 over eight games. But the Jayhawks have rallied: they are 9-2 since.

Kansas has been especially sharp on defense in its recent 11-game run. Over that span, the Jayhawks have averaged 61.9 points per game while holding foes to a 38.3% mark from the field. F David McCormack has also been a force during the surge. Since Jan. 28, McCormack has shot 56.9% from the floor while averaging 15.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. However, the 6-foot-10 junior missed the Big 12 tournament due to COVID-19 protocols (Kansas was knocked out of the event with a positive test). His status is key to a prospective run in these brackets.

Arkansas vs. Colgate odds: Razorbacks favored in March Madness Round 1

Previewing Friday’s Colgate Raiders vs. Arkansas Razorbacks odds and lines during their March Madness Round 1 matchup.

The 14-seed Colgate Raiders (14-1) take on the 3-seed Arkansas Razorbacks (22-6) in an NCAA South Region First Round Game Friday, March 1 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The tip-off is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. ET and the game will broadcast on truTV.

Below, we look at the early March Madness Round 1 matchup Colgate-Arkansas odds and lines. Will one of these teams end up as this year’s National Champion? Don’t forget to check out all of the teams’ March Madness odds.

Colgate heads to Indy as champions of the Patriot League. The Raiders didn’t begin their season until Jan. 2. They played Army Jan. 2 and Jan. 3, losing the second of those games; and CU hasn’t lost since.

The Raiders take good care of the basketball while playing a fast tempo. Three-hundred-and-forty-seven teams have played NCAA-I basketball this winter; Colgate has averaged more points per game (86.3) than 345 of them.

Senior guard play leads the way for the Raiders: G Jordan Burns, G Jack Ferguson, and G Nelly Cummings—all seniors—are CU’s top three scorers. Burns is the fifth-leading scorer in the Patriot League (17.0 points per game) and the circuit’s top assist distributor (5.3 per game).

Arkansas is a strong defensive squad despite playing at a top-20 pace. The Razorbacks are 9-1 overall over their last 10 games—with an SEC tourney loss after a nine-game winning streak—and over those 10 games, they’ve held opposing shooters to a 40.4% mark from the field.

The Razorbacks carry a couple of betting trends into the brackets. Arkansas is 8-2 against the spread over its last 10 games. In the team’s last seven games, the Under is 5-2.

LSU vs. St. Bonaventure odds: Tigers favored in March Madness Round 1

Previewing Saturday’s St. Bonaventure Bonnies vs. LSU Tigers odds and lines during their March Madness Round 1 matchup.

The 9-seed St. Bonaventure Bonnies (16-4) tangle with the 8-seed LSU Tigers (18-9) in an NCAA East Region First Round Game on Saturday, March 20. The matinee contest (1:45 p.m. ET) will be held at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana and is airing on TNT.

Below, we look at the early March Madness Round 1 matchup St. Bonaventure-LSU odds and lines. Will one of these teams end up as this year’s National Champion? Don’t forget to check out all of the teams’ March Madness odds.

St. Bonaventure plays a slow-down style of basketball, and the Bonnies figure prominently in defensive efficiency metrics. SBU swept the regular-season and tournament titles in Atlantic 10 play.

In their last seven games, the Bonnies are 6-1 overall and they’ve allowed just 54.9 points per game on a 38.7% mark from the floor over that stretch.

SBU is 4-0 straight-up and 4-0 against the spread this season when playing on a neutral floor. Over the last two seasons, the Bonnies are 7-0 SU and 7-0 ATS in such games.

The Tigers placed third in the SEC regular-season standings and then won a pair of games in the SEC Tournament. LSU enters the national brackets having won four of its last five games. The Baton Rouge Bengals have scored 82.1 points per game (second in the SEC).

LSU plays a fast style of ball, but its offense is also diverse and buoyed by strong shooting percentages from the paint, the perimeter, and the foul line. Notably, the Tigers went 39.4% from three in SEC tourney games against Alabama and Arkansas.

Louisiana State’s top player is freshman G Cameron Thomas. Thomas is the SEC’s leading scorer, at 22.6 PPG. He gets to the line frequently and is an 88.0% free-throw shooter.

Alabama vs. Iona odds: Crimson Tide expected to roll in Round 1

Previewing Saturday’s Iona Gaels vs. Alabama Crimson Tide odds and lines during their March Madness Round 1 matchup.

The 15-seed Iona Gaels (12-5) meet the 2-seed Alabama Crimson Tide (24-6) Saturday, March 20 for a first-round game in the East Regional at the Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET and will be airing on TBS.

Below, we look at the early March Madness Round 1 matchup Iona-Alabama odds and lines. Will one of these teams end up as this year’s National Champion? Don’t forget to check out all of the teams’ March Madness odds.

Legendary head coach Rick Pitino has led the Gaels to the NCAA Tournament, the fifth school he has helped to the Big Dance.

The Gaels needed to win four games in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament, and they did just that, dispatching Quinnipiac, Siena, Niagara and Fairfield in the final while going 3-0-1 ATS during the run.

Iona has won six in a row overall, and they’re 5-0-1 ATS during the span dating back to Feb. 17, their last loss at Quinnipiac. Overall, Iona went 11-5-1 ATS against the spread this season.

The Gaels will be making their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. They fell to North Carolina in the first round in 2019, 88-73. They have lost 13 straight games in the Big Dance since their lone win over Holy Cross in the first round back in 1980.

Alabama topped LSU 80-79 in the SEC Tournament Final and they secured a two-seed as a result. They have won six in a row since its last setback at Arkansas on Feb. 24, and they’re 4-1 ATS across the past five outings.

The Crimson Tide used a combination of high scoring (79.6 PPG) and solid defense (70.3 PPG) to pick up 24 wins, a regular-season conference crown and the league tourney trophy.

They’re also one of the top units defensively against the three, allowing opponents to hit just 29.0 percent from behind the arc, good for 16th in the country.

Alabama has its highest seed since 2002 when they were also a 2-seed. They pushed past scrappy Florida Atlantic in Greenville, S.C. in the first round that season under head coach Mark Gottfried before falling to JUCO transfer Antonio Gates and Kent State in the second round. Yes, THAT Antonio Gates of NFL fame.
