2020 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Chris Robison, Jr. Florida Atlantic
It’s going to be an interesting battle to be the top Conference USA offensive player.

Middle Tennessee’s Asher O’Hare will likely be the league’s biggest all-around statistical star quarterbacks, several running backs will be in the mix for the top honor, and the league is loaded with great receivers.

But watch out for the First Team All-Conference USA quarterback at Florida Atlantic to once again be special.

He completed 62% of his passes for over 3,700 yards with 28 touchdowns and six picks, and he ran for two scores as he led the Owls to the Conference USA title. Now he gets to help was in the transition to the Willie Taggart era.

DE DeAngelo Malone, Sr.
The 6-4, 230-pounder should again be among the nation’s best pass rushers, as well as Conference USA’s best defensive player.

Very experienced, very quick, and with a great closing ability, the NFL-caliber end might not be all that bulky, but he has no problem getting physical with 99 tackles last season with 11.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss. He even returned a fumble for a score.

Expect him to once again be a devastating force behind the line.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Offense 3 Things To Know

– When all of the parts were there – blowing off the late season issue when a few of the parts were suspended for a bit – the offense was terrific. It led Conference USA in third down conversions, was second in the league in total and scoring O, and the attack scoring 41 points or more in six of the last nine regular season games. The two late in the year when it didn’t hit the mark? Those two games with the suspensions.

– The one big question mark will be the offensive line. It wasn’t great in pass protection and was fine for the ground game, but now it has to replace three starters. Coming in, though, is former four-star talent Donavaughn Campbell from LSU to push for one of the guard gigs. Size across the board won’t be a problem for a running game that gets back the main guys.

218-pound Justin Henderson ran for close to 1,100 yards with 14 touchdowns, and quick senior Israel Tucker are both back to ease in the new quarterback situation.

– Who’s replacing J’Mar Smith? Former JUCO transfer Westin Elliott is a big option who’ll make a push, but he threw four picks and no touchdown passes in his limited time last year. Sophomore Aaron Allen returns after serving as a decent backup – he’ll be the odds-on favorite to take over.

Leading receiver Malik Stanley is gone, but the next five producing wide receivers return. 6-3 sophomore Griffin Hebert and former TCU transfer senior Isaiah Graham stretch the field, but there are plenty of other veterans to spread the ball around.

5-7: The Bulldogs are being the Conference USA West 8-ball early on with a loss at Southern Miss. Even with the blowout loss to Marshall last week, Louisiana Tech can take the Conference USA West title with a win over UAB and if Southern Miss loses to WKU. Or, the Bulldogs can take care of this themselves and beat UAB before taking out UTSA next week.

Defending Conference USA champ UAB can still get pull off a division title by beating Louisiana Tech and then North Texas, and getting two Southern Miss losses.

The Blazers overcame their offensive lull – scoring nine points in two games – with a 37-10 wipeout of UTEP. They’re already bowl eligible, but winning out and coming up with a ten-win season would be a remarkable accomplishment.

Here’s the problem – they’ve only been good against the miserable teams.

Louisiana Tech’s offense still doesn’t have suspended starting QB J’Mar Smith or star WR Adrian Hardy, and it won’t have the running game to do enough against a Blazer defense that only allowing three yards per carry.

Tech might have Conference USA’s No. 1 offense, but for the second straight week it’s not going to move well enough to survive.

What’s Going To Happen

Nothing can be decided quite yet in the Conference USA race, but no matter how this turns out, there’s a chance it could be a preview of the championship game.

Louisiana Tech is on an eight-game winning streak including a victory over Southern Miss. If it wins this and Southern Miss loses to UTSA, the Bulldogs can clinch the West next week at UAB.

If they lose, though, and UAB beats UTEP, the division race gets really, really interesting next week.

Marshall has upper-hand in he East with wins over WKU and Florida Atlantic. On a four-game winning streak, it can’t clinch this weekend – FAU is off until next week – but it can be knocking on the door.

Louisiana Tech’s offense has turned unstoppable. There was the “it hasn’t played anyone” problem for most of the year, but it rocked a good USM team, and last week took out North Texas 52-17.

The offensive line is playing at a high level, the defense is fantastic at taking the ball away, and senior QB J’Mar Smith is on a tear, throwing for 210 yards or more in every game with 14 touchdowns and just three picks.

But now he has to deal with the Marshall pass rush and one of the league’s better defenses.

The Herd might not have Tech’s offensive attack, but the secondary has tightened up over the second half of the year allowing just three touchdowns and winning despite a 362-yard passing day from FAU’s Chris Robison and a huge performance from WKU’s Ty Storey.

How is MU getting it done?

Three takeaways saved the day against WKU, and 254 rushing yards got the job done against FAU.

Louisiana Tech hasn’t allowed more than 190 yards rushing against any FBS team, is giving up a mere 3.7 yards per carry, and it’s a +6 in turnover margin over the last three games and have been a +7 overall since the loss to Texas.

At home, the Marshall pass rush will do just enough to bother Smith, and there won’t be the giveaways that the Bulldogs have been living on. Tech won’t go off, but it’ll have just enough offense to pull off the big road win.
