Lions hosted official pre-draft visit for Stephen F Austin EDGE BJ Thompson

The Lions had Thompson for an official visit and also met with him at the Shrine Bowl

In the quest to find the best possible options for the 2023 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions have done some searching at the FCS level. The Lions were one of several teams to have representation at the pro day for Stephen F. Austin.

One of the Jacks’ top prospects is a player the Lions know well. Pass rusher BJ Thompson has already had an official pre-draft visit with the Lions, according to PFN’s Tony Pauline. Detroit also met privately with the 6-foot-5, 243-pound EDGE during Shrine Bowl week in Las Vegas in January, a meeting confirmed by bowl game sources.

Thompson is a potential late-round prospect, a Baylor transfer who turned 26 the day before his pro day at SFA. He played at a much lighter weight during his time in Nacogdoches.

DJ Chark thanks Lions after signing new 1-year deal with the Panthers

DJ Chark thanks Lions after signing a new 1-year deal with the Panthers

Wide receiver DJ Chark showed nothing but love for the Detroit Lions organization after leaving the team as a free agent. Chark sent out a social media “thank you” note to the Lions organization for the fantastic finish to hi one season in Detroit.

Chark signed with the Carolina Panthers on Friday after visiting with that team a week earlier. The details of Chark’s deal reveal a smaller deal than was expected for the speedy veteran when free agency began.

Chark signed for one year and just $5 million with Carolina. The deal is fully guaranteed. Chark will be a free agent once again in 2024.

Nate Sudfeld returns to the Lions at backup QB

The Lions have brought back Nate Sudfeld to back up Jared Goff at QB

The Lions are keeping the same quarterback depth chart from 2022 in place for 2023, at least heading into the NFL draft.

The team announced it has signed Nate Sudfeld back to the roster as a free agent. Sudfeld was the backup behind Jared Goff during the 2022 season. He played in just two games and did not throw a pass.

The 29-year-old Sudfeld joined the Lions after being cut by the San Francisco 49ers in the final roster cutdowns. Detroit waived both Tim Boyle and David Blough and needed an option, and Sudfeld filled the role.

In seven career seasons across several NFL teams, Sudfeld has completed 25 of his 37 pass attempts, throwing one TD and one INT. He last threw a regular-season pass in 2020 for the Eagles.

Brad Holmes attends the Alabama pro day to check out Crimson Tide draft prospects

Alabama has several players worthy of Lions draft consideration

The pro day circuit traveled to Tuscaloosa on Thursday for the Alabama Crimson Tide workouts. One notable attendee for the cavalcade of prospects: Lions GM Brad Holmes.

The Detroit GM doesn’t typically attend pro days. He didn’t make a stop at Ohio State’s event on Wednesday or recent closer-to-home workouts at Michigan or Northwestern, but Holmes did go to Alabama.

There is any number of Crimson Tide prospects that Holmes could prioritize, including two who might very well be gone before the Lions pick at No. 6 — QB Bryce Young and EDGE Will Anderson. Other top Alabama draft prospects include safeties Brian Branch and Jordan Battle, CB Eli Ricks, OL Emil Ekiyor and Thomas Steen and TE Cam Latu.

Lions agree to new deal with OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai

Vaitai now counts $5.01 million against the cap in 2023 and $3.84 million in dead cap in 2024

Big V is safely back in the den. The Detroit Lions reached a new contract agreement with offensive lineman Halapoulivaati Vaitai that will lower his cost and keep Vaitai in Detroit through 2023.

Vaitai was set to earn $9.4 million in base salary in both 2023 and 2024, an expensive legacy of the prior Lions management regime. With the new deal in place, Vaitai will count considerably less against the salary cap this season.

Per Over the Cap, Vaitai’s new contract costs just $3 million in base salary. The Lions gave him a $7.69 million bonus which is spread over 2023 and 2024. The 2024 season is a void year. Vaitai now counts $5.01 million against the cap in 2023 and $3.84 million in dead cap in 2024.

The 29-year-old started at right tackle in 2020 before kicking inside to right guard in 2021, where he performed better than he did outside. Vaitai was slated to be the starting RG in 2022 but a back injury in preseason forced him to miss the entire year. Evan Brown took over and parlayed a solid season into a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks this week.

Detroit brought back Graham Glasgow as a free agent to replace Brown. Vaitai’s new deal means the Lions have some more affordable options at the right guard and reserve OL spots.

Lions bring back Jalen Reeves-Maybin at linebacker

Lions bring back Jalen Reeves-Maybin at linebacker after one year in Houston

Former Detroit Lions linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin is back in the den. The Lions agreed to a free agent contract with the veteran linebacker on Wednesday night.

It’s a return to where it started in the NFL for Reeves-Maybin, who spent his first five seasons with the Lions. He played for the Houston Texans in 2022 and spent most of his time on special teams. Reeves-Maybin did have some starting experience in his first stint in Detroit, notably in his final year of 2021.

Terms of the deal are not yet available.

Chris Spielman has ‘zero agenda other than winning’

Lions special assistant Chris Spielman has “zero agenda other than winning”

Every Lions fan knows Chris Spielman. He’s franchise royalty, from his time as a Pro Bowl linebacker through his current tenure as a special assistant to owner Sheila Hamp.

But what exactly is Spielman’s role in that job title? Justin Rogers of the Detroit News conducted a great, informative interview with Spielman himself to find out. It’s a very worthwhile read.

One thing that stood out was how Spielman operates behind the scenes of pretty much everything the Lions do, but does so in a nonthreatening manner to the people around him.

Here’s what Spielman told Rogers about his goals and ambitions in his unique position,

“I’ve been given the freedom to define the role, but in order to do that, the one thing I had to get, because it’s a paranoid business by nature, I had to make sure I had everybody’s trust, that I have zero agenda other than winning,” he said. “Zero. I tell everyone, ‘I’ve already done my thing, man. I have zero agenda. I don’t want another role. I’m not looking for another role.’ My goal is to help everybody succeed to their highest level. When that happens, I feel like I win.”

For Spielman to embrace the attitude of putting the team over his individual success is another reason why we still see so many No. 54 jerseys around Detroit.

Check out Rogers’ full interview with Spielman at the Detroit News. You’ll be glad you did.

Detroit Lions salary cap update after aggressive free agency moves

The Detroit Lions continue to make one impactful move after another, and with a couple of restructures, the Lions salary cap is looking good.

It has been one busy offseason for the Detroit Lions. More than most of us are accustomed to, especially in recent memory. General Manager Brad Holmes took talent acquisition to a whole level bringing one playmaker after another. What makes these moves so shrewd is, from the naked eye, they did not overpay for any of these acquisitions.

There is a lot to catch up on after our breakdown from the initial free agency wave, so we will go ahead and look at the latest moves the Lions made the past few days.

Holmes came in with a plan to take the Lions biggest weakness this past season, flipped it on its heels, and made it a force to be reckoned with the signing of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. The exact cap details haven’t been released, but the Lions were able to sign him to a reasonable one-year, $8,500,000 deal.

Emmanuel Mosley, C.J. Moore, and Michael Badgley’s contract details were released, with Mosley counting $4,294,118 against the cap, Moore’s cap hit at $1,800,000, and Badgley sitting at $1,092,500 cap hit.

With no position to little, Holmes is bringing competition at long snapper signing veteran Jake McQuaide, who has a cap hit of $1,092,500.

To give the Lions extra wiggle room in the salary cap department, they worked out contract restructures with Romeo Okwara and Jack Fox. Okwara’s was a renegotiation versus a restructure, which freed up nearly $9 million in salary cap space, with a cap hit only at $5,647,059 showing how much he wants to be in Detroit. Fox’s restructure freed up $1.6 million and now only counts $1,965,000 towards the salary cap.

Before all the moves were made, the Lions sat at $18.4 million in cap space, but now they have increased it to nearly $22.4 million, according to Over the Cap. Also, they have increased their effective cap spending from $8.3 million to $14 million, giving them the extra breathing room to make depth signings and sign their rookie class.

The Lions have been very busy this offseason making one impactful move after another. They have brought in players who can contribute immediately while keeping players who played a vital role in the last year’s success while keeping the salary cap very manageable with effective contract negotiations. The Lions have put the league on notice that they are ready to compete with anyone and take the next leap forward to great and continued success.

Lions restructure the contract of P Jack Fox

The Lions restructure the contract of P Jack Fox to free up more cap room for 2023

Get used to seeing Jack Fox as the punter for the Detroit Lions for a long time. After Monday’s contract restructuring with the Lions, Fox is locked up for several years.

The Lions freed up $1.6 million in cap room for 2023 with the restructuring. Fox was due to make $2.12 million in base salary in 2023 as part of his deal last fall which made Fox the highest-paid punter in the NFL. The new adjustment drops that salary to $1.12 million, converting the rest to a signing bonus.

Detroit is now committed to paying Fox just over $2 million in guaranteed salary in 2024. His salary cap number in 2023 drops to $1.97 million, while the ensuing season bump up to $3.975 million in 2024 and 2026 spread around a $3.7 million hit in 2025.

It’s unclear why the Lions were compelled to make such a move. Detroit currently has around $14.05 million in available cap room for 2023 after the restructures of Fox and veteran EDGE Romeo Okwara and the signing of all the free agents, including new safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
