Todd McShay gifts Joe Burrow to Bengals in latest mock draft

A new Todd McShay mock has Joe Burrow going to Cincinnati.

Everyone seems to be in a giving mood this time of year.

Boomer Esiason, for example, gave LSU quarterback Joe Burrow a Cincinnati Bengals helmet.

And now ESPN’s Todd McShay has given Burrow to the Bengals in his latest 2020 mock draft:

“Accuracy, toughness and pocket awareness — the total package. That’s what the Bengals would get with Burrow in their first No. 1 overall pick since Carson Palmer in 2003. Andy Dalton isn’t owed any guaranteed money in 2020 and could be released, and Ryan Finley didn’t look like the long-term answer in his terrible three-game stint as starter. It’s time to get Zac Taylor a quarterback to build around.”

This seems like one of the easiest first-overall picks in years to predict. Burrow just reeled in the Heisman Trophy after one of the most meteoric rises in recent memory as he led the Tigers to an undefeated season while completing 77.9 percent of his passes with 4,715 yards and 48 touchdowns against six interceptions.

Disclaimer — this oh-so-obvious pick at the top of the 2020 draft doesn’t happen if the Bengals don’t hold the first pick. They’re currently slotted to have it but that could change with two games left.

For now, even experts like McShay are in on Burrow to the Bengals.

Titans K Greg Joseph expected to kick vs. Saints, Ryan Succop placed on IR

The Titans and Saints are set to kick off at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday in Nissan Stadium.

The Tennessee Titans released kicker Ryan Santoso on Tuesday, signing Greg Joseph in his place shortly after.

Joseph was signed to a three-year deal with the Titans from the Carolina Panthers practice squad, and was 85% for the Cleveland Browns in 2018.

With the move, the Titans have also placed kicker Ryan Succop on Injured Reserve, per Ian Rapoport.

Succop hasn’t been the same player since making his return from injury earlier in the year, and has made just one of his six field goal attempts in 2019.

His low kick on Sunday’s 24-21 loss to the division rival Houston Texans ultimately proved costly, as the Titans could have potentially had a chance in overtime later in the game if the attempt had been good.

The Titans and Saints are set to kick off at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday in Nissan Stadium.

Stephon Gilmore says he knew both routes on INTs vs. Bengals thanks to film study

Stephon Gilmore explained why he had a big day against the Bengals.

New England Patriots defensive back Stephon Gilmore dominated the Cincinnati Bengals during the Week 15 encounter.

Gilmore picked off two of Andy Dalton’s passes on the day, taking one back for a touchdown. After the game, Bengals coach Zac Taylor rushed to his quarterback’s defense by saying his receivers weren’t aggressive enough.

Interestingly, Gilmore noted perhaps another problem — the turnovers were easy to jump on thanks to film.

Here’s Gilmore, who says he knew the route on both interceptions per NESN’s Zack Cox: “They’ve got to switch the play up because — I wouldn’t say it was easy, but I knew the route.”

This isn’t the first time a Bengals opponent has suggested the attack is predictable enough to take advantage of  — Yannick Ngakoue said something similar earlier this year.

In Taylor’s defnese, there are only so many unique things to draw up midseason while missing so many key contributors. And though he’s said the right things in defense of his quarterback, at least two of Dalton’s interceptions were woefully off target.

Still, as the growing pains continue for this inexperienced Bengals coaching staff, opponents taking advantage of the on-film looks could continue.

AFC playoff picture: Ravens coasting into first-round bye after Week 15

The Baltimore Ravens are fighting for the No. 1 seed, first-round bye and home-field advantage in the postseason in Week 16.

The Baltimore Ravens lead the NFL with their 12-2 record and have stacked the 2020 Pro Bowl roster with their own players. But the ultimate goal is getting into the postseason and going all the way to Super Bowl LIV. Well, the Ravens are well on their way to that goal too.

After beating the New York Jets in Week 15, Baltimore cemented themselves as the AFC North champions. It’s their second-consecutive AFC North crown and guarantees them no worse than the No. 3 seed. But in Week 16, the Ravens can lock up the No. 1 seed, giving them the option of resting in Week 17.

The No. 1 seed would give Baltimore a ton of benefits. For one, they’d get a first-round bye in the postseason, giving them a little extra rest at the end of the season. The Ravens would also host all AFC playoff games and they tend to be a far better team when playing in front of the hometown Baltimore crowd.

For the Ravens to drop down to the No. 3 seed, they’d have to lose both remaining games (against the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers) while both the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots win out. While unlikely to happen, it’s not completely ruled out yet.

Take a look at the AFC playoff picture entering Week 16:

2019 AFC playoff picture:

Seed Team Overall record Conference record
1 Baltimore Ravens 12-2 8-2
2 New England Patriots 11-3 7-3
3 Kansas City Chiefs 10-4 8-3
4 Houston Texans 9-5 8-3
5 Buffalo Bills 10-4 7-3
6 Pittsburgh Steelers 8-6 6-4

If the playoffs started right now, the Ravens would have a first-round bye and then play the lowest remaining seed. That would end up being a rematch with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills or Houston Texans.

Lamar Jackson wins 5th AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors

It’s the fifth time Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has won the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award, tying for the most in a season

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has been having a season to remember. In Week 15, Jackson broke Michael Vick’s single-season rushing record for quarterbacks, while throwing for another five touchdowns. While Jackson was already the frontrunner for the NFL’s MVP award, it’s added to his resume for the season, likely locking him in.

But with the MVP decision coming in a few weeks, Jackson will have to make do with just another AFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

It’s his fifth of the 2019 season, tying Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as the only players to ever have this many in a single season, according to Penn Live’s Aaron Kasinitz. But with two more games remaining (potentially only one for Jackson if the Ravens clinch the No. 1 seed this week), Jackson has a chance to surpass some of the best quarterbacks in NFL history in yet another mark.

Against the New York Jets in Week 15, Jackson went 15-of-23 (65.2%) for 212 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions — equalling a 134.4 passer rating. Jackson also gained 86 yards on eight carries.

Through 14 games, Jackson has completed 66.2% of his passes (ninth), for 2,889 yards, 33 touchdowns (first) and just six interceptions. It’s given him a 112.8 passer rating, which is good for third in the NFL. Jackson has also rushed for 1,103 yards (eighth) and seven more touchdowns (10th) on 159 carries this season, averaging a league-best 6.9 yards-per-carry.

A.J. Green speaks on possibility of franchise tag holdout, commitment

A.J. Green speaks on the franchise tag.

A.J. Green revealed Tuesday that his visit to a foot specialist early in the week went well, noting he’s good to go for offseason training.

Meaning, this season with the Cincinnati Bengals is out.

But what about the long-term?

That’s up for a bevy of debate as Green remains scheduled to be a free agent this offseason. But one likely possibility is the Bengals slap the franchise tag on Green to keep him around on a prove-it sort of deal.

A new report says the Bengals plan on doing just that.

And Green says he wouldn’t like it — but he’d play.

“I have no problem with the franchise (tag). I don’t like it, but I’m not a guy that’s going to sit out the whole year,” Green said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “But at the end of the day, that shows me they’re not committed to me. That’s fine. They have a business they have to run. As the player I have my own business, so if you do that I have to protect myself.”

That seems like an increasingly likely scenario at this point. Green has simply missed too much time over the last few seasons for the Bengals front office to feel 100 percent confident in throwing him a big-money extension over a number of years.

A tag wouldn’t give Green the long-term security he seeks, but he isn’t guaranteed to find that on the market anyway given how his last few seasons have unfolded.

Green would make about $18 million on the franchise tag, which the Bengals would have to assign before the market opens next March. The two parties would then face a mid-July deadline to iron out a long-term pact.

Report: Bengals ready to franchise tag A.J. Green if necessary

A new report says things could get interesting between the Bengals and A.J. Green.

In a not-so-shocking turn, the Cincinnati Bengals will exercise the franchise tag on star wideout A.J. Green if it means keeping him from free agency this offseason.

So says a new report from Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“If the two parties fail to reach an agreement before free agency opens in March, the Bengals are committed to franchise tagging the seven-time Pro Bowler to keep him off the open market, a high-level source told The Enquirer.”

Green had opened up with the media about his injury Tuesday before this report broke, that on the heels of his meeting with a foot specialist Monday.

In short, Green won’t play this year while still working his way back from the injury he suffered on the first day of training camp. It won’t impact his offseason workouts as he gets ready for next season, but troubles with range of motion will keep him off the field for the team’s final two games.

The scope of the situation always implied franchise tag, which Green has said he won’t hold out over. Green wants a long-term pact somewhere but the Bengals — and perhaps other teams — want to see more considering he’s missed a huge chunk of time over the past few seasons.

Think of a tag like a prove-it deal for the veteran who hasn’t been able to escape the injury bug lately. It would extend Green’s time in Cincinnati by at least one season while paying him about $18 million.

NFL Pro Bowl: Geno Atkins is lone Bengals player, others named alternates

Geno Atkins will rep the Bengals at the Pro Bowl.

Geno Atkins is going back to the Pro Bowl.

The NFL announced the star Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle was elected to the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Atkins is in the middle of a down season with just 4.5 sacks so far, but his colleagues and those around the league know better than to leave him out of the fray. He’s the team’s lone selection and the Bengals have now sent someone in nine consecutive seasons.

Elsewhere, Joe Mixon was named a fifth alternate. Returner Brandon Wilson, is a second alternate.

We had earlier outlined the case for Mixon and Wilson to earn Pro Bowl nods. They’ll do so if enough players in front of them on the ballot opt out of the event.

Titans make roster moves, release K Ryan Santoso

The team is expected to add a player to replace Santoso within the next day or so, per the team’s Jim Wyatt.

The Tennessee Titans made roster moves on Tuesday, releasing kicker Ryan Santoso and adding cornerback Kareem Orr to the practice squad.

The team is expected to add a player to replace Santoso within the next day or so, per the team’s Jim Wyatt.

Santoso wasn’t on the roster long, originally signed on November 27, seeing action on kickoffs against the Oakland Raiders, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans.

Orr was waived last weekend as the team promoted defensive lineman Joey Ivie from the practice squad to the team’s active roster.
