Bears QB Justin Fields has the fourth top-selling jersey in the NFL

It’s not a surprise to find Bears rookie QB Justin Fields’ jersey among the top-selling in the NFL.

There’s been a palpable excitement surrounding Justin Fields since the moment the Bears traded up for him in the 2021 NFL draft. Fields’ performance in the preseason only seemed to grow that excitement as we got a glimpse of the quarterback he could become down the line.

While it’ll Andy Dalton getting the start for the Bears in their Week 1 opener against the Rams — as Matt Nagy has refused to stray from his QB plan — that seems to have only fueled the demand for Fields, who we last saw in Chicago’s preseason finale.

So it’s not a surprise that Fields has the fourth top-selling jersey on Fanatics since Aug. 1, where only Buffalo’s Josh Allen, New England’s Mac Jones and Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady are higher than him.

There was even a point earlier this offseason where Fields had three of the top five best-selling jerseys, which included the home jersey, the away jersey and the alternate jersey.

With Nagy determined to follow his QB plan — the same one the Chiefs used with Patrick Mahomes — it could be awhile before Justin Fields becomes the starter. Then again, if the Bears struggle mightily with Dalton under center — which is highly likely given their schedule — we should see Fields sooner rather than later.

7 causes for concern as Bears face the Rams in Week 1

As the Bears prepare for the Rams, there is plenty to be concerned about heading into Sunday night’s game.

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for the start of the 2021 season, where they’re traveling to Los Angeles to face the Rams on Sunday Night Football. Despite the start of a new season, there are already concerns facing this Bears roster, particularly with the uncertainty of this offense and inexperience at the cornerback position.

As the Bears prepare for the Rams, there is plenty to be concerned about heading into Sunday night’s game.

Bears Wire podcast: Previewing Chicago’s Week 1 matchup vs. Rams

On the latest episode of our Bears Wire podcast, we’re previewing the Bears’ Week 1 opener against the Rams.

NFL football is back!

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of the start of the NFL season. Where every team is undefeated and expectations are the highest they’ll likely be for most of the season. Even for those teams that are destined to be watching the postseason from the comfort of their own couch.

The Chicago Bears certainly feel like one of those teams heading into the 2021 season. And yet, there’s an excitement for what this year has in store, which has everything to do with rookie quarterback Justin Fields, who might just be the answer to the quarterback woes in Chicago.

Unfortunately, fans are going to have to wait a little bit to see Fields as it’ll be Andy Dalton getting the start when the Bears travel to Los Angeles to face the Rams on Sunday Night Football.

The Rams are 7.5-point favorites over the Bears, which feels right given the state of both teams. It doesn’t help that Los Angeles is 4-0 in season openers since Sean McVay took over and Matt Nagy could’ve been 0-3 in openers if not for a D’Andre Swift drop in the end zone last season.

As the Bears prepare for their Week 1 opener, host Ryan O’Leary (@RyanO_Leary) and myself (@AlyssaBarbieri) are previewing Bears vs. Rams and sharing our thoughts on Rodney Adams being waived from the roster (given it happened after recording last week’s episode).

Bear Necessities: Alec Ogletree embracing new opportunity in Chicago

Alec Ogletree is taking advantage of his time with Bears, and he has an opportunity to make a strong case for the permanent starting job.

This is our online morning newsletter, Bear Necessities. Subscribe to get the latest Bears news delivered to your mailbox every day.

Everything happens for a reason, including linebacker Alec Ogletree’s rise up the Bears’ depth chart over the last month. When Ogletree signed a one-year deal with the Bears back in August, the team was dealing with injuries to several linebackers in training camp.

While the intent might’ve been to bring Ogletree in as another camp body, it didn’t take long for that plan to be rewritten. Ogletree made an immediate impression, notching six interceptions in four practices and was impressive enough to even push starter Danny Trevathan for playing time.

For all the flack that outside linebacker Robert Quinn gets for his disappointing outing thus far, he’s part of the reason why Ogletree landed with the Bears. Ogletree was visiting his friend and former Rams teammate Quinn in Chicago when he got the call.

“I had been training to be ready to play and hopefully get a call,” Ogletree said. “But when the call came, it definitely came out of the blue.

“It was definitely perfect timing, I guess I would say. Things are aligning properly I feel like for me and my family. I just try to cherish the opportunity to be in this league because I was on the outside looking in, and you see a lot of guys that struggle on the outside, and for me to be able to have a better opportunity to come back into this league and play and do what I love to do, I just try to take it day-by-day and enjoy the moment of being here with the guys and being able to do what I love.”

Whether it was luck or fate that brought Ogletree to the Bears, the important thing is that he’s in Chicago at a time when he’s needed the most. Ogletree will get the start opposite Roquan Smith at least for the next three weeks with Trevathan on injured reserve with a knee injury.

But Ogletree has an opportunity to make an even bigger impression with a strong performance in these first three games, which could earn him the starting job on a more permanent basis.

“I heard this quote one time,” Ogletree said. “Something along the lines of, ‘Luck is when opportunity presents itself and you capitalize on the opportunity.’

“You’re not always going to have the right opportunity to do something, even though you think you should. But when you do have the opportunity, it’s what you do with that opportunity while you’re there. So like I said, I just tried to take it day-by-day, didn’t want to hold anything back. Just tried to come out and be me and capitalize on the opportunity that the Bears gave me.”

Chicago Bears unveil 2021 uniform schedule

The Bears have released their uniform schedule for the 2021 season, which will feature four different uniform combinations.

As the Chicago Bears prepare to take the field against the Los Angeles to open the regular season, there’s a lot of excitement with the start of the new season.

Something that should help make the wait until Sunday’s game a little easier is the unveiling of the Bears’ uniform schedule. The Bears officially announced the schedule for uniform combinations for their home and away schedule this fall.

Chicago will wear their white jerseys in just six of nine away games, starting in Week 5 against the Raiders.

For their eight home games, the Bears will wear three different uniform combinations. Chicago will wear their traditional navy jerseys in Week 2 against the Bengals, Week 4 against the Lions, Week 8 against the 49ers, Week 11 against the Ravens and Week 17 against the Giants.

The Bears will don their classic white jerseys, which were unveiled for team’s centennial celebration a couple of years ago, twice — both against divisional foes. Chicago will first wear them against the Packers in Week 6 and then against the Vikings in Week 15.

They’ll also wear their alternate orange jersey when they host the Cardinals in Week 13.

In all, the Bears will wear four different uniform combinations throughout the 2021 season.

Here’s a look at the complete uniform schedule:

Watch the moment Jesper Horsted and Caleb Johnson learn they’ve made Bears’ 53-man roster

We dare you not to smile watching Jesper Horsted and Caleb Johnson learn they’ve made the Bears’ 53-man roster.

The NFL’s final roster cut day can be a grueling process for players, when teams trim their roster from 80 to 53 players. Usually, when players are called into a meeting with the general manager and head coach, it’s to tell them they’re being let go.

But in the latest episode of 1920 Football Drive, the Bears’ behind-the-scenes series that’s taken fans inside training camp, general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy wanted to highlight the good that comes with building the 53-man roster.

There were a couple of roster-bubble players who made the cut in tight end Jesper Horsted and linebacker Caleb Johnson — both of whom impressed during preseason — and Pace and Nagy wanted to deliver the news personally. And it was amazing.

Watch both Horsted and Johnson learn they’ve achieved their goal of making the 53-man roster and we dare you not to smile.

Here’s a look at the Bears’ injury report from Thursday’s practice, where NT Eddie Goldman missed his second straight practice.

The Chicago Bears released their second injury report ahead of Sunday’s season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, where nose tackle Eddie Goldman missed practice for the second straight day with a knee injury. Matt Nagy called Goldman day-to-day after he tweaked his knee during Monday’s practice.

Elsewhere, Nagy isn’t worried about players like wide receiver Darnell Mooney and outside linebackers Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn, who were limited for a second straight day.
