Bear Necessities: Tarik Cohen wants Chicago to get Justin Fields more weapons

Former Bears RB Tarik Cohen wants the team to get Justin Fields some help this offseason.

This is our online morning newsletter, Bear Necessities. Subscribe to get the latest Bears news delivered to your mailbox every day.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields has been wowing everyone around the league with his impressive play despite a lack of help around him.

Former Bears running back Tarik Cohen is among them, speaking with The 3-Point Conversion, marveling at Fields’ superstar potential while also speaking for the fans when he says the team needs to get him some help this offseason.

“I just wish they would get some more weapons around him, man,” Cohen said. “Like some big names. Either out of the draft or free agency or something. He’s a crazy talented player. My last year when I was there rehabbing I got to watch him. The throws he made in practice, he really has an arm.”

Chicago will certainly have the resources to build around Fields this offseason. That includes north of $120 million in salary cap space along with eight draft picks, including a projected top-two selection (where they can land a generational defensive talent or trade back and acquire more draft capital).

Bears GM Ryan Poles has a slew of roster needs to address this offseason, especially on offense at wide receiver and offensive line. With Fields impressing despite a solid supporting cast, imagine what he could look like with other talent in place.

The Chicago Bears (3-12) will face the Detroit Lions (7-8) on Sunday, where Chicago is looking to pull out a win on New Year’s Day.

After a 35-13 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Bears will face a pair of divisional opponents to close out the 2022 season. But they’ll be facing a Lions team with a lot more on the line than draft positioning. Detroit is fighting for a wild card spot, and they’ll need to beat Chicago to keep that hope alive.

Before the game, we caught up with managing editor Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire to get the scoop on the Bears’ Week 17 opponent.

Here are six questions with Lions Wire:

Full 7-round Bears 2023 mock draft: New Year’s edition!

With 2022 drawing to a close, we put together a New Year’s-inspired Bears mock draft addressing some key needs.

The Bears 2022 season isn’t over yet, but as the new year approaches, it’s time to look ahead to the 2023 NFL draft.

Chicago has plenty of roster holes and luckily has eight picks (perhaps nine with a projected compensatory seventh-round pick), giving them plenty of opportunity to fill gaps with young, cheap players, making them highly valuable.

In preparation for the upcoming draft, we put together a seven-round mock draft. In this version, the Bears draft a generational talent with the No. 2 pick that isn’t named Will Anderson Jr.. In addition, they continue to fill gaps at OL, WR, LB, CB, RB, and EDGE.

20 most memorable moments that defined the Bears in 2022

From a regime change in January to trades in October, here are the 20 moments that defined the Bears in 2022.

But while the Bears entered into a rebuild in 2022, they also saw the growth of quarterback Justin Fields, who became one of the most electric players in the league.

From free agency drama to training camp holdouts, here are the 20 moments that defined the Bears in chronological order.
