2021 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Dustin Crum, Sr. Kent State

Really? The Kent State starting quarterback is getting interest from the NFL world? Yup, and that’s because 6-3, 207-pound guys who can run a fast-paced offense and can move work at the next level.

Phenomenal at the end of the 2019 season as he led the team to comeback wins and a bowl victory, he was brilliant last year hitting 74% of his throws with 12 touchdowns and two picks – to go along with 240 rushing yards and four scores – in just four games. Now he should take the FlashFast style of O to another level.

2021 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

DE Troy Hairston, Sr. Central Michigan

The MAC is full of big-time pass rushers and excellent defensive linemen who’ll put up big stats and huge plays. The best of the returning lot is a 5-11, 245-pound undersized end and oversized linebacker who’ll once again play in a hybrid role to make a whole lot of big things happen.

He was okay as a junior, but last year he took off with 42 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss in just six games. It’s going to keep on rolling on a veteran D.

Kent State Golden Flashes College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The FlashFast style of offense under head coach Sean Lewis kept on rolling. The Golden Flashes led the nation in total offense averaging 607 yards per game, were No. 1 in scoring offense with 50 points per outing, and finished second in the nation in passing efficiency. Leading receiver Isaiah McKoy is gone, but everyone else is expected back, and …

Syracuse transfer Nykeim Johnson comes in after catching 88 passes in his Orange career, and all of the other top Kent State targets return starting with deep threat Ja’Shaun Poke and speedy veteran Isaac Vance. Best of all, they have their main man throwing to them.

Dustin Crum has turned into a high-octane passer – hitting 74% of his throws last season – to go along with his rushing ability. If he’s not the best player in the MAC, he’s close. It’s his job, so backup and former starter Woody Barrett is transferring.

The running game was outstanding. It finished third in the nation averaging 283 yards per game with four different players hitting the 200-yard mark in the four game season. All three of the top backs return – led by 5-6, 184-pound lightning-quick sophomore Marquez Cooper, who had a team-high five scores – and Crum is in that mix of 200-yard rushers.

Helped by the up-tempo style, the offensive line was great in pass protection and outstanding for the ground game. All five starters return around All-MAC OT Bill Kuduk and senior OG Nathan Monnin forming a solid right side.

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the MAC teams.

[jwplayer 6b512Mhi]

2021 MAC Rankings: Pre-Spring

MAC East

1. Kent State Golden Flashes

Why To Be Happy: Sean Lewis is still the head coach. He’s a strong young talent who’s overdue for a next step up job, but he’s around, as is QB Dustin Crum, who’s back for his senior-plus year. All five starters are expected back on the O line, just enough is back on defense to be okay, and landing S Antwaine Richardson from Maryland and WR Nykeim Johnson from Syracuse is huge.

What To Work On: Matthew Trickett was one of the best kickers in 2019 and was fine in his limited work last year. Now he’s at Minnesota, and good backup QB Woody Barrett is in the transfer portal. The D has to be a whole lot better despite losing a few key parts.

Bottom Line: It’ll be a good fight to be at the top of the MAC East, but the Golden Flashes should have too much offense to not make a run to the MAC Championship game.

2. Buffalo Bulls

Why To Be Happy: The team caught a break when RB Kevin Marks apparently decided to come back. He might not put up Jaret Patterson numbers, but he’s All-MAC good. At least seven starters are expected back on defense, and the quarterbacks are in place to be fine, but …

What To Work On: The team has to replace enough talent to be a problem. The O line needs some reworking, the receiving corps has to find parts, TE Zac Lefebvre took off for WKU, and DE Malcolm Koonce is one of the key defensive stars who’s done.

Bottom Line: This is likely going to be a weaker version of the team that should’ve won last year’s MAC title, but it’s still going to be one of the stars in the East if the O line comes together fast.

3. Ohio Bobcats

Why To Be Happy: Thanks to the return of a De’Montre Tuggle for his senior-plus season, the offensive backfield should be terrific. A few of the receivers are gone, and the line has to do some reshuffling, but the defense that was so young at so many parts should be a bit tighter.

What To Work On: Overall, the pass rush has to be a whole lot stronger, the defense has to be more disruptive, and the passing game has to be more dangerous. That’s a lot to fix, but they’re more tweaks than total overhauls.

Bottom Line: Ohio was supposed to be a whole lot better last year, but it should be a player in the MAC East race as long as the defensive line can start making more things happen in the backfield.

4. Miami University RedHawks

Why To Be Happy: The defensive front seven/six should be strong enough with the returning parts to be among the best in the MAC. QB Brett Gabbert is back along with a slew of decent receivers, and there’s a massive get from the transfer portal with Northwestern’s Isaiah Bowser coming in.

What To Work On: The O line needs new starts. Left tackle Tommy Doyle was a senior who’s now off to try out the NFL, and C Danny Godlevske is not an Oklahoma State Cowboy.

Bottom Line: There’s enough defensively to be terrific with a little time, and the offensive backfield will be good enough to shine if the line can quickly replace Doyle and Godlevske.

5. Akron Zips

Why To Be Happy: The Zips get back just about everyone on offense after going really, really young over the last few years, and the defense is almost all back full, too. There hasn’t been a whole lot coming in from the transfer portal – Michigan State RB Anthony Williams should play a role – but the veterans are there to improve.

What To Work On: Akron has to be better on the lines. The defensive front has to start making things happen in the backfield, and the offense needs to be far, far better in pass protection.

Bottom Line: It has been a brutal run over the last few years, but after two rough seasons under Tom Arth, at least the experience is there to potentially make a little bit of noise.

6. Bowling Green Falcons

Why To Be Happy: The offense should be a bit better. Syracuse transfer Drew Gunther is another option at quarterback, Andrew Clair is a veteran back, and this is when all the young receivers should step up. The D won’t be a brick wall, but it’ll be among the most experienced in the MAC.

What To Work On: The passing game has to work. That’s the whole reason for Scot Loeffler to be the head coach – the O is supposed to rock. It has taken a while, but as long as the turnovers slow down, the team will be a whole lot better.

Bottom Line: Baby steps need to be leaps. It’s the third year under Loeffler and this is when the rebuild needs to be complete. The team needs something it can rely on.

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flash offense has been phenomenal.

Okay, so it helps to play Bowling Green and Akron – after starting the season with Eastern Michigan – but this is Kent State. It’s a program that struggled to  do anything offensively not all that long ago, and now it leads the nation in scoring and total offense.

Kent State. In 2017, the team put up 153 points for the entire 12-game season.

The FlashFast style scores in bunches, the team is playing with the highest possible level of confidence, and the ground game is ripping through everything. Buffalo has an offense, too, but its defense isn’t getting into the backfield and it’s been just okay against the run.

However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Buffalo Will Win

Buffalo ain’t Akron or Bowling Green.

The run defense hasn’t been a rock, but it hasn’t needed to be with the way the offense is ripping through everyone at will. Kevin Marks is averaging over six yards per carry with 231 yards in the first three games, and he’s not even the star of the show. Jaret Patterson is coming off a 301-yard day against Bowling Green, he’s averaging over seven yards per carry and scored eight times.

The UB offensive line is dominating. It has yet to allow a sack, and it has given up just three tackles for loss.

The Kent State run defense was hit by Bowling Green for 260 yards, and allowed 212 last week against Akron. UB is going to keep hitting with the 1-2 punch, and …

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Kent State 30, Buffalo 27. It was one of the wildest, craziest, best finishes of the 2019 season when Kent State stormed back and changed the entire program around with a shocking win over the Bulls.

The Golden Flashes went form a three-game losing streak and being knocked out of bowl contention to winning seven in a row with the program’s first bowl victory ever. They also knocked out Buffalo from a MAC championship appearance.

Buffalo will be well motivated, and it’ll win the battle of the running games in a fun firefight.

Kent State (2-0) vs Akron (0-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Akron Will Win

The defense wasn’t all that bad against a good Ohio team last week.

It’s a bit about baby steps when it comes to a Zip program that needs to keep finding things that work. The D has been okay on third downs, the offensive line isn’t allowing a ton of plays behind the line, and freshman QB Zach Gibson is promising, hitting 18-of-30 passes in each of his first two games with a few big plays last week.

The defensive front is allowing 5.6 yards per carry and 200 rushing yards per game, but the pass defense locked down against the Bobcats. The Kent State O line will give up plays in the backfield.

Why Kent State Will Win

Akron doesn’t score.

It’s on a 19-game losing streak and hasn’t scored more than 17 points in any of the last nine games. On the flip side, the Kent State FlashFast-style attack is operating at peak efficiency, coming up with over 200 yards rushing and receiving in the first two games.

The offense leads the MAC, but the defense is creating problems, too, doing a fantastic job of getting to the quarterback and creating a whole slew of negative plays.

What’s Going To Happen

How crazy is it that Kent State is interesting? It wasn’t all that long ago that the 2018 Golden Flashes went 2-10, and now it’s 2-0.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the 2017 team scored 153 points in a 12-game season and scored 115 points in the 11 games against FCS teams, and now it scored 89 points in two games.

The Golden Flashes lost four straight to Akron before last year’s 26-3 win, and now it’ll be two straight. Head coach Sean Lewis and his offense will put this away almost instantly.
