2022 WR Cole Prusia, No. 6 player in Oregon, commits to Dan Lanning and the Ducks

Add another player to the 2022 class. Cole Prusia, the No. 6 player in the state of Oregon, announced his commitment to the Ducks.

[jwplayer SnGW9tpX]

The Oregon Ducks added a nice piece to their 2022 recruiting class on Monday morning, with 3-star wide receiver Cole Prusia announcing that he would be staying home and attending the University of Oregon in the fall.

Prusia, who stands at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, played high school ball in Tualatin.

According to 247Sports, Prusia is ranked as the 6th-best player in the state of Oregon for the 2022 class. He is currently the No. 152 WR in the nation, and the No. 1082 player overall.

As a junior in high school, Prusia was named Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year, hauling in 31 receptions for 554 yards and nine touchdowns with an additional nine pass break-ups and three interceptions on defense.

He will now join the Ducks this year and be the second in-state receiver in this recruiting class, joining Lake Oswego native Justius Lowe.

Former Oregon football players file suit against UO, Willie Taggart, NCAA, seeking $125.5 million

The lawsuit against the NCAA, UO, and Willie Taggart filed by two former Oregon players is now seeing $125.5 million for pain and suffering, according to a new report.

[jwplayer SnGW9tpX]

You may remember a few years ago when there was a medical scandal inside the Oregon Ducks football program that left a pair of players hospitalized in 2017 after reported strenuous offseason workouts resulted in rhabdomyolysis and other injuries.

Those players, Doug Brenner and Sam Poutasi, are now reportedly seeking $100 million in damages from the NCAA as well as a subsequent $25.5 million in damages for pain and suffering from the NCAA, the University of Oregon, and former Oregon Ducks’ head coach Willie Taggart, who was at the head of the program at the time.

[lawrence-related id=22436]

The first report of this came from ESPN’s Heather Dinich on Sunday.

While the trial is not new but was filed back in 2019, it is back in the news after Brenner added $100 million damages claims to the lawsuit. Brenner alleges in the lawsuit he sustained lifelong injuries during a series of controversial workouts in 2017.

Along with Taggart, former Oregon strength coach Irele Oderinde is named in the lawsuit as well.

“The lawsuit alleges negligence against all defendants, accusing Taggart and Oderinde of imposing physical punishment on the players, failing to prohibit it, and failing to ensure that Oderinde had adequate training to do his job,” Denich wrote on ESPN. “According to the lawsuit, Oderinde did not carry industry-required certification to be a strength and conditioning coach at Oregon.”

The trial is scheduled to start on Tuesday in Eugene, and according to the ESPN report, both Taggart and Oderinde are expected to be there in person.

Oregon RB Sean Dollars is ‘competing on another level’ in Ducks’ spring practices

Not long ago, Sean Dollars was considering a transfer from Oregon. Now he’s making a strong case to be the RB1 for the Ducks.

[jwplayer aKMTk5CG]

It seems like just yesterday that Sean Dollars announced he would transfer from the Oregon football program.

Then again, a lot has happened since then.

After a conversation with Dan Lanning, Dollars decided to stay. Now he’s in strong contention to become Oregon’s starting tailback in 2022, battling alongside Byron Cardwell Jr. According to the new head coach, Dollars is quickly growing into the position and taking advantage of the actual coaching the staff provides the players.

[lawrence-related id=22441]

“I feel like Sean’s taking it up another notch and really competing on another level. I think he’s really embracing the coaching, and I’ve loved seeing that firsthand for him, his response,” Lanning said. “One thing we’re asking every one of our players right now is how do you respond to coaching? Sean has done a good job of that in the last few practices.”

With CJ Verdell going on to the NFL and Travis Dye transferring to USC, all expectations were that Byron Cardwell was going to take over the RB1 spot after his impressive debut season with the Ducks. However, an impressive spring season has seen Dollars throw his hat into the ring.

He’s not alone in that competition, though. Transfer Noah Whittington from Western Kentucky is also making a big push for carries. Lanning said Whittington already knows what it takes to be a consistent runner. It’s called effort.

[lawrence-related id=22395]

“Noah Whittington runs extremely hard. I think he’s a guy that has great vision at back,” Lanning said. “But he just plays with another level of effort. Which to me, if you can play with effort, we can coach the rest.”

Whittington rushed for 617 yards and two touchdowns while catching 12 passes for 58 yards in 2021. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry.

With Dollars, Whittington and Cardwell, Oregon should be just fine running the ball in 2022.

5-star Richard Young, No. 2 RB in 2023, class includes Oregon Ducks in top-7

Richard Young is the No. 2 RB in the 2023 class. He will be in Eugene for the Ducks’ spring game on April 23rd.

[jwplayer aKMTk5CG]

The Oregon Ducks are in a good position to potentially land a commitment from 5-star running back Richard Young, who is among the best players at his position in the 2023 class.

Young, who is ranked as the No. 2 RB in the nation, and No. 19 player overall according to 247Sports, announced his top-7 on Sunday afternoon, including the Ducks alongside schools like Texas A&M, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Florida.

[lawrence-related id=20708]

While Young is obviously impressed with Oregon early in his recruitment, that love for the Ducks has a chance to grow even stronger, as the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Florida product is scheduled to be in Eugene for Oregon’s Spring Game on April 23rd. If he experiences the atmosphere at Autzen Stadium, something Dan Lanning has stressed is of the utmost importance for prospective recruits, we could see the Ducks become one of the front-runners to land this elite recruit.

Former Oregon QB assesses Ty Thompson’s talent, Bo Nix’s experience and Ducks’ QB competition

Nate Costa played at Oregon and helped coach Ty Thompson last year. He has some thoughts on the decision to bring in transfer QB Bo Nix.

[jwplayer aKMTk5CG]

When the 2021 season came to an end, it started to feel like a new era of Oregon football was coming. Dan Lanning had just been hired, a new coaching staff was on the way, and it was time for true freshman quarterback Ty Thompson to take the reins and start his career as the leader of the team.

Then the Ducks went out and landed transfer QB Bo Nix, an experienced veteran from the Auburn Tigers.

[lawrence-related id=22376]

Though the move makes sense for the complete success of the team in 2022, there are ways it can be viewed as a shot at Thompson and fellow QB Jay Butterfield, potentially indicating they aren’t ready yet. Former Oregon offensive analyst and QB Nate Costa recently talked about that with John Canzano on his radio show.

“They essentially shot a round across the bow of every quarterback in that quarterback room,” Costa said.

While Thompson is the highest-rated QB recruit to ever sign with the Ducks, Costa still has some concerns about the rocket-armed redshirt freshman and his ability to adjust to the speed of the game in the Pac-12.

“He played at a smaller level in high school in Arizona,” Costa said. “Adjusting to the speed of Pac-12 football is an adjustment for anyone and he’s still working on that.”

Is that enough to keep him from being under center for the Ducks in Week 1? Right now he’s battling with Butterfield and Nix, who coach Dan Lanning brought in shortly after taking over the program from Mario Cristobal in December.

[lawrence-related id=22395]

“Bo has seen those things,” Costa continued. “He’s seen it at the SEC level and has a better feel for the speed-of-the-game challenges. It doesn’t mean Bo is going to be the guy, but it’s a slight advantage for Bo Nix.”

While Costa believes Brown was the right choice to start for the Ducks last year, and thinks Nix may have a leg up in 2022, that doesn’t mean he isn’t a believer in Thompson’s potential to lead this team in Eugene.

In fact, Costa was extremely complimentary of Thompson’s arm strength, going as far as to say he has “one of the biggest arms I’ve ever seen in a quarterback.”

“I used to do a thing with the QBs at Oregon where I put them on a radar gun like an MLB prospect,” Costa said. “It gives you a general understanding of arm strength. He was putting the football above 60 mph. If you look at the NFL combine numbers that’s an elite number. For a kid that is 18-19 years old to be able to generate that kind of velocity is impressive.”

Nix and Thompson will be a very hotly contested battle leading up to Oregon’s season opener against Georgia on Sept. 3.

Former Oregon coach: Ducks were close to benching Anthony Brown for Ty Thompson numerous times

A lot of Oregon fans wanted Ty Thompson to replace Anthony Brown at QB last season. Nate Costa said they had several conversations about making the move.

[jwplayer IaX5atWr]

Looking back on the 2021 Oregon football season, it’s easy to identify many highs and lows.

The biggest high, obviously, was the Week 2 road victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes, putting the Ducks on the map nationally and propelling them to a No. 3 ranking in the nation.

However, the down moments included the road loss to Stanford and the pair of losses at the hands of Utah at the end of the season. Of course, the cherry on top of it all was the loss of coach Mario Cristobal, who left after the season to take the head coaching job with the Miami Hurricanes.

[lawrence-related id=22395]

Now that the old coaching staff has largely moved on to new positions, we are starting to hear a bit about the inner workings in Eugene over the past couple of years. Most recently, former offensive analyst and Oregon quarterback Nate Costa talked with John Canzano about a number of things, including the situation at quarterback.

If you’ll remember, the Ducks started QB Anthony Brown, but after some up-and-down play, much of the fan base called for true freshman Ty Thompson to start instead. Costa said the coaching staff discussed making a move several times throughout the year.

“We had those conversations. We had them early on. We had them midseason. We had an extensive one at halftime of the bowl game against Oklahoma,” Costa said. “We almost made a move (at halftime).”

With the Ducks down 30-3 at the half of the Alamo Bowl — a glorified exhibition game that was played between two teams with interim coaching staff — Oregon fans wanted Thompson to get some game reps in the second half and find out what he could do after not seeing him much throughout the season. The Ducks kept Brown in the game, though, and went on to lose 47-32.

“I think Anthony did just enough — just enough — to hold onto that position,” Costa said. “He won us a lot of football games. The quarterback standard at Oregon is very high. It’s a high bar for a guy to try and reach. I don’t think Anthony reached it on a daily basis, and the fan base let him hear it from time to time.”

Brown moved on from the program and is working to play at the next level, while Thompson is in yet another quarterback battle, this time with transfer Bo Nix. Early this spring, he looks like he has improved over the offseason and all indications are that the competition will be tight down the stretch.

In hindsight, though, it sure would have been nice to see what the true freshman could do in some live-action situations a year ago when the stakes were relatively low. Now, should he win the QB competition against Nix, his first start would come against the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs in Week 1.

There is still a long way to go in the process of deciding who will be Oregon’s starter for the fall, and Thompson seems to have a great shot. Had the coaching staff decided to put him in the game a few times last year, we’d have a better idea of where he is, though, and there might not have been a need for a QB competition in Eugene this offseason.

Oregon cornerback Dontae Manning suffers apparent lower-body injury in Ducks’ scrimmage

Dontae Manning left Oregon’s scrimmage with an apparent lower-body injury on Saturday. The extent of the injury is currently unknown.

[jwplayer aKMTk5CG]

The Oregon Ducks held their first spring scrimmage inside Autzen Stadium on Saturday morning. While there were many positives, one concerning development came when cornerback Dontae Manning left in a wheelchair with an apparent lower-body injury.

Manning is a third-year sophomore that was in a position to compete for a starting CB spot on the defense this offseason. He has been working with the first-team defense during the spring.

[lawrence-related id=22376]

We don’t know the extent of the injury, and head coach Dan Lanning was unable to elaborate after the scrimmage.

“I’ll have to wait and see what happened,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “He got dinged up. I really can’t speak on it yet because I’m obviously just leaving the practice field.”

After recording 18 tackles with one for loss and a pass breakup last season, there was an expectation and hope that Manning, a former five-star recruit, would take a step up on Oregon’s defense and help replace Mykael Wright as the No. 1 corner in the secondary. So far, we have seen him frequently working opposite transfer Christian Gonzalez and project he will be among the more important pieces of the secondary.

We will continue to monitor this injury and provide updates as soon as more information is known.

WATCH: Dan Lanning, coaching staff celebrate Josh Conerly commitment

The celebration says it all. You can see how excited Oregon’s coaching staff was to land Josh Conerly on Friday.

[jwplayer AbRbziH1]

Sometimes it’s nice to know that your team’s head coach has similar reactions to the fan base.

On Friday night after 5-star OT Josh Conerly announced his commitment to the Oregon Ducks, which came as a surprise to many, the Ducks’ fan base went wild with jubilation and celebration. A new video that is circulating on social media shows that the Oregon coaching staff, with Lanning and OL coach Adrian Klemm front and center, also had a passionate celebration after the announcement as well.

[lawrence-related id=22358]

Once Conerly put on the Oregon hat and committed to the Ducks, all of the coaches let it be known how big a deal it was.

For fans, a lot of the excitement was due to the fact that there didn’t seem to be a great chance Conerly would choose the Ducks, with the belief being that he would land with the USC Trojans. Looking at the coaches’ reactions, it seems as if they were finding out for the first time as Conerly announced as well.

Whether Lanning knew before the announcement on TV or not doesn’t matter. What matters is that the Ducks just got the highest-rated OL commit in program history, and you can see how much the coaching staff cares about the victory in the recruiting game.

Hopefully there are many more to come down the road.

Breaking: 5-star OT Josh Conerly commits to Oregon Ducks, spurning USC Trojans

Josh Conerly to Oregon. Flipped from USC Trojans late. Massive win for Dan Lanning over Lincoln Riley once again.

[jwplayer aKMTk5CG]

It certainly wasn’t predicted to happen, but the Oregon Ducks scored a massive win over the USC Trojans on Friday night with the surprising flip of 5-star offensive tackle Josh Conerly.

Conerly, who was predicted by many to commit to the Trojans, instead announced that he would be joining Dan Lanning and the Ducks, staying a little bit closer to his home of Seattle next year.

[lawrence-related id=22235]

Conerly came into the day as the highest-ranked unsigned player left in the 2022 class, and with his addition, Oregon’s once 24th-ranked recruiting class now sits at No. 16 in the nation, per 247Sports, sitting just behind the Miami Hurricanes.

The commitment of Conerly comes as such a surprise because many crystal ball projections had him as a near-lock to land in Los Angeles. However, the 5-star OT who ranks as the No. 15 overall player in the class took a last-minute trip to Eugene this past weekend and was apparently swayed enough by Lanning and OL coach Adrien Klemm to change his decision.

[lawrence-related id=22234]

This is the second huge recruiting win over Lincoln Riley and the Trojans for Lanning, who also scored the commitment of 4-star cornerback Jahlil Florence earlier this year. Florence is a San Diego native who was strongly considering USC after Mario Cristobal left for Miami, but Lanning convinced him to come up to Eugene anyway.
