Statement from Jets owner Woody Johnson on Robert Saleh’s firing

Statement from Jets owner Woody Johnson on Robert Saleh’s firing

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has broken his silence.

The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh following a 2-3 start to the 2024 NFL season. In his tenure, Saleh notched a 20-36 overall record as the team’s bench boss.

Saleh’s firing came as a shock considering the team’s record, it only being five games into the season and losing by close calls in each of their past two outings.

Most recently, New York lost to the Minnesota Vikings, 23-17, out in London in Week 5.

Following the team’s decision, Johnson released this statement:

Report: Robert Saleh’s reaction to being fired by the Jets

Robert Saleh did not see it coming, according to a report.

The New York Jets, off to a 2-3 start to the 2024 NFL season, have fired their head coach. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been named the interim head coach.

Per FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, Saleh was “blindsided” by the decision by owner Woody Johnson to fire him. The report adds that Saleh was “disappointed” he did not get a chance to turn things around.

Glazer indicated he personally spoke to Saleh:

Saleh was hired in 2021. He had a 20-36 overall record. The decision from the front office comes amid apparent disagreements between the coach and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

In a separate report, NFL Network’s Peter Schrager has updated that the conversation was not just between Woody Johnson and Saleh, as it was noted that Christopher Johnson was in attendance as well. Reportedly, general manager Joe Douglas was not in the meeting.

Schrager also stated: “Robert Saleh came to work today thinking he was preparing for the Buffalo Bills. He was given no indication he would be losing his job.”

In Week 6, the Jets will host the Bills (3-2) in their next contest on “Monday Night Football.”

Jeff Ulbrich named New York Jets interim head coach

Jeff Ulbrich named New York Jets interim head coach

The Robert Saleh era with the New York Jets is over.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New York Jets have fired their head coach.

But someone has to do the job now… and it’s going to be Jeff Ulbrich.

Per Schefter, the defensive coordinator has been handed the interim head coach position:

Ulbrich, 47, joined the Jets in 2021 when Saleh took over as the team’s head coach. Prior to that, he was the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Under Ulbrich’s watch alongside Saleh, New York’s defense ranked last in the NFL in yards allowed per game in his first season with the team. However, the unit rebounded to finish fourth and third in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The Jets currently rank second (255.8 YPG).

Prior to his coaching career, Ulbrich played 10 seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers from 2000 to 2009. The Niners selected him in the third round of the 2000 NFL draft out of Hawaii.

In 2010, Ulbrich’s coaching career began as a special teams assistant with the Seattle Seahawks.

New York Jets fire head coach Robert Saleh

New York Jets fire head coach Robert Saleh

(Update: 11:19 a.m.): The team has confirmed Saleh’s dismissal, saying they have “parted ways.”

Previous coverage:

Robert Saleh is no longer the head coach of the New York Jets.

Following the Jets’ 2-3 start to the 2024 NFL season and after a 23-17 loss to the undefeated Minnesota Vikings in London, the team have fired Saleh according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Saleh, who was hired in 2021 and had a 20-36 overall record, has been let go amid apparent disagreements with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Following New York’s 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 4, the former head coach suggested that Rodgers’ pre-snap cadence was a problem. In that defeat, the Jets’ offense took multiple false start penalties.

Rodgers, 40, went on to suggest his teammates need to be held accountable, adding that he has not previously had such an issue with his pre-snap cadence.

Both went on to say publicially that there was no issue between the two and Saleh backtracked his original statement. Saleh’s dismissal seems to suggest something different, however, the Jets since confirmed the coach’s firing and according to a follow-up report, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was named interim head coach.

Saleh also called Rodgers’ play inconsistent after the loss to the Vikings.

In Week 6, the Jets will host the Buffalo Bills (3-2) in their next contest on “Monday Night Football.”

Davante Adams to sit out Raiders’ Week 5 game with injury

Davante Adams to sit out Raiders’ Week 5 game with injury

The New York Jets are right at the center of the Davante Adams trade speculation.

Regardless, he’s out for Week 5.

According to The Athletic’s Diana Russini, the 31-year-old is not going to play in his current team’s upcoming matchup because of an injury… or his potential next team’s contest as well.

Per the report, regardless of what happens in the coming days, Adams is slated to miss Week 5 due to a hamstring issue:

Per Raiders Wire, Adams did miss last week with the same injury.

However, it’s hard to look over the current trade speculation. Adams requested he be dealt and naturally Las Vegas won’t want him to sustain a long-term issue that would hamper any return the team could get for him.

The trade deadline is still a month away on Tuesday November 5. There are four games between now and then and Vegas’ bye week is mixed in there.

According to separate reports, Adams would like to be traded to a team with one of his former teams’ quarterbacks on their roster. That puts Gang Green right in the mix of it.

Jets Wire will provide updates as information is made available.

Jets’ AFC East rival now linked to trade for Davante Adams

Jets’ AFC East rival now linked to trade for Davante Adams

The New York Jets might not be the only team in the AFC East taking a look at Davante Adams.

The All-Pro wide receiver for the Las Vegas Raiders has set the football world ablaze as he requested a trade this week. Pretty quickly, the Jets were connected as a potential suitor.

Now the Buffalo Bills have reportedly thrown their hat into the ring, according to MMQB’s Albert Breer:

Currently the Bills are one game ahead of the Jets in the AFC East as the NFL enters Week 5. Their star quarterback in Josh Allen would probably love tossing passes to Adams.

However, the 31-year-old wideout has expressed an interest in playing with one of his former quarterbacks if he is traded. That’s why New York and New Orleans Saints are high on his list of teams to be dealt to because of Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr, respectively.

Jets Wire will continue to provide updates as information is made available.

Report: Jets are at top of trade ‘wish list’ for Raiders’ Davante Adams

Report: Jets are at top of trade ‘wish list’ for Raiders’ Davante Adams

The New York Jets are a team Davante Adams would reportedly be happy to be traded to.

Adams, 31, requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday. The following day his “wish list” of teams he would like to be traded to has been reported and the Jets are on it.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, New York and the New Orleans Saints are at least two teams Adams would like to move to:

Regarding Adams joining either the Jets or Saints, the connection is clear. The All-Pro receiver would clearly like to be teammates with a familiar quarterback.

In the Big Apple is Aaron Rodgers. In the Big Easy is Derek Carr.

Rodgers, 40, is now with the Jets but was Adams’ longtime teammate while with the Green Bay Packers.

In separate reports, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini noted that the Dallas Cowboys and Jets are “monitoring” the Adams situation. Another update via NFL insider Josina Anderson mentioned the Pittsburgh Steelers’ interest in Adams.

Jets Wire will provide updates as information is made available.

New York Jets’ LB Quincy Williams is the ultimate playmaker

New York Jets’ LB Quincy Williams is the ultimate playmaker

New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams leads his team in tackles and is the ultimate playmaker for defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

Williams will be a huge disruption to the Denver Broncos ground attack if their offensive line cannot climb to the second level on run plays. Also, the Broncos will want to avoid down and long distance situations, if not they’ll see Williams and safety Chuck Clark deployed in Ulbrich’s blitz scheme.

With linebacker C.J Mosley healing from a toe injury, Williams has taken a leadership role on defense. Williams’ impact has been contagious for teammate linebacker Jamien Sherwood who contributed four tackles in the teams week three victory.

Though criticized after their week 1 loss, Williams and the Jets’ defense have allowed just 1.3 touchdowns per game this season. The Broncos seemed to have found some success in the passing game in week 3, but Williams and the Jets’ defense is an entirely different monster.

Jets’ fans can expect exceptional efforts from Williams as long as he remains healthy. Hopefully his comrade Mosley will return from injury soon.

Jets sign veteran Jalen Mills to practice squad

Jets sign veteran Jalen Mills to practice squad

NFL veteran Jalen Mills has joined the New York Jets.

In a small grouping of roster moves, the Jets (2-1) announced that the 30-year-old defensive back was signed to the practice squad. In addition to Mills, linebacker Brandon Smith was added to the taxi squad as well.

In a corresponding move, safety Jaylen Kets was released from the practice squad.

Mills was a seventh-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016. Mills spent the last three seasons with the New England Patriots, the Jets’ AFC East rivals.

Most recently, Mills was with the New York Giants. After signing with the G-Men this spring, he was released in August.

Mills started 34 of the 43 games he played in New England and recorded 123 tackles, two interceptions, 13 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

While with the Eagles, Mills won Super Bowl LII. Current Jets general manager Joe Douglas was in the Eagles’ front office at the time as well.

It’s unlikely that Mills would initially serve as more than a veteran depth option until he picks up the Jets’ defensive scheme.

Jets Wire will continue to provide roster updates throughout the 2024 season.
