Why Iowa State Will Win

It’s been a rough year – and the first time around wasn’t pretty at home in a 79-53 loss to the Jayhawks – but this is still a dangerous team at forcing takeaways and coming up with blocks for stops.

Can the Cyclones hold down the KU outside game? They’re not great at stopping teams from three, but that’s not a problem against a Jayhawk offense that doesn’t do much to bomb away.

The D has to come up with easy points off the mistakes, and Kansas has to be a bit off, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas isn’t that bad from the outside, and Iowa State really can’t stop anyone from hitting threes.

Iowa State is great at moving the ball around, but Kansas is too good at closing out on the three, it’s better on the inside, and it’s not going to allow enough second chance points to matter.

How did the Jayhawks win the first time around? They hit everything from three – connecting on more than 50% from the outside – stuffed the Iowa State shooters, and got out to a massive lead and cruised from there.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is on a roll, playing stronger and sharper as the ten-game winning streak has gone on. Iowa State will be better in the first half than it was in the first game, but it won’t be nearly enough as the offense goes cold in the second half.

Kansas (3-7) vs. Iowa State (6-4) Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Iowa State has a high-powered offense that’s putting up big plays and yards in chunks, but when Kansas is on, it can do that, too. As long as it’s not screwing up, it can go off.

The offense has fallen flat lately – the running game hasn’t worked over the last two games – but the passing attack is moving the chains and doing just fine when it’s not turning the ball over.

What’s been KU’s biggest issue over the last few weeks? Giveaways.

The defense hasn’t come up with a takeaway over the last two games, and the offense got picked off five times. How were the the Jayhawks able to be interesting for the few weeks before the struggles? No giveaways.

The Jayhawks went three straight games without a turnover, and gave it up just once in the win over Texas Tech.

Iowa State’s defense isn’t bad, but it doesn’t force takeaways on a consistent basis. Ten of the team’s 11 turnovers on the year have been generated in just four games.

KU has to hope that this is one of the games when the D isn’t forcing mistakes.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Iowa State Will Win

Yeah … the Kansas running game.

There’s talent and experience in the backfield, but it’s all falling flat over the last few weeks.

Oklahoma State isn’t being confused with the New England Patriots defensively, but it held the Jayhawks to just 39 rushing yards on 24 carries last week. Kansas State allowed just 61 yards the game before.

Kansas has had a few explosions here and there – ripping up Boston College and Texas – but it’s not getting consistent enough performances from the line or the rest of the offense.

Iowa State’s defense has been able to hold up just fine, for the most part. It’s second in the Big 12 against the run, it’s generating sacks on a regular basis, and it should be able to overwhelm the KU offensive front.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The Cyclones will win on the lines. The defensive front will do its part, the offensive line that’s doing a great job in pass protection will keep the limited Jayhawk pass rush from generating anything to bother QB Brock Purdy, and it’ll be a fifth-straight win in the series.

Texas (6-3) vs. Iowa State (5-4) Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

All of a sudden, the Iowa State secondary has gone bye-bye.

To be fair, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma can throw the ball a little bit, but after a strong first seven games of giving up yards and keeping the big plays to a minimum, the Cyclones are getting bombed on.

Both the Sooners and Cowboys averaged way over ten yards per throw, and ISU lost both games.

Sam Ehlinger and the Texas passing game can do a little bit of everything right, and it’s about to get helped by an Iowa State secondary that’s letting just about everyone hit 70% of their passes.

No problems there – Ehlinger was nearly flawless against Kansas State after saving the day against Kansas a few weeks earlier – averaging over nine yards per throw in both games.

Mostly due to Ehlinger’s dual-threat abilities, Texas is the best in the Big 12 and fourth in the nation in third down conversions. The ability to keep the chains moving is helping to overcome a whole slew of massive problems, like …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State’s secondary might be having a whole slew of issues, but it’s holding the Longhorns’ beer.

Texas is getting roasted for well over 230 yards per game be everyone – Rice being the lone exception – giving up two touchdown passes or more in every game and getting ripped for way over eight yards per throw.

Iowa State’s Brock Purdy continues to make a big push to be Second Team All-Big 12 behind Mr. Hurts. He almost pulled the Cyclones out of the fire last week with five touchdown passes in a wild comeback attempt against Oklahoma – falling short on a failed two-point conversion try.

Outside of the loss to Oklahoma State – throwing three picks – he’s been able to limit the mistakes while pushing the offense in game after game. The O might sometimes take a little time off during games, but in the end, it’ll roll for close to 300 yards through the air.

It’ll have no problems doing that this week.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Purdy had the worst game in his short career last year against the Longhorns – throwing for 130 yards in the 24-10 loss. That’s not happening this time around.

Texas is having real problems thanks to that defense that’s just not coming up with enough key stops. At home, Iowa State breaks the two game losing streak in a wild firefight that should come down to whoever has the ball last.

Brock will otutduel Sam.
