Celtics’ Jayson Tatum talks about his offseason, weathering the NBA rumor cycle, and his prep for 2022-23

The Celtics’ star forward also gives us the lowdown on his Gatorade ‘Beat the Heat’ program, which has more to do with hydration than Miami.

Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has been keeping pretty busy for a time of the NBA calendar that usually sees players wind down their activity level, with the St. Louis native holding a pro camp, stopping by a Showtime series grand premiere, and more.

But Tatum took some time out of his offseason schedule to talk about his new partnership with Gatorade, the “Beat the Heat” program to tell us what it is all about, as well as to share some updates on the tireless NBA rumor mill, what he’s working on in anticipation of another run at a title, and several other topics on the latest episode of the Celtics Lab podcast.

So with all that said, let’s check in with the Duke product while we wait for Boston’s 2022 training camp to arrive (note: this interview has been lightly edited for clarity).

Did Kevin Durant really believe the Nets would not beat the Boston Celtics in the 2022 playoffs?

Former Net and friend of KD Mike James heard from Durant himself that he did not expect to beat Boston.

In an odd twist, the Brooklyn Nets losing to the Boston Celtics may not have been as much a surprise to some as one might think. At the start of the 2021-22 NBA season, the Nets were presumptive favorites to win the title behind Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden.

While the Harden experiment did not go well and the vaccination status of Kyrie Irving compounded by injury to Kevin Durant threw a wrench in the Nets’ regular-season expectations, there was still optimism ahead of the 2022 NBA playoffs. Then, the Nets collided with a white-hot Celtics squad that had unexpectedly morphed into the most dangerous team in the league midway through the season.

In a recent interview discussed on the Fox show “Undisputed,” it seems Mike James, a former Net and friend of KD, heard from Durant himself that he did not expect to beat Boston.

‘Chemistry is half the battle,’ says Celtics’ Jayson Tatum; is he dropping a hint about a proposed Jaylen Brown-Kevin Durant swap?

Should we be reading between the lines about a potential Jaylen Brown – KD swap?

It is not uncommon for NBA front office executives in today’s NBA to seek the most talent they can get their hands on via trades and free agency, figuring out the fit between the players later.

You would think a team still so close to the Kyrie Irving experience as the Boston Celtics are might be warier of such an approach. Yet the team is in the news for rumors they might be interested in swapping Boston star wing Jaylen Brown for veteran superstar Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets.

Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum found himself asked directly and indirectly about such a deal, and he has been cautious with his words. But asked by a reporter at his annual pro camp how hard it was to find and keep the kind of chemistry that helped Boston get to within two wins of an NBA title, Tatum did not mince words.

“Chemistry is half the battle. You can have a great team with great talent, and not necessarily jell well together,” suggested the former Duke star via NBC Sports Boston. “The guys … we figured it out in January, and never looked back.”

It can be hard to read between the lines in such situations, but from where we sit, it doesn’t sound like the Celtics star is looking to mess with what’s been working so well for Boston.

Celtics alumnus, broadcaster Brian Scalabrine expresses skepticism over Jaylen Brown-Kevin Durant swap

The former Celtics champ worries Boston will end up on the wrong end of the deal courtesy of Father Time.

The notion of swapping star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown for veteran Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant might be intriguing to some, but there is an increasing number of analysts expressing doubt about the wisdom of such a prospective deal.

Add to them former Boston champion big man and current Celtics broadcaster Brian Scalabrine, who recently made an appearance on Sirius XM Radio to share his views on such a deal. “My only concern with Kevin Durant — and I’m not qualified to answer this — is I have no idea how long (a) 7-foot long, lanky, super highly-skilled (player) is going to last.

“I have no reference point,” he would admit. “Everybody ages differently.”

Scal is right about everyone aging differently, the idea of three seasons after next potentially stuck with the Celtics with little to nothing to remedy a situation should a worst-case or even underwhelming return on their investment play out should give us all considerable pause.

[pickup_prop id=”26317″]

“If (KD) falls off the cliff somewhere down the road, then that’s going to be a tough move because you’re giving up a young, hungry, hardworking (player in Brown) for a guy that I don’t know how much longer he has,” speculated Scalabrine, not even touching on potential further implications of such a deal.

Celtics Hall of Famer Paul Pierce weighs in on a potential Jaylen Brown-Kevin Durant trade

Does the Truth know something we don’t?

Hall of Fame forward Paul Pierce may have grown up a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers but would grow up to become a Boston Celtics legend, playing the vast majority of his career in green and white, only dealt to the Brooklyn Nets after winning a title with the team that drafted him and several near-misses at the end of his prime years.

So The Truth knows a thing or two about the Celtics trading star players to the Nets, and the Kansas product weighed in on the rumors swirling around Boston star forward Jaylen Brown, who has been tied in reports to Brooklyn’s star forward Kevin Durant. Attending a showing for the Showtime “Point Gods” documentary premiere, airing on Showtime on July 29 at the Midnight Theater in midtown Manhattan, Pierce offered his opinion (via the New York Post’s Jared Schwartz) on whether the Celtics would deal Brown for Durant.

“Are we talking about the Celtics?” asked the Boston icon jokingly. “No, they aren’t going to that.” Starting to walk away from the Post’s Zach Brazilier as he attempted to follow up, Pierce repeated emphatically, “They aren’t going to do that.”

Does The Truth know something the rest of us don’t? Or does he agree with us that such a move would be worth more than the cost while putting the Celtics in a position to perhaps have a better chance to win now at the expense of risking a long period of decline later?

Either way, we’re inclined to agree.

‘I love the guys that we got,’ says Celtics’ Jayson Tatum of Jaylen Brown-Kevin Durant trade rumors

The Duke product seemed skeptical about the validity of reports Boston offered Jaylen Brown for KD.

Whatever is actually going on between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets regarding trade talk concerning star forwards Jaylen Brown and Kevin Durant, it’s clear that star Boston swingman Jayson Tatum is happy focusing on the season to come with the players he has with him on the team now.

The New York Post’s Jared Schwartz recently tweeted a video of Tatum at the Midnight Theater in midtown Manhattan for the Point Gods premiere, airing on Showtime on July 29 in which the St. Louis native was asked his opinion on the reported trade talks. “I just play basketball,” said Tatum, deferring to the front office. “I played with (Durant) in the Olympics, he’s a great player,” he added.

“But, that’s not my decision,” he elaborated in a show of support for his current teammates including presumably Brown. “I love our team, I love the guys that we got.”

“I love our team,” emphasized the Duke product. “I just go out there and play with my teammates, I don’t put that (GM) hat on”

“I don’t believe everything I see on TV; I just see some (expletive) about me that was a lie; you never really know what is true and what is not true,” he would add.

Charania: ‘I haven’t heard of any significant displeasure from Jaylen Brown’ regarding the Boston Celtics

If there were ever any impetus to get a deal done moving Jaylen Brown to the Brooklyn Nets for Kevin Durant, it isn’t coming from the Celtics star.

The doldrums of the 2022 NBA offseason were jolted back to a state of alert when both ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported trade talks between the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics revolving around veteran Nets star Kevin Durant and rising Celtics star Jaylen Brown early on Monday morning.

But then details began to trickle out that the trade talks were neither recent nor active. This hinted that the emergence of these details could be due to the lack of interest in the asking price Brooklyn hopes to get for Durant in any deal. Charania appeared on NBC Sports Boston later that day to add some context to what he’d been hearing about Boston’s side of the equation, and whether Brown had any interest in leaving his current team.

“Obviously, he’s under contract with the Celtics for two more years and I haven’t heard anything about any type of displeasure that he’s had with the organization,” said Charania.

Opposing NBA executives not happy about the Boston Celtics adding Malcolm Brogdon, Danilo Gallinari

Boston getting better doesn’t make everyone happy, it seems.

The Boston Celtics now have one of if not the strongest rotations in the league from top to bottom, to the delight of the team’s fans and the dismay of those of other teams.

But it is not just fans of other franchises who are feeling some trepidation at the thought of facing Boston’s revamped roster next season. Executives of opposing ball clubs around the NBA are also none too pleased about the Celtics’ offseason upgraded, and have been sharing their displeasure with Heavy’s veteran NBA reporter Steve Bulpett.

“He’ll be good for them,” suggested the unnamed Eastern Conference executive. “Going to Boston, with strong people around him, unfortunately, yes, he’ll be good for them.

A day in the life of Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser

Among Boston’s offseason moves, Hauser talks about how life is after re-signing to a longer-term deal.

The Boston Celtics evidently like what they see in the growth of the game of forward Sam Hauser, with the team having elected to sign the University of Virginia product to a mostly guaranteed three-year deal to a regular roster spot with the ball club.

Hauser had himself a solid rookie season with the Celtics, hitting his shots from beyond the arc at about a 42% clip whether playing at the G League level with the Maine Celtics or playing with the parent club against NBA talent. What has it been like lately for the Green Bay native since inking his first extension to play for Boston?

The Celtics recently put together a short clip of the former Cavalier saying exactly that in his own words.

Jae’Sean Tate on new Rockets contract: ‘You can’t put a price on happiness’

Jae’Sean Tate on his new contract: “Houston is my home, and I felt like this is something I wanted to be a part of and I’m excited about. You can’t put a price on happiness.”

As an accomplished NBA starter and strong defender, the new contract for Houston Rockets forward Jae’Sean Tate (three years, $22.1 million) is viewed by many around the league as a relative bargain, particularly when considering the team option for the final season.

Yet, it should be noted that the Rockets let Tate out of his earlier — and much cheaper — contract a year early, which gave Tate a sizable bump in his 2022-23 season salary. That may have made the 26-year-old more willing to work with the team on friendlier terms for the back end.

In addition, when Tate next becomes a free agent in 2024 or (more likely) 2025, the Rockets will have full Bird rights and be able to re-sign him to a larger contract at that time. That could especially be the case if Houston is successful with spending plans related to its significant salary cap space in 2023, since the Rockets would not need to be as cautious with future contract terms if they’re going to be above the cap, regardless.

Yet, even with those qualifiers, the current rate for Tate’s services feels like a relative bargain in a market where Oklahoma City’s Lu Dort received a five-year, $87.5-million deal earlier this month.

In a new interview with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Tate said he believes he’s worth more money, but there were sentimental factors that played a role in taking the contract with Houston that he ultimately did.

I think I’m worth more, but I like that. That keeps me hungry and motivated. It’s life-changing, but it’s not generation-changing. My whole thing is to keep working my ass off to get to that point. Going in there (negotiations), I had to think if I wanted to bet on myself more. Every step of the way, I’ve bet on myself. I could’ve waited, and who knows what the season brought and free agency, but I felt that Houston is my home, and I felt like this is something I wanted to be a part of and I’m excited about. You can’t put a price on happiness.

Beyond the importance of being happy, Tate is also correct regarding the risks of a deferred payday. It’s absolutely possible that an injury during the 2022-23 season could have limited Tate’s market a year from now, or that the Rockets and their increasingly crowded young frontcourt might make minutes (and thus, statistical production) harder to come by. That’s a factor that KJ Martin appears extremely aware of.

The bottom line is that Tate got what he refers to as life-changing money, and he’s happy with his situation in Houston. Heading into a season in which he could be in line for another starting role, Tate appears to be in the right frame of mind to take advantage of any opportunities.

In two seasons with the Rockets, Tate has averaged 11.6 points (50.1% FG, 31.0% on 3-pointers), 5.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 26.4 minutes.
