The Houston Texans loaded up on talented playmakers for the secondary in the early rounds of the 2022 NFL draft, hoping to transform that unit with an infusion of young studs.

Second-round pick Jalen Pitre brings an intriguing blend of size, length, athleticism and versatility, along with the ball skills and instincts he showed off during Friday’s practice.

WATCH: Derek Stingley Jr. grabs end-zone INT at Texans practice

Watch Houston Texans rookie Derek Stingley Jr. show off his big-play ability during training camp practice

When the Houston Texans spent the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft on LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., they likely envisioned plenty of interceptions in clutch situations.

Stingley provided a glimpse of that potential during Wednesday’s training camp practice, snatching an interception in the end zone during 1-on-1 drills, showing off the instincts and ball skills that made him a dominant force at the college level.

Despite missing most of the 2021 season due to injury, Stingley’s lofty potential was still enough to convince the Texans to make him a top-five selection, and the first cornerback off the board.

So far, the early returns are looking good.

Derek Stingley Jr. getting punt return reps for Texans

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft is getting some work in the return game during his first training camp

The Houston Texans spent the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft on LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. with the expectation that he’ll be come a shutdown artist on defense.

While he develops in that area of his game, the rookie is also finding other ways to make an immediate impact, working as a punt returner during training camp, per Mark Lane of Texans Wire:

“Yeah, Stingley can do a lot of things,” said Smith. “Punt returner is one of them. Now I’m not saying that he for sure is going to for sure be our punt returner, but the more things you can do. You probably noticed Derek getting more reps today. We’ll continue to bring him along at the pace that we had set up before camp started. He gets a little better each day, too.”

Stingley was slowed by injury last season, but was still impressive enough on tape for the Texans to make him the first cornerback off the board in this year’s draft.

If he’s able to stay healthy, Stingley could easily develop into one of the best corners in the league. Until then, he’s athletic enough with the ball in his hands to make a big splash in the return game, as well.

Texans 1st-round pick Kenyon Green honored by his hometown

Houston Texans first-round pick Kenyon Green was recently honored by his hometown in Texas

The Houston Texans made Texas A&M offensive lineman Kenyon Green one of their first-round picks in the 2022 NFL draft, but that’s not the only honor he’s enjoying this year.

Green’s hometown of Humble, Texas, proclaimed July 13th, 2022 as “Kenyon Green Day” in the town, showing respect for the star athlete.

He’ll no doubt have plenty of residents from Humble cheering him on when he takes the field for the first time in the NFL later this year, and throughout his pro football career.

Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans subject of harrowing report

A report has put Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans in a more disturbing light

An investigative report published by The New York Times on Tuesday puts Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson and his former team, the Houston Texans, in an extremely troubling light.

Written by Jenny Vrentas, the article shows how Watson received massages from at least 66 different women over 17 months.

The quarterback, who will not face criminal charges, has been hit with 24 civil suits.

His status for the 2022 NFL season is currently the subject of an NFL investigation. Commission Roger Goodell will have the final word on what punishment — if any — Watson faces.

Per the report:

Yet a New York Times examination of records, including depositions and evidence for the civil lawsuits as well as interviews of some of the women, showed that Watson engaged in more questionable behavior than previously known.

The Times’s review also showed that Watson’s conduct was enabled, knowingly or not, by the team he played for at the time, the Houston Texans, which provided the venue Watson used for some of the appointments. A team representative also furnished him with a nondisclosure agreement after a woman who is now suing him threatened online to expose his behavior.

Vrentas published a series of tweets about the reporting:

Rusty Hardin, Watson’s lawyer, said his client “continues to vehemently deny” the allegations in the lawsuits. He declined to respond in detail to The Times’s questions, but said in a statement, “We can say when the real facts are known this issue will appear in a different light.”

Why Texans fans should be excited about Jalen Pitre

Breaking down what Baylor defensive back Jalen Pitre brings to the Houston Texans

After spending the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft on LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., the Houston Texans added yet another dynamic playmaker to their defensive backfield in the second round, selecting Baylor’s Jalen Pitre at No. 37 overall.

While Stingley gives the Texans a traditional shutdown artist who will line up outside, Pitre brings versatility that should allow him to line up all over the field. His best fit will likely come in the slot, but he’s got all the physical tools to play on the outside, as well, along with the range and instincts to drop back and play safety.

Pitre was a key part of Dave Aranda’s dominant defense at Baylor, and the Bears maximized his versatility by letting him roam around and make plays at every level of the field. The Texans would be wise to give him the same kind of role, as he learns the scheme and adjusts to the speed of the NFL game.

After an impressive college career, Pitre made the most of his trip to this year’s Senior Bowl, and put up strong workout numbers at both the NFL Scouting Combine and his pro day. He’s got the leadership, competitiveness and character to quickly develop into a cornerstone player in the Texans’ locker room.

Traditionally and statistically, Day 3 of the NFL Draft is a total wasteland. You’re far, far better packaging your picks to move up into the top three rounds of a future draft – the odds of getting a consistently decent starter are shockingly small.

But every team thinks it can make magic out of the Day 3 mess of prospects, and it’s worth a shot to dumb-luck into a possible mainstay. What are the remaining needs that need to be filled for each team? Here are every team’s picks so far with the possibilities of who they could get.

Of course this all blows up once the trades start flying, but the idea is to give a rough snapshot of what each team might be able to do.

Andre Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins blast Houston Texans’ exec Jack Easterby

Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins have no love for Texans’ exec Jack Easterby

Things are ugly in Houston. Deshaun Watson is unhappy over the hiring of Nick Caserio’s hire as Texans GM and their failure to listen to his input about that hire or suggestions in the coaching search.

Now, two former Houston wideouts have put exec Jack Easterby squarely on blast for ruining players’ careers in their opinion.

And on the coaching front, Houston suddenly is interested in interviewing Chiefs’ OC Eric Bienemy after showing zero interest despite Watson suggesting him.

The bad news is the Texans must wait as the window to speak to coaches involved in the playoffs has closed.

The window for fixing things with their star quarterback also might closing if it isn’t shut already.
