12 free agents Giants could target based on coaching hires

These 12 free agents could become free agent targets of the New York Giants based on their offseason coaching and coordinator hires.

The New York Giants significantly overhauled their coaching staff this offseason, changing two of their three coordinators while also switching out a multitude of assistant coaches.

Because of those changes, the team will need to readjust their personnel by way of free agency and the 2024 NFL draft in an effort to match talent with the new schemes.

As a reminder, here are the notable coaching changes:

  • Defensive coordinator, Shane Bowen
  • Special teams coordinator, Michael Ghobrial
  • Running backs coach, Joel Thomas
  • Offensive line coach, Carmen Bricillo
  • Tight ends coach, Tim Kelly

These new arrivals create an interesting dynamic headed into free agency. They are intimately familiar with several of the available players and have developed trust with them over the years.

While that doesn’t necessarily mean any or all of them will be signed by the Giants, there is likely to be some crossover.

Here is a look at 12 impending free agents the Giants could target based on the above coaching changes/hires.

These former Giants are now Super Bowl LVIII champions

Several former members of the New York Giants picked up a championship ring as the Chiefs beat the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday night.

Both teams had several former members of the New York Giants on their roster or among their coaching staff, and that means a handful are now owners of a championship ring.

Many of them are likely to be cheered on and celebrated by Giants Nation but not all of them. There is at least one outlier who frequently leads to controversy within the community.

With that in mind, here’s a quick look at four former Giants who are now Super Bowl LVIII champions.

2024 NFL draft: Giants go heavy on wide receivers in most mocks

In many post-Senior Bowl mock drafts, the New York Giants stand pat at No. 6 overall and select a wide receiver, but not all.

The Senior Bowl has come and gone, meaning the 2024 NFL draft is inching ever closer. And will additional data now at their disposal, many league experts, analysts, and insiders have readjusted their early mock draft approach.

For the New York Giants, things remain relatively familiar. Their three most common projected selections are wide receiver, offensive tackle, and quarterback — now in that order.

With most anticipating the top quarterbacks going off the board early, wide receivers have seen a significant boost at No. 6 overall. But which one?

Here’s a round-up of the most recent mock drafts and who they have the Giants selecting.

2024 NFL draft and free agency: Ranking the Giants’ positional needs

Ranking the top 6 needs for the New York Giants headed into free agency and the 2024 NFL draft.

The 2023 NFL season is almost over. The new league year begins in about six weeks and teams will be paring down their rosters in anticipation of free agency and the 2024 NFL draft.

The New York Giants front office, led by general manager Joe Schoen, has their hands full this winter after a disappointing 6-11 campaign and fissures in the coaching ranks.

The Giants’ needs are aplenty this offseason and one has to wonder which positions Schoen will prioritize first.

Here is a list of the Giants’ top-6 needs heading into 2024 from the least important to the most.

5 players Giants should watch at the 2024 Senior Bowl

Here are five non-quarterbacks the New York Giants should keep an eye on at the 2024 Senior Bowl.

The 2024 Senior Bowl will be held in Mobile, Alabama this Saturday, February 3 and the New York Giants — as usual — will have a heavy scouting presence at the game.

The Giants have heavily relied on the event over the years to recruit for the ensuing drafts and have even selected the MVP of the game including quarterbacks Daniel Jones, Davis Webb, and Kyle Lauletta.

This year, the Giants hold the sixth overall selection in the NFL draft and will be faced with some tough choices come April.

Here are five players the Giants could focus on this Saturday that are not named Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr. — two quarterbacks with first-round grades.

Note: The list below is more Day 2 or Day 3 prospects.

8 ex-Giants will play or participate in Super Bowl LVIII

Eight former members of the New York Giants will play, coach or participate in a Super Bowl LVIII battle between the 49ers and Chiefs.

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens, 17-10, to punch their ticket to Super Bowl LVIII.

Mere hours later, the San Francisco 49ers roared back and picked up a come-from-behind win over the Detroit Lions, 34-31, sending them to The Big Game.

The game will be a rematch of Super Bowl LIV — a 31-20 Kansas City victory.

There will also be a slight New York Giants flavor to the entire thing. Eight former members of the team will either play, coach or participate in the NFL’s classic finale.

Here’s a look at all eight (front office members were not included):

Giants hire Michael Ghobrial: 5 things to know about the special teams coordinator

The New York Giants have hired Michael Ghobrial as their next special teams coordinator and here are five things fans should know.

The New York Giants officially announced the hire of Michael Ghobrial as their next special teams coordinator on Thursday.

Ghobrial will replace long-time Giants coach Thomas McGaughey, who was fired on Black Monday after six seasons with the team (second stint).

Here are five things fans should know about Ghobrial.

Making a 53-man roster out of active ex-Giants

Giants Wire constructs a full 53-man roster (and partial coaching staff) made entirely of active, former members of the New York Giants.

The NFL is a league of significant turnover. Every offseason, team rosters are churned and free agency leads to the recycling of personnel.

Earlier this week, we took a look at the production from all ex-New York Giants players currently in the league. That led us to think: Could we make a 53-man roster entirely out of former Giants?

Well, as it turns out, we could.

Here are the ground rules we set for this exercise:

  • All players/coaches had to have been on a 90-man roster or practice squad at some point during the 2023 season (dating back to March 15, 2023) with one exception (below).
  • Players who weren’t in the NFL in 2023 were still considered if they were active in another league (CFL, XFL, etc.) this past season.
  • Players/coaches had to have been on the Giants’ 90-man roster, 53-man roster, or practice squad for at least one day at some point in their careers.
  • Construction of the 53-man had to be realistic and balanced in terms of numbers at each position (ie. couldn’t go 1 RB and 10 WR). Players also had to be listed at a position they’ve played (ie. couldn’t put a TE along the OL, etc.).

This is what we came up with…
