This is NOT a ranking of where the teams are going to end up. This is only based on how good we think the ACC teams are going into whatever the 2020 season is going to be.

CFN Preview 2020: All 130 Team Previews

14. Boston College Eagles

Boston College CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … another terrific running game. AJ Dillon might be gone, but David Bailey is another big, pounding runner working behind a great line.

Be Concerned About … the defensive side could use some work up front and in the secondary. It’s not a bad situation, but the D isn’t going to be a rock early on. The Eagles finished dead last in the ACC and 122th in the nation against the pass.

The Season Will Be Successful If … new head coach Jeff Hafley can get the Eagles to a bowl game. It’ll be a fight to battle through the ACC slate, but BC is probably the best of the last-ranked teams among the Power Five conferences. It can get to a bowl.

13. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Georgia Tech CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the lines that had a year to get the pieces in place. Georgia Tech needed to undergo a total overhaul on offense, but the D line needed help, too. They’ll be better.

Be Concerned About … a passing game that still needs work. The tweaking from the option attack under the old regime will still take a while to get going.

The Season Will Be Successful If … Geoff Collins can make the Yellow Jackets more competitive. There should be a nice turnaround, but the team got blown out seven times last season and lost to Citadel. Flirting with a. bowl game is a must.

12. Syracuse Orange

Syracuse CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … a passing game that should be dangerous. As long as the offensive line can keep QB Tommy DeVito from getting beaten up, the Orange will have a potent attack.

Be Concerned About … that O line. That’s still going to be an issue, and the defensive front is still just okay. The secondary will clean up a lot of messes, but the run defense has to be stronger.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Orange look and play more like the 2018 version that went 10-3. Dino Babers has to turn the program into a consistent threat, but getting to a bowl game would be a good rebound after a losing 2019.

[lawrence-related id=514655]

11. Duke Blue Devils

Duke CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … a really, really good defense that gets a whole lot of key parts back including a sneaky-good pair of defensive ends in Chris Rumph and Victor Dimukeje. It’s Duke – the offense won’t be as bad as it was in the middle of last year.

Be Concerned About … the offense that was really that bad in the middle of last year. Passing efficiency and simply moving the chains were both major problems. Clemson QB transfer Chase Brice might be able to solve both issues.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Blue Devils can start out fast like they did in 2019 and keep it going, at least offensively. Three bowl appearances in four years would show that last season was just a blip.

10. NC State Wolfpack

NC State CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … a team that went through an ugly transition last year and should enjoy the payoff. There are still a slew of question marks on both sides of the ball, but the defensive front seven will be great and the kicking game should be among the nation’s best.

Be Concerned About … the passing game that was way too inefficient and an offense that stalled way too often. NC State should bounce back quickly after going 4-8, but now the Dave Doeren era has question marks.

The Season Will Be Successful If … NC State gets to the nine-win mark, or the equivalent of a normal season with that sort of success depending on what the schedule is. Doeren had two straight nine-win seasons before last year’s clunker.

[vertical-gallery id=516452]

9. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Wake Forest CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … a passing game that should still be really effective and really fun. Sage Surratt would be among the nation’s better receivers, and QB San Hartman is in for a big year.

Be Concerned About … the running game should be just okay and the secondary will be suspect. The O will put points on the board, and the D might give them up just as quickly.

The Season Will Be Successful If … Wake Forest goes bowling for a fifth straight season. Dave Clawson has done one of the better jobs in college football considering what he has to work with.

8. Florida State Seminoles

Florida State CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … a team loaded with NFL talent on the defensive side of the ball. If new head coach Mike Norvell can do what he does offensively, the other side will take care of the rest.

Be Concerned About … an offensive line that hasn’t been there for years. The Noles haven’t been able to fix the front five, and that’s been the primary issue for the mediocre seasons. It should be better, but the star power is still missing.

The Season Will Be Successful If … FSU looks like it’s about to turn the corner back into superpower status. Norvell is inheriting a nice group to build around. There can’t be any stressing over getting bowl eligible.

7. Louisville Cardinals

Louisville CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the exciting offense that should be a weekly thrill ride. Scott Satterfield turned the program around in just one year, and now he’s has a loaded receiving corps for the good quarterback options to work with.

Be Concerned About … an offensive line that allowed the most tackles for loss in college football. The defensive side has to be better against the run after finishing second-to-last in the ACC.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Cardinal offense firmly establishes itself as a thing the rest of the ACC has to freak out about on a regular basis. ing considered one of the league’s top five teams would be a great step forward.

6. Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … a rock-solid team under Bronco Mendenhall that might have lost QB Bryce Perkins, but doesn’t have any major weaknesses. There might not be a whole lot of flash, but the special teams, coaching, and defensive back seven are going to be outstanding.

Be Concerned About … Bryce Perkins. It’s not like the offense will fall off the map, but there wasn’t enough of a ground game and now the Cavaliers have to go on without its heart-and-soul quarterback.

The Season Will Be Successful If … Virginia goes into the regular season finale with a shot at the Coastal. This isn’t going to be the team that won the division and went to the ACC Championship and Orange Bowl, but it should be able to be a factor in the race.

CFN in 60 Video: Clemson Tigers Preview
[jwplayer NJ1kg6i1]

2020 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Trevor Lawrence, Jr. Clemson
He was the No. 1, superstar, can’t-miss, this-is-the-franchise-guy-who-might-possibly-be-better-than-Deshuan-Watson recruit for the program in 2018, and in his time all he’s been able to do is lead the team to two ACC championships, two national title appearances, one national championship, and with a fairly decent 29-1 record in the 30 games he has been a part of.

And now, he’s embracing the role of college football legend, Face of the Franchise, and all-around leader to a grander scale both on and off the field. Thanks to the silly rules that make a player wait for three years after high school to be eligible for the NFL Draft, he’s still around for at least one more year.

Enjoy.

2020 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DE Gregory Rousseau, Soph. Miami
It’s putting way too much unfair pressure on anyone to potentially be another Chase Young, but when it comes to next level pass rushers and college stars who can get into the backfield – and the ACC has a whole lot of them this year – you’re not crazy putting Rousseau into the conversation for a top three overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Banged up as a freshman, he busted out last season with 54 tackles, with 15.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss – by the way, Young finished with 46 sacks with 16.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss – as one of the nation’s top and steadiest producers. And now he has Temple transfer Quincy Roche on the other side to take the heat off.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense was supposed to undergo an overhaul, but it turned out to be far tougher than simply changing around the style. Head coach Geoff Collins and offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude had to try fitting a square peg into a round hole, looking to create a diverse spread attack with players built for a triple-option offense.

The Yellow Jackets aren’t looking to be 2019 LSU or anything when it comes to bombing away, but they’re still going to go through growing pains trying to generate more of a passing attack. For an O that was dead last in the nation in red-zone scoring percentage, 125th in third down tries, and averaging a paltry 286 yards and 16.7 points overall.

Finding the right quarterback continues to be the first piece to fit in. Lucas Johnson transferred to San Diego State, Tobias Oliver is a receiver, and asking for freshmen Jeffrey Sims and Tucker Gleason to be factors right away is a lot.

Sophomore James Graham just has to be efficient. He only completed 45% of his passes for 1,164 yards and 12 touchdowns with seven picks, and he didn’t push the ball down the field enough. He’s a good runner, and he had moments when he came through with key passes, but again, he has to be more effective and steadier.

CFN in 60 Video: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Preview
[jwplayer yRdPrgZw]

Are the receivers in place to do more with the passing game? The recruiting class was heavy on pass catchers who’ll all get early work. 5-10, 155-pound Ahmarean Brown had an effective freshman season, averaging 19 yards per catch with seven touchdowns on just 21 grabs.

In all, five of the top six wide receivers are back, but to put the Georgia Tech passing game into perspective, its receivers combined to catch 124 passes for 1,607 yards and 14 touchdowns. LSU’s Ja’Marr chase caught 84 passes for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns by himself.

It’s not that the offensive linemen in place weren’t good blockers, it’s that they were good blockers for a different style. The line was missing a ton of big thumpers, and it had a whole lot of issues trying to keep defensive fronts out of the backfield.

A few pieces are already in place, but it’s going to be up to 6-7, 320-pound Vanderbilt transfer Devin Cochran to take on a starting role right away at one tackle spot, and 6-6, 310-pound Tennessee transfer Ryan Johnson to step in at guard.

Jordan Mason is back to carry the ground game, and 212-pound Jamious Griffin will get more work after getting in a little early work. There are big, good rushers in place who were built to handle the work, but they need more room to move.

How crazy is it to try predicting a college football season months in advance when 1) there wasn’t any spring ball, 2) there aren’t any real depth charts to go off of, 3) and we don’t even know what the 2020 season is going to be?

Just crazy enough to potentially get some fantastic values on the early lines.

You can bet now at BetMGM on a whole lot of college football games – including going really insane looking at lines in November – with the possibility of hitting something big.

We’ll be diving in a whole lot deeper when we do this for real just before the season. But for now …

Clemson vs Georgia Tech Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Clemson Will Win

So you know all those Clemson Tigers who got picked over NFL Draft weekend? What, there didn’t seem like there were that many from a national championship-caliber program? That’s because a whole lot of them came back.

Four of the top five tacklers might be gone, but the defensive line returns most of the parts, enough of the top receivers are back, and the backfield tandem of QB Trevor Lawrence and RB Travis Etienne is still hanging around.

Georgia Tech might be returning enough experience to be better, but it still has to figure out how to move the ball. It’s not like the team suddenly figured it out late last season. Stop the run, stop the Yellow Jackets.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

There’s a whole lot returning.

It might still be a little while longer to make the full transition from the Paul Johnson option attack days to what head man Geoff Collins is trying to do, but at least there’s experience.

A few Power Five-sized offensive linemen are transferring in, 20 of the top 21 tacklers from last year are expected to be back, QB James Graham returns along with most of the top rushers, and the top three pass catchers are there.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

Is all the Georgia Tech experience enough to actually beat the big dog in the season opener? No, but it might be just enough to keep it relatively close …

For a while.

Clemson is pretty good at the whole make-a-statement thing. Including last year’s win over Georgia Tech, it has won its last three openers by a combined score of 156 to 24.

The Tigers pull away big after a competitive first quarter.

NFL Draft 2020: ACC

The ACC and the NFL Draft haven’t had a great relationship over the last several years when it comes to sending bulk talent to the next level, but it has been fantastic in the first round.

Clemson has done its part, and Florida State has been a decent feeder from time to time, but last year it was Duke’s Daniel Jones who made the most noise at the sixth overall pick. In all, seven ACC players were selected on Day One last year, and just three of them were from Clemson.

Six were selected early in 2018 – highlighted by Lamar Jackson being picked at the 32 by Baltimore – and four went in the first round in 2017.

The league has done okay to showcase itself, but this year should be a bit of an issue.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

The line for the total ACC players drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is just 3.5.

The last time the ACC had fewer than four players selected early was 2003, but that was the last year Miami was in the Big East. If you want to count all the current ACC programs, it’s been a long, long time since there weren’t been four players picked in the first.

This year, start with the obvious. Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons will likely go in the top five – top ten, at worst – and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton will be one of the first offensive tackles off the board.

And then it all dries up in a huge hurry.

Can Clemson CB AJ Terrell find his way in? That’s not a given.

Will Tiger WR Tee Higgins make it into the first round? Ehhhhhh, it’s possible, but hardly a sure thing. Terrell has a better shot than Higgins.

So set the bar at three. Outside of Higgins, there isn’t another ACC player who’ll likely be sniffing the top 32. Florida State RB Cam Akers and Virginia CB Bryce Hall are some of the only other ACC players who’ll be in the mix for the second round, much less the first.

So …

[lawrence-related id=434346]

How Many ACC Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

It’s going to be a historically weak first round for the ACC.

With Miami not holding up its end of the bargain, and with Florida State a bit down in the NFL talent department, it’s up to Clemson to send its superstars to the next level, but the tsunami is coming in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Do you feel like sticking with the side of history and go with the hope that Higgins is a first rounder? He’s got top 32 talent, and it’s not a crazy call. Best of all, the over is where all the value is. The ACC will definitely get three players drafted in the first round, but …

That’s it. Expect the under on the 3.5.

Prediction: Under

ACC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which ACC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit – that’s obviously a huge deal in the ACC – but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best ACC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

ACC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

5 Coaches Who’ll Be Much Better In Year Two: 20 For 2020 College Football Topics, No. 15

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 15: The five second year head coaches who should have a much stronger Year Two.

Well that didn’t go so well.

25 college football head coaches are going into their second seasons at the helm, and now is where the production is supposed to start to kick in.

There’s usually a reason as head coach is taking over a program, and most of the time it’s because the last guy got canned. So there’s a grace period because of all the work there is to do, but there’s usually not enough of one.

Even so, Year Two is when the turnarounds are supposed to come. Unfortunately, unlike our piece last season on the 5 Instant Impact New Head Coaches – which turned out to be close to the pin – the 5 Year Two Coaches Who’ll Be Much, Much Better really, really didn’t work.

And why?

Chad Morris at Arkansas … oops. Willie Taggart at Florida State … dropped too soon, but fired. And it goes on from there, so this time around these five have to be right.

Which five got through a slew of first year problems and are about to blow up?

The five coaches about to make the biggest instant impact in their second seasons are …

5. Tom Arth, Akron

There’s nowhere to go but up.

Win one game, and it’s already going to be an improved season. Win three, and it’ll be a huge step forward. Go bowling, and Tom Arth is your coach of the year.

Akron was easily the worst team in college football last season.

It was the only team that failed to win a game. It was dead last in the nation in total offense, couldn’t generate a lick of production on the defensive front, and it got worse as the year went on scoring six points or fewer in five of the last seven games.

[lawrence-related id=508585]

But to give Arth a little bit of credit, he had plenty of work to do after taking over a team team that closed out 2018 on a five-game losing streak.

The 38-year-old worked his way through D-III John Carroll – his alma mater, which he took to three D-III playoff appearances – before taking on the Chattanooga gig. He went 9-13 with the Mocs, but that was enough to get him the Akron job.

So what are things possibly going to be better in Year Two? Experience has to count for something.

With the season slipping away, Akron went young to get the time logged in. Now, if all goes according to plan, ten starters will be back on O, six should return on D, and there’s hope to get off to a hot start with Youngstown State, New Mexico State, Clemson …

Starting 2-0 is a possibility, with home games against UMass and Bowling Green to potentially crank up a few wins.

0-12 to 4-8?

NEXT: The adjustment continues …

Louisville (21-3) vs. Georgia Tech (11-13) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Louisville Will Win

Georgia Tech just can’t seem to get this thing going. It’s good enough to battle in plenty of good fights – like the 68-64 loss to the Cardinals a few weeks ago – but it has lost five of its last eight games.

Louisville was able to get by on takeaways – it was a +7 in turnover margin. Georgia Tech is among the worst teams in the country when it comes to mistakes, turning it over 16 times per game. The Cardinals don’t force a lot of turnovers, but any little bit helps.

This isn’t a high-powered Yellow Jacket team – it doesn’t do anything from three. Low-scoring, no outside shooting, too many turnovers, bad from the free throw line – it’s all a bad combination against this Cardinal team that’s way too good from three and way too strong on the boards.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Louisville might do a great job from three, but Georgia Tech is one of the better teams in the ACC at defending on the perimeter.

It’s a good shooting team from inside the arc, with a good enough inside presence to pound for points on one end, and enough blocked shots to be okay on the other.

The rebounding is good enough to hold up, so as long as this doesn’t get into any sort of an up-and-down shootout, at home, the Yellow Jackets can hang.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech should be a wee bit pluckier than it might seem.

Louisville will win – the Yellow Jackets just don’t do enough from the outside – but watch for this to slow down just enough to keep this from getting too ugly until late.
