Arkansas State vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

Well there’s the passing game.

It’s been a rough year overall for Arkansas State with eight straight losses after opening with a win over Central Arkansas, but at least the air show was fun – and then it wasn’t.

The Red Wolves failed to hit 200 yards though the air – and couldn’t get to 225 yards overall – in ugly losses to South Alabama and Appalachian State, and then everything clicked with Layne Hatcher bombing away for 444 yards  in the 27-24 win over ULM.

Georgia State’s secondary is struggling – to be nice – but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Georgia State Will Win

It has at least one pick in each of the last five games. This matters because Arkansas State is all too happy to keep giving the ball away.

Georgia State’s offense has been a bit hit-or-miss over the second half of the season, but it’s been good enough to win four of the last five games helped by nine takeaways overall and a grand total of one turnover.

The Panthers have a whopping turnover margin of +8 over the five-game stretch. Meanwhile, Arkansas State has turned it over eight times in the last three games.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State got the win it needed to have to set up a wee bit of a breather over the last two weeks. It beat a Coastal Carolina team that didn’t have Grayson McCall, and now the Sun Belt title dreams are still on.

It needs Appalachian State to lose a few times, so more realistically, this is the game for the 5-5 Panthers to get bowl eligible – it doesn’t want to have to beat Troy next week.

Arkansas State will want to make this a shootout, but the defensive side is about to get ripped through – the two giveaways aren’t going to help.

Georgia State vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The offense isn’t the same without Grayson McCall.

The Coastal Carolina offense wasn’t the machine rolls over the mediocre teams, but it didn’t blow up against Appalachian State or Georgia Southern, and the yards didn’t produce a ton of points in the 35-28 win over Troy. Now the star quarterback is out, and veteran Bryce Carpenter is in.

The Chanticleers won 28-8 over Georgia Southern thanks to the defense and running game, but Carpenter threw for just 85 yards, and now gets a Georgia State defense that’s been solid overall against the pass.

It will give up 200 yards or so if everything is working, but it won’t get gouged.

The Georgia State rushing offense has been terrific – tearing off over 200 yards in each of the last four games and in six of the last seven.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Coastal Carolina is still terrific.

It might not be the same without McCall, but the ground attack took over with 220 yards against Georgia Southern and ran for over 200 yards against everyone but Appalachian State.

There’s a good rotation, everyone is fresh, and the offense should be able to dink and dunk enough to keep things moving against a Georgia State team that doesn’t do a whole lot to control the clock.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

No, this isn’t the Coastal Carolina offense of the past few seasons, but it’s still good enough and the defense continues to be great.

Georgia State needs to run the ball – and it should – but it’ll come up just short as the second half rolls on. It’ll be a close, entertaining game that will come down to moving the chains.

Coastal Carolina will do it when needed, and Georgia State won’t.

Georgia State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

On a three-game winning streak, the Panthers have kicked in the running game with close to 900 yards on the ground over the stretch while also being able to balance it all out with an effective passing game to keep everything moving.

There are problems – the yards aren’t always translating into points – but the defense has been able to hold up in key moments and allowing 19 points per game overall.

Can it handle the running game? Does it have the front line to hold up against the Louisiana attack? It was able to keep the Georgia Southern quirky ground game to just over 200 yards and held Army to 258 – teams aren’t gouging the Panthers.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Louisiana Will Win

Again, for all of the good things Georgia State is doing, it’s having a hard time putting the biscuit in the basket.

The passing game isn’t efficient enough, the offense doesn’t hold on to the ball for long – the O is on the field for under 28 minutes per game, and …

The pass defense. That’s the problem. The Panthers don’t get destroyed, but they’re good for giving up over 250 yards through the air.

Louisiana is managing to do what it must to get things moving. It would like to run, but Levi Lewis and the passing game can balance it all out without a problem … and it will.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana, Northwestern, San Jose State, Ball State, Liberty, Iowa State – to a certain extent – it’s been hard for all of the darlings of 2020 to keep the mojo going in 2021.

Louisiana has made it happen, and all with a bit of an overhaul in a few key spots.

This isn’t always the most dynamic of teams like past versions were, but it keeps getting the job done.

Georgia State has the offense to win this, but it doesn’t have the D. It’ll keep up and make it a fun game, but the Ragin’ Cajuns will pull off another weeknight victory as they take the Sun Belt West title.

It’ll be a fight, though, into the fourth.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Georgia State vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The passing game has been on as part of an offense that’s kicked it all into high gear.

The running game has been terrific over the last five games – hitting 267 yards or more in four of the last five – but Darren Grainger has thrown for 430 yards and six touchdowns with no picks in the last two wins.

Georgia Southern has been better with the passing attack, but that’s because it hasn’t been strong enough at its day job. When the running game is rolling, everything is fine. However, its only two wins came when tearing off 365 yards or more – with over 500 on Arkansas State – and it’s 0-5 when it doesn’t.

The Georgia State defense hasn’t allowed more than 166 rushing yards in any of the last five games and hasn’t allowed more than 258 all year – Army got the one big yardage day. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The Eagles absolutely have to run and keep running and keep running some more to try shortening the game and controlling the clock.

Georgia State’s passing attack really has been better, and that’s an issue – Georgia Southern has the nation’s worst pass defense. However, the Panthers don’t control the clock – the idea of the attack is to go, go, go – and the passing game isn’t all that efficient.

The Eagles don’t have a turnover problem, they should be able to hold the ball for close to 34 minutes, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a good rivalry game that often defies logic and reason, but Georgia State should be able to bomb at will on the beleaguered Georgia Southern secondary.

The Eagles have allowed 330 passing yards or more in five of the seven games and gave up way over 200 in the other two. Even so, for the first time all year Georgia State will play in a relatively tight game – again, rivalry.

Texas State vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

The defense is coming off of two of its better games. It allowed 31 points to both South Alabama and Troy, but fewer yards were allowed in both games than in any game in September.

It’s still not a brick wall, but the pass defense was solid and there was just enough defensive pressure to be a factor.

Georgia State is coming off its best pass rushing game of the season in the win over ULM a few weeks ago, but in general the defense doesn’t bring enough pressure to matter.

The Texas State offense should be able to keep things moving, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Bobcats don’t have anything the Panther defense has to worry about.

There’s no real running game – the 212 yards against South Alabama were an anomaly – and the downfield passing attack isn’t good enough because the line doesn’t provide enough time.

There might not be a whole lot of Georgia State pass rush coming into this, but there’s nothing from a Texas State line that’s generated a mere six sacks. With freshman QB Darren Grainger starting to come into his own …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The big plays should be there against the Texas State secondary.

The Bobcats have allowed teams to hit 74% of their passes over the last two games, but the bigger problem is on the other side with seven giveaways on the season.

Georgia State will capitalize on the two takeaways it’ll get.

Georgia State vs ULM Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

It might have been a rough 1-4 start for the Panthers, but the win over Charlotte was solid and the four losses were all more than acceptable vs. Army, North Carolina, Auburn, and Appalachian State.

They have the playmakers on offense to finally breakout, and they have the experience on the other side to stuff a ULM offense that’s the worst in the nation at converting on third downs.

ULM is also last in the nation in total offense – it has yet to come up with 300 yards in any game, but …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why ULM Will Win

The Warhawks are finding ways to be competitive.

Forget the losses to Kentucky and Coastal Carolina – those are two elite teams there were no-chance games for ULM. The team is great when it comes to turnover margin, the run defense has been able to hold up, and it’s No. 1in the nation in fewest penalties.

Terry Bowden is coaching the heck out of this team.

Georgia State has a turnover margin issue – ULM has to be a +2 to be in this.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State has to keep the mistakes to a minimum. It turned it over multiple times in three of the five games and lost all three.

ULM won’t have enough offense, though, to keep up. Again, this is one of the few games so far that’s in the Georgia State wheelhouse, and it’ll take advantage with a solid day offensively and a big performance from the defensive front.

Appalachian State vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The offense was perfectly balanced last week, and it should be for most of the season from here on.

283 yards on the ground, 283 through the air, and that was enough to get past a terrific Marshall team 31-30 to keep the great start to the season going.

The O might not be perfect – it’s not great at moving the chains on third downs – but it owns the clock, the tempo, and it’s getting big performances out of the best offensive line in the Sun Belt.

Georgia State might have pushed Auburn to the brink last week, but it’s awful at controlling the clock – it’s last in the Sun Belt in time of possession – and the run D isn’t holding up against the better teams like …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia State Will Win

Auburn. Georgia State had that won and caught a bad break late.

Look past the overall stats – like against the run – with Army and North Carolina skewing things a bit. This is a tough team that doesn’t get flagged, takes advantage of its opportunities, and has the ground game to bother an Appalachian State defense that’s good, but isn’t a rock.

At home, Georgia State can put that Auburn game in the rearview mirror by making a massive statement in the Sun Belt race if the D can hold up on third downs.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Georgia State bring the same performance is had last week in Jordan-Hare? That’s asking a lot, mainly because the team on the other side is just that good.

Appalachian State might be the best team in the Sun Belt – yeah, Coastal Carolina, it might be – but this is the game to start proving it.

After a tight first half, the Mountaineers will get there in a good fight be being a wee bit stronger on the lines as the game goes on.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Auburn vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

Well there’s the Georgia State we were all waiting for.

Sort of.

Not being able to stop Army and getting ripped up by North Carolina was part of the deal, but at least the offense was supposed to work. Instead, the Panthers couldn’t get anything going. They stalled against the Black Knights – they never had the ball – and the passing attack didn’t do a thing against the Tar Heels.

And then the running game worked in a solid 20-9 win over Charlotte. There still isn’t enough of a passing game, but the O should provide just enough of a quick push on the ground to be a concern.

But for any of this to work, Auburn needs to have left its head back in State College or on the bus to Baton Rouge. This is a true sandwich game between Penn State and LSU, and with Georgia to come after that.

One problem …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Auburn Will Win

Yeah, the Georgia State running game isn’t going anywhere.

Penn State might have won, but it only ran for 84 yards with 2.5 yards per carry. Stuffing Akron and Alabama State isn’t any big whoop, but the Tiger defensive front under the new coaching staff is just that good.

QB Bo Nix has taken a step forward, America got to see just how good Tank Bigsby is – he ran for 102 yards and two scores against Penn State – and it’s all going to work against a Georgia State defense that’s not making enough big plays – at least it didn’t until it played Charlotte.

The Tiger defensive front will live behind the line.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Auburn might be a bit unfocused, and Georgia State has enough decent parts to at least bring a decent fight for about 20 minutes or so, but don’t expect a letdown overall.

There’s still stuff to work on after the Penn State game and with what’s coming next. The Tigers will get everything right with a big burst just before halftime, and the D will take care of everything else form there.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Charlotte (2-0) vs Georgia State (0-2) Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

The 49ers have been terrific so far at controlling the clock and keeping the chains moving thanks to a big start from the offensive line.

The running game is averaging 230 yards per game, the easy third down conversions are there, and the team is keeping the ball for close to 36 minutes a game. Running well against Gardner-Webb was no big deal, but it managed to get by a tough day from the run defense to come through in the clutch to beat Duke.

So far Georgia State’s defense has been miserable on third downs, it’s only controlling the clock for 24 minutes per game, and it’s not getting enough from the O to keep up.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia State Will Win

The stats are a little bit unfair.

You can’t start the season against Army and North Carolina and expect to be great in the time of possession battle and do much against the run.

The problems have been with the offensive side that hasn’t been able to control anything. Charlotte’s defense is fine, but this is the game to get the ground attack going and expect to finally start producing through the air.

The 49ers couldn’t stop anything on the ground against Duke and had issues against Gardner-Webb. The Panthers should finally start moving the chains a bit at home with all of its options on the ground.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Charlotte success travel to Atlanta?

Again, Georgia State hasn’t had a true look so far considering the opponents, but this is the real test to see just how good it can be.

The problem is the pass rush that isn’t there. The Panthers won’t do enough to get to 49er QB Chris Reynolds, Charlotte will keep the tempo at its level by controlling the clock, and the O line will take over as the game goes on.

North Carolina (0-1) vs Georgia State (0-1) Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

Chalk it up to not being able to hit the knuckleball.

Georgia State is a good team with some solid offensive talent and veteran defenders, but nothing worked in the 43-10 loss to Army. And why? The Black Knight running game held the ball for over 42 minutes and the Panthers couldn’t get into any sort of a groove.

North Carolina will be fired up to have a good performance after the 17-10 loss to Virginia Tech, but it might be slightly looking ahead to an ACC showdown against Virginia, even at home.

Georgia State’s offense should be a whole lot better, but …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why North Carolina Will Win

The North Carolina defense showed up in Blacksburg.

There might have been problems on the offensive side, but the D all but shut down the Hokie running game and allowed fewer than 300 yards of total offense.

And no, the Tar Heel offense isn’t going to sputter like that again.

Sam Howell didn’t have any time to breathe, but he’ll get a little more time this week – Georgia State won’t come up with six sacks – and the timing of the passing game should start to work.

And …

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Tar Heel ground game.

Virginia Tech did a phenomenal job of shutting down the big North Carolina dashes, but there were a few.
