All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

LSU (2-1) vs Mississippi State (2-1) Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

The passing game is working.

This is still a work in progress, and beating McNeese State and Central Michigan hardly prove that the Tigers are back to being at a high level – especially after losing to UCLA to kick things off – but QB Max Johnson has been great. Keeping up in a possible firefight won’t be a problem.

On the other side, it’s hard to generate sacks against the quick-hitting Mississippi State offense, but pressure matters. LSU leads the nation in sacks and tackles for loss – it’s going to make Bulldog QB Will Rogers press a bit for an attack that already doesn’t do anything down the field.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The passing game is working … sort of.

It’s a whole lot of dinking and dunking, and there’s no running game whatsoever to fall back on. While the LSU corners are future NFL starters, the pass defense hasn’t been anything special. It’s not as bad as 2020 – starting out by giving up 632 yards in the opener against MSU – but it’s still hardly a rock.

Rogers threw for 419 yards and three touchdowns in the 31-29 loss to Memphis – HE WAS DOWN on that punt return, and … sorry, but I digress – for an O that dominates the time of possession. That’s helped by a defense that’s doing a fantastic job of getting off the field in a hurry – the Bulldogs lead all SEC teams in third down stops.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Everyone’s going to be into the offensive side, but the defenses are going to be the difference.

Neither one will be dominant – both passing games will work – but Mississippi State will do a better job of controlling the ball and the tempo, and the defensive side will take over when it needs to.

Neither team will run well, and at home, Mississippi State’s short-range passing attack will be a bit more effective.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Notre Dame (3-0) vs Wisconsin (2-1) Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Notre Dame has been just okay. Not great, but okay.

Oh sure, it’s 3-0, but 1) it needed overtime to get by a miserable Florida State team that went in the tank, 2) almost got bit by a Toledo team that got hammered a week later by an awful Colorado State, and 3) last week needed a late score and a few big plays to get by a decent Purdue team.

Wisconsin couldn’t get the O going against Penn State in the opening week loss, but everything looked fine in the follow up blowout over Eastern Michigan. The offense is still a bit of a question mark overall – the passing attack just isn’t sharp – but the ground game is back to being good again after a rough 2020. It’s the other side that’s the killer.

The Badgers have allowed just 66 rushing yards in two games, are No. 2 in the nation in total defense, and they’re getting the D off the field in a hurry – they lead the nation in time of possession, keeping the ball for 41 minutes a game.

Outside of a few big runs, the Irish are struggling on the ground – they’re going to run into a brick wall here. The offensive line is in for a long day – the pass protection has been abysmal – in front of a guy the Badger coaching staff knows all too well.

Former Wisconsin starter Jack Coan is under center for the Irish, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The guy has been great.

Coan was off a bit against Purdue, but he’s averaging over 300 passing yards per game with a slew of deep plays, nine touchdown passes, and the veteran leadership desperately needed in the tight early games.

For all of the issues the Irish have had, they’re tested. They’ve been pushed, and they keep managing to come through with the big plays at just the right times.

Opportunistic, they have yet to come away empty in the red zone – a massive issue for the Badgers in the loss to Penn State – and they’ve been great at forcing takeaways.

It’s this simple – Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz has been awful when pressured, or when he doesn’t get enough time to make the right read. This team has a very, very bad problem of being totally incapable of overcoming turnovers.

Notre Dame wins this if it’s +2 in turnover margin.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

America, welcome to the Wisconsin defense.

The Notre Dame offense isn’t going to do a thing on the ground, but it’s possible to hit the Badger secondary deep. Coan will come up with a few big plays against his old team, but he’s not going to get enough time to do it consistently.

Florida State was able to take over in the second half against the Irish with the running game. Wisconsin has a different style – more brutish than quick-hitting – but it’ll be effective.

The game will be taken out of Mertz’s hands as much as possible, the D with two weeks of rest will pick up the slack for a few empty drives, and in the first meeting since 1964 – a 31-7 Irish win – Wisconsin will make a bit of a statement.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Marshall (2-1) vs Appalachian State (1-2) Game Preview

Why Marshall Will Win

Grant Wells keeps on throwing well.

The Marshall quarterback might have a bit of an interception problem, but he threw for 433 yards in the 42-38 loss to East Carolina. Rasheen Ali ran for 189 yards and three scores, and the offense looked great.

The defense struggled, but ECU has the offense to explode and the Herd will be much, much stronger as the season goes on. This was more of a blip than a  real concern.

The Herd offensive line has been a rock in pass protection so far, and the defensive side has been a killer behind the line with five sacks last week and 16.5 in the three games.

However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Appalachian State beat East Carolina in the opener 33-19.

The Mountaineers had Miami in trouble in a close loss two weeks ago, and it got a nice scrimmage in with a 44-10 win over Elon last week.

Yeah, the Marshall turnovers are a thing.

Wells is just that good a quarterback to wing it around against anyone, but the Herd have lost the ball three times in each of the first three games. The high-powered attack and strong defense usually make up for it, but the mistakes were the difference against ECU.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Be careful here.

It’ll be easy to think ECU-beat-Marshall-and-App-State-beat-ECU and assume this will be a wipeout at home, but this really is a good Herd team that’s good enough to push for the Conference USA title.

If the offense can just chill a wee bit on the mistakes, the firepower is there to pull this off.

This will likely be a lower scoring game than it might seem, and Appalachian State isn’t above giving the ball a way here and there, too.

However, the Mountaineers will be just a bit stronger with their ball security and the defense will hold up against the barrage of passing yards coming their way.

It’ll be a fun one to kickoff the weekend.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Chicago (0-1) vs Cincinnati (1-0) Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Joe Burrow is healthy, seemingly back to normal, and he has receivers who can catch.

Matthew Stafford lit up the Bears for 321 yards and three touchdowns with big plays doing in the secondary in the Ram win on Sunday night, and now it’s Burrow’s turn after a solid 261-yard, two-touchdown effort in the overtime win over Minnesota.

A 200-yard passing machine, Burrow and first round pick Ja’Marr Chase hooked for a 50-yard touchdown, he came up with a few other big throws, and it should all keep going against a Chicago defense that didn’t generate a lick of pressure last week.

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Chicago Will Win

The running game worked.

That’s not a given for a Chicago offense that didn’t do much of anything until late last year. The LA Ram defensive front was supposed to be impenetrable, but David Montgomery ran well, Andy Dalton was hit too much, and the offense wasn’t totally miserable.

Everyone wants to see Justin Fields, but Dalton was fine. Not amazing, not special, but fine. He didn’t get a whole lot of help from the defense, though, and he has to start taking more chances down the field.

By the way, Kirk Cousins hit the Bengals for 351 yards.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

The Chicago defense was able to hold down the LA rushing attack but had way too many breakdowns in the secondary. That will slow down just a wee bit.

Burrow will connect on a few big plays like he did last week, but the Bears will get a few more plays out of Fields, Dalton will continue to be serviceable, and it’ll be a grinding win with the D playing a whole lot better.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Cleveland (0-1) vs Houston (1-0) Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Lost a bit in the fog of the first NFL Sunday was that Houston wasn’t totally awful.

Tyrod Taylor didn’t make the mistakes Trevor Lawrence did in the 37-21 Texan win, Mark Ingram gave the team a ground game, and the offense had an explosive element.

It’s a different animal this week against a Cleveland team that won’t make the same mistakes, but it got banged up on the offensive front in the loss to Kansas City. The D was awful on third downs, the two turnovers were a killer – ending with a Baker Mayfield game-killing pick, and …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Cleveland Will Win

The Browns ran the ball, and they’re going to do it again.

They’ll have one of the best ground attacks all season long – the 153 yards and close to six yards per carry in the 33-29 loss just scratched the surface.

Houston did a whole lot of things right in the win over the Jaguars, but it got hit a bit too hard by Carlos Hyde and the running game, and it didn’t generate enough pressure in the backfield. Just assume that Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt combine for close to 125 yards, minimum.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Cleveland did everything right last week except actually win the game. But Houston isn’t Kansas City.

Houston did almost everything right last week and won shockingly easily. But Cleveland isn’t Jacksonville.

Mayfield won’t have to press and the offense won’t have to work to keep up. Hand it off, let the D get a big day out of the great ends, hand it off, repeat.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Los Angeles Rams (1-0) vs Indianapolis (0-1) Game Preview

Why Indianapolis Will Win

If Chicago could run on the Rams …
It was one of the justifications by the Bears for not playing Justin Fields more – the Los Angeles defensive front might ruin his career in Week 1. But the miserable Chicago offensive line didn’t get totally destroyed, and it actually provided a bit of a push for over five yards per carry and a nice day from David Montgomery.

Now it’s Jonathan Taylor’s turn.

He did everything in the loss last week to Seattle but score and bust out a big run. He couldn’t shake loose, but he still ran for 56 yards and led the team with six catches for 60 yards.

The Colts held on to the ball seemingly for forever – close to 36 minutes, but …

It’s not like the Rams need a whole lot of time to operate. They only had the ball for close to 25 minutes.

Lost in the 34-14 win over Chicago was how close that thing was late in the third quarter. It was 20-14 Rams after Fields ran for a score, but the D clamped down and the O scored 14 unanswered points on two solid drives to put it away.

That came after two mega-throws from Matthew Stafford earlier in the game for touchdowns.

What’s Going To Happen

The Los Angeles defensive front was more than fine against Chicago. Aaron Donald might have been too silent, but the team was never out of control in any way.

The one big issue for the Bears – besides getting hit for two home runs – was the inability to do anything down the field. Andy Dalton was fine, but he dinked and dunked without making any big plays. Last week against Seattle, Carson Wentz was fine, but he dinked and dunked without making any big plays.

The Colt running game won’t get it done.
