Joe Burrow is healthy, seemingly back to normal, and he has receivers who can catch.

Matthew Stafford lit up the Bears for 321 yards and three touchdowns with big plays doing in the secondary in the Ram win on Sunday night, and now it’s Burrow’s turn after a solid 261-yard, two-touchdown effort in the overtime win over Minnesota.

A 200-yard passing machine, Burrow and first round pick Ja’Marr Chase hooked for a 50-yard touchdown, he came up with a few other big throws, and it should all keep going against a Chicago defense that didn’t generate a lick of pressure last week.

Why Chicago Will Win

The running game worked.

That’s not a given for a Chicago offense that didn’t do much of anything until late last year. The LA Ram defensive front was supposed to be impenetrable, but David Montgomery ran well, Andy Dalton was hit too much, and the offense wasn’t totally miserable.

Everyone wants to see Justin Fields, but Dalton was fine. Not amazing, not special, but fine. He didn’t get a whole lot of help from the defense, though, and he has to start taking more chances down the field.

By the way, Kirk Cousins hit the Bengals for 351 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

The Chicago defense was able to hold down the LA rushing attack but had way too many breakdowns in the secondary. That will slow down just a wee bit.

Burrow will connect on a few big plays like he did last week, but the Bears will get a few more plays out of Fields, Dalton will continue to be serviceable, and it’ll be a grinding win with the D playing a whole lot better.

The Browns ran the ball, and they’re going to do it again.

They’ll have one of the best ground attacks all season long – the 153 yards and close to six yards per carry in the 33-29 loss just scratched the surface.

Houston did a whole lot of things right in the win over the Jaguars, but it got hit a bit too hard by Carlos Hyde and the running game, and it didn’t generate enough pressure in the backfield. Just assume that Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt combine for close to 125 yards, minimum.

It’s not like the Rams need a whole lot of time to operate. They only had the ball for close to 25 minutes.

Lost in the 34-14 win over Chicago was how close that thing was late in the third quarter. It was 20-14 Rams after Fields ran for a score, but the D clamped down and the O scored 14 unanswered points on two solid drives to put it away.

That came after two mega-throws from Matthew Stafford earlier in the game for touchdowns.

The Los Angeles defensive front was more than fine against Chicago. Aaron Donald might have been too silent, but the team was never out of control in any way.

The one big issue for the Bears – besides getting hit for two home runs – was the inability to do anything down the field. Andy Dalton was fine, but he dinked and dunked without making any big plays. The Bills did everything right but win the game.

They outgained Pittsburgh by 121 yards in the 23-16 home loss, they ran well enough, and they did a great job moving the chains. There were too many penalties, the D didn’t come up with any takeaways, and the O had a rough time putting the biscuit in the basket when it got in scoring range, but they were hardly bad.

On the flip side of that was Miami. It couldn’t run against New England, it had a hard time putting the game away, and Tua Tagovailoa was outplayed by Mac Jones, and then … it won.

The Buffalo defensive front should keep the Dolphins from doing anything on the ground, and while Tagovailoa pulled off the victory, he’s going to have to prove he can handle the pressure that’s coming.

The pressure is all on the Buffalo side of the field.

It’s not like the Dolphins don’t have to take care of home, and of course pulling off the win would be massive early on in the division race, but after last week’s loss the Bills might try to press right away to make up for all of the missed opportunities against the Steelers.

Tagovailoa won’t have Will Fuller to throw to – he’s out with a personal issue after being suspended for the first game – but Jaylen Waddle quickly looked like a keeper, the backs turned into nice safety valves, and there’s going to be a nice blend of safe and short with deep and dangerous.
Miami has the weapons to mix it up.

Buffalo will win, but it won’t be emphatic thumping it might be looking for.

If the Miami offensive line can hold serve and the running game can be just okay, Tagovailoa will get hot for stretches and keep pressing. But the Dolphin secondary that got hit for too many midrange plays against the Patriots will be in for a monster day from Josh Allen. He won’t throw 51 times again, but he’ll be more effective in the red zone.

The new guy was more than fine.

New England managed to lose to Miami 17-16 even though it got a terrific game out of Mac Jones, 100 rushing yards out of Damien Harris, and a strong defensive day that held Miami to nothing in the fourth quarter.

The problem were the stalled drives – too many field goals and just one touchdown. In this, just don’t screw up and let the defensive front do the rest.

The Carolina defensive front will be a problem all year long, and the Jets couldn’t handle it in the 19-14 loss. They were in the game, but Zach Wilson was sacked six times and there wasn’t a lick of a running attack to help the cause.

The kid was alright.

Wilson didn’t get the win, and he’s going to need a whole lot of seasoning and time to sharpen up, but he was under pressure by the Panthers all game long and he still managed to spread the ball around well and come up with a whole slew of big plays.

Yes, New England was fine against Miami, but it wasn’t sharp enough. There were too many penalties, two turnovers – there should’ve been a few more – and it didn’t do nearly enough considering it had the ball for almost 37 minutes and controlled the game.

Ball control, let Mac Jones make the throws that are there, rely on the ground game to pound away, and make Wilson have to push every time he gets his chances. The limited number of drives will create a sense of urgency, and the mistakes will come.

The 49ers had the three-foot putt made against the Lions with a big lead and everything working offensively, and then the secondary took the rest of the afternoon off in the 41-33 win.

On the plus side, Jimmy Garoppolo was solid – 314 yards with plenty of big plays and no picks – and out of a backfield with seemingly 41 injured runners, Elijah Mitchell took over with a strong 104-yard, one-score day.

Philadelphia had a surprising walk in the park against Atlanta with a 32-6 road win.

Jalen Hurts was terrific – at the very least, he was steady and didn’t throw any picks – and the defense made Matt Ryan look ridiculous with constant press while not giving him anywhere to throw.

There were WAY too many penalties overall, but the D that allowed just two field goals should be able to hold down a San Francisco offense that really does have running back depth issues.

These are professional athletes who are built to handle anything, but the 49ers had to play Week 1 in Detroit, go home, and now they have to fly across the country to play in Philadelphia. Yeah, boo hoo, it’s just a plane ride, but if you buy into the whole circadian rhythm thing, the ball get kicked off 10 am San Francisco time.

The bigger issue will be an Eagle defense that’s about to have its second straight strong performance.

Hurts will throw two picks that keep the Niners around – the San Francisco defense will generate pressure from the start – but he’ll also run well enough for the ground attack to average over five yards per carry.

Expect a good one.

Pittsburgh should be 0-1, but here we are.

It was as if the Steelers fell into the 23-16 win over Buffalo.

However, for all the problems, the defense managed to do a whole lot of bending but rarely broke as the Bills came up short on drive after drive – managing just one touchdown.

It shouldn’t seem like this should matter, but that was an early game win for Pittsburgh, and the Raiders just went through a war – that was like a game-and-a-half – on Monday night.

RB Josh Jacobs is out, the team had to gut it through a whole lot of tough plays, and it’s hardly going to be fresh even though it’s only Week 2.

This will be the Najee Harris game.

Again, Baltimore was relatively bottled up when Jackson wasn’t being Jackson, but even with it’s ragtag bunch of running backs – after all the injuries this offseason – it was still able to move relatively effectively on the ground.

Pittsburgh doesn’t have Baltimore’s offensive line, but Harris will take over for stretches as he helps the O control the game against a Raider team that will hit a wall early in the fourth.

Here comes the Carolina pass rush.

The New Orleans offensive front was brilliant against Green Bay – no sacks allowed, no tackles for loss – but now it has to deal with a Carolina pass rush that was all over Wilson with six sacks, and was fantastic against the run.

The Panthers have the playmakers up front on D – Winston won’t be nearly as comfortable this week – Sam Darnold is a more-than-serviceable veteran quarterback as long as Christian McCaffrey is back to being Christian McCaffrey.

Just how much will the New Orleans covid issues matter? Seven coaches will be in the protocol, but there doesn’t appear to be a big problem with the players.

It’s just another thing for the Saints to deal with.

A whole lot is being made of the Saints having to be road warriors after Hurricane Ida, but that also might have galvanized and sharpened up the team – at least that’s how it played against Green Bay.

Teddy Bridgewater is better than you think.

He’s not Patrick Mahomes, and you’re not going to win a Super Bowl if he’s your starting quarterback, but he can move an offense efficiently and effectively against the okay defenses – like the Giant D – and he was able to spread it around just fine in a 27-13 win last week.
The Denver defense did the rest, stalling the New York running game and keeping the game in check until Bridgewater and the offense could put it away.

Jacksonville is going through the process.

This is still the team that had the No. 1 overall draft pick, and it’s not going to be consistent enough on either side of the ball to pull this off at home if the Bronco defense can apply pressure and force Trevor Lawrence to make mistakes.

As long as Bridgewater and the Denver offense doesn’t turn the ball over, it’ll all be fine.

Why Jacksonville Will Win

Just turn it loose.

There’s no Denver running game to worry about – there was one great run by Melvin Gordon against the Giants, and that was it – and taking an injured Jerry Jeudy away from Bridgewater matters.

Lawrence will make mistakes, but he showed against Houston the upside and potential once the game starts to slow down. Until then, he’s going to bomb away and keep pushing.

The Jaguars have the receiver weapons, and Carlos Hyde and James Robinson aren’t bad backs if they can get the ball more. The team got down so fast that the running game was abandoned – that can’t happen this week.

It might be a home game, and Jacksonville will be stronger, but losing to the 2021 Houston Texans by 16 isn’t a sign that all is going well early on.

It won’t be a scintillating performance, but Denver will get the D working early on, the team will be +2 in turnover margin, and it’ll be a 2-0 start.

The Viking passing game will continue to be great.

The pass rush was fantastic in the 27-24 overtime loss to Cincinnati – generating five sacks and enough plays behind the line to matter – but the fun was through the air as Kirk Cousins put together a solid day.

He didn’t get the win, but he threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns without a pick. If KJ Osborn can keep producing – he caught seven passes for 76 yards – to go along with Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson, the Vikings will be an even bigger problem when Cousins get time.

Why Arizona Will Win

Kyler Murray. He was fantastic against Tennessee, and he didn’t even run all that much.

The offense roared on the road with 38 points in the first three quarters, the receiving corps was great, and the defense did the rest.

Derrick Henry was bottled up for just 58 yards, and now the Cardinals get to focus on a Dalvin Cook coming off a tough day against the Bengals. Cook kept getting the ball and he got a score, but he didn’t go anywhere.

Basically, at home, it’s Kirk Cousins or … Kyler Murray.

The Vikings have the offense to rise up and rock in a shootout, and that pass rush can turn the lights out on a drive in a hurry, but the secondary is still really, really suspect.

Minnesota worked on the defensive backs this offseason, but they’re still a problem. They gave up too many plays to Joe Burrow and Cincinnati last week, and this week it’ll be Murray who bombs away.
