Equipment companies love to bring new gear to PGA Tour events in Las Vegas because it is close to many brands’ headquarters in Southern California and the weather is dependably good during the Shriners Children’s Open, making golf at TPC Summerlin akin to playing in a dome.

Cleveland Golf has brought some new wedges to this year’s event, referring to them simply as “CG Proto,” but the clubs appear to be labeled RTX Tour Rack.

The Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore wedges were released in January 2023, and have been popular with many of the brand’s staff players, and with the company often updating its wedges on two-year product cycles, Cleveland appears to be introducing its next generation of wedges to tour players now.

Historically, Tour Rack wedges from Cleveand have been made using raw steel instead of a chrome finish. Raw steel is preferred by many tour players because it reduces glare and, if special grind work is needed, the steel will rust evenly, along with the rest of the wedge head after being exposed to the air and to water. Grinding on a chrome wedge creates a raw area that will rust while the chrome portion of the club remains shiny.

A close-up look at images of the toe of some of the wedges shows the words “Full” and “Mid,” which likely refers to the amount of bounce in the sole.

Cleveland has not released any official details about the CG Proto or RTZ wedges, but historically the company makes new equipment available in late January or February, after the PGA Merchandise Show concludes in mid-Janaury.

When it comes to selecting the right irons, Ping offers plenty of choices that cater to wide a range of golfers, from elite ball strikers who can benefit from the control and feel of the Blueprint T and the Blueprint S to high-handicap golfers who can take advantage of the forgiveness of the G730.

Two popular options in the middle of Ping’s iron lineup are the G430 and i530. Both clubs were designed using advanced technologies and materials, and there is some overlap in the type of players who might gravitate to these irons, but they serve different needs on the course. So, let’s break down how the G430 and i530 are similar, how they differ, and discuss which players might find the most benefit from each set.

Construction and technology

Released in 2023, the G430 irons feature cast 17-4 stainless steel heads htat have been given a unique heat treatment that strengthens the steel. That allowed designers to make the hitting area thinner and lighter. Ping also lowered the center of gravity (CG) by adding a tungsten weight in the heel and a tungsten screw to the toe. That added mass makes the G430 less likely to twist on off-center hits for increased consistency.

The G430 was also created with a new back badge called PurFlex. It has seven different pieces that deliver varying levels of stiffness. Ping’s engineers learned that dividing the badge instead of uses a single large piece, it encouraged more face flex while still absorbing excessive vibrations to improve sound and feel.

Released in 2024, the i530 has a hollow-body design that is similar to the design of Ping’s metalwoods. The thin, forged C300 maraging steel face is welded to the 17-7 stainless steel body, which creates a hollow chamber inside the head. This hollow-body design allows the hitting area to flex more efficiently at the moment of impact, so golfers can generate more ball speed and distance.

On the inner-facing side of the face, Ping added a polymer piece that soaks up vibrations without inhibiting face flex or dropping ball speed. In addition to weights in the heel and toe, an internal mass pad helps to lower the CG location.

Ping also designed the i530 with MicroMax grooves, so the hitting area is more tightly packed with grooves to help the irons generate more spin.

Both the G430 and the i530 have Ping’s Hydropearl 2.0 finish, a technology that helps to keep water off the face for more consistency.

Size and performance

The Ping G430 has a longer blade length than the i530, to go along with a slightly thicker topline and wider sole. Working in complement with the addd weight in the heel and toe, the added size helps to boost the moment of inertia (MOI) of the G430 and make it more stable on mis-hit shots. The larger size also helps to lower the CG location and encourage a higher ball flight.

The i530 has a more-compact size than the G430, with a shorter blade length, thinner topline and narrower sole. The extra weight added in the heel and toe boost the MOI, but in the case of the i530, Ping wanted more stability without increasing the size.

The lofts of the G430 and i530 are identical, with the 5-irons at 22 degrees and the 9-irons at 37 degrees. However, the standard pitching wedge loft of the G430 is 41 degrees while the i530 pitching wedge comes standard at 42 degrees. Both sets are available in Ping’s Power Spec, which features stronger lofts, and Retro Spec, which has weaker lofts.

Who are the G430 and i530 for?

The best way to find the irons that are right for you is to work with a custom fitter who has a launch monitor and hit shots with lots of different head and shaft combinations.

The G430 is for mid-to-high handicappers who want help getting the ball in the air and keeping it there. The larger head size, added perimeter weighting, and forgiving face make it ideal for golfers who prioritize consistency over shaping shots. If you shoot in the high 80s and 90s and want irons that can launch the ball high, reduce mishit penalties, and boost confidence from anywhere on the course, the G430 is something to consider.

The i530 falls squarely into the better-player’s distance category. Its compact size, thinner topline and reduced offset will remind golfers who shoot in the high 70s and low 80s of muscleback blades and better-player irons they have used in the past, but the hollow-body design will generate more ball speed and distance than solid-body clubs made for low-handicap golfers.

The forged face and extra spin from the MicroMax grooves should also help skilled players hit draws, fades and other shots when they need to work the ball around the course.

2025 Titleist Pro V1, Pro V1x debut this week at Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas

New golf balls: Players can use new balls from Titleist this week on Tour.

For decades, Las Vegas has been a place where fortunes can be made, and many professional golfers have amassed their fortunes using a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball. On Monday, as pros arrived at the practice area at TPC Summerlin to prepare for this week’s Shriners Children’s Open, they were greeted by white boxes containing the newest versions of Titleist’s flagship golf balls: the 2025 Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

While Titleist is keeping details of the new designs under wraps, the seeding process that started Monday is the first sentence in the next chapter of the Pro V1 story – a story that began in research and development offices in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, but truly became a page-turner in Las Vegas.

Pro V1 history

The Pro V1 was introduced in October 2000 at the PGA Tour’s Invensys Classic in Las Vegas, but Titleist had been developing the ball for about five years, trying to blend the short-game spin and control of wound balata-covered balls with the distance of two-piece, solid-core balls.

The Pro V1’s large rubber core, firm mantle layer and soft urethane cover created more distance off the tee, consistency with irons and spin control with wedges for players in prototype testing. At the Invensys Classic that week in 2000, Titleist hoped the seeding process would convince 20 to 25 players to use the ball, and Mac Fritz, then senior vice president of tour promotion, brought 60 dozen golf balls to the tournament.

That turned out to be an underestimation, as 47 players immediately switched to the Pro V1, including tournament winner Billy Andrade and runner-up Phil Mickelson.

The name “Pro V1” was initially just an interim stamp for balls submitted to the USGA for conformance testing – not a permanent name. The ball was made to replace the Titleist Professional (Pro), and the mantle layer was created using veneer (V). The number 1 indicated that it was the first version submitted to the USGA.

In the weeks that followed, the buzz surrounding the Pro V1 grew and demand swelled, prompting Titleist to move the ball’s retail release forward from March 2001 to December 2000.

Within four months of Andrade’s win in Las Vegas, the Pro V1 became the best-selling golf ball in the marketplace – a position it has held ever since.

Hello, Pro V1x

Titleist introduced the first Pro V1x in 2003 as a companion ball to the Pro V1. While the Pro V1 has always been a three-piece ball, the Pro V1x has, from the start, been a four-piece ball with a dual-core design that offers a firmer feel, higher flight and slightly more short-game spin than the Pro V1.

The updated, third-generation Pro V1 was also released in 2003, and Titleist has followed a two-year product cycle for updating both models ever since.

Pro V1: Today’s most-played ball

Six months after Andrade’s victory in Las Vegas, the Pro V1 was the most-played ball at the 2001 Masters, and Retief Goosen used it to win the 2001 U.S. Open.

Since 2001, the Pro V1 has been the most-played ball in every men’s major championship. Last season, 70 percent of the golf balls played on the PGA Tour and 76 percent of the balls played on the LPGA were either a Pro V1 or Pro V1x. Among elite amateurs the percentages are even higher: 84 percent at the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur, 89 percent at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship and 92 percent at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship.

What to expect from the new Pro V1, Pro V1x

While Titleist has not revealed specific details about the 2025 versions of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x, players and fans will be watching the Shriners Open and monitoring social media for any insights into the performance differences experienced by pros in Las Vegas. Historically, each new iteration of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x brings refinements in distance, greenside control and overall feel, rather than radical changes.

For instance, the 2021 models featured a redesigned aerodynamic package, with the Pro V1 carrying a 388-dimple pattern and the Pro V1x featuring a 348-dimple count. Titleist later explained that the new patterns generated more consistency and longer flight. In 2023, Titleist introduced High Gradient Core (Pro V1) and High Gradient Dual Core (Pro V1x) technologies to further reduce spin off the tee while maintaining control in the short game.

When will 2025 Pro V1, Pro V1x be in stores?

If tradition holds, after the new Pro V1 and Pro V1x are seeded on the PGA Tour, they will be made available to the public in January 2025, likely shortly after the PGA Merchandise Show scheduled for Jan. 21-24.

The Deep Dive:
After golfers win major championships or accomplish something unique, brands often celebrate by creating social media posts, developing posters for pro shops, and sometimes offering replicas of players’ clubs.

That’s what Callaway is doing with the release of limited-edition Apex TCB irons. These clubs are nearly identical to the set Xander Schauffele used throughout 2024 and had in his bag when he won the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club and the British Open at Royal Troon.

The Apex TCB irons debuted in 2021, and Schauffele has been playing them since that year. Jon Rahm used them to win the 2021 U.S. Open and 2023 Masters, and Sam Burns has been a TCB player for the last few seasons as well. However, the set Schauffele had in his bag this season is different from the clubs used by Rahm and Burns.

Apex TCB: Materials and Tech

Like their predecessors released in 2021, the 2024 limited-edition Apex TCB irons (TCB stands for tour cavity-back) are forged using 1025 carbon steel for a soft feel at impact. However, unlike the 2021 version, these clubs come with a raw steel finish. In addition to being anti-glare, the raw steel will rust and darken in tone over time and with exposure to water. Schauffele has been using raw steel irons for the past several seasons.

Aesthetically, the limited-edition Apex TCBs match the recently released Callaway Apex CB, Apex Ai200, and Apex Ai300. They feature a modest cavity-back design to boost perimeter weighting and provide a small amount of stability. A tungsten weight screwed into the back of each club helps lower the center of gravity while allowing fitters to easily change the swing weight of the Apex TCB based on the length and player preferences. However, the Apex TCB has a shorter blade length, thinner topline, and less offset than the other Apex irons.

Callaway Apex TCB, 10-iron?

In another nod to the 2024 PGA Championship and British Open winner, the limited-edition Apex TCB irons will come standard as a set running from 4-iron to 10-iron. That’s not a typo. Instead of having a club marked as a pitching wedge, Schauffele has been using a 46-degree iron labeled “10 iron,” so that’s how the pitching wedge is labeled in this set.

These irons are clearly built for elite players, and Callaway is calling them limited editions, but they may be a peek at something the company intends to offer in 2025. Cosmetically, the limited-edition Apex TCB fits perfectly with the recently released Apex irons (Apex CB, Apex Ai200, Apex Ai300). So, if Callaway wants to update a three-year-old better player’s iron, we could see something similar to these limited-edition irons next season, but they would almost certainly be released with a chrome finish.
