Duke vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devils got back on track after the loss at Florida State a few weeks ago with a steady run of good defensive performances and a whole lot of rebounds.

You don’t beat North Carolina without being able to being able to hang around on the boards, and Duke has been dominating with 42 or more in three of the last four games including a whopping 33 on the offensive glass over the last two games.

It’s not going to get that against the Tar Heels, but it”ll hold its own.

North Carolina shoots well, but it doesn’t play a ton of defense, it doesn’t force mistakes, and it’s in trouble when it doesn’t get second chance points and save its D by getting the board.

What happens when the Tar Heels don’t rock in rebounding margin? They get obliterated by Kentucky, lose by 17 to Tennessee, and get dropped by Purdue. However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why North Carolina Will Win

The threes are dropping for the Tar Heels.

It’s a good deal when you can hit the offensive boards. Take lots of shots from the outside, rebound the misses, score from there. But lately, they’ve been on with ten or more threes in three of the last four games – all wins.

Duke’s defense is fantastic at guarding the three, but can it also make sure it doesn’t give up easy points on the inside when it’s worrying about the outside?

On the other end, Duke hasn’t been on from three lately. Overall it’s been fine this season, but it couldn’t hit a thing in the low-scoring win over Notre Dame and haven’t hit 40% from the outside in four of the last six games.

North Carolina doesn’t have to win this game from the outside, but if it outshoots Duke from three, look out.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

You think Mike Krzyzewski is going to lose his final game in Chapel Hill?

Duke hasn’t been quite as sharp overall as he might like, but North Carolina is hardly consistent from the field over the last several games.

Again, Duke will get the job done on the boards, it’ll be better overall from the field in the second half, and it’ll be Duke-North Carolina. It’ll be a fight that comes down to a few late possessions.

The Blue Devils will will keep struggling on the free throw line to make this interesting, but they’ll survive.

Duke vs Notre Dame Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devils didn’t play all that well against Louisville and still won by nine on the road.

They couldn’t hit free throws and allowed too many threes, but they won by rebounding like mad. They’ve come up with over 40 boards in two of the last three games, and now they’re going against a team that can’t do anything on the glass.

The Fighting Irish are among the worst teams in the ACC on the boards. There’s size, but not enough of an inside presence on blocked shots and the defense doesn’t force mistakes.

That’s not going to work against a team that moves the ball around way too well. But …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish might be having a whole slew of problems, and yet they’ve won four straight – including over Louisville and Virginia – because they’re shooting the lights out.

They hit 15 threes against Louisville, 11 against NC State, and they have the ability bomb their way into a win.

The early season issues appear to be done – they’re doing better at finding the open shot and the threes are dropping – and it’s showing with a streak of ten wins in the last 11 games.

No one in the ACC is hitting more threes per game, they’re doing a great job at not allowing teams to get to the free throw line, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Notre Dame really pull this off?

It can’t rebound with Duke, who’s getting balanced scoring when Paolo Banchero isn’t taking over, but it’ll make this a grind.

The Blue Devils will pull this off – the three-point defense is still the best in the ACC despite the recent issues – but it’ll have to hang on late.

Duke vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Louisville is having a few problems.

It lost five of its last six games, and there’s no real rhyme or reason to it other than the team just isn’t playing well.

One night it can’t get to the free throw line. Another night it’s not hitting from three. Another night it’s having turnover issues. More than anything else, though, the key is having a good presence on the inside and get ti the free throw line as much as possible.

Nine free throws. that’s how many the Cardinals took in the losses to Notre Dame and Virginia. Don’t get aggressive, don’t get to the basket, don’t get hacked, and Louisville doesn’t win.

Duke is 13th in the nation in fewest fouls committed. Be shocked if Louisville has ten made free throws.

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals have to win on the boards.

There are a whole lot of misses, the team isn’t great at shooting inside or out, and it’s not moving the ball around well enough to make things easier. However, it’s good on the defensive boards and it has to hang around inside and create enough second chance points to matter.

Duke is terrific on the boards – Paolo Banchero, Wendell Moore, and Mark Williams eat up everything – but Louisville has the ability to attack the glass with all the parts, led by Malik Williams in the middle.

Ohio State and Florida State were able to come up with two of the Duke losses by winning in the rebounding margin, so …

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Louisville won’t be able to do enough even if it does win the rebounding battle.

It just isn’t sharp enough from the field, Duke isn’t going to foul enough to matter – Clemson shot just one free throw in the loss a few games ago – and it should come up with a strong performance after being a tad shaky lately.

Duke had problems with Clemson and Florida State after giving up too many threes. That’s not going to be a problem in KFC Yum!

Miami vs Duke Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

Now’s the time for the offense to have some fun.

The Hurricanes scratched and clawed their way through the season, and now they’re bowl eligible after the win in the bad weather against Virginia Tech. Game after game after game has been tough.

Duke shouldn’t be anything more than a chance to put up some big numbers.

The Blue Devil defense is the second-worst in college football, allowing 517 yards per game on the year – and it’s getting worse.

Virginia, Wake Forest, Pitt, Virginia Tech, and Louisville all came up with 500 yards or more. Wake Forest and Louisville were coming close to 700, and Pitt easily came up with 600.

There’s not enough pressure in the backfield, the pass defense gives up too many yards in chunks, and the run D is getting hammered game after game, allowing 220 yards or more in each of the last four.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Duke Will Win

Yeah, the Duke defense has been miserable and can’t seem to come up with any one thing it does all that well, but it also went against a whole lot of amazing offenses.

It wasn’t totally awful in the loss to Georgia Tech, it held Northwestern down for about 45 minutes, and Miami doesn’t run well enough – it hasn’t hit 100 yards in four of the last five games – to matter.

It’s the final game of the year, it’s Senior Day, and it’s a chance to come up with something positive after losing every game since late September.

Miami turns the ball over way too much, the offensive line hasn’t been all that great, and the secondary can be roasted, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Duke’s hot start won’t be enough.

The Blue Devils will be inspired, and they’ll come out with a few good scoring drives, but Miami will settle in.

By the middle of the second quarter this will completely flip, the Hurricane passing game will take over, and it’ll be another day when the Duke D allows more than 500 yards.

Louisville vs Duke Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

It’s been a strange and tough run for a Louisville team trying to get bowl eligible, but this is when the offense has to take off.

Duke’s offense has been spotty, but it’s the defensive side that’s the true disaster, especially against anyone who can throw.

Louisville QB Malik Cunningham is coming off this best game of the year in the team’s best performance of the season. He hit 73% of his passes with four scores in the 41-3 win over Syracuse, and now he goes against the nation’s second-worst pass defense.

The Blue Devils are giving up over 300 passing yards per game, and Louisville should come close. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Duke Will Win

Louisville’s defense has improved, but it’s about to get run on.

Duke’s ground game hasn’t been able to keep the production going after a great first half of the season, but the offense pushed for close to 200 yards in last week’s loss to Virginia Tech.

The offense is trying to find something that works for the passing game, getting freshman Riley Leonard some meaningful work – he can run a little bit. Louisville’s secondary is just leaky enough to give up over 200 yards. Duke has the parts, they just have to work.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Duke’s offensive parts aren’t working because the lines aren’t getting the job done.

Louisville will get up fast, it’ll turn to the offensive line to take over – the Cardinal front five is good in pass protection – and it’ll be on cruise control in the fourth quarter.

Duke vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The offense is still okay.

It might have problems scoring, but the O is moving just enough to at least get to more than 300 yards per game without too much of a problem. In this, it’s all about cranking things up against a Virginia Tech team that’s having big-time issues all the way around.

The Hokies have lost four of their last five games thanks to a painfully inconsistent offense, an absent passing game, and without enough timely plays from the defense to make up for the other problems.

However, if you think the Virginia Tech defense has been a tad off …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Virginia Will Win

Duke’s defense has completely fallen off the map.

It struggled throughout the first part of the year, but the offense was able to make up for it with a whole lot of pop from the running game. And then came the teams that could throw.

Granted, everyone’s having problems with Wake Forest, Pitt, and Virginia, but all three took target practice against the Blue Devils, combining for well over 1,800 yards in the last three games.

Virginia Tech might be coming off a miserable 17-3 loss to Boston College, and the passing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards in four of the last five games, but the running game has shown enough to work from time to time.

This is the game for the O to have some fun.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The Hokies have improved their defense just a bit over the last few games, and that shouldn’t be the issue this week.

Can they finally show some offensive pop? Duke has the worst defense in the ACC, and the offense has scored seven points or fewer in three of the last five games.

If you’re getting shut out by Virginia and only come up with seven against Wake Forest and North Carolina, things aren’t going all that well. The Virginia Tech defense will take over.
