The Commodores get a week off before playing Ole Miss from the West followed up by a date with Auburn. That’s about as nice as it gets in the SEC.

That means they miss Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M. With all the games against the East still around, the conference schedule isn’t that bad going to Ole Miss kicks off a rough run of road games in three of the last four.

There are back-to-back road games just that one time at the end – Stanford and UCLA. With that the team has to take care of things at home with an upset somewhere. The game changes with a big performance against Auburn or Oregon State or Washington State – the Bears need to take down at least one of those.

No Stanford. This year, that’s the Pac-12 team you want to face. The Utes took it down 42-7 in 2022.

The spacing is also a plus. There isn’t a run of three road games in four weeks like several Pac-12 teams have to deal with, and with the road game against the Ducks, Oregon State doesn’t leave the state after November 4th.

In one of the more unfortunate scheduling quirks of of 2022, USC was able to miss both Oregon and Washington. That was a huge part of the puzzle to get the Trojans within a hamstring of the College Football Playoff.

The two other big boys are back on the slate now in back-to-back weeks in November. That stinks, but missing both Oregon State – who was a nasty out in 2022 – and Washington State isn’t a bad deal.

Yeah, having Oregon and Washington back on the schedule is a big deal, but … boo hoo. If USC really is improved enough defensively to be back in the Pac-12 Championship and CFP mix, there’s no real problem with the conference slate.

There are only four Pac-12 road games and five away dates overall. Washington has to come to LA, UCLA has to make the trip down the road, and best of all, Utah is a home game. Three of the conference road games against Cal, Arizona State, and Colorado are about as manageable as they get. The date at Oregon isn’t.

San Jose State, Nevada, Stanford, a week off, at Arizona State, at Colorado, Arizona. That means USC plays one team that went bowling in 2022 before the middle of October, and San Jose State is hardly anything to get into a twist over.

However, there’s a run of three road games in four weeks, and the end of the fun is Notre Dame. The finishing kick is rough with that date against the Irish, Utah, at Cal, Washington, at Oregon, UCLA, but is USC is that good, getting back to the Pac-12 Championship at 11-1 is possible.

With Washington and Oregon back in the mix, though – along with the road game at Notre Dame – it might not be probable.

Going down the road to USC isn’t exactly a road trip, but having to open up the conference season at Utah is a bear. In all there are five conference road trips. Arizona – a massive loss for UCLA last year – is even better this season and it’s in Tucson.

That’s tough, going to Oregon State is even nastier, and while Stanford shouldn’t be a problem, it’s a part of a rough run of three road games in four weeks.

UCLA didn’t exactly extend itself last year in non-conference play – Bowling Green, Alabama State, South Alabama – and there aren’t any Power Five programs among this year’s crop. Coastal Carolina is interesting and going to San Diego State is dangerous, but if UCLA is any sort of a player this year, those two have to be wins.

Again, no Oregon and no Washington means the world – that’s a beauty of a parting gift before going off to the Big Ten. It’s a slate built to push for ten wins if everything reloads in a hurry, but those three road games against USC, Utah, and Oregon State will mean everything.

Notre Dame Football Schedule What To Know: The Biggest Games

It’s Notre Dame, so there’s not a whole lot of ducking when it comes to the big games. However, there are more than enough winnable battles to come up with a massive season.

It’s Notre Dame – it’s going to want to get to the College Football Playoff.

That means it has to hit the layups, and it has to nail at least three of the four deep shots. With all due respect to road games against loaded Duke and Louisville teams, the season comes down to at NC State, Ohio State, USC, at Clemson. Lose two of those four, and the CFP is out.

Lose one, and it’s going to be really, really tough to make the tournament – the Irish would have to be perfect against everyone else, and there are way too many landmines.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an open week before any of those big four games, with the closest exception being the Tennessee State game before going to Raleigh to face NC State.

Notre Dame Football Schedule What Really Matters

The ACC schedule isn’t a breeze, partly because that Clemson game on the road is in early November right after having to deal with Pitt.

There isn’t a true dud in the ACC bunch. Duke – don’t laugh, it’s coming off a terrific year with everyone back – is nasty on the road the week after dealing with Ohio State. Going to Louisville the week after that is a problem, too.

Pitt and that pass rush is always dangerous, and the Sam Hartman Invitational against Wake Forest – when the new Irish starting quarterback faces his former team – should be an offensive fight.

Getting to six wins and a bowl won’t be any sort of an issue, but obviously that’s not what the content the 2023 Notre Dame team will be here for.

How close can it get to 11-1 and the College Football Playoff?

In an expanded era – 2024 – this team could go 10-2 with this slate and get in. 10-2 won’t cut it this year, and unfortunately, it’s asking a lot of anyone to get by Ohio State and USC and at Clemson clean, and without misfires against any of the other good teams on the schedule.

There’s a rough stretch of three road games in four weeks, but that’s followed by a week off. The team only leaves Arizona once – for Colorado – from October 14th on.

The schedule is decent enough to get to at least six wins and a bowl game. It’s going to take an upset somewhere, but Washington, UCLA, Utah, and Oregon State all have to make the trip to the desert.

If all goes well, this shouldn’t come down to the date with Arizona State to get bowl eligible.

There are a whole lot of positives to this schedule, including in Big 12 play, but there isn’t much of a break in who the Cyclones miss.

On the plus side, Texas Tech is going to be dangerous, and it’s not on the slate. However, all things considered, you’d rather play the American Athletic Conference guys than the normal Big 12ers. There’s no Houston – that’s not great – and there’s no UCF. You’d like to have West Virginia on your Big 12 schedule, too, but it’s not there.

There are two ways to look at how this Iowa State schedule works. There aren’t two home games in a row after the opening two weeks of the season, so there’s no real chance to settle into a groove. On the plus side, there aren’t two road games in a row.

The other negative is the six road games – one of them Ohio from the MAC – with five Big 12 away dates to deal with.
