Clemson’s all-time series record against 2024 opponents

A look at Clemson’s all-time head to head series record against every opponent on the 2024 football season.

How does Clemson match up historically against each opponent on the team’s 2024 schedule?

Entering the season, Clemson has the third highest winning percentage all-time among ACC schools at .624 percent. The Tigers trail only Florida State (.669) and Miami (.626) in that category.

The Hurricanes have the most national titles of any school in the ACC with five. Clemson and Florida State are tied for second with three apiece. But recent history is on the Tigers’ side, given their 2016 and 2018 national championship seasons — and their bids for two more in 2015 and 2019.

The makeup of Clemson’s 2024 schedule includes seven home games (vs. Appalachian State, NC State, Stanford, Virginia, Louisville, The Citadel, and South Carolina), four road games (at Florida State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Pitt), and one neutral-site game (vs. Georgia in Atlanta).

Here’s a look at how Clemson fares in all-time head to head series play against every opponent on the team’s 2024 schedule.

GAME-BY-GAME

AUG. 31 • VS. GEORGIA • MERCEDES-BENZ STADIUM, ATLANTA, GA.

For the second time in three years, Clemson will open a season in the home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons when the Tigers face the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, Aug. 31. Clemson defeated Georgia Tech, 41-10, in its last visit to the facility to open 2022. The Tigers will attempt to earn their first win against Georgia since 2013 in a matchup of regional rivals that have accounted for four of the last eight national championships. In the series’ 17 installments since 1980, the winner of this contest went on to win the national championship three times.

SEPT. 7 • VS. APPALACHIAN STATE • MEMORIAL STADIUM, CLEMSON, S.C.

Clemson will host its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 7, when the Tigers welcome the Appalachian State Mountaineers to Memorial Stadium. Clemson is 98-17-8 in home openers all-time, including home opener wins against the boys from Boone in 1984, 1991 and 1997. The Tigers are 5-0 all-time against App State, including most recently a 41-10 win against Scott Satterfield’s Mountaineers in 2015.

SEPT. 21 • VS. NC STATE • MEMORIAL STADIUM, CLEMSON, S.C.

After a road loss in Raleigh last year, Clemson will attempt to extend its home dominance over NC State on Saturday, Sept. 21, when the Tigers host the Wolfpack at Memorial Stadium following an open date the prior Saturday. A win would extend Clemson’s home winning streak against the Wolfpack in Death Valley to 10 games, which would be the eighth home winning streak of 10 or more games against a single opponent in school history. The game will feature the winningest coaches in each program’s history. Dabo Swinney is 8-2 all-time against Dave Doeren, Swinney’s second-highest winning percentage against a head coach against whom he’s coached at least 10 games (10-0 vs. Dave Clawson).

SEPT. 28 • VS. STANFORD • MEMORIAL STADIUM, CLEMSON, S.C.

Clemson and Stanford will meet as ACC counterparts for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 28, when the Cardinal make their Death Valley debut. Clemson won the only meeting between the two programs to date, a 1986 Gator Bowl victory when Danny Ford’s Tigers ran out to a 27-0 halftime lead and held on for a 27-21 win against Jack Elway’s 20th-ranked Stanford squad. Of the ACC’s newest trio of programs, Stanford is the only new addition slated to face Clemson in 2024. Stanford will become only the second team from California ever to play in Death Valley, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer George Allen’s Long Beach State squad that lost to Clemson 59-0 in the 1990 season opener.

OCT. 5 • AT FLORIDA STATE • DOAK CAMPBELL STADIUM, TALLAHASSEE, FLA.

Clemson will face Florida State on Saturday, Oct. 5, the programs’ first meeting since Clemson’s heartbreaking overtime loss to the Seminoles last September. Though Clemson is 7-1 in its last eight meetings with Florida State including wins in each of the last three games in Tallahassee, the Seminoles are the last team to have defeated Clemson in back-to-back years, doing so in a three-year span from 2012-14. Clemson is 21-9 under Dabo Swinney when it faces opponents against which it lost its most recent meeting in the series.

OCT. 12 • AT WAKE FOREST • ALLEGACY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION STADIUM, WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.

Dabo Swinney’s perfect record against Wake Forest will again be on the line when the Tigers travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face the Demon Deacons on Saturday, Oct. 12. With a win against Wake Forest last year, Swinney became the first FBS head coach on record in Stats Perform’s data set back to 1996 to win the first 15 games in a series against a single FBS opponent. A 16th consecutive win by Clemson in the series would represent Clemson’s fourth-longest winning streak against a single opponent in school history.

OCT. 19 • VS. VIRGINIA • MEMORIAL STADIUM, CLEMSON, S.C.

One of Clemson’s native sons will return home on Saturday, Oct. 19, when Clemson is slated to face the Virginia Cavaliers under the guidance of Virginia Head Coach Tony Elliott. Elliott was a wide receiver at Clemson from 1999-2003 and was a team captain of the 2003 squad for which Dabo Swinney served as Elliott’s position coach in Swinney’s first year at Clemson. Elliott later served 11 years as an assistant coach at Clemson from 2011-21, helping the Tigers to a 130-21 record in his tenure. Clemson is 27-22-2 all-time against opposing head coaches who were previously Clemson head coaches or assistants; it will be Clemson’s first such contest since defeating former Clemson graduate assistant Gene Chizik’s Auburn squad in the 2012 season opener.

NOV. 2 • VS. LOUISVILLE • MEMORIAL STADIUM, CLEMSON, S.C.

A year after Louisville made its first ACC Championship Game appearance in its history, Clemson will attempt to preclude the Cardinals from earning their first win against the Tigers when Clemson hosts Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 2. Clemson is 8-0 all-time against Louisville with all eight meetings coming since the Cardinals joined the ACC in 2014, including most recently a 31-16 win at Memorial Stadium in 2022.

NOV. 9 • AT VIRGINIA TECH • LANE STADIUM, BLACKSBURG, VA.

Clemson will make its first trip to Virginia Tech since the pandemic-impacted 2020 season — and its first to a fully charged Lane Stadium atmosphere since 2017 — when the Tigers face the Hokies on Saturday, Nov. 9. Dabo Swinney is 6-0 all-time against the Hokies, including a 3-0 mark against both Frank Beamer and Justin Fuente in advance of his first meeting with current Virginia Tech Head Coach Brent Pry. Clemson is 8-2 all-time at Lane Stadium since the facility opened in 1965 and has won its last three games there by an average of 23.0 points per game.

NOV. 16 • AT PITT • ACRISURE STADIUM, PITTSBURGH, PA.

Clemson will play in the city of Pittsburgh for only the third time in school history on Saturday, Nov. 16, when the Tigers face the Pitt Panthers at Acrisure Stadium. Prior to Clemson’s road game at Pitt in 2021, the program’s only other trip to the Steel City came in 1947 in a 34-13 win by Frank Howard’s Tigers against Duquesne at Forbes Field. A Clemson win in 2024 would even the all-time series record between the two programs at 3-3.

NOV. 23 • VS. THE CITADEL • MEMORIAL STADIUM, CLEMSON, S.C.

Clemson will face The Citadel at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 23 in the programs’ first meeting since a 49-0 shutout win by Clemson in 2020. Clemson is 39-0 against FCS opponents since Division I split in 1978, winning 38 of the 39 games by double digits. The game is part of Clemson’s annual non-conference scheduling philosophy of facing two Power Five conference opponents, a Group of Five conference opponent and an in-state Football Championship Subdivision squad.

NOV. 30 • VS. SOUTH CAROLINA • MEMORIAL STADIUM, CLEMSON, S.C.

On Saturday, Nov. 30, Clemson will host the 121st installment of its arch rivalry with South Carolina at Memorial Stadium. Clemson is 73-43-4 all-time against South Carolina, including a 19-11-1 mark against the Gamecocks at home since the rivalry transitioned to a home-and-home format in 1960. Clemson has won eight of the series’ last nine games and has outscored South Carolina by an average of 21.1 points per game in that span.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Clemson Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Tigers miss from the ACC slate?

The Tigers don’t have just enough tough games to make it an interesting schedule, but the ACC run isn’t too bad.

Florida State has to come to Death Valley. That’s the big one. Win that, and everything else should be fine.

It would’ve been nice to miss the Seminoles, though. They’re on the slate, but Pitt isn’t. That’s the one good team to miss, with Boston College, Virginia, and Virginia Tech three relatively easy teams the Tigers don’t get to face. Louisville almost certainly would’ve been a win, but that’s a potentially dangerous offensive squad to skip.

Clemson Football Schedule What Really Matters

Beat Florida State, and get to the week off in mid-October – most likely – 6-0.

And then … game on.

Clemson only plays back-to-back road games once, and it just so happens to be against Miami and NC State right after that midseason break. Follow that up with Notre Dame, and with North Carolina and the trip to South Carolina to close – with Georgia Tech thrown in there – and there’s no real break over the last six weeks.

Clemson Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Clemson might not be above a clunker somewhere along the way, but Florida State, at Miami, at NC State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, at South Carolina. Any of those game could be where the season takes a hit, and it wouldn’t be shocking if there are two losses among those six.

But it’s Clemson. It’s going to expect to go into the final weeks with a shot at the College Football Playoff. With this schedule – helped by just three road games from the opener until the finish – it’s not bad even with those nasty dates to deal with.

Clemson’s biggest potential trap game in 2022

Clemson could have a trap game on its hands in October when the Tigers go on the road to an ACC opponent they have defeated in six consecutive matchups.

Nothing is worse for a college football team than to go into a game against an inferior opponent expecting to come away with a shoo-in victory but ultimately scrape by with a nail-biting win or even fall short at the end.

Clemson experienced that phenomenon nearly every week last season, as seven of the Tigers’ 13 games ended in one-score victory margins.

As for the 2022 season, Athlon Sports’ Steven Lassan recently compiled a list of each contender’s biggest trap games.

For Clemson, Lassan believes the Tigers’ Oct. 15 matchup with Florida State on the road is a game to keep an eye on.

Here’s his reasoning behind the selection.

The Seminoles led 20-17 in the fourth quarter of last year’s 30-20 loss in Death Valley and should be improved in ’22. Also, this game marks the end of a key three-game stretch for coach Dabo Swinney’s team: NC State, at Boston College and at Florida State.

In last year’s matchup with the Seminoles, Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei completed 61.3% of his passes for 189 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

While Uiagalelei didn’t have the most productive game, then-freshman running back Will Shipley led the way on the ground with 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 attempts.

Clemson has won the previous six matchups with the Seminoles, so history is on the Tigers’ side.

To Lassan’s point, however, Clemson will have a three-game stretch against Wake Forest, NC State and Boston College before taking on Florida State.

ACC announces game times for Clemson’s first three games and more

The ACC drops game times for the first three Clemson games and more

Via Clemson Athletic Communications:

The Atlantic Coast Conference and its television partners announced the kickoff times and networks for all ACC controlled contests during the early weeks of the 2022 football season Thursday.

Also included are the times and networks for the Thursday and Friday night contests throughout the 2022 season.

ESPN also announced its complete bowl schedule, which includes most ACC affiliated bowl games.

“We look forward to the upcoming 2022 ACC football season and anticipate a fantastic year with our student-athletes competing at the highest level for ACC and national championships,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “As part of playing arguably the most challenging non-conference schedule in the country, we open the season with some incredible games, which include five consecutive days of football over the Labor Day weekend. We appreciate the outstanding coverage our television partners provide to our institutions and now with full distribution, we specifically look forward to this season of football coverage on ACC Network.”

The ACC football season gets underway on Saturday, Aug. 27, when Florida State hosts Duquesne at 5 p.m. on ACC Network and North Carolina hosts Florida A&M at 8:15 p.m. on ACC Network in Week Zero. It marks the first August season opener for the league since 2019.

The ACC will be featured throughout the Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1-5) with 12 games over a five-day span. No other league plays across all five days in Week One. This is the fourth time in the last six years the ACC has played over five consecutive days in Week One. The Labor Day weekend begins on Thursday, Sept. 1, with both of last year’s ACC division champions in action. ACC and Coastal Division Champion Pitt hosts West Virginia at Heinz Field at 7 p.m. on ESPN, and Atlantic Division champion Wake Forest opens against VMI in Winston-Salem at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network. On Friday, Sept. 2, Virginia Tech plays at Old Dominion at 7 p.m. on ESPN, while Duke plays host to Temple at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network.

Saturday’s slate includes the first of four games this season against an Alliance member school – Boston College vs. Rutgers (Big Ten) at noon on ESPNU – and the first league matchup of the year with Louisville at Syracuse at 8 p.m. on ACC Network. Other games on Sept. 3 include North Carolina at Appalachian State at noon on ESPNU, NC State at East Carolina at noon on ESPN, Richmond at Virginia at 12:30 p.m. on RSN and Bethune-Cookman at Miami at 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network.

On Sunday, Sept. 4, Florida State travels to New Orleans to face LSU at the Caesars Superdome in the Allstate Louisiana Kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. The following night in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Labor Day Monday, Georgia Tech hosts Clemson at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

The second weekend of the season features a conference battle with Boston College at Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. on ACC Network. Two Alliance matchups are also in Week Two – Duke at Northwestern at Noon on FS1 and Virginia at Illinois at 4 p.m. on ESPNU. Wake Forest plays at Vanderbilt at noon on SEC Network, Tennessee travels to Pitt at 3:30 p.m. on ABC and Syracuse plays at UConn at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.

Week three begins with a Friday (Sept. 16) night game between Florida State and Louisville at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Four Power 5 matchups are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16, including Purdue at Syracuse at noon on ESPN2, Ole Miss at Georgia Tech at 3:30 p.m. on ABC, Texas Tech at NC State at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 and Miami at Texas A&M at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

The ACC’s non-conference schedule continues to be the most difficult in the country. In addition to 21 games against Power 5 opponents, the ACC will play eight non-conference games against teams ranked in the final 2021 Associated Press Top 25 poll. All 14 ACC teams play at least one Power 5 non-conference opponent, while seven schools – Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Pitt and Syracuse – play two. ACC teams will play 27 games against opponents that appeared in a bowl game last year. ACC teams will play nine non-conference games against teams in ESPN’s 2022 Way-Too-Early Top 25.

The 2022 Subway ACC Football Championship Game will be played Dec. 3 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, and feature the winner of the Atlantic Division vs. the winner of the Coastal Division. The ACC and the Charlotte Sports Foundation have an agreement in place to keep the championship game in Charlotte through the 2030 season. The game will be televised by ABC with kickoff time announced at a later date.

Clemson Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Tigers miss from the Coastal Division?

The Tigers start the season out in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Georgia Tech, and they host Miami in their ACC regular season finale. Those are the two games against the Coastal Division, which means they don’t get the layup against Duke. On the plus side, they miss North Carolina, Pitt, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.

Clemson Football Schedule What To Know: It only seems like the Tigers aren’t hanging around home

Here’s the positive. Clemson gets a run of three home games in four weeks early, and the final three games are in Death Valley.

Here’s the other side of that. After hosting NC State on October 1st, it only has one home games – Syracuse on October 22nd – until November 12th. That includes dates at Florida State and Notre Dame.

Clemson Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not a bad slate.

Going to Notre Dame is tough, but there’s a week off to get ready for it. Other than that, the non-conference games against Furman and Louisiana Tech aren’t bad, and the South Carolina game is at home.

Unless some ACC team rises up and surprises – or if Clemson falls off the map – the only realistic chances to possibly be an underdog should be at Notre Dame and against South Carolina.

Clemson Tigers Football Schedule Analysis: It’s Clemson, so everyone on the schedule is freaked out about having to play the national championship-level team, but dealing with Georgia to open the season matters. That’s a talent-even game that’s a far bigger showdown for the SEC side – Clemson can lose this, run the table and be fine and Georgia has a much tougher road the rest fo the way.

There’s no North Carolina on the Tiger slate, going to NC State and South Carolina will garner some interest, and five of the last nine games are on the road, but … whatever. Clemson will be a double-digit favorite against everyone but the Dawgs.

Clemson Tigers Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: 12-0. There’s that Georgia game, and a whole lot of four-foot putts. They’re not all going to be easy – there’s always at least one weird close call game against a vastly inferior team – but it’ll take something amazing for anyone on this slate other than UGA to pull off a win,

Clemson Tigers Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: 9-3. Realistically, the worst case scenario is 10-2 with a loss to Georgia and one major slip-up along the way, but that’s a bit too aggressive. Maybe if injuries strike, or if Pitt has a big day from its pass rush at home, or thing could get dicey if Florida State or South Carolina rock in the right moment, but there’s no Notre Dame or North Carolina or Virginia Tech.
