2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look
It’s a very, very interesting schedule, but there aren’t a ton of breaks with who the Tar Heels miss in the ACC.
They don’t have to deal with Notre Dame – that’s a huge plus – and not playing Florida State matters. Wake Forest isn’t an easy out – that’s a decent team to miss – but Boston College, Louisville, and Virginia Tech are all beatable.
On the plus side …
There’s only one game outside of North Carolina – at Pitt – before the end of October, and there are only three games outside of the state overall.
However, that last step is a doozy.
There might be only two true road games in the first ten games, but the last two at Clemson and at NC State save the biggest tests for the very end.
Even so, September is more than just sneaky-tough. South Carolina, Appalachian State, Minnesota, at Pitt – none of those games are guaranteed wins.
Can North Carolina own Chapel Hill?
There will be a few losses before the final two killer games, but there’s nothing until the end that’s unmanageable. There are too many landmines to expect anything too amazing, but it’s hard to get into a twist over a schedule with just four true road games.
Anything less than eight wins with this slate would be a disappointment.

Not having to play NC State isn’t bad, and missing Miami and Duke – yeah, Duke – this year is a positive. However, not getting to play Virginia hurts, and Louisville is one of those 50/50 games the Orange might have liked to have.
One of the biggest positives, though, is there’s no Notre Dame. This year that’s going to be a problem for a whole slew of ACC teams, but …
Syracuse has to play both Clemson and Florida State, and the date with the Seminoles is in Tallahassee. That comes early, and the trip to FSU comes after playing North Carolina as part of a run of three straight ACC road games. It’s broken up by a week off, but it’s still a bit of a problem.
Yes, the Pitt game is in the state of New York, but Yankee Stadium isn’t exactly a home game. That means there’s only one true home game – Boston College – in a five date stretch.
It’s going to be tough after the first few games.
Syracuse was able to get bowling last season with a thrilling win over Purdue and a few other good performances, but the schedule got tougher, the team got banged up, and there was a problem late.
This year, Colgate, Western Michigan, and Army need to be wins. The home game against Boston College is a must, and after that it’s going to be a fight to come up with an extra two or three victories.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look
There’s no Clemson, and there’s no NC State. That’s a good start, and not having to play Miami might be a huge deal. However, it’s not all good with Georgia Tech and Virginia – two of the teams likely to be rebooting a bit this year – not on the slate.
The Panthers could use as many breaks as and as much help as they can get with six road games overall and five in conference play – sort of – because …
They have to play Notre Dame in South Bend.
That’s bad, but even worse is that it’s part of a second half run of three road games in four weeks and four in the final six games. There’s no big break of getting Florida State in Pittsburgh in late November – that’s November 4th.
However, it’s a tad quirky with the Syracuse game being played in Yankee Stadium – sort of a neutral site, even though it’s supposed to be a more pro-Orange crowd – but it’s still away from home. Throw in the road game against West Virginia, and it’s going to be next to impossible to settle in.
There aren’t any back-to-back home games after the opening two.
If Pitt is good, this schedule shouldn’t be that much of a problem.
Getting Florida State at home helps, and out of the six games away from home only the trip to Notre Dame is a massive problem.
Cincinnati is now a Big 12 team, so outside of Wofford, ever other game is against a Power Five program. Even so, six wins and bowl eligibility should be a given, and considering the relatively soft final few weeks, it’s a good slate.

You can’t miss everyone, but it’s about as good as it gets.
The Cavaliers don’t have to deal with Clemson, Florida State, or Pitt. That’s great, not playing Wake Forest and that offense is always good, and if things go as expected, missing Syracuse isn’t too bad.
It would’ve been nice to miss NC State, and it would’ve been wonderful to not go to Miami, but it’s not a bad group to miss. To make it even better, there’s no Notre Dame, either.
However …
After dealing with the toughest season possible, it would’ve been nice to start 2023 totally fresh with a few easy wins to get back into the on-field groove.
Nope.
The Cavaliers have to kick things off against Tennessee, follow it up with a dangerous James Madison team, and the have to go to Maryland. It wouldn’t be a shock to go 0-3 before getting into the ACC season, but …
Again, the ACC season isn’t all that bad.
If the program can refresh in a hurry, there’s a chance to make some noise if it can just get through September.
The Boston College game is winnable and playing William & Mary helps. However, the Cavaliers have to go on the road for three road games in four weeks in the back half and have a run of four road dates in six games.
It’s going to take a few upsets to get to six wins and bowl eligibility, but if they can own November, they can get there.

After a disastrous season, the Hokies could use a bit of a good break.
There’s no Clemson on the slate. That’s about as strong as it gets. There’s no Miami or North Carolina, too. Missing Georgia Tech isn’t a plus, but this year – don’t laugh – not having to play Duke is a good thing.
There are still plenty of nasty ACC games to deal with, but as long as there’s some improvement and some consistency after that rough 2022, there are conference wins to be had.
However …
Three road games in the four weeks of November is rough. Granted, one of them is at Virginia, but that’s still a tough way to close, especially considering the other road stretch.
It’s bad enough to have a three-road-game-in-four-week run, but the Hokies have two of them.
Rutgers and Marshall should be winnable games, but that’s hardly a guarantee on the road. That’s followed up by Pitt and then the trip to Florida State, and …
There’s a home game against Purdue. That has to be a win, and that goest for the road game at Rutgers, too. Do that, and it should be a strong 4-0 start. Lose to the two Big Ten teams, and it’s going to take something special to get to six wins and a bowl game.
On the plus side, there are just four ACC road games, but again, the problem is with the November timing. Again, though, if the Hokies can get hot early, though, this should be a decent season.
