Everything we know about the offense in Cardinals’ 20-13 loss to Lions

We look back at what happened with the Cardinals offensively in their 20-13 loss to the Lions on Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals did not have the same offensive success on Sunday against the Detroit Lions that they had last week against the Los Angeles Rams.

They lost 20-13 on Sunday, scoring only six points after the opening-drive touchdown.

Here is everything we know about what happened offensively for Arizona in the loss.

Run game bottled up

The Cardinals have used the run game to set up their offensive success but were unable to do that against a team that shuts down running backs.

They finished with only 77 rushing yards, a season low so far, and only 32 of those yards came from the running backs. Quarterback Kyler Murray had 45 yards but only nine yards after his first two runs in the first offensive possession.

James Conner’s 17 yards were the fewest he has had with the Cardinals in a game. His streak of seven consecutive games scoring a touchdown was ended.

Third down was tough

After playing very well on third down before Week 3, the Lions made the Cardinals get off the field.

They finished the game converting only one third down, which happened in their opening drive. They went 1-for-9 for the game on third down and then failed twice in twice attempts on fourth down, leading to turnovers on downs.

Missed opportunities on one-on-one matchups

The Lions play a lot of man defense and, as a result, the Cardinals had a lot of opportunities one-on-one. However, there were slightly off-target throws, broken up passes and a couple of drops.

Murray got greedy on interception

Murray explained after the game that he was just trying to give Marvin Harrison Jr. a chance to get a jump ball in the end zone and make a play on the one throw he had intercepted.

He said “that wasn’t the time,” reflectively. He was disappointed to throw his first interception of the season in that moment because he said he felt they were going to score on that drive.

Only passing in the fourth quarter

The Cardinals didn’t attempt a running play in the final quarter, which does make some sense because they were 10 points down for most of the final frame.

Murray went 11-for-17 in the fourth quarter for 119 yards.

Cardinals postgame injury updates following 20-13 loss to Lions

The Cardinals had a few injuries in the loss to the Lions. Here are some updates.

The Arizona Cardinals had a few injuries pop up in their 20-13 loss on Sunday to the Detroit Lions. A couple of starters were impacted.

TE Trey McBride: McBride entered NFL concussion protocol after a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter with Lions safety Brian Branch. When McBride came off the field, it appeared that he was unhappy he had to exit the game. We will see if by Wednesday his practice load is impacted. He had three catches for 25 yards in the game.

DL Justin Jones: Jones suffered a triceps injury during the game and was immediately ruled out the rest of the game. He had one tackle before he exited the game. Fans might worry about that injury because the Cardinals lost three players for the season to upper-arm injuries last season.

DL Khyiris Tonga: He suffered a knee injury in the second half and was announced questionable to return in the fourth quarter. He had four total tackles in the ga. me.

OL Jackson Barton: Barton started at right tackle and had a good game but exited in the fourth quarter with a toe injury. He was in a walking boot after the game. He couldn’t put weight on his right foot, which is why he came out.

S Budda Baker: Baker exited the game briefly in the first half. It looked like he suffered some lower-body injury and limped off the field. He returned on the next defensive series and finished the game.

Lions 20, Cardinals 13: Arizona can’t overcome halftime deficit

The Cardinals didn’t allow the Lions to score in the second half but Detroit’s defense was too much for Arizona in a 20-13 loss.

The Arizona Cardinals lost the Detroit Lions at home on Sunday 20-13, falling to 1-2 on the season. They struggled offensively after their first drive and allowed Detroit to move the ball easily in the first half. An unfortunate call led to a 14-point turnaround, and the defense shut the Lions out in the second half, but they couldn’t overcome Detroit’s tough defense, going 1-for-9 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth down.

Here is how it went down.

Lions 7, Cardinals 0

The Lions received the opening kickoff and went 70 plays in nine plays. They only had one third down. David Montgomery rushed fro 39 yards on the drive, ending it was a one-yard touchdown to give the Lions the lead.

The Cardinals answered with a touchdown of their own. Marvin Harrison Jr. hauled in his third touchdown reception of the season, this time a 10-yarder from Kyler Murray. Murray had a pair of runs for 34 yards and they overcame a holding penalty in the drive to tie the score.

Lions rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold injured his knee on the drive.

Lions 13, Cardinals 7

The Lions took 13 plays on their next possession to 70 yards and score another touchdown, a five-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Jahmyr Gibbs was featured in that drive at running back, gaining 34 yards on nine carries. Kicker Jake Bates missed the extra point.

The Cardinals went three-and-out, but they got the ball back after Wilson sacked Jared Goff on third down. It was his first sack of the season.

A defensive touchdown that wasn’t

The Lions had a third-and-12, Goff was hit, the ball landed in Wilson’s arms and he ran for a touchdown. However, the officials blew the play dead, saying the two-minute warning arrived before the snap. Gibbs ran for 14 yards on the next play and picked up the first down.

Trickery! Lions 20, Cardinals 7

After the misfortune of losing a defensive touchdown to the two-minute warning, the Lions used some trickery to score a touchdown in the final minute of the first half. St. Brown caught a one-yard pass and then lateraled the ball to Gibbs, who went 20 yards for the touchdown.

End-of-half 42-yard FG: Lions 20, Cardinals 10

The Cardinals were able to pick up points at the end of the half. Aided by a 15-yard Detroit penalty, they went 46 yards in 29 seconds and Matt Prater nailed a 42-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to make it 20-10.

Murray picked off

On the opening drive of the second half, Murray there a deep pass to Harrison in the end zone. Kerby Joseph picked off the pass for a turnover. The Lions took over with a 10-point lead at their own 20.

Gardeck INT! Cardinals take over!

https://twitter.com/AZCardinals/status/1837980456224280813

The Cardinals forced a punt after Murray’s interception but went three-and out. The defense made a play, though. Dennis Gardeck picked off Goff and the Cardinals took over at Detroit’s 33-yard line.

Cards stopped on 4th down

Kyler Murray ran to the edge on fourth and less than a yard. Ruled originally as a first down, upon review, he did not reach the line to gain and they got no points after the takeaway when they were in field goal range.

The Lions took over at their own 24.

Injuries

Cardinals defensive lineman Justin Jones injured his triceps in the first half and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Lions tight end Sam LaPorta injured his ankle on the Lions’ touchdown at the end of the half and was announced as questionable to return.

Cardinals get 4th-down stop

The Cardinals returned the favor at their own 34, stuffing Montgomery for no gain on fourth down, keeping the Lions from getting any points after their turnover on downs.

Another turnover on downs

Murray could not connect with McBride on a fourth-down throw with 11:12 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Lions that ball at the Arizona 48.

Lions 20, Cardinals 13

The Cardinals pulled within a touchdown, going 65 yards in nine plays with 3:48 to go and got a 45-yard field goal from Prater. Tight end McBride and Lions safety Brian Branch had a helmet-to-helmet collision that had both taken off the field to be examined.

Lions run clock out

On third-and-11, Goff connected with St. Brown to pick up a first down and take the game to the two-minute warning. After the Cardinals used their final timeout, Goff ran for one final first down before kneeling out the clock.

Lions TE Sam LaPorta exits game vs. Cardinals with ankle injury

He got hurt on the Lions’ final first-half TD. He was announced as questionable to return.

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta suffered an ankle at the end of the first half against the Arizona Cardinals and had to exit the game.

In the third quarter, it was announced that LaPorta had an ankle injury and was questionable to return. He went down on the Jahmyr Gibbs 20-yard touchdown with 29 seconds left in the first half.

LaPorta had two receptions for 36 yards before exiting the game.

Officials hose the Cardinals with two-minute call on defensive touchdown

The Cardinals should have had a 14-13 lead but a would-be defensive touchdown was nullified.

The Arizona Cardinals trailed the Detroit Lions 20-10 at halftime, but the end of the half should have gone so much differently. The officials robbed the Cardinals of what should have been a defensive touchdown, giving them a 14-13 lead.

Safety Jalen Thompson blitzed off the edge, hit Jared Goff, forcing either a fumble or an errant throw. The ball landed in linebacker Mack Wilson’s arms and he was en route to the end zone for a touchdown.

However, the play was ruled dead. The officials said the ball was not snapped before the two-minute warning.

To everyone watching, that was not the case. Here is what was seen on TV:

https://twitter.com/Alex__Monaco/status/1837968704317149289

The ball was snapped at 2:01.

No play, no turnover, no touchdown.

Four plays later, Goff had a 21-yard touchdown pass, a nifty one-yard pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who then lateraled the ball to Jahmyr Gibbs, who then ran the rest of the 20 yards for the score.

As a result, the Lions took a 20-7 lead instead of the Cardinals having a 14-13 lead.

Cardinals inactives: Kelvin Beachum out, Greg Dortch to play vs. Lions

The Cardinals had to face the Lions with a third-string right tackle.

The Arizona Cardinals released their list of inactive players for their Week 3 game against the Detroit Lions 90 minutes before kickoff. As expected, receiver Greg Dortch, questionable for the game with a hamstring injury, was not on it. He would suit up and play.

However, starting right tackle Kelvin Beachum was deactivated. He suffered a hamstring injury during the week and was officially questionable for the game. The Cardinals elevated tackles Jackson Barton and Charlie Heck from the practice squad. One of them was set to start in his place.

Second-year defensive lineman Dante Stills, questionable for the game with a shoulder injury, was set to play, giving them all six D-linemen active and available to play.

These are the Cardinals’ inactive players in Week 3:

Arizona Cardinals Week 3 inactive list

  • OL Kelvin Beachum
  • CB Darren Hall
  • LB Jesse Luketa
  • LB Victor Dimukeje
  • OL Jon Gaines II
  • TE Travis Vokolek
  • WR Xavier Weaver

Hall, Luketa, Gaines, Vokolek and Weaver have all been inactive for three straight weeks. Dimukeje played in the first two games. The Cardinals likely expect to use more base defenses with three down linemen.

NFL best bets: Anytime TD scorers in Cardinals-Lions

Some bets on anytime TD scores you should consider.

The Arizona Cardinals take on the Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon in Week 3. It could be a game with a few touchdowns between the two teams.

Who are the best bets for anytime touchdown scorers?

Here are my picks for the best bets, with odds coming from BetMGM Sportsbook.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

NFL best bets Week 3: Anytime TD scorers in Lions-Cardinals

Cardinals RB James Conner (-120)

He has scored a touchdown in seven straight games, dating back to last season. It’s not a great pick, but it should be easy money.

Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. (+130)

He had two touchdowns last week and was targeted two other times in the end zone.

Cardinals TE Elijah Higgins (+700)

He scored last week and, with questions at right tackle, we should expect to see a lot of multiple tight end sets.

Detroit Defense/Special teams (+550)

Since the Cardinals might have a third-string right tackle trying to block Aidan Hutchinson, a strip sack that is picked up and returned for a touchdown isn’t a bad bet for the odds.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray (+150)

It has been a while since we saw him rush for a touchdown. He had over 50 rushing yards in each of the last two games.

4 key matchups to watch in Cardinals’ Week 3 game vs. Lions

Of the four key matchups, there is a premier battle of rookie first-round picks.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Detroit Lions at home at State Farm Stadium Sunday at 1:25 p.m. Arizona time. The Lions are favored in the game but both teams are 1-1 with their only wins coming against the L.A. Rams.

In this game, several matchups will be intriguing to watch.

Which matchups matter and will be fun to watch?

Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. vs. Lions CB Terrion Arnold

Both are rookies. Both are first-round picks. Both have significant roles on their teams. Get your popcorn. Expect some fun!

Harrison, of course, had four catches for 130 yards and two scores last week against the Rams. Arnold has nine total tackles in two games but has not yet broken up a pass.

Cardinals RT ?? vs. Lions Aidan Hutchinson

Hutchinson has 5.5 sacks in two games and, including the end of last year’s regular season, has 10.5 in his last five. He had 4.5 alone in the Lions’ loss to Tampa Bay.

Kelvin Beachum would start but has a hamstring injury and is questionable to play. Jackson Barton and Charlie Heck were both elevated from the practice squad. Beachum seems unlikely to play, which likely means that it will be Barton, who has 13 career offensive snaps, will have the task of blocking Hutchinson.

Cardinals CBs Star Thomas, Sean Murphy-Bunting vs. Lions WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams

St. Brown had 11 catches last week against the Bucs. Williams has 200 receiving yards through two games. They will test the Cardinals’ cornerbacks.

Cardinals LBs Kyzir White, Mack Wilson vs. Lions RBs David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs

The Cardinals struggled against Buffalo’s James Cook. They completely shut down the Rams’ Kyren Williams. The Lions have a two-headed attack of Montgomery and Gibbs. Each has over 120 yards through two games.

Greg Dortch expected to play vs. Lions

Dortch was officially questionable for the game with a hamstring injury.

The Arizona Cardinals entered Sunday with three players listed as questionable to play their Week 3 home game against the Detroit Lions. One of them is receiver Greg Dortch, their starting slot receiver.

However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Dortch will play.

Dortch suffered a hamstring injury late in the week. It doesn’t appear that it is serious.

Had he not been able to play, rookie Xavier Weaver likely would have replaced him in the lineup.

Starting right tackle Kelvin Beachum is also questionable with a hamstring injury, but since the Cardinal elevated two tackles from the practice squad, it seems likely that Beachum will sit out.

Second-year defensive lineman Dante Stills is questionable with a shoulder injury.

The Cardinals and Lions will release their inactive lists 90 minutes before kickoff.
