Takeaways and observations from Cardinals’ 30-12 loss to Lions

The Cardinals laid an egg against the Lions. Here are some of the takeaways from Sunday’s loss.

The Arizona Cardinals could not have had a worse afternoon in Detroit. Needing only a win over the worst team in the NFL to lock up a postseason spot, they went in and laid an egg.

The Lions jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back, beating Arizona 30-12 in Week 15.

.It wasn’t pretty.

What did we take away from the game?

Cardinals become source of infamy with loss to Lions

It was the first time in NFL history that a one-win team beat a 10-win team by double digits. Yuck.

The Arizona Cardinals did the opposite of what everyone expected to in Week 15. All they needed to do was beat the one-win Detroit Lions and they would have clinched a playoff berth.

Instead, they made history, and it was in the wrong way.

In a 30-12 loss to the Lions, they accomplished an NFL first.

It was the first time in NFL history that a one-win team beat a 10-win team by double digits.

After the loss, the Cardinals look more like a team on the brink of a second straight late-season collapse than a team that should be gearing up for a postseason run.

You normally like to see your team make history. This would be one of those exceptions.

Cardinals-Lions live scoring updates, highlights, more

We will give live in-game updates about what happens between the Cardinals and Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals (10-3) face the Detroit Lions (1-11-1) on the road in Week 15. The Cardinals are heavily favored and have been fantastic on the road this season. They are 7-0 away from home and have won every game by at least 10 points.

They will be without receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who had knee surgery and is out until late in the playoffs. However, they are expected to get running back Chase Edmonds and guard Justin Pugh back in the lineup.

Detroit is missing its two best offensive weapons in tight end T.J. Hockenson, who had season-ending thumbs surgery, and running back D’Andre Swift, who is out with a shoulder injury.

The Cardinals clinch a playoff spot with the win.

How will this game play out? Below, we will give live in-game updates for highlights, scoring plays, injuries and more.

Chase Edmonds, James Conner, Justin Pugh, Zach Ertz all active for Cardinals

Check out the Cardinals players who will not dress against the Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals get back two offensive starters as they take on the Detroit Lions in Week 15. They released their list of inactive players for the game and none are starters.

The four inactives?

  • QB Trace McSorley
  • RB Eno Benjamin
  • CB Breon Borders
  • DL Zach Kerr

Only Kerr was injured. He was questionable with a rib injury.

Everyone else who was listed as questionable — running back James Conner, guard Justin Pugh and tight end Zach Ertz — will suit up and play.

Pugh will start at left guard. With Rodney Hudson on the COVID list, Max Garcia will start at center and Josh Jones presumably will start at right guard with Garcia at center.

They will also have a full defensive lineup minus cornerback Robert Alford, who was placed on injured reserve on Saturday. Antonio Hamilton will get his snaps on defense.

Potential records, milestones for Cardinals vs. Lions

The team and a few individuals can set records or achieve milestones with their performance in Week 15 against the Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals have a playoff berth on the line against the Detroit Lions. If they win the game, they clinch a postseason spot for the first time since 2015.

However, while that is the No. 1 goal — win and get in the postseason — the team and some players have individual and team records and milestones they can reach in the game.

Let’s check out what those are.

RB James Conner, TE Zach Ertz both ‘looking good to play’ vs. Lions

The Cardinals expect to have almost a fully healthy offensive lineup against the Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals have a number of players on their final injury report listed as questionable for the game. Among them were running back James Conner, who suffered an ankle injury at the end of the team’s Monday night loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and tight end Zach Ertz, who apparently suffered a hamstring injury in practice on Friday.

It appears both will be good to go Sunday morning.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, both Conner and Ertz are ‘looking good to play’ against the Lions.

Conner playing was more or less expected. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said he felt good about both Conner and Chase Edmonds, who was activated off injured reserve Saturday, both playing.

With the loss of receiver DeAndre Hopkins for at least the rest of the regular season, getting both running backs back will be important and having Ertz as another pass-catching threat along with the other receivers on the roster will be critical.

Kickoff for the Cardinals’ game against the Lions is 11 a.m. Arizona time. Inactives will be announced about 9:30 a.m. Arizona time.
