Cardinals getting Justin Murray, Lamont Gaillard game reps in O-line rotation

The Cardinals like keeping their interior linemen fresh during the game and developing guys to be future starters.

Most NFL teams only replace offensive linemen because of injury or ineffectiveness. Those positions typically aren’t like running backs or defensive linemen, who rotate in and out.

The Arizona Cardinals do things a little different.

Last year during the final month of the year, they found reps for Mason Cole, now the team’s starting center, at multiple positions, and they appear to be doing it again this month with Justin Murray and Lamont Gaillard.

On Sunday, Gaillard came in for Cole for 16 snaps and Murray played 39 snaps, 22 at right guard and 17 at left guard.

There were no injuries announced during the game, although both Pugh and Sweezy have dealt with injuries in recent weeks.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury explained there are a couple of reasons why they rotate guys in on the line.

One reason is the effectiveness of the starters.

“If a guy can be better when he’s fresh and we have an adequate player behind him then we’ll try to look into that,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Wednesday.

Pugh and Sweezy are older players and have dealt with injuries this year.

Kingsbury said that finding ways to maximize players is something they want to do.

There is the other factor — the players behind the starters. “We’ve had some guys that we feel are deserving of playing and can help us play,” he said. That was Cole a season ago and this year it is Murray and Gaillard, both of whom have started games this season.

It worked for the Cardinals last year, as they ran the ball extremely well and also pass protected better.

Another factor that could come into play is that they could be grooming both Gaillard and Murray for potential starting roles next season, giving them game reps and experience.

Cole did that last year and then took over the starting center job.

Murray signed a contract extension, while Sweezy will become a free agent. Pugh has been effective but because of his contract, he potentially could be moved for salary cap relief, especially if they believe he can be effectively replaced.

For Gaillard, it could set up a competition at center with Cole.

Over the final four weeks of the regular season, it will be a trend to watch for Arizona, especially if there is an uptick in production again after a bit of a lull the last three games.

QB Daniel Jones limited in 1st injury report of Week 14 for Giants

Check out New York’s first injury report of the week.

The New York Giants will host the Arizona Cardinals this week in Week 14. Instead of a full practice to start the week on Wednesday, they held a walkthrough. They still released an injury report but it is only estimated because they did not hold a full practice.

On the report, three players were listed as non-participants and two were limited.

Starting quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring) was one who was limited. It is not known yet whether he will be able to play, although head coach Joe Judge said earlier this week Jones would be given every opportunity to prove he can play and protect himself from further injury.

The Giants’ three non-participants were defensive back Madre Harper (knee), linebacker Blake Martinez (back) and tackle Matt Peart (ankle). Martinez is expected to recover in time to play, although his injury gave people a scare on Sunday.

In addition to Jones being limited, safety Darnell Holmes also was limited with a knee injury.

Did not participate:

  • DB Madre Harper (knee)
  • LB Blake Martinez (back)
  • T Matt Peart (ankle)

Limited participation:

  • S Darnell Holmes (knee)
  • QB Daniel Jones (hamstring)

QB Kyler Murray off injury report; LB De’Vondre Campbell sits on Wednesday

LB De’Vondre Campbell was among the six Cardinals who didn’t practice on Wednesday.

The Arizona Cardinals kicked off their week of practice in Week 14 to prepare for the New York Giants. On Wednesday, they released their first injury report of the week.

The first thing of note is that quarterback Kyler Murray no longer is listed. The shoulder that had him on the injury report the last two weeks is no longer an issue.

They did, though, have six players who did not practice. Receiver DeAndre Hopkins was given the day off as is normally the case on Wednesdays. However, receiver Larry Fitzgerald apparently had a full practice after coming off the COVID list. He typically is given the day off on Wednesdays but did not this week.

Starting inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell did not practice, listed with an ankle injury. That could give rookie Isaiah Simmons some playing time this week.

Safety Jalen Thompson (ankle) also did not practice and head coach Kliff Kingsbury already ruled him out for Sunday’s game.

Cornerback Johnathan Joseph (neck), defensive tackle Domata Peko (knee) and safety Charles Washington (groin) also sat out Wednesday.

Rookie defensive linemen Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence were both limited. Lawrence si still dealing with the calf injury that had him on injured reserve. Fotu was listed for both his ankle and his hip.

Did not participate:

  • WR DeAndre Hopkins (rest)
  • S Jalen Thompson (ankle)
  • LB De’Vondre Campbell (ankle)
  • DT Domata Peko (knee)
  • CB Johnathan Joseph (neck)
  • S Charles Washington (groin)

Limited participation:

  • DL Leki Fotu (ankle, hip)
  • DL Rashard Lawrence (calf)

Cardinals DL Jordan Phillips designated to return from injured reserve

They potentially could get him back to play against the Giants.

The Arizona Cardinals have reinforcements coming on the defensive line. The team announced Wednesday Jordan Phillips has been designated to return from injured reserve, meaning he can practice with the team.

Phillips was placed on injured reserve November 19 after reaggravating a hamstring injury. He injured his hamstring in Week 7 against the Seattle Seahawks and played in Week 9 against the Miami Dolphins but had a setback. He has not played since.

If he is able to be activated from IR, then the Cardinals will almost be at full strength on the defensive line. They have had as many as five defensive linemen on IR at the same time. Josh Mauro and Corey Peters are still there. Peters’ injury ends his season.

He can be activated anytime between now and 21 days from now.

In eight games this season, he has 10 total tackles, two sacks, three quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Larry Fitzgerald back on active roster after stint on COVID list

He missed two games but will be good to go this weekend when the Cardinals take on the New York Giants.

The Arizona Cardinals get their legend back on the active roster. After missing two games, receiver Larry Fitzgerald has been removed from the Reserve/COVID-19 list and reinstated to the active 53-man roster.

Fitzgerald reportedly tested positive for the virus and was placed on the list on November 26.

The games he missed were his first since 2014. The Cardinals lost both games and have lost three in a row and four of their last five.

While Fitzgerald is not having one of his more productive seasons statistically, he is still important to the team.

“He is a tremendous leader and presence for us, obviously,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Monday. “He brings a level of confidence because of what he’s accomplished and what he can do on the field, there’s no doubt.”

As of Monday, Kingsbury was unsure when Fitzgerald would be back but hoped it would be soon.

Fitzgerald had 43 receptions for 336 yards this season, although he did have eight catches for 62 yards when he last played, the Cardinals’ 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11.

Giants QB Daniel Jones will be given ‘every opportunity’ to start vs. Cardinals

Joe Judge wants to see if he will be able to defend himself on the field without injuring his hamstring further.

The Arizona Cardinals will take on the 5-7 New York Giants on the road this weekend in Week 14. The Giants are coming off a big win over the Seattle Seahawks and they did it with backup quarterback Colt McCoy.

Starter Daniel Jones has a hamstring injury.

It is possible that Jones is back in the lineup against the Cardinals but it isn’t a sure thing. Giants head coach Joe Judge is going to give him the chance to practice but it will come down to protecting him.

“I think we’re going to give him every opportunity to go on the practice field this week and show that he can defend himself on the field properly,” Judge said on Monday, according to Giants Wire’s Dan Benton. “If that’s the case, we obviously want him to play. We’re going to make sure we’re doing the right thing by him.”

Judge said that Jones would have tried to play in Week 13. “This guy wanted to go out there and play. Ultimately, I’ll tell you right now, I had to protect him from himself,” he said.

McCoy didn’t play particularly well in Jones’ place, completing 13-of-22 passes for only 105 yards, throwing one touchdown pass and one interception.

Jones has had an up-and-down season thus far. In 11 starts, he has completed 63.2% of his passes this season for 2,335 yards, eight touchdown passes and nine interceptions. He has also fumbled seven times this season.
