Broncos coach tracker: Known candidates so far

We are tracking all of the Broncos’ head coach interviews on this page.

After firing Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver Broncos have now begun searching for a new head coach.

Denver’s search committee is led by co-owner/CEO Greg Penner and also includes minority owner Condoleezza Rice and general manager George Paton. Broncos Wire has published a list of 20 potential head coach candidates for the team, but Denver’s interview list will likely be shorter.

Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain wants to play for a winner.

“A coach with a winning attitude, a coach that makes everybody around him better,” Surtain said on Sunday when asked what kind of coach he wants the team to hire. “A coach that leads by example, at least vocally, and just a great coach all around. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

We will be tracking all of Denver’s coach candidates on this page over the next few weeks, so check back for updates in the coming days.

1. Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh (staying at Michigan)
2. Ex-Saints HC Sean Payton (interview)
3. Broncos DC Ejiro Evero (interview)
4. Cowboys DC Dan Quinn (interview)
5. Rams DC Raheem Morris (interview)
6. 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans (interview)
7. Ex-NFL HC Jim Caldwell (interview)
8. Ex-Stanford HC David Shaw (interview)

The Broncos fired Hackett with two games remaining in the 2022 season. After that, Denver named senior assistant Jerry Rosburg the interim coach to close out the season. Rosburg impressed fans and pundits during his two weeks in charge, but he has hinted that he will step away from coaching this offseason.

Whoever becomes the team’s next head coach will have to make decisions on the rest of Hackett’s holdover coaching staff. The list of strong candidates to remain with the team (if not given a promotion elsewhere) includes Evero and wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni.

1st-round draft pick Broncos traded to Seahawks will be 5th overall

The first-round pick the Broncos traded to the Seahawks will be fifth overall.

Last spring, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton traded first-, second- and fifth-round picks in the 2022 NFL draft, plus first- and second-round picks in 2023, plus quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant and defensive lineman Shelby Harris to the Seattle Seahawks.

In exchange for those picks and players, Seattle sent quarterback Russell Wilson and a 2022 fourth-round pick back to Denver.

The Seahawks used the Broncos’ first-round pick last year (No. 9 overall) to select offensive tackle Charles Cross. Seattle then used Denver’s second-round pick to select outside linebacker Boye Mafe. The Seahawks later traded the fifth-round pick from the Broncos and used two resulting picks to select outside linebacker Tyreke Smith and wide receiver Dareke Young.

The Broncos used the fourth-round pick from Seattle to select defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike. So far, Denver has added two players in the trade while the Seahawks have added seven — and two more players are on the way for Seattle this year.

With the 2022 regular season now over, we know the 2023 first-round pick the Broncos traded will be fifth overall. Seattle will also own Denver’s second-round pick in this year’s draft. Even if Wilson has a better season next fall than he did in 2022, it’s looking like the Seahawks easily won last year’s trade with the Broncos.

There is some early-round good news for Denver this year — Paton acquired a first-round pick from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for outside linebacker Bradley Chubb last November.

The pick the Dolphins traded to the Broncos originally belonged to the San Francisco 49ers, so we won’t know exactly where the pick will fall in the first round until after San Francisco’s playoff run has concluded.

The 49ers’ pick could end up being anywhere between 23-32 late in the first round. So Denver will have a first-round pick this spring — unless they use it to acquire coach Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints.

10 takeaways from the Broncos’ 2022 season

Here are ten takeaways from the Broncos’ 2022 season.

The Denver Broncos wrapped up the 2022 season on Sunday with a 5-12 record, marking the second-straight year the team has finished in last place in the AFC West and the seventh-straight year Denver has missed the playoffs.

After a sixth-straight losing season, the Broncos plan to make big changes this offseason, most notably by bringing in a new head coach. Before we completely turn our attention toward the future, though, we’re taking a quick look back at the 2022 season.

There were a few bright spots, but it was mostly a forgettable year for Denver. Here are ten takeaways from the Broncos’ season.

The Denver Broncos won their final game of the season on Sunday, defeating their division rivals the Los Angeles Chargers 31-28. Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson completed 13-of-24 passes for 283 and three touchdowns, which ties his season high. Denver running back Latavius Murray added 103 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Since this is the last game of the season, this will be the last Twitter reaction post of the 2022 campaign due to the Broncos being eliminated from the playoffs. However, since the Broncos brought home the win, it may be a more positive outlook. Let’s take a dive in to conclude the 2022 season.

Studs and duds from Broncos’ 2022 season

Denver Broncos opponents for 2023 NFL season

The Broncos’ opponents for the 2023 NFL season are now set.

Now that the 2022 NFL regular season has concluded, we know the Denver Broncos’ full list of opponents for the 2023 season.

Most of the team’s upcoming opponents were already known from the NFL’s rotating schedule format, and their same-place opponents from the AFC North, NFC East and AFC South are now official, too.

Because the Broncos finished in last place in the AFC West, they will face the fourth-place finishers from the AFC North (Cleveland Browns), NFC East (Washington Commanders) and AFC South (Houston Texans).

Here’s a look at the team’s complete schedule of opponents for the 2023 season. The NFL will announce the finalized schedule with dates and times later this offseason.

Broncos defeat Chargers 31-28 in season finale

Shout out to Jerry Rosburg for leading two impressive performances from the Broncos to close out the season.

In his final game as interim head coach, Jerry Rosburg led the Denver Broncos to the 500th win in franchise history, the team’s 300th victory at home.

Before the game, Denver quarterback Russell Wilson and Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. met at midfield for a No. 3 prayer in recognition of recovering Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

The Broncos trailed the Chargers 14-10 in the second quarter after a Latavius Murray rushing touchdown and a 33-yard Brandon McManus field goal. Denver safety Justin Simmons set up that first-half field goal with a forced fumble that linebacker Josey Jewell recovered.

L.A. then added a field goal and the Broncos responded with a touchdown that was set up by quarterback Russell Wilson’s 57-yard pass to Jerry Jeudy. On the next play, Wilson connected on a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Eric Tomlinson that tied the game at 17 just before halftime.

In the second half, Denver took a 24-17 lead after rookie running back Tyler Badie caught a 24-yard touchdown pass on his first touch as a pro. Later, after a Wilson interception, the Chargers added a field goal to make it 24-20.

Simmons later forced another fumble that was recovered by fellow safety Kareem Jackson to halt a promising L.A. drive late in the third quarter. Wilson then led a seven-play, 89-yard drive that was capped off with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton.

The Chargers finally benched some of their starters after the Broncos had built a 31-20 fourth-quarter lead. L.A. did not rest wide receiver Keenan Allen, who scored in the fourth quarter to make it 31-28 following a successful two-point conversion.

Denver then held on to win 31-28.

With their season now over, the Broncos will turn their attention toward an upcoming coach search and a busy offseason.
