Why rookie RB James Cook is a perfect fit in the Buffalo Bills’ pass-first offense

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick goes to the film to break down how rookie running back James Cook fits like a glove in the Buffalo Bills’ offense.

The Buffalo Bills were looking to grab a running back early in 2022 NFL Draft. So, with the 63rd pick in the second round, they selected James Cook from the University of Georgia.

Last year was Cook’s most productive season — he had 728 rushing yards, seven touchdowns and 284 receiving yards with four touchdowns. In the NCAA national championship game, he led Georgia in rushing with 77 yards on six carries and set the record for the longest run in a championship game (67 yards). Cook’s ability to catch in the open field and make guys miss at the line of scrimmage was a perfect fit for the pass-first Bills.

Bills GM Brandon Beane, when asked about his new running back: “This was a guy that really stood out to us with the ball in his hands. You can split him out, he can run routes similar to a receiver, obviously he’s a good guy to hand the ball to in the backfield.”

Let’s dive deeper into the film to help figure out why Cook is a perfect scheme fit for the Bills!

Bills coaches, players show up as a team to help Buffalo heal after mass shooting

The Bills arrived at Buffalo’s Jefferson Avenue on Wednesday to help the community heal after last Saturday’s racist mass shooting.

On Wednesday, several Buffalo Bills coaches and players — including head coach Sean McDermott, quarterback Josh Allen, and receiver Stefon Diggs — showed up at Buffalo’s Jefferson Avenue to serve food to members of the community and show support in the wake of last Saturday’s racist mass shooting in which 10 people were killed, and three more were injured.

The shooting happened at the Tops supermarket in a part of the city more populated by Black citizens. Gunman Payton Gendron, 18 posted a racist manifesto online before opening fire at a Tops Supermarkets in Buffalo. The FBI is investigating the shooting as a hate crime, as Gendron traveled 230 miles from his hometown to a predominantly Black neighborhood. Gendron’s vitriol was based primarily on the racist theory that white people are being replaced by people of color — a disgusting and ridiculous trope frequently echoed by people in high places like Fox News’ Tucker Carlson and New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, the No. 3 House Republican.

Gendron stated in his document that his goals were to “kill as many Blacks as possible,” “avoid dying,” and “spread ideals.”

The Bills were more interested in spreading ideals of love, recovery, and togetherness.

In addition, the The Buffalo Bills Foundation and NFL Foundation have combined to donate $400,000 to Buffalo’s East Side community heal in the wake of Saturday’s targeted attack against the Black community.

A combined $200,0000 will go to the Buffalo Together Community Response Fund. This new fund is a collaborative philanthropic effort across the region that will address the immediate and long-term needs in our community, including systemic issues that have marginalized communities of color.

“On behalf of the Buffalo Together Community Response Fund, we are most grateful for the generous contributions from the Buffalo Bills Foundation and the National Football League Foundation that will allow us to create real change and emerge from the darkness of this heinous act,” said Clotilde Perez-Bode Dedecker, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. “This Fund is a partnership to build upon the collective desire to take action and to work together as a community to address immediate needs, long-term rebuilding and systemic issues that continue to marginalize communities of color.”

The other $200,000 will be donated directly from the Buffalo Bills Foundation to various nonprofits working on the emergency response efforts to address the immediate needs of Buffalo’s East Side residents. As an example of one of these efforts, we have partnered with Buffalo Go Green, African Heritage Food Co-op, the Resource Council of WNY, and UB Food Lab to arrange home food deliveries to those unable to come to a food distribution site.

Chiefs’ fans donate more than $178K to Buffalo Children’s Hospital

How are Chiefs fans honoring the Bills’ Mafia?

The Kansas City Chiefs’ fandom has stepped up in a huge way for an opponent.

Days after the AFC West champs outlasted the Buffalo Bills in overtime in an incredible Divisional Round game, the Kansas City fandom showed its support of the famed Bills’ Mafia.

How you ask?

How about donating $178,000 at this writing to Oishei Children’s Hospital as a nod to the Bills’ Mafia’s fundraising efforts.

The idea came from a Chiefs Kingdome Facebook group mention to donate in $13 increments to Patrick Mahomes’ Foundation to commemorate the 13 seconds it took for a game-tying drive at the end of regulation.

It became an audible to the Bills’ fund-raising when KC fans recognized the efforts of their opponent’s fans.

The foundation was ignited by Bills QB Josh Allen and pays tribute to his late grandmother, Patricia.

This is what sports and fandom is supposed to be about.

Josh Allen delivers fourth TD pass to Gabriel Davis

Gabriel Davis makes NFL history and puts the Bills in the AFC Championship game

Gabriel Davis has done something no player has done in NFL history. And every bit of it was necessary for the Buffalo Bills to take a 36-33 lead in a Divisional Round game Sunday at Arrowhead.

Davis caught his fourth touchdown pass of the game from Josh Allen with 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Davis becomes the first player in NFL history to catch 4 TD passes in a playoff game.

He has 8 catches for 201 yards and 4 scores.

Incredibly, the lead did not hold up as Harrison Butker kicked a 49-yard field goal as time ran out to tie the game at 36.

Josh Allen has been miraculous for the Buffalo Bills.

On a late drive Sunday in the fourth quarter, he willed the Bills to first down after first down against the Kansas City Chiefs in a Divisional Round game at Arrowhead.

He saved his best for a fourth-and-13 play.

Allen threw a strike to a wide-open Gabriel Davis for a touchdown to give Buffalo a 27-26 lead with 1:54 to play.

Sean McDermott played it smart and went for a 2-point conversion to give the Bills a three-point lead.

Allen found Stefon Diggs in the back of the end zone for a 29-26 lead.

The Bills are 4-for-4 with 2 touchdowns on fourth down.

The Chiefs have no answer for Josh Allen and Gabriel Davis

Josh Allen is matching Patrick Mahomes big play for big play as the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs staged a duel in an AFC Divisional Round game Sunday at Arrowhead.

After Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense got a brilliant 25-yard run from Mecole Hardman for a 23-14 lead — the PAT was missed — Allen countered.

It took one play and it went 75 yards as Allen unloaded and found Gabriel Davis for the touchdown.

It was the second scoring connection between Allen and Davis in the game and as the contest headed to the fourth quarter, Buffalo trailed 23-21.

Davis is a gamer.

Film study: Chiefs shouldn’t overcommit to Josh Allen’s running ability

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick analyzes game film to see how the Chiefs can contain Josh Allen’s scrambling ability.

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills versus Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Today’s late game features two of the NFL’s brightest young stars in a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game.

Both quarterbacks threw five touchdown passes in wild-card round victories last weekend, setting the stage for an epic postseason duel.

Let’s go back and look at the Week 5 matchup between the Bills and Chiefs, a 38-20 Buffalo victory, paying particular attention to how Allen affected the game with his running ability.

Allen rushed for six touchdowns during the regular season, including one against the Chiefs. We should note that the Chiefs were without the services of key players in that game, such as defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Charvarius Ward. So when Allen decides to run the ball right up the middle of the defensive line tonight, he likely will be met with more resistance.

When we break down the statistics from that Week 5 matchup, we see that Allen rushed for 41 yards on four attempts in the first half. Allen’s running ability opens up space in the passing and ground games.

Allen relied on his legs early in Week 5, accounting for three of the Bills’ rushing attempts on their first drive, including a 9-yard touchdown.

On the ultimate play of that drive, the Bills lined up in a two-back set with tailback Zach Moss and wideout Isaiah McKenzie straddling Allen.

Moss acted as the lead blocker as McKenzie took the fake handoff. Allen read the defensive end, but also the linebackers as they took a step to the outside. This is why he felt comfortable with the keeper, also knowing he had two offensive linemen pulling to open a running lane.

When the Bills called this play again, the Chiefs were ready.

Their linebackers didn’t bite on the fake to the right. Instead, they stayed home and brought Allen down for a 1-yard loss.

Last week against the New England Patriots, the Bills used the same package. This time, they handed off to McKenzie, and the play went for a 7-yard gain and nearly moved the sticks. So while spying Allen is key, the Bills aren’t afraid to go in a different direction.

When the Chiefs defense started spying Allen with at least one defender and allowed their defensive linemen to penetrate the correct gaps in Week 5, the Bills’ backfield only totaled 37 yards on 11 carries. Kansas City also was able to also hold Allen to 18 yards on seven carries in the second half.

If the Chiefs are able to contain the edges and allow their defensive tackles to get pressure up the middle against the Bills, they are much more likely to see better results.

In the clip below, two defenders at the second level get to the larger side of the field to stop a potentially big gain to the outside.

Allen undoubtedly can make defenders miss in the open field. His running ability, paired with his arm talent, is unlike any quarterback we’ve seen in recent years. That said, using a spy and forcing Allen to use his arm to win the game is likely to be the lesser of evils for the Chiefs.

A rushing attempt from the running back is less of a threat than one from quarterback because of the even number of blockers and tacklers. But when the quarterback runs the ball, and there is just one misdirection or hesitation from a defender, there will be fewer defenders — leaving huge holes in the defense.

The Chiefs defense would be wise to respect Allen’s legs and force McKenzie and Singletary to win their matchups on the ground.

Bills put exclamation point on romp with Tommy Doyle’s big-man touchdown

Tommy Doyle of the Buffalo Bills with a big-man touchdown for Buffalo

The final touch on an almost perfect performance by the Buffalo Bills came in the fourth quarter Saturday against the New England Patriots.

Up by 30 points, Josh Allen threw his fifth TD pass of the game … to offensive lineman Tommy Doyle. from 1 yard.

Tyler Bass, who was having a rough game on PATs, hit the upright but it doinked through to make it 47-10.

How about this for an NFL first in the postseason era since the Super Bowl started?

In fact, when the Bills scored TDs on their first 5 drives it marked the first time that happened in a playoff game in the Super Bowl era.

Josh Allen to Dawson Knox for wonderful Bills’ touchdown

Dawson Knox with a TD reception in the back of the end zone for the Bills

It is ice-cold in Buffalo on Saturday night. Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense came out white-hot.

Allen was at his best, using size and strength to guide the Bills to an early touchdown.

His ability was never more visible than on the touchdown pass when he managed to keep the play live and threw a touchdown pass that tight end Dawson Knox came down with in the back of the end zone.

The catch wasn’t simple but Knox made it look effortless as he went up and came down with 6 points.

The PAT was good and the AFC East champs led 7-0.

The drive went 70 yards in 9 plays and ate up 5:15

Stefon Diggs pays tribute to Betty White’s memory with cool cleats

Stefon Diggs wore cleats before the Bills played the Jets that paid tribute to the late Betty White

Stefon Diggs wins the day for the best footwear and tribute in Week 18 of the NFL season.

The Buffalo Bills’ wideout warmed — can you warm up in January in Orchard Park, New York? — in cleats that paid tribute to the late Betty White.

The beloved actor passed away on New Year’s Eve at the age of 99. She would have turned 100 on January 17.

Kudos, Stefon Diggs.
