Kansas State vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

Gear up the offense and get ready to get it all going.

Baylor might have the second-best defense in the Big 12 according to the statistics, but it gave up close to 500 yards to Oklahoma last week, allowed 500 in the loss to West Virginia a few weeks ago, and it’s about to deal with a Kansas State offense that’s been terrific when it doesn’t turn the ball over.

The running game continues to be excellent, Adrian Martinez threw for over 300 yards against Texas, and the O should be able to rip off yards in chunks.

Again, the Baylor defense is good, but the yards are there to anyone who commits to grinding a bit. Oklahoma was able to do that, and Oklahoma State and West Virginia were able to succeed, too.

Baylor is 1-2 when allowing 150 rushing yards or more. Kansas State has hit that mark in every game but two, but …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Baylor Will Win

Turnovers matter.

Kansas State doesn’t have a problem with them – giving it up just seven times all year – but it turned it over twice against TCU and twice against Texas and lost both games.

That wouldn’t be that big a deal – again, the Wildcats don’t have a turnover issue – but Baylor’s defense is starting to do more and more to take the ball away.

It came up with just six over the first six games and went 3-3, and forced ten in the last three games and won all three fights including two on the road.

That coincided with the running game that perfect up at just the right time. The Bears have started pounding more and doing more to control the tempo, and it shows – they’re 5-0 when running for over 170 yards and 1-3 when they don’t.

Run, take the ball away, win, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Kansas State get nastier against the run?

Its own offense is good enough to be balanced and explosive – there’s no fear with this bunch on the road – but the run defense that struggled against TCU and Texas has to hold up.

Again, just like Baylor won when it ran well and took the ball away, Kansas State lost when it gave up yards and turned it over.

Baylor will run well and will take the ball away.

Baylor vs Oklahoma Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Has Baylor quietly moved back into the Big 12 title mix?

It lost two games already in conference play, but it hasn’t faced TCU, Kansas State, or Texas yet – there’s plenty of time to make a run to go defend its championship.

It cranked up the running game in wins over Kansas and Texas Tech, the offense is great at controlling the clock – the Bears lead the conference in time of possession – and the defense has been great against the run allowing just 113 yards per game.

The team has been inconsistent, but it has to run and keep going. The team is 4-0 when it gets to over 230 yards, and it’s 1-3 when running for under 170.

Oklahoma’s run defense has been better, but Kansas State, TCU, and Texas all won when they ran wild – they all ran for 275 yards or more.

But …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Oklahoma Will Win

This is a much, much better team with Dillon Gabriel.

He got knocked out early against TCU and the OU wheels came off. There wasn’t a prayer against Texas when he wasn’t able to go, but everything was right again when he came back and threw for over 400 yards in the win over Kansas.

He doesn’t have to throw for a gajillion yards, but he has to keep the chains moving and keep the Baylor running game off the field.

The Bears might be able to control games with their ground attack, and they usually dominate the time of possession battle, but Oklahoma doesn’t need to own the clock to win this.

As long as Gabriel is sharp – Baylor is just okay at getting into the backfield – the Sooners should be able to keep the offensive momentum going from the last few weeks.

But …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can the run defense hold up?

It’s possible to slow down the Bear ground game – Iowa State did it – but it’s going to push for close to 200 yards.

And then there’s the Bear pass defense. It’s been solid – it was great against Texas Tech and held up okay against Oklahoma State and Kansas – but it’s going to get hit for well over 200 yards.

It’ll be a fun shootout with OU doing a wee bit more at home.

Baylor vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Just when the defending Big 12 champion appeared to be on the ropes, it came up with a great win over Kansas to get back in the mix with several big games coming up.

The offense might have a slew of turnover problems – more on that in a moment – but the defense clamped down hard on the Jayhawk running game and the O got its own ground attack going.

Part of the way to beat Texas Tech is to keep the high-powered offense off the field, and the Bears can do that – they lead the Big 12 in time of possession. More importantly in this, the secondary should bend, but it will take a lot to break.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raider offense might have its guy.

Tyler Shough is reportedly healthy enough to play against the Bears, and Donovan Smith is getting better, but freshman Behren Morton has been terrific with two straight huge games. He’s got the arm and mobility to keep everything moving against a Baylor defense that doesn’t have much of a pass rush.

Or, it’s possible one of the other quarterback options sees time. No matter what, it’s a lot for Baylor to prepare for, and the production will be there.

Turnovers have been a problem for the Bear offense with eight in the last three games and with multiple giveaways in four of the last five games.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech is a different animal at home. It lost the three road games at NC State, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State, and won all four home games so far.

Baylor will be able to keep up for most of the game, and it’ll have its chance to pull off the win late, but Texas Tech’s offense will be too productive at home. The passing game will work when it has to.

Kansas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks are able to keep on going.

The defense is the defense. There was a great performance in the loss to Iowa State, but the inability to close down most passing games is part of the deal with the offense able to roll up yards in bunches, even without QB Jalon Daniels.

Yes, Kansas lost to TCU and at Oklahoma, but think of it this way … Kansas lost to an unbeaten TCU in a fight and on the road to a desperate Oklahoma team that got its starting quarterback back.

The passing game has thrown four touchdown passes in three of the last four games, the O is still among the best in the nation on third downs, and the team will make Baylor press.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor is more than happy to throw it around to keep up.

It would rather rely on its defense and get the good running game going to control the clock and tempo, but QB Blake Shapen has been great with the passing attack throwing for 766 yards over the last two games.

Granted, Baylor lost to Oklahoma State and West Virginia, but yeah, the offense can keep up.

And it might not have to push the offense too hard. The Kansas defense gives up first downs and third down conversions in bunches, and at home the Baylor O should be balanced enough to throw well and average five yards per carry. The run defense will hold up fine and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor’s secondary won’t get gouged.

Kansas will get the O going. It’ll be its normal balanced self, but a few turnovers will matter and there will be just enough stalls to give Baylor the opportunity to push through.

It’s Kansas. It’ll be another fun offensive show, and for the third week in a row the other side will do a bit more.
