Baylor vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Just when the defending Big 12 champion appeared to be on the ropes, it came up with a great win over Kansas to get back in the mix with several big games coming up.

The offense might have a slew of turnover problems – more on that in a moment – but the defense clamped down hard on the Jayhawk running game and the O got its own ground attack going.

Part of the way to beat Texas Tech is to keep the high-powered offense off the field, and the Bears can do that – they lead the Big 12 in time of possession. More importantly in this, the secondary should bend, but it will take a lot to break.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raider offense might have its guy.

Tyler Shough is reportedly healthy enough to play against the Bears, and Donovan Smith is getting better, but freshman Behren Morton has been terrific with two straight huge games. He’s got the arm and mobility to keep everything moving against a Baylor defense that doesn’t have much of a pass rush.

Or, it’s possible one of the other quarterback options sees time. No matter what, it’s a lot for Baylor to prepare for, and the production will be there.

Turnovers have been a problem for the Bear offense with eight in the last three games and with multiple giveaways in four of the last five games.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech is a different animal at home. It lost the three road games at NC State, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State, and won all four home games so far.

Baylor will be able to keep up for most of the game, and it’ll have its chance to pull off the win late, but Texas Tech’s offense will be too productive at home. The passing game will work when it has to.

Baylor vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor appears to be back in its groove.

That’s been said before after winning three straight after a two-game losing streak in mid-January, and the blowout loss to Kansas wasn’t great, but the easy wins over Kansas State and Texas looked right. Those were the Bears playing up to their capabilities.

They hit the inside shots, the defense was fantastic, and team was all over the boards in the win over the Longhorns. Texas Tech might have a great defense and it’s strong with its ball control style, but it turns the ball over way too much.

Baylor’s defense is fantastic at forcing mistakes and coming up with steals, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas Tech was able to pull off the win over Baylor the first time around, and that was in Waco.

It won 65-62 because it show well, didn’t have turnover issues, and it held its own on the glass.

At home, this is going to be about the defense. With Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua likely out for the year with a knee injury, Baylor is missing a key part of the inside presence – he only scored four points in the first meeting, but he came up with ten rebounds.

Texas Tech’s job is to slow everything down to a stop, get out on the three and keep Baylor from getting clean looks, and get every defensive rebound.

Baylor is killing teams with offensive rebounds lately. That can’t happen, especially with Tchamwa Tcatchoua out.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech finds an extra defensive gear at home. It’s 4-6 on the road and 16-0 at home, allowing more than 70 points just once and keeping most teams in the 60s.

Baylor will want to get on the move more than normal and the threes will be flying, but Texas Tech’s style, ball movement, and defensive toughness will take over in the second half.

Baylor vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Things are settled in now.

Texas Tech is already bowl eligible, interim head coach Sonny Cumbie is being kept on by new head man Joey McGuire as the offensive coordinator, and the pressure is off.

Now it’s time to turn it loose and play the role of spoiler.

The offense might have been stuffed by Oklahoma State in last week’s 23-0 loss, but it has something in freshman QB Donovan Smith, the O has shown the ability to be explosive and balanced, and the defense – for the most part – has gotten better at not breaking after doing a lot of bending.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor should be able to run.

The Bears lead the Big 12 in total offense thanks to a terrific combination of Abram Smith and Treston Ebner to control the game and the tempo. The offensive line has been fantastic in pass protection, it’s getting the job done for the ground game, and there likely won’t be a whole lot of guesswork in this.

Run, hold the ball for over 35 minutes, and continue to be fantastic at generating third down stops.

Texas Tech will press and needs to keep things moving, but there’s just enough of a decent Bear pass rush to make Smith have to rush.

But for the Bears, this is all about being able to run because …

What’s Going To Happen

Is QB Gerry Bohanon going to be okay to go?

The Baylor starting quarterback got knocked out of the Kansas State game with a leg injury, but freshman Blake Shapen is good enough to convert a few key third down plays, the running game should take over, and then it’ll be all about the Oklahoma – Oklahoma State showdown.

Baylor will win this, and it’ll be off to the Big 12 Championship if Oklahoma State wins. Oklahoma wins, Baylor is out, but no matter what it’ll be a terrific ten-win regular season.
