Boston’s Grant Williams explains what happened to get Jayson Tatum ejected against the Toronto Raptors

Star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum was issued two technical fouls in rapid succession, and was then ejected from Boston’s final preseason game with just seconds left in the game’s third quarter.

Boston Celtics reserve forward Grant Williams was interviewed by the media following the team’s preseason 137-134 overtime loss to the Toronto Raptors in Montreal’s Bell Centre this past Friday night. With the loss, the Celtics’ preseason slate of four exhibition tilts comes to a close as the team turns its attention to Tuesday night’s home opener for the 2022-23 NBA season against the Philadelphia 76ers.

In one of the lowlights of the loss to the Raptors, superstar Celtics forward Jayson Tatum was issued two technical fouls in rapid succession and was then ejected from Boston’s final preseason game with just seconds left in the game’s third quarter.

To fill us in on some of the gaps about what exactly was going on in that pivotal sequence, reserve forward Grant Williams gave a breakdown of the events and conversations with referees that led to Tatum being tossed.

Reacting to Jayson Tatum’s ejection in the Boston Celtics’ overtime loss to the Toronto Raptors

Should we be worried he is still complaining to refs? Or was the ejection unjustified?

During the Boston Celtics‘ 137-134 preseason overtime loss to the Toronto Raptors on Friday evening, star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum was hit with a pair of technical fouls and was subsequently ejected from the game. Reserve forward Grant Williams was then assessed a technical as well, and the team received yet another technical foul for the St. Louis native not leaving the basketball court fast enough, and the end result was Boston being hit with a total of three consecutive technicals in rapid succession.

In a game that otherwise didn’t matter, Tatum again let his emotions get the best of him. Will he and the Celtics use this as a teaching moment and learn from this experience?

Can it help the team moving forward and serve as a reminder to keep a level head going into the regular season?

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” had to say about Tatum’s ejection against the Raptors in Montreal on Friday.

Boston’s Derrick White breaks down which current Celtics player is the best at football

After a recent practice, reserve guard Derrick White spoke about the Celtics’ new hobby a bit with the media.

The Boston Celtics have long had an affinity for playing some football here and there at the team’s practice facility for fun, and inter-sport friendliness between the Celtics and the New England Patriots has bridged the gap a bit between the two fanbases as well.

But in the team’s 2022 training camp thus far, playing some football for fun at the Auerbach Center has been more than just a way to kill a little time for the players. In recent weeks it has transformed into a full-blown pastime for Boston’s roster, keeping the mood fun and light around the ball club.

After a recent practice, reserve guard Derrick White spoke about the Celtics’ new hobby a bit with the media, as well as playing off the ball in practice with backcourt teammate Marcus Smart and how that has been impacted by the improved spacing of the team.

Tony Bennett on Virginia alumni Malcolm Brogdon and Sam Hauser playing for the Boston Celtics

The Virginia coach opens up about Hauser and Brogdon’s fit with Boston.

Even as fans and analysts marveled at the low price the Boston Celtics paid to obtain veteran Indiana Pacers point guard Malcolm Brogdon, the rumbles of concern began whether the Virginia alumnus would be OK accepting a reserve role on the Celtics behind starting point guard Marcus Smart.

Brogdon has since said all of the right things, and even managed to get a vote of approval of his old college coach at Virginia, Tony Bennett, on an episode of the NBC Sports Boston “Celtics Talk” podcast this week.

Host Chris Forsberg chats up Bennett about Brogdon’s fit on the team, as well as what he thinks fellow Virginia alumnus Sam Hauser might be able to give Boston this season in an expanded role.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear the Bennett interview in full.

Will Marcus Smart’s role with the Boston Celtics change this season?

Will the team change up how they use the Flower Mound native this season in light of changes to the roster and bench?

The Boston Celtics continued to emphasize ball movement and multiple layers of facilitating during this season’s training camp. This was a slight departure from last year’s emphasis on having the ball in star forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s hands while veteran Marcus Smart moved from shooting guard to point guard.

Does that signal a role change for the Flower Mound native? Celtics interim head coach Joe Mazzulla told CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning at Boston’s practice on Wednesday that Smart told him what his role would be, and the two have had plenty of conversations on the topic and how he can best help the team playing on and off the ball.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what Manning had to say about Smart’s role with the Celtics in the soon-to-start 2022-23 regular season.

Report: Celtics unlikely to extend Grant Williams, hire additional assistant coach

The Boston Celtics are wrapping up their offseason business with the start of the 2022-23 NBA season just days away.

The Boston Celtics are wrapping up their offseason business with the start of the 2022-23 NBA season just days away. New reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach sheds some light on what direction the Celtics will likely take regarding the extension of reserve forward Grant Williams and hiring an assistant coach to help interim head coach Joe Mazzulla in the wake of the Ime Udoka scandal.

Regarding the latter, the team is “confident in their current staff and have decided to move forward without making an addition,” evidently liking what they’ve seen from Mazzulla and his assistants so far.

As for the potential extension, “Williams is believed to be seeking a four-year deal with an average annual salary of around $13 million to $17 million, but the Celtics’ offers have fallen short.”

As we have noted elsewhere, it may be in both sides’ best interests to wait out the market.

Boston likely prefers the flexibility of keeping the former Tennessee player easier to trade on his rookie deal, and Williams prefers to bet on himself for a larger payday in restricted free agency.

Why Celtics camp invitee Noah Vonleh should be the favorite to make Boston’s 2022-23 roster

Is the Indiana alumnus the right fit for the Celtics?

With the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach reporting veteran big man and Haverhill native Noah Vonleh is the camp invitee “best positioned” to make the team’s 2022-23 regular-season roster, the question for some fans and analysts is if the Indiana alumnus is the right fit for the Celtics.

He has been the best of the Celtics’ unsigned camp invitees battling for the Celtics’ two remaining roster spots. On the other hand, there is an opportunity cost involved in Vonleh gaining the roster spot unless his deal contains guarantees he might not accept.

Host of the “How about them Celtics” podcast Jack Simone recently made his case on why Vonleh should indeed be in the lead to land a regular-season roster spot.

Take a look at the short embedded above to hear why he thinks this is the case.

Three things to watch as the Boston Celtics face the Toronto Raptors in Montreal

The Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors are set to play an exhibition contest at the Bell Centre arena in Montreal today.

The Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors are set to play an exhibition contest at the Bell Centre arena in Montreal as part of the league’s “NBA Canada” slate of games. It will also be the Celtics’ final preseason tilt. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

To cover that last friendly, host of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast Bobby Manning put together a preview of what fans ought to be watching for in what’s typically more of a dress rehearsal for the regular-season opener than the prior preseason contests that Boston has played thus far.

Per Manning, fans should watch to see whether combo guard Derrick White will continue to start for the Celtics, what players are part of the team’s bench unit and what kind of defense Boston will play.

Celtics reportedly plan to use all 15 roster spots, look internally with Noah Vonleh ‘best positioned’

The team will monitor cut players around the league as well, per reports.

According to recent reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the Boston Celtics plan to use all 15 roster spots — and expect to fill them internally barring an unexpected player shaking free ahead of the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

While Boston will “continue to keep tabs on cuts” around the NBA, big man Noah Vonleh ” is best positioned to secure one of the final two open spots.” That leaves Justin Jackson, Jake Layman and Mfiondu Kabengele in the running for the other. Kabegele is the least likely to make the full roster given he is already under contract as a two-way player.

Boston could maintain flexibility here and get an extended look at players by using partially guaranteed deals that would allow the team to keep them up to the January league-wide deadline to guarantee contracts.

Will Danilo Gallinari ever play for the Boston Celtics?

It’s a real concern with his future with the team in question given the size and length of his deal at 34 years old.

Injured Boston Celtics veteran forward Danilo Gallinari spoke at the team’s practice this past Tuesday and remained hopeful he’ll eventually join his Celtics teammates in their push for a championship.

He isn’t sure if that’ll be during the regular season, postseason or beyond, though, which puts his future with the team in question given the size and length of his deal at 34 years old. Gallinari had to wait nearly an entire month to have surgery on his injured knee and only days ago started walking again. Free throw shooting is the next goal in his rehab journey.

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning recently broke down Gallinari’s future with the team, as well as a little bit about how Sam Hauser has the chance to replace him in Boston’s rotations this season.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what Manning has to say in full.
