Army vs UTSA Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA did everything against Houston but actually win the game.

The offense didn’t control the clock, and the third down stops weren’t there, but QB Frank Harris was great, the defense was fantastic until the final few minutes, and overall the team showed just how good it still is after the breakthrough 2021.

The linebackers and defensive front kept the Cougar running backs under wraps. There weren’t any big bursts from the UH ground game – QB Clayton Tune ended up being the top runner with 51 yards – as the Roadrunners swarmed all game long.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Army Will Win

Army actually showed a little … balance?

It was a tough 38-28 loss to UTSA with the defense struggling late and the offense not being able to do what it normally does – control the clock. That’s not going to be a problem against a UTSA team that had the ball for just over 24 minutes against the Cougars.

The Army offense kept up the pace, it came up with 118 yards through the air on its four completions – that counts as balance in this attack – and it should be able to control the game throughout as long as the run defense can hold up.

Houston struggle to get the win because it couldn’t convert decent drives into points and it kept shooting itself in the foot with penalties and mistakes. Neither area should be an issue for the Black Knights.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This week, UTSA’s inability to come up with third down stops is going to be deadly.

Coastal Carolina was the right team with the right makeup to handle what Army needed to do. UTSA has the talent and ability to pull off the road win, but Army’s ground game will be far more effective this week.

At home, with the O having the ball for well over 35 minutes, the D will be rested late.

Army vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

As always with Army you have to cut to the chase.

Can Coastal Carolina stop the run? It was okay at stopping the run last season, and overall it was good and should be again, but the defense is all but starting over at linebacker.

The last thing you want in the opening game of the season against Army is a slew of newbies in the back seven who haven’t seen and done it all.

On the other side, the Army defense is built to deal with the way the Chanticleers spread things out. The secondary is full of veterans, the linebacking corps can move, and All-America talent Andre Carter will require all the focus of the Coastal Carolina blocking scheme.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Coastal Carolinas Will Win

Coastal Carolina might be able to beat Army at its own game.

It’s all about the system and the parts that fit together when it comes to the Black Knights. They have to own third downs and they have to dominate the time of possession battle.

Coastal Carolina might work quickly and with a good pace and rhythm, but it controls the clock. It held the ball for over 31 minutes a game and was No. 1 in the nation in third down conversions.

QB Grayson McCall is experienced enough to make the quick reads needed to get the ball out of his hands with Carter bearing down, and the offense should be a lot more dink and dunk than Army might like.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

It’s one of those fun tone-setter games for the season that’s going to fly under the radar.

Army follows this up with UTSA, Villanova, and Georgia State before going to Wake Forest. If this team plays up to its potential, this is a four game season – throw Air Force and Navy in there with Wake Forest – and this is one of them.

Coastal Carolina has a slew of nasty Sun Belt road games – Georgia State, Marshall – and has to deal with Virginia. If it wants a magical year, it can’t lose this.

The Chanticleers will struggle early on, but the defense will start to figure it out by the second half, and McCall and the offense will do its part when it comes to ball control.

This game will take about 90 minutes to get through with the clock always running.

Independents Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

College Football News Independent preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

The world of the independent college football programs will soon get a tad smaller with Liberty and New Mexico State off to Conference USA in 2023, BYU diving into the Big 12, and Notre Dame joining …

Maybe not yet on the Fighting Irish, but before the independents start finding homes in desperate conferences looking for members, they almost all once again have interesting schedules.

Notre Dame and BYU will make the most noise – as always – with so many high-profile showdowns, but Army could be the most interesting independent. If it can beat Coastal Carolina on the road to start the season, look out. At Wake Forest and the date against Air Force in Arlington, Texas are the only times the Knights should be the underdog.

BYU and Notre Dame play each other in Las Vegas, UMass and New Mexico State play each other, Army plays UConn and UMass, and Liberty plays UConn, UMass, and New Mexico State. And UConn and UMass go at it.

There’s obviously no conference championship to play for, so …

Army Black Knights Preview 2022

There was a time not all that long ago when Army was really, really struggling.

It was having a rough time when head coach Jeff Monken took over in 2014, and he didn’t exactly set the world on fire with a 6-18 start. There’s been one blip over the last six seasons – going 5-8 in 2019 – but the systems are working, the team is coming off one of its strongest bowl wins ever – beating Missouri in the Armed Forces – and …

This might be Monken’s best team yet.

Army won 21 games in in two years – 2017-2018 – but the combination of parts returning along with a manageable schedule should be enough to set the expectations through the roof.

And that includes beating Navy.

Army Black Knights Preview 2022: Offense

Like always, Army will run and run some more. The triple-option sprinkled in a little bit more for the passing game at times – it stunned Wake Forest and Air Force through the air for a stretch – but this was the second-least productive passing game in college football and it should be close to that again.

That’s because the ground attack will push for over 280 yards per game – 300 isn’t asking for the world – as the team dominates the time of possession battle, keeps the mistakes to a minimum, and plays like the Army offense normally does.

The leader of the fun is Tyhier Tyler, a 5-8, 183-pound speed-quarterback who led the team in rushing in 2020 and now takes over with veteran Christian Anderson done. The heavy lifting will be done by veteran slotback Tyree Robinson and thundering 260-pound fullback Jakobi Buchanan. Throw 255-pound Tyson Riley into the mix, and the power will be there to go along with the speed. Again, it’ll be the Army offense. There will be lots of running.

For what it’s worth, the Black Knights have their top – and, really, only – receiver. Isaiah Alston led the team with 22 catches for 449 yards averaging over 20 yards per grab. Robinson was second on the team with 12 catches. As always, Army won’t throw, but when it does, big things will happen.

The skill parts are set, but the O line needs a little tweaking. It’ll be fine with a wee bit of time – it’s always a Next Man Up situation – but one tackle is set with veteran Jordyn Law a good, big blocker on the left side, and most importantly, 290-pound center Connor Bishop returns. Everything else will work itself out.

Army Black Knights Preview 2022: Defense

Yeah, the Army defense has been great, but it also catches a big break by only having to work a few minutes a game. That’s obviously a wee bit of an exaggeration, but the offense holds the ball for so long – especially late – that the D is on the field for less than 25 minutes. It should be good on its own this year no matter what, starting with …

Andre Carter. Army has a legitimate NFL pass rushing prospect on the outside with 6-7, 260-pound size and non-stop motor. Defenses have to figure him out, but he’s not alone in a strong linebacking corps. The front three gets the ends back, but loses Nolan Cockrill on the nose. There’s size to rotate in the middle.

Almost everyone of note is back in the secondary. There might not a slew of big play performers, but this group can tackle – Marquel Broughton was second on the team with 80 stops – and seven of the eight picks from the secondary return. It’ll get hit hard by the good passing games on the slate, but there aren’t a ton of those to worry about.

2022 Preseason CFN Independent Offensive Player of the Year

TE Michael Mayer, Jr. Notre Dame

No, he’s not the receiver or big play target Brock Bowers of Georgia is, and there are plenty of other great tight ends coming into the season, but the 6-4, 251-pound veteran will get more than his share of the spotlight as one of the season’s biggest stars.

The future NFL starter caught 71 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns last season after making 42 in 2020. Now it’s salary drive time as he pushes to be a high first round draft pick with his physical style, blocking, and pass catching skills. He can do it all.

2022 Preseason CFN Independent Defensive Player of the Year

LB Andre Carter, Jr. Army

Yeah, yeah, yeah, a slew of Notre Dame defensive players probably should be fighting it out for this spot – Isaiah Foskey is fantastic; he’s the better pro prospect and more talented overall player – but Army’s special pass rusher gets the top nod assuming he can come close to matching the production of last year.

Who led the nation in sacks? Alabama’s Will Anderson had the most, but it was Carter who had the most sacks per game – 1.19 compared to 1.17 – to go along with his 44 tackles, four forced fumbles, and 18.5 tackles for loss.

No, he didn’t play an SEC schedule like Anderson, and he didn’t deal with the slate that Foskey had to, but he came up with big plays against Wisconsin and in the bowl win over Missouri, and the production was steady. Expect him to keep it all going as the star of an Army team with a defense to match the deadly rushing attack from the other side – almost.

5. The running backs came through

Missouri had the two big storylines with starting quarterback Connor Bazelak benched, and with star running back Tyler Badie opting out. As it turned out, neither thing might have mattered all that much.

More on Part One in a moment. As far as Part Two the replacements did their jobs.

Elijah Young was quick, ripping off a game-high 75 yards. Dawson Downing ran for 69 yards. QB Brady Cook was dangerous with 53 yards. Badie would’ve made more of a difference, but the Tigers averaged well over five yards per carry.

On the other side, this was the Jakobi Buchanan show.

He only ran for 68 yards and a score on 21 carries, but he was the battering ram who kept converting on fourth downs and pushed through the Mizzou defensive front all game long.

He didn’t fumble. Army didn’t turn the ball over. However, Downing …

One massive miscalculation later …

I blame missing EVERYTHING against the spread during an epically bad Saturday on the stress and strain of having to scramble to find ESPN after the YouTube TV/Disney kerfuffle, and …

I can’t blame this multi-billion conglomerates. It was all my fault for totally whiffing on my belief that Conference USA was going to get rim-rocked this bowl season – except, of course, for my pick of Marshall to cover against Louisiana. (It didn’t.)

Picking bowl games takes a different skill set from the regular season. Logic, reason, and normal rules don’t always apply – hello, Jackson State and BYU.

So I’m done with you, Conference USA. You win.

I’m staying away from the against the spread calls of Old Dominion vs Tulsa in the Myrtle Beach Bowl (I like Tulsa -9, of course), UTSA vs San Diego State in Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl (I like SDSU -2.5, of course), and Miami University vs North Texas in the Frisco Football Classic (I like MU, of course).

I always stick with my picks, I take my beating, and then I move on. But there were things that have gone the right was so far.

The point totals went just fine over the first several games, so I’m mostly going with those for these bowls during the week before Christmas.

Pray for me.

5. Missouri vs Army: Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl

LINE Army -4
ATS PICK Missouri

Oh, I am well aware that you pick against Army at your own risk.

I’m an adult, I take responsibility for my own actions, and I will almost always take my chances with SEC team over a Group of Five-level team.

Especially if that SEC team is getting points.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on San Diego State and its amazing defense in the 2017 Armed Forces Bowl – and then Army won.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on Houston in what should’ve been an easy in in the 2018 Armed Forces Bowl – and then Army won 70-14.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on West Virginia against the spread in the 2020 Liberty Bowl – and Army lost, but only by three.

Army is 4-1 in its last five bowl games from 2010 on, but there’s a strange part to that. None of the four bowl wins were against Power Five programs, and Army didn’t actually beat West Virginia last year.

In fact, Army hasn’t beaten a Power Five program since the win over Duke in 2017. Before that you have to go back to a 2012 win over Boston College.

I’m fully aware – and love – what Army does, and I know bowls go against what we all believe in our core to be true, but you’re getting points here. You’re not even asking the Power Five team to win big.

Missouri vs Army Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl Preview

Normally in bowl games you always assume the SEC team will take out the non-Power Five team just on talent, resources, depth, the lines, and all the things that come with being an SEC team.

Army and its style erases all of that.

The Black Knights once again proved they can be dangerous against just about anyone. They ran on Wake Forest, they ran on Wisconsin – at least enough to keep that close late – and they ran all over everyone else with the option ground attack that owns the time of possession battle, keeps the chains moving, and frustrates every strong defense that thinks it can hit the curveball.

However, there’s no letdown happening from a Missouri team that had to scratch and claw to get here and improved as the season went on.

For the first two months of the season the Tigers beat the teams they were supposed to beat, lost to the teams they were supposed lose to, and then came the back-to-back home wins over South Carolina and Florida to finally get something positive under head coach Eliah Drinkwitz.

Statistically, the Missouri run defense was the worst in the SEC, but it rose up in November and was far, far better. Now it’s dealing with something completely different.
