SEC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

[jwplayer eniJo7Qb]

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which SEC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is football, especially in the SEC. Football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best SEC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

SEC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

14. Vanderbilt

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in conference, 7th in SEC East

Basketball: 11-21 overall, 3-15 in conference, 14th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The football team never got anything going. There was a close win over a sleepy Missouri team, and that was about it with no offense and blowout loss after blowout loss.

Football was bad, but basketball was worse. At least the Commodores didn’t finish dead last in the conference in football. The hoops side finally won two SEC game in the final three, but overall it lost 17 of its last 20 games.

13. Ole Miss

Football: 4-8 overall, 2-6 in conference, 6th in SEC West

Basketball: 15-17 overall, 6-12 in conference, 12th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The basketball team started out well and crashed badly. Just when there was a chance to pivot – at 13-11 on a three-game winning streak – it all went wrong with six losses in the final eight games.

While the bad football season led to landing Lane Kiffin, getting there was rough. Losing five games in the last six was rough enough, but the way it dropped the Egg Bowl at Mississippi State – the peeing dog antics and missed extra point – made it uglier.

5 Instant Impact New Head Coaches: 20 For 2020 College Football Topics, No. 16

The five new head coaches who’ll rock right away this season. 20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 16

[jwplayer CTilIb5n]

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 16: The five new head coaches who’ll rock right away this season.

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

24 college football teams are starting the season with a new full-time head coach.

It’s an interesting group with 12 first time FBS head men, a few retreads getting another shot (Brady Hoke at San Diego State and Karl Dorrell at Colorado), and a few brand-name upgrades (Mike Leach at Mississippi State and Steve Addazio at Colorado State).

Which five might just turn around their respective programs right away?

Who doesn’t make this list? Coaches inheriting heaters (Shawn Clark at Appalachian State and Ryan Silverfield at Memphis) and coaches who aren’t likely to make the team better than it was last year (Dave Aranda at Baylor and Willie Taggart at Florida Atlantic).

We did a decent job with last year’s 5 Instant Impact New Head Coaches, and these five have a whole lot to live up to in their new gigs.

The five new coaches about to make the biggest instant impact are …

5. Danny Gonzalez, New Mexico

It’s been a rough run for New Mexico football.

Rocky Long was able to make the program a regular on the bowl circuit with five post-season appearances in six years in the 2000s, and then came one bad year in 2008. That was it for Long, the program was stale, it couldn’t make that next step, and …

Long made San Diego State a Mountain West powerhouse.

Meanwhile, Mike Locksley had a miserable run, Bob Davie went to two bowls in eight years – going 8-28 in his final three seasons – and it’s up to new head man Danny Gonzalez to try reviving his alma mater.

Getting Long to help the cause is terrific, too.

[lawrence-related id=508856]

Long returns to Albuquerque as the Lobo’s defensive coordinator under the 44-year-old former defensive back/punter/jack-of-all-trades, but they both have a whole lot of work to do.

You’re not going to have New Mexico football to push around anymore … eventually.

The team will need the positive injury-luck on offense it hasn’t had over the last few seasons, it needs to improve on the nation’s worst pass defenses, and it has to be a whole lot better than the second-worst overall D in America.

He’s bringing a nastiness to the defense, a no-excuses attitude, and he’s bringing a whole lot of talent.

And he’s bringing back Rocky Long, too.

There might not be a Mountain West title right away, but with Idaho State, New Mexico State and UMass on the slate, beating last year’s win total shouldn’t be a problem.

With this coaching staff, New Mexico might just win more than five games, not just five weeks of off-season practices.

NEXT: Oh this will be fun …

Missouri (5-6) vs. Arkansas (2-9) Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

This is now the Tigers’ bowl game.

There was hope for the NCAA to reverse its ridiculous decision to punish Missouri for self-reported and fixed transgressions, but no … the bowl ban this season holds.

Little Rock will have to serve as the place to have some fun playing a little more football.

Arkansas shouldn’t be anything more than a light scrimmage with an offense that can’t move the ball, a defense that can’t stop anyone on third downs, and hurt mostly be a painfully inefficient and ineffective passing game that can’t keep the pace with anyone.

Mizzou might be having a whole ton of problems on its own, but the defense is playing well. The secondary will clamp down, it won’t allow any long marches, and the run D is holding everyone to around 130 yards per game.

However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Arkansas Will Win

Didn’t you used to be the Missouri offense?

Kelly Bryant hasn’t been the same over the second half of the season after getting banged up a bit, and the passing game has stalled over the last five games.

How bad have things gotten?

Missouri only went under the 400 total yardage mark once over the first half of the season, and then everything went haywire in the strange loss to Vanderbilt. Ever since then, the O hasn’t managed 300 yards.

The passing game has been bad, the ground attack worse – the Tigers haven’t rushed for 100 yards in three straight games – and there’s nothing that’s consistently working well.

The Arkansas defense should finally get a bit of a break, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri’s running game is about to get healthy.

Everyone from WKU to Kentucky to Auburn to Colorado State has been able to rush for 200 yards, and the Tigers aren’t about to get too complicated about its attack. It’s going to line up, blast away, and let the defense take care of the rest.

However, Mizzou is 0-4 on the road this year, and it’s not above clunking against a bad team – witness the 21-14 loss to Vandy.

Arkansas will keep this close, but it won’t be able to come through late.

LSU (10-0) vs. Arkansas (2-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Arkansas Will Win

And thus begins the Barry Lunney era.

It’s been two weeks since the Hogs fired Chad Morris, but will that help make the offense any better?

For all of the losing, all of the embarrassment, and all of the problems, the Hogs have a decent enough secondary to make a few plays here and there, and the offensive line hasn’t been all that bad.

The ground attack ripped through WKU for 253 yards – averaging over nine yards per carry – a week after bothering Mississippi State for over seven yards per pop.

Rakeem Boyd isn’t getting enough work, but he’s been the main man with a few home runs over the last few weeks in his two 100-yard running games. On the year he’s rushed for over 100 yards four times – the first two times were in the two wins – and now he gets to go against an LSU defensive front that just got gouged.

It was against the Ole Miss offense designed by offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez – it’s able to crank out big yards in chunks from time to time – and LSU couldn’t handle it. QB John Rhys Plumlee and company ran for over 400 yards with four scores in the wild shootout.

Arkansas has to turn it loose, because …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why LSU Will Win

The Hog defense is about to be in for a very, very long day.

The Tigers can pick the way they want to get things moving. The Arkansas secondary hasn’t picked off a pass in five games and was giving up well over nine yards per throw before WKU dinked and dunked its way to a blowout win.

Joe Burrow should do his thing – just assume he’ll be connecting on at least 70% of his throws on this group – and then it’ll all be up to the running game.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire is on a run of three straight 100-yard games, averaging over six yards per pop on the season. The Arkansas defensive front cant get behind the line a little bit, but it can’t hold up against the un, allowing 265 yards or more in four of its last five games.

Kentucky ran for 330, Mississippi State ran for 460, and Auburn came close to hitting the 300-yard mark. LSU won’t have to take any big chances – it’ll be able to rip off yards in chunks.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The LSU defense that’s been getting hit hard and criticized over the last few weeks is about to show the world that it really isn’t all that bad.

Granted, it’s against a wounded Arkansas team that’s just trying to play out the year, but it’ll still matter.

The Tiger offense will effectively put this away in the first half, and then the defense will take care of the rest to clinch the SEC West.

SEC Quick Thoughts, Takes On Every Game: Week 12

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 SEC game.

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 SEC game.

Florida 23, Missouri 6

It wasn’t anything pretty, and the Gators didn’t get the Georgia loss they needed to take the SEC East, but it was still a strong road win by double-digits. Kyle Trask threw for 282 yards and two scores, the offense was able to open it up a bit in the third quarter, and it was the win needed to keep hope alive for a New Year’s Six bowl game.

Missouri can’t score touchdowns. It managed two field goals, making it the second straight game without a touchdown and with just 27 points over the last four games. The passing game didn’t go anywhere, the running game finished with 52 yards, and the O wasted a strong effort from the D.

The Tigers aren’t going bowling no matter what – thanks to NCAA violations – but it would nice to come up with a winning season. They get Tennessee up next before closing out at Arkansas.

Florida gets a week off before facing Florida State. The Sugar Bowl might be out with LSU, Alabama and Georgia all in the mix for the CFP and the top SEC bowl spots, but Orange is a possibility with a convincing win against the Noles and a 10-2 record.

Alabama 38, Mississippi State 7

Of course the season-ending injury to Tua Tagovailoa overshadowed everything else – a whole lot more on that coming over the next few days – but Mac Jones stepped in and was fine. The Tide only scored three points in the second half, but Jones hit 7-of-11 passes for 94 yards, the defense was great, and the shell-shocked team got through the rest of the game and got out. It was still a 31-point win on the road, even after all of that.

Najee Harris has picked a fantastic time to become amazing. He ran for 88 yards and three scores – and caught 51 yards worth of passes with a. score –  the offensive line blasted away, and the receiving corps was its typical fantastic self. Everything was great except for that, and …

Tagovailoa’s injury also pushed out of the spotlight a leg injury to DT Raekwon Davis. The D was just fine against the Bulldogs, but Davis the guy the line couldn’t afford to lose.

Mississippi State was able to run for just enough big dashes to average over five yards per carry. After a good early scoring drive, though, that was it. Tommy Stevens threw for 82 yards and a score, and he tore off a 46-yard run, but the O didn’t do much of anything with its 270 yards.

Alabama got a week against Arkansas to get Mac Jones up to speed in case he was needed against LSU. Now he gets a practice week against Western Carolina to get ready for the trip to Auburn. All is hardly lost in the CFP race – blow out the Tigers, and everything will be still on the table.

At 4-6, Mississippi State has to beat Abilene Christian and Ole Miss to get to six wins and bowl eligibility.
