All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UCLA vs Arizona Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Arizona doesn’t have enough of an offense to keep up.

It played well for a while in the misleading 41-19 loss to Oregon – coming up with over 200 yards rushing and 200 passing – but late turnovers made it ugly.

Overall, though, the running game hasn’t been able to get going, third down conversions are rare, and there’s not enough help from the other side to make a difference.

Basically, Arizona’s lines aren’t good enough yet.

There isn’t nearly enough of a pass rush to get to Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the Bruins downfield passing game that should be able to come up with yards in chunks.

In a perfect world, though, the Bruins take advantage up front and start pounding away from the first drive.

However …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arizona Will Win

UCLA is 3-0 on the year when it runs for over 200 yards, and it’s 0-2 when it doesn’t. Arizona allowed 254 yards on the ground to San Diego State,  and no one else – not BYU, not Oregon – has been able to get past the 200-yard mark.

The top guys aren’t in place quite yet for new Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch, but he made a major statement from the start that his program would play defense, and it’s happening.

The overall numbers aren’t amazing, but considering Arizona went on an impressive run of allowing over 400 yards in 18 of 19 games before the 2021 season – and 22 of 25 going back through 2018 – only allowing one 400-yard day in the first four games is a big step forward.

And now the Wildcat defense has had two weeks off to rest up.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA will pick it back up again after failing to keep up in the second half against Arizona State.

It’s just the second away game so far – beating Stanford in the first one – with a balanced attack ready to be enough to overcome a strong first quarter start by Arizona.

The Cats won’t be able to keep up.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oregon vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

So what’s going right?

Things aren’t exactly going well when you lose at home to Northern Arizona, but this is all a work in progress for a program undergoing a total overhaul.

On the positive side, the defense is making plays behind the line – the offense will eventually get there; any D is good D in Tucson – and the secondary hasn’t been all that bad.

As great as Oregon has been, it’s defense gives up passing yards, the defense has hardly been a rock, and there should be just enough penalties to be annoying.

However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Oregon Will Win

The Arizona offensive line is – let’s just say – having issues.

The pass protection isn’t there – everyone is getting in the backfield on this O – and there’s no running game whatsoever. It’s a bad mix.

No ground attack means harder third down conversions, and no time to work make moving the chains impossible – the Wildcats are dead last in the country on third downs, converting just 20% of the time.

To blow this, Oregon has to turn the ball over a gajillion times, and that’s not happening – it only has one turnover so far.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon isn’t exactly going to look ahead to the trip to Stanford and the nastier Pac-12 games ahead, but it can do that after the first half.

Arizona just doesn’t have the lines. The D will do just enough to be annoying in the backfield, and it should be just okay enough to keep the team in the game for a little while.

Oregon will wake up, go on a few decent scoring drives, and that will be it. Arizona won’t be able to push back.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arizona (0-2) vs Northern Arizona (0-2) Game Preview

Why Northern Arizona Will Win

Arizona is struggling on the lines.

The offensive front couldn’t get anything going in last week’s loss to San Diego State, managing just 51 yards on the ground for an O that couldn’t keep up the early pace. That was partly due to the issues on the other side.

The defensive line got hammered by the Aztecs for 271 rushing yards, and Northern Arizona has to give it a shot to get the attack moving. The passing attack can get yards, and Kevin Daniels was able to come up with a few good yards in the 34-7 loss to South Dakota, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Arizona Will Win

The Northern Arizona offensive line is having even more problems than the Arizona offensive front.

It’s giving up way too many plays in the backfield, the pass protection hasn’t been there over the first two games, and it’s been impossible to keep up with defending FCS champion Sam Houston along with South Dakota.

Arizona might not be playing well, but it’s a work in progress. There are some decent young parts, but this should be a week off for problems up front.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Northern Arizona has occasionally given the other Arizona schools issues – getting the O going in a 2019 65-41 loss to Arizona – but this year’s version doesn’t have the pop.

Nothing is easy for Arizona, but it’ll finally be able to turn things loose.

The offense will sputter enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but the defense will help make up for it with a whole slew of sacks and third down stops.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Utah (2-0) vs San Diego State (1-1) Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

The Utes are better than they looked in the 26-17 loss to BYU.

At least they’re supposed to be better than that.

The running game worked. It averaged close to eight yards per carry, but the O only ran 25 times. The passing game dinked and dunked, but Charlie Brewer wasn’t bad. So what was the problem? The Ute D couldn’t get off the field as BYU converted third down try after third down try – don’t expect that to happen again, or against the San Diego State offense this week.

The Utes have way too much beef and talent on the front to get run over again. San Diego State has been able to pound away over the first two games against New Mexico State and Arizona, but neither of those two teams have anywhere near the talent Utah brings up front.

Utah isn’t going to let itself get pushed around two weeks in a row.

However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why San Diego State Will Win

If this is all working like it’s supposed to for the Aztecs, they’re able to run well, rely on the defense, and control the clock and the tempo.

No, they’re not going to run for 271 yards and keep the ball for over 37 minutes like they did against Arizona, but if they can be careful with the ball and keep the chains moving, they can slow this down to the pace they want to play.

On the flip side, the SDSU D stopped Arizona’s O cold, allowing just one third down conversion. The sacks are there, the pressure is coming from all sides of the defense, and …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

San Diego State’s offense isn’t going to rumble this week.

Arizona has a whole lot of work to do, and it showed when the Aztecs jumped out to a big lead and relied on the defense from there.

Utah’s lines will make up for last week’s issues, Charlie Brewer will have an efficient and effective day, and the team will start to look the part of a possible Pac-12 contender – like it’s supposed to be.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arizona (0-1) vs San Diego State (1-0) Game Preview

Why San Diego State Will Win

Running the ball on New Mexico State is about as easy as ordering Chick-fil-A, but after a rough start in the 28-10 win, the offensive line took over.

Chalk it up to the Aztecs needing to warm up a bit, but the ground game worked. Greg Bell ran for 161 of the team’s 248 yards as the offense pounded away and let the great defense take care of the rest.

Arizona isn’t going to be able to run the ball on this San Diego State defensive front, and it’s going to take a whole lot of passes to try getting things moving. New Mexico State tried that, threw three picks – and that was that.

As long as the Aztecs don’t make the big mistakes like they did last week – three turnovers and way too many penalties – they should be able to control the tempo.

But …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Arizona Will Win

The San Diego State passing game is a problem.

Arizona might have found its guy in the first game of the Jedd Fisch era. Gunner Cruz threw for 336 yards in the 24-16 loss to BYU, spreading the ball around well and showing glimpses of what might be coming.

If New Mexico State’s Jonah Johnson could throw for 326 yards on the Aztec secondary, Arizona should be able to wing it around.

Meanwhile, the Wildcat secondary should have a relatively easy day. Jordan Brookshire only hit 7-of-20 passes for 115 yards and a pick against the bad Aggie D, and no, the running game won’t rip off yards in chunks on a slowly improving Arizona defensive front.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona actually outgained BYU.

The offense threw well, the defense was good on third downs, and the team wasn’t bad outside of allowing a few big plays. San Diego State doesn’t have the pop to hit the throws the Cougars did.

However, it’s going to come down to which D will have a bad drive or two.

San Diego State will generate more of a pass rush and bigger plays behind the line, stalling Arizona just enough to get out with a tough, low-scoring win.
