I’m a professional.

I’ve seen it all, done even more, and I know well enough that when a pick goes the wrong way, you have a short memory, brush it off, and move on.

Last week was something … different.

I was already mad that the over didn’t come in my absolute lock of Wisconsin-Iowa at 36.5 – it stalled at 34 when both teams basically quit with 13 minutes to play and had a TON of chances to score.

Fine. It happens.

So Oregon and Cincinnati didn’t play like teams that really want to make big national statements against bad teams. Okay, no big deal.

That didn’t bother me, but Wyoming and San Jose State was going absolutely nowhere – until the Cowboys scored in the final moments to hit the over on the 41.

And then there was the game that will live in infamy.

Everyone had a part of Clemson and Florida State one way or another.

The under on the 48 was supposed to be a rock, all was fine, and … well, you know what happened.

I literally had to take a walk around the block on that one.

But that’s the deal. This is the life we’ve chosen. The belief systems are sound, you don’t stray from what you know to be right, and that’s why these picks are all correct.

I think.

We deserve it after the Death Valley Disaster.

So how do we get over this? We start with a pick that I know in my heart is probably wrong, but …

10. Wake Forest at North Carolina

LINE 77 Point Total
ATS PICK Under

This pick is wrong, but a man is nothing without his principles.

When finalizing the picks in the game previews, I always go with the score before looking at the lines – I don’t want to be influenced one way or the other.

In this, we went with a shootout that goes just over the 77-point total. But if you’ve been with this piece all year, you know that over the long haul, if you do the same thing every time you will be up if …

You ALWAYS go under on a massive point total of 80 or more, and 77 is close enough.

Wake Forest games are wild, North Carolina has thrown a couple of 59 spots on the board, but – and there are no such things as jinxes or curses … I think – we’ve nailed this dead-cold this year when going with the unders on massive totals.

Like the under on Wake Forest-Duke last week, which came at 51 on the 71.5.

As always, if it’s wrong, then you’re paying for the entertainment of a wild game, and enjoy the show.

(Everyone, now take a deep breath, because we’re diving right back in and about to right a horrible, horrible wrong.)

If you have kids around, please don’t let them look at this NSFW pick …

CFN Week 10 Experts Picks: College

9. Clemson at Louisville

LINE 46.5 Point Total
ATS PICK Under

Yeah, this is an all-timer YOU OWE ME, WORLD of a chaser, but like Clemson -4, and if it’s not too soon for you – I still have leftover trays of meats and cheeses sent to me by close friends and acquaintances after the day of mourning – go back in on the point total.

We were right. We were ALL right.

Of course the under was the play last week on Florida State-Clemson.

OF COURSE it was.

It took an all-timer of a final play – brilliantly broken down by Scott and Steve on their Bad Beats segment – for us to lose that.

The pick didn’t come in. It doesn’t mean we were necessarily wrong, and the same belief still holds.

Clemson games are really, really, really low scoring. Take out that putrid late touchdown, and the Tigers scored 23 points or fewer in every FBS game.

The Louisville defense isn’t playing that poorly, and the offense only came up with 13 on NC State. It’s not likely to crank it up in the high 20s here.

While we’re purging all of last week’s pain and suffering by begging for more of it, let’s go with another before moving on to more mature picks for serious people.

Wisconsin, let’s go.

CFN Week 9 Experts Picks: NFL

8. Wisconsin at Rutgers

LINE 37 Point Total
ATS PICK Over

It’s the SAME thing.

It took something catastrophic to lose the Florida State-Clemson point total, and it took something totally weird to get the Iowa-Wisconsin total wrong.

Just like you always go under on the massive point totals, you always go over on the puny ones. Too many things can go right, and in this, there’s one thing that might really make this work.

Wisconsin could hit the 37 all by itself.

The Badger offense is still awful, and it would be more than happy to get up 23-3 and sit on the ball for the last half hour of the game.

I know, three of the last four Wisconsin games haven’t hit 35, much less 38. I know, the last two Rutgers games made college football sad – and they didn’t get to 35, either.

Michigan State scored 31 on Rutgers. Ohio State got to 52.

Fiiiiiiiiiine, the under is the smart, sensible call considering how amazing the Badger D is, but all you’re asking for is 27-10 to get there, and anything else to go over.

Never let a point total of 37 go to waste.

Next, a point total that shouldn’t be right, and if it is, it’s not your fault …

Cal vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

There’s a whole lot about this team that’s up in the air right now, but …

The offense has found its groove just when it seemed like the season was over.

All of a sudden, the inconsistent attack came up with an almost perfect balance, generating 200 yards both rushing and passing in wins over Colorado and Oregon State.

The Bears are good at maintaining control. They own the time of possession battle, they’re great at coming up with third down conversions, and rather offensive line is solid at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Arizona’s offense kept on pushing in the 41-34 loss to USC – it was getting rocked early – but it’s way too inconsistent. Cal should be able to own the lines, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Arizona Will Win

How many players are missing from Cal – and who are they – after having several reported plays into COVID protocol?

Forgive how gross it is to go back to 2020 mode and analyze a football game based off a still-raging global pandemic.

Even if everything was normal, Arizona is playing better.

It’s wildly inconsistent thanks to a slew of young players needing to rise up, little depth, and not enough stars on the lines, but QB Will Plummer is playing like a keeper.

Hurt for a while and struggling through through too many games, he battled against USC with 264 yards and should keep on throwing in this to make up for a rough running game.

Cal can be thrown on – allowing over 200 yards in every game but the win over Colorado – and the Wildcats are going to give it a try.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona has been way, way overdue to finally get a win.

It played well for 40 minutes against Oregon before the roof caved in. It should’ve been competitive against Colorado, and wasn’t. It pushed USC and should’ve gotten past Washington.

Even if everything was normal, this would be the game for a still-fighting Arizona team to finally get it done on pure effort – as long as it can keep all the little mistakes to a minimum.

The 10 best college football predictions against the spread for Week 9, diving into a slew of extreme point totals that appear to be very, very off.

Last week I needed to stop a slide before it became an avalanche, so I went with a few tried-and-true belief systems and ended up going 6-4.

I’ll take it. We can do better.

The whole point of this is to try to find discrepancies in the market. Where is the betting public going wrong, and how can we all exploit it? This week, there’s one potentially massive thing happening that we’re crazy not to to at least take a shot at.

The point totals.

If you’ve been along for the journey all year, and maybe even for several seasons, you’ve hopefully been able to get nice and fat on the unwavering belief that you ALWAYS go hard on the under on a college football point total of 80 or more, go strong with the under on 75 or higher, and dabble tastefully when it’s at 70.

Last week I hollered that the WKU-FIU point total of 77 was silly-high, and it came in at 53. I also said to stay away from the over on 76 in Ole Miss-LSU, and it came in at 58.

Of course this doesn’t always work, but people love, love, love going with the over, and in college football, you have to take advantage of that.

There’s a flip side – the way-too-low point totals.

Just like you need a ton of things to go the right way to get an over on 75+, you also need the world to go bonkers to get an under on 40.

The idea is to dare the extreme to actually come through and be just that extreme.

And with all that pretentiousness in mind, we kick this thing off with …

10. Florida State at Clemson

LINE 48 Point Total
ATS PICK Under

You know that giant pile of bull muffins I just spewed about going to the extremes? Yeah, do that, but sometimes you have to buy into the Maya Angelou paraphrased world of poetry, quips, and betting …

When a team shows you who it is, believe it.

If these 2021 Clemson Tigers come out and hang 58 on the board, then tip your cap, accept the moment, and cheerfully move on, because that offense so far really, really isn’t working.

Clemson hasn’t scored more than 19 points in and of its last three games. It only went over 20 once against an FBS team this season, and that was in a 27-21 loss to NC State. Even if this is the day it all kicks in, the Tiger defense is good enough to keep down the Florida State offensive side of things.

If Clemson can hold Pitt to 27 points, it can keep the Seminoles under wraps.

Okay, so you’re not buying in. Let’s try this the other way …

CFN Week 9 Experts Picks: College

9. Duke at Wake Forest

LINE 71 Point Total
ATS PICK Under

As I mentioned before, 80, and you go under head first and don’t ask how deep the pool is. 71 … ehhhhhhhh, yeah, but dip your toe in first.

Again, a whole lot of things have to go right for two teams to combine to score 72 points, but this one is a bit different.

The total opened at 69.5. America saw this, remembered the 70-56 craziness of Wake Forest’s win over Army last week – full to-be-warned disclosure, I adored the under on 59.5 in that – and it instantly shot up to 71.

Duke was shutout last week against Virginia and scored seven three weeks ago against North Carolina – the Cavs and Tar Heels aren’t exactly the ’85 Bears defensively.

But I get it. Wake Forest has allowed 34 (Louisville), 37 (Syracuse), and 56 (Army) over its last three games, but going over on 71 is an outlier for Demon Deacon games even though it happened the last two weeks.

I promise, we’ll get to actual games and picks soon, but keeping with the theme …

CFN Week 8 Experts Picks: NFL

8. Charlotte at WKU

LINE Point Total 73
ATS PICK Under

Last week the under on WKU vs FIU was here in the 8 spot, and it hit easily. No, I’m not superstitious, but if something works, you go with it until it doesn’t.

WKU has one of the nation’s most dynamic passing games as the program went big to fix the glitch of the last few years – if you were with this last season, unders on WKU games were gold because that team couldn’t score – but 73 is a tad high even against a suspect Charlotte pass defense.

The 49ers allowed 13 touchdown passes in the their last four games, got ripped up by the Middle Tennessee air attack, and got hit for 466 by FIU. Both of those games blew past 73.

There’s going to be a lot of sweating on this – these two offenses should be terrific – but 1) it’s supposed to be soggy and rainy in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Saturday, and 2) it’s a point total of 73. Give it a shot … but lightly.

Okay, okay, let’s throw an actual against the spread pick in here …

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

USC vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The team has been brutally close to finally getting a win.

It’s been a few years without a victory – going back to the middle of 2019 – but it had Washington in big, big trouble before succumbing late 21-16. It played well for three quarters against Oregon, and …

Okay, it got wrecked by an awful Colorado team in what should’ve been a winnable game, but the want-to is still there. This team still has a big goal to shoot for – yeah, getting a W would be a huge deal – but USC is quickly slipping away into 2022.

It’s a lost year for a program in limbo. Everyone’s waiting for the head coaching search to really kick in, and going to a random bowl isn’t exactly an acceptable carrot at the end of the stick.

This might be the time for Arizona to get that running game going – it ran for over 200 yards against both Oregon and Washington – to power away and operate against a Trojan defensive front that’s not getting into the backfield.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why USC Will Win

Arizona isn’t doing the little things right to get over the hump.

Even when it’s playing well, there’s a bad penalty here, a missed assignment there, a mental lapse, a turnover, a special teams gaffe, a missed opportunity, something to screw it all up.

The Wildcat offense doesn’t do enough to keep things moving, the defense doesn’t do enough against the run, and turnovers are a huge issue.

Arizona is dead last in the nation in turnover margin.

USC might not be playing all that well, but the passing attack is still the best in the Pac-12, and it should be able to get out to a decent enough start to make Arizona press. There isn’t enough of a Wildcat offense – there’s nothing happening down the field – to keep up.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

USC will be able to go through the motions and win this easily.

Arizona will still give it the old college try, but it’s not getting anything out of its quarterbacks – injuries have been a major issue and Gunner Cruz is struggling – but there’s hope that Will Plummer will be a factor.

The USC offense will perk up when it has to in the second quarter to all but put this away.

USC has a hard time coming up with a full 60 minutes, but it won’t need to.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Washington vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Arizona’s offense can’t find the right mix.

The defense isn’t all that great, but that’s not really the problem. The Wildcats can’t seem to stop giving the ball away with 12 turnovers in the last four games.

The quarterback situation hasn’t been settled – Jordan McCloud threw too many picks against Oregon, and Gunner Cruz isn’t generating anything down the field – and there isn’t enough of a running game to take the heat off.

Washington isn’t exactly burning it up offensively, but the pass defense hasn’t been solid allowing just four touchdown passes and coming up with four picks. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arizona Will Win

Yeah, the Washington offense. It’s struggling.

It’s gotten to the is-what-it-is point, only getting past 350 yards in the win over Arkansas State and its miserable defense.

The passing game is struggling, the ground attack is worse, and Arizona has to take advantage of all of it to stay in the game into the fourth quarter.

This isn’t the type of Washington team that’s going to run away and hide with the game. There’s not going to be a giant explosion of early points from the passing game, there will be a few turnovers, and Arizona has to take advantage of all of it.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona played a Colorado team last week that should’ve been ripe for the picking.

There wasn’t any offense happening, the Wildcats were playing reasonably well in close games – to a point – and …

Colorado 34, Arizona 0.

Washington doesn’t have an offense, and it’s not going to roll easily, but it’ll methodically get just enough to overcome a good start from an Arizona offense that’s desperately looking for a little luck.

The Wildcat passing game won’t be able to come through in the second half against this UW secondary.
