Arizona State stunned Oregon 31-28 to change the landscape of the College Football Playoff chase. What does the big upset mean?

5. Arizona State was absolutely brilliant

Arizona State played a tough, nasty defense for three quarters, Oregon came roaring back with 21 fourth quarter points to get back into the game, but it was one throw.

Sun Devil freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels aired it out, Brandon Aiyuk ran under it, and one 81-yard touchdown later, the College Football Playoff race just took a big turn now that the No. 6 team has been knocked out of the national title hunt.

Daniels aired it out for 408 yards and three scores, Eno Benjamin ran 31 times for a nasty 114 yards, ASU became bowl eligible while also knocking out the Ducks.

4. Can the Pac-12 still get its dream?

If it was 11-1 Oregon vs. 11-1 Utah for the Pac-12 Championship, that would’ve been big enough to think the winner would’ve had at least a 50/50 shot of getting in based on the boost from a win over a fellow top seven team.

But now, it’ll take some more work for Utah to get the CFP nod – more on that in a moment – which is a must for Oregon to get the Rose Bowl bid.

If the Pac-12 champion is left out of the playoff, then it automatically goes to the Rose Bowl – obviously, the league wants its two star teams to be in two of the showcase games.

Even with this loss, it’s still possible for the Pac-12 two teams in the New Year’s Six world. However, the loss opens the door for …

3. Alabama. It got a piece of the puzzle it needed.

The Crimson Tide need a path.

They’re not playing for the SEC Championship, so all they can do is obliterate Auburn – if that’s possible.

They have to get in on a Four Best Team thing, but that”s not happening if Georgia beats an unbeaten LSU in the SEC Championship.

The Crimson Tide need more pieces for its puzzle. It could use an Oklahoma loss to Oklahoma State in Stillwater – not crazy considering the way the Sooners are playing – and it would be a massive help if Oregon wins the Pac-12 title.

At the very least, Arizona State did Saban a solid.

2. This Oregon loss actually hurts Utah

Beating Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship would be a big, giant deal no matter what, but being 12-1 with a conference title over an 11-1 Oregon would’ve looked a whole lot better than being 12-1 with a conference title over a 10-2 Oregon team that lost to a meh Arizona State team that was 5-5 at the time.

As long as Oregon doesn’t whiff against Oregon State and Utah doesn’t gack against Colorado, the Pac-12 title game will still be a thing. If Utah is able to beat the Ducks in a big blowout, then that will matter, too – it really is playing the part of a top four team.

But the Pac-12 would’ve loved the attention if Utah and Oregon were both top 7 teams when they faced off.

Utah can’t care about this. Take care of business, keep looking and playing the part, be dominant, and being a 12-1 Power Five conference champ should be enough – helped now that the loss at USC early on looks fine now – to get the No. 4 spot.

1. With Oregon out of it, who’s still alive for the College Football Playoff?

Penn State lost to Ohio State. The Nittany Lions are out.

Minnesota got past Northwestern, Oklahoma survived TCU, Georgia got through Texas A&M, and Alabama squeaked by the Western Carolina juggernaut.

So now, LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, and Minnesota are the five teams that control their own respective destinies.

LSU and Ohio State can each lose next week – the Tigers play Texas A&M, the Buckeyes play Michigan – and be fine as long they each win their respective conference championship games.

Minnesota will get in if it beats Wisconsin and then Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, and Georgia is in if it beats Georgia Tech and then takes out LSU.

Oklahoma, Utah, and Baylor all have a shot, but winning out is a must, getting some more help would be huge – the Oregon loss to Arizona State was massive – and then it needs the committee to not like Alabama, and …

It’s going to be a fun two weeks.

Why Oregon Will Win

The team has found its groove at just the right time, and everything is clicking.

There was a fight against Washington, followed up by a survive-and-advance win over Washington State, but with blowout wins over USC and Arizona, the Ducks started to look the part again.

Arizona State has been miserable at just the wrong time, and everything is going down the tubes.

The defense has gone bye-bye in the four-game losing streak, the offense hasn’t been able to keep up any sort of pace lately, and a once-promising season is possibly two more losses away from an epic collapse.

What’s the biggest problem?

Mistakes.

The Sun Devils were air-tight when it came to turnovers over the first half of the season – giving away just five over the first six games – and then the giveaways started flowing with eight in the losing run.

Oregon is second in the nation in turnover margin.

It’s going to take a perfect effort for ASU to pull of the win, and it’s not up for it.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Arizona State Will Win

Jayden Daniels has to do something special.

It’s possible to throw on the Duck defense. Washington’s Jacob Eason, Washington State’s Anthony Gordon, and USC’s Kedon Slovis were all able to throw three touchdown passes against this group. They all lost – Slovis also gave up three bad picks – but that’s how ASU has to do this.

Throw, keep throwing, and hope Daniels can offset a suddenly shaky defense.

He’s been a bit banged up, but he came up with great games on the road against UCLA and Oregon State. The Sun Devils lost, but the offense worked. Daniels has to be great, the defense has to step up its pass rush, and …

It’s going to take something quirky.

How much do you believe in the Oregon second-half-of-the-season road clunker theory? For some in the investment community, this is a thing.

Oregon was rolling right along last year without much cause for alarm after a loss against a great Washington State team on the road, and then  … Arizona 44, Oregon 16.

The Ducks lost their final three regular season games last year outside of the the state of Oregon, and lost their final four road games – including to Arizona State – in 2017.

This isn’t really anything that really matters, though, right? Ask those who dove in deep in 2013 when a powerhouse Duck team was hammered by Arizona 42-16 in Tucson.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The problem is that the Sun Devils just don’t have the offensive line to handle what the Ducks do up front.

The Oregon D line is too active, the run defense too strong, and the offense really just doesn’t make the big mistakes a struggling team like ASU needs.

Justin Herbert and the Oregon O will need at least a half to put this away, and it’s going to be a bit of a struggle, but the team will survive a 300-yard day from Daniels to keep the College Football Playoff dream alive.

Arizona State (5-4) vs. Oregon State (4-5) Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The offense is expected to get its guy back with QB Jayden Daniels likely to go after missing the USC game. Now it needs its running back to go off.

Eno Benjamin hasn’t found a whole lot of room for a running game that’s hit the skids. A fantastic goal line runner, he hasn’t rushed for a touchdown in the last three games, and he’s had just 98 yards over the last two games after three straight 100-yard performances.

The Oregon State run defense can be hammered on – allowing 245 yards or more in three of the last five games – and controlling the tempo and the clock is a must. The Sun Devil defense has been getting worse as the season has gone on, and it needs Benjamin and company to keep the chains moving, and it has to come up with a few key takeaways on the road.

ASU is second in the Pac-12 in turnover margin – helped by 16 takeaways – and Oregon State doesn’t force mistakes. The Beavers need to get this into a little bit of a shootout, because …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Arizona State secondary is having a few problems.

After starting the season allowing just seven points in each of the first three games – and surviving a few big passing days – the Sun Devils have been hit way too hard by the better quarterbacks on the slate.

They lost in a shootout to Steven Montez and Colorado – giving up 337 yards through the air – and were expectedly hit hard by Washington State. The 477 yards and four scores allowed last week to USC was a problem, and letting UCLA’s Doran Thompson-Robinson to to hit close to 70% of his passes wasn’t okay.

Luton had a rough day against Washington – throwing for 88 yards in the loss – but when he’s on and the deep ball is working, Oregon State wins.

The Beavers are 3-0 when Luton averages 11 yards or more per past, and 1-5 when he doesn’t. Arizona State is 0-4 – all four losses – when it has allowed eight yards or more per pass.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State has been been great on the road lately and awful at home. Playing Utah and Washington in Corvallis has been part of the reason.

The Beaver offense will generate just enough balance and downfield plays to keep the struggling ASU defense on its heels. Neither team does much to control the clock, and at home, the Beaver O will have just a bit more of a spark in what should be a fun game with a whole slew of wild mood swings.
